This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit "The Last Castle", the military prison drama starring Robert Redford and James Gandolfini. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field enjoy the film, with Redford especially standing out. His performance brings a sense of gravitas and quiet leadership that keeps the movie engaging even when the plot becomes familiar. Gandolfini also plays his role as Colonel Winter effectively, bringing intensity and arrogance to the character, though both the role and the story itself lean heavily into predictable “by the numbers” territory. What elevates the film beyond its formula are the performances from the supporting cast, including Clifton Collins Jr. and Mark Ruffalo, who help give the prison and its inmates a stronger sense of humanity and camaraderie. While "The Last Castle" may not reinvent the genre, it remains an enjoyable and well-acted drama that succeeds largely because of the strength of its cast and the presence of Redford at the center of it all. What is your favorite non-Sopranos James Gandolfini role? “Boy, I got vision… and the rest of the world wears bifocals.” Join Ian, Liam & Kev for our 330th episode as we saddle up, head for Bolivia (Megs has headed back to America early), and ride into one of the most charming, melancholy, and effortlessly watchable westerns ever made with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). It's outlaws, bicycles, and impossible charisma this week as we ask whether two of cinema's coolest men were ever really built for the world they lived in. This week we discuss: Paul Newman and Robert Redford's legendary chemistry — playful, effortless, and endlessly quotable. Is this one of the greatest screen pairings of all time? The tone — western, comedy, tragedy, anti-western. How does the film balance charm with the creeping inevitability of its ending? Newman's Butch Cassidy — talkative, inventive, and always thinking three steps ahead. Is he a genius… or simply delaying reality? Redford's Sundance Kid — cool, lethal, and increasingly aware the world is changing around him. Ian breaks down the film's structure — episodic storytelling, tonal pivots, and why the pacing feels so modern for 1969 - but does it rob us with the ending Liam questions the mythology of outlaws — are Butch and Sundance rebels, romantics, or simply criminals we've chosen to like? Kev dives into the cinematography and score — sweeping landscapes, freeze frames, and Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head somehow working against all odds. Liam educates us all on the Old West and references about 25 other Westerns in the process The pursuit — who are those guys, and why does the film turn a chase into existential dread? Katharine Ross as Etta Place — underwritten love interest or essential emotional grounding? There's a cameo in this film that you'll never see coming - we didn't The ending — iconic, tragic, and endlessly imitated. Does freezing the moment make it more powerful? The “show vs tell” balance — how much does the film rely on charm and implication rather than explicit emotional beats? And finally, whether Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the coolest films ever made. Ferndale is bucking the trend. While most of Detroit's inner-ring suburbs are losing people, Ferndale has grown 1.3% since 2020 — outpacing every municipality that touches Detroit's city limits.  We dig into new population data highlighted by the Detroit Free Press and ask what makes Ferndale different: walkable neighborhoods, a real downtown at Woodward and Nine Mile, a strong LGBTQ community, and a place where people say they feel safe because neighbors have their back.  Here's a link to the piece we discussed: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2026/04/28/ferndale-is-growing-while-detroits-other-inner-ring-suburbs-shrink/89644896007/ We contrast Ferndale's urbanist-friendly density and sense of belonging with the population losses in places like Warren, Redford, Dearborn Heights, and River Rouge, and talk about how Gen Z, dual-income-no-kids households, and the Woodward corridor are reshaping where Metro Detroiters choose to live.

