In addition to his $1B+ career box office receipts, he won numerous Oscars and other major awards and helped kickstart the careers of many dozens of – then - unknown indie filmmakers like Quentin Taratino, Steve Soderbourgh, Richard Linklater, Rian Johnson and many others, too numerous to list here. Redford practiced a double, contradictory life. While continuing to work within the Hollywood system throughout his career (to finance his indie activities?), Redford also legitimized independent filmmaking for all time and -as much as any one person could- re-shaped how American movies were both made - and the neglected topics they dramatized. As you no doubt know, actor/director/producer Robert Redford died last week at the age of 89. Now, lots and lots of people took the time to look back at his film career, so Sean and Claude took a different tack and reviewed a different aspect of Redford's legacy: the Sundance Film Festival. Redford wasn't one of the original founders, but he came in very early in the process, and just having his name attached to it gave the festival a new focus and level of prestige.

JC Chandor's 2nd feature film after 'Margin Call' was 2013's sailing-catastrophe film 'All Is Lost', and it's a unique film in that it has virtually no dialogue and a single cast member in Robert Redford, who delivers a tour-de-force of non-verbal acting filled with pathos, regret, and rueful recognition of one's own self-delusions. As we continue to contemplate Redford after his death last week, it feels right and necessary to devote a few episodes to some Redford films that might be slightly off the well-worn pathways of The Sting and Butch & Sundance.