Clerks III (2022)Director: Kevin SmithCast: Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, Kevin SmithKevin Smith had a heart attack, rewrote his legacy, and somehow made a movie that retroactively makes us like his older films less. This week on Dewey Pod Monster, we close out "April and the Threequel" by finally confronting the most threatened episode in show history: Clerks III. We've been dreading this one for four years. It was worse than we remembered. In this episode, we discuss:The Nostalgia Cash-In That Went Too Far — Clerks III is essentially Kevin Smith remaking his own movie while reselling a heart attack story you've already heard on his podcast and live tour. We've paid for this content before.Comedy That Forgot to Be Funny — The film swings for emotional drama without earning it, leaving beloved characters stranded in a tone that doesn't fit them. It's neither funny enough to work as a comedy nor written well enough to land as a drama. The Rosario Dawson Problem — She was one of the best things about Clerks II, and here she's reduced to a ghost who tells her grieving husband she's sleeping with celebrities in heaven. It's a baffling choice that retroactively damages the previous film's ending.Who the Hell Is This Movie For? — Too recycled for longtime fans and too niche for newcomers, Clerks III only seems to work if you watched it live with Kevin Smith in the room. At home on your couch, it just doesn't work.We Also Talked About:WrestleMania 42 (ESPN) (2026) — Both hosts tuned in out of habit and left empty. Over-commercialization, ads during wrestler entrances, a CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns main event that nobody asked for, and a streaming situation so fragmented neither host could even find where to watch it.Louis Theroux Documentaries (Dailymotion) — Sean went deep into Theroux's hour-long doc series including Extreme Love (dementia and caregiving), a trans kids episode, and Heroin Town USA — a gutting look at opiate addiction in a small Virginia town from the mid-2010s.Cop Game (Tubi) (1988) — Directed by Bruno Mattei under the alias Bob Hunter, this Filipino-shot Vietnam War action film stars Brent Huff and features miniature toy cars in chase scenes, two songs on a loop, and an ending so abrupt it barely qualifies as one. Sean watched it. He has regrets. He's still going to watch more Bruno Mattei films.Hellmare Trailer (Youtube)— John got an early look at this upcoming horror film from local filmmaker Victor Gabriel (of Blood Gorge and Cruel), and he's genuinely excited. Meta horror elements, great visuals, real craft on display. A small premiere is coming — watch this space.Movie Theater Massacre (Tubi) (2023) — Shot at the historic Redford Theater in Redford, Michigan, this COVID-era local slasher features a butter knife as a murder weapon and a Linnea Quigley cameo. It's not great. It exists.Scanner Cop 2 (Youtube) (1995)— John watched it. His dog was audibly disturbed by the psychic screaming noises. Kane Hodder is in it. Robert Forster is in it and deserved better. The highlight is a villain who threatens to "kill you so bad."New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. You lie to your dentist. You lie in therapy. And here's the uncomfortable truth — the patterns you think you're hiding are hiding nothing. Tony Overbay, LMFT, sits down with friend and dentist Dr. Mark Redford to unpack one of the most fascinating overlaps between dentistry and human psychology: impression management — and why you simply cannot cram for the test of life. From the dental chair to the therapy couch, the habits you actually practice tell a story no amount of performance can cover up. If you've ever "prepared" for a dentist appointment by flossing for three days straight, this episode is your mirror. In this episode, you'll explore: Why your dentist can spot that you don't floss before you even open your mouth — and what that reveals about the limits of impression management in every area of your life The concept of "cramming for the test of life" and why emotional growth, empathy, and trust can't be memorized the night before How co-regulation works in the dental chair (and in your closest relationships) — and why calm presence is more powerful than joining someone in their chaos The "post-cleaning motivation shelf life" — why that I'm a new person feeling lasts about two weeks, whether you're leaving the dentist or your first therapy session The difference between unconscious incompetence and conscious incompetence — and why knowing you're avoiding something is actually meaningful progress The hidden burnout drivers in helping professions, why pathological kindness can work against you, and what it looks like when patients (or clients) need someone to blame Tony Overbay is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years of experience helping individuals and couples move from stuck and confused to grounded and growing. Blood Barn proves that a loving tribute to horror's golden age can still feel fresh and visceral. It's a film that leans into its influences, serving up gloriously chaotic scenes that are as beautiful as they are bloody. At its heart, it respects the sacred horror trinity—sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll—using their condemnation as the engine for a story that perfectly balances bone-chilling fear with a throbbing, undeniable lust.Join me as I sat down with the awesome Lena Redford and we spoke about her role as Josie in her feature length debut. We talked about how she approached playing the lead role that embraces the comedy-horror trope, how this movie compares to the Evil Dead, and what the atmosphere was like on set. With her being the granddaughter of the late legendary actor Robert Redford, I have a lot of respect for her and how she is carrying on his legacy. For those that have not seen this movie, I highly recommend that you do… It is definitely a glorious melody to 1980s horror, and which has also earned the right to be a midnight popcorn movie.

Another crowd filled podcast from our class on the flipside!  Luana Anders shows up to talk about an article I wrote on Medium about her pal Robert Towne on the flipside. (I sent Jennifer a video clip about Chinatown but not the article) https://medium.com/@richmartini/the-matrix-of-chinatown-and-some-amusing-anecdotes-about-those-involved-f3b494e8b468 Luana comes forward to say that the article is incomplete - because I barely scratched the surface of our conversations with Robert Towne and these other folks offstage. (The last paragraph references them). So I knew immediately what Luana was complaining about, Jennifer could not.  Then when discussing how Robert influences my writing (he referenced an iconic scene from "The Great Escape" when Steve McQueen was bouncing a baseball against a wall over and over) - Robert talked about the fun of putting an idea in my head and then seeing it come to fruition. Along those lines, Robert Redford showed up to remind Jennifer how he'd met her once, and how he was able to put that memory in her mind, since she'd forgotten about it.  Then his pal Paul Newman showed up - someone we've spoken to before, but he also gave his two cent about playing pranks on the flipside. Then Nikola Tesla showed up - the father of AC and radio waves - and we asked him about the amount of his conscious energy that he has brought back to the planet. (He referenced Musk, but said it was "around 3%")  That isn't a pejorative - and he could be referring to the OCD part of his journey on the planet.  Then Charles Dickens stopped by - all of these folks we've chatted with before over the past ten years, even if Jennifer doesn't recall them - I do.  Robert Towne's dog Hira makes a funny comment as well. Just another day at the office. Enjoy!

In this episode Michael speaks with Duan Biggs, Associate Professor and Olajos Goslow Chair at Northern Arizona University. They discuss Duan's extensive work and engagement in management and global policy in the governance of wildlife trade, and in a community and rights-based response to the Illegal Wildlife Trade. Based on his extensive experience, Duan describes how managing wildlife trade, and tackling illegal trade towards sustainable conservation outcomes requires alignment with the late Nobel Laureate Lin Ostrom's principles of good sustainable governance. The principles of those affected by policies and rules needing to be key participants in their formulation and fair and legitimate distribution of costs and benefits from policies being particularly important. Duan highlights that legitimate and strong enforcement is key ingredient in managing wildlife trade and curbing illegal wildlife trade, but needs to be accompanied by strong deeply participatory governance systems. In this episode we also discuss how the governance challenges in the Convention of Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), are echoed in other domains of global governance and the backlash and political and governance challenges in the US. In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of the amazing actor, producer, director, politcal activist and founder of the Sundance Film Festival... Robert Redford! Though born in Santa Monica, California on August 18th, 1936, this future star often spent his summers with his grandfather in Austin, Texas. Often contributing his time there to being the catalyst for his environmentalist activism and general love of nature. After many wild and traumatic events during his childhood, Redford went to the University of Colorado Boulder to play baseball. Opting to have his educational track be in the arts. However, a recurring problem with alcohol led to this budding artist losing his scholarship, forcing him to leave school entirely. Nevertheless, Redford made the most of his time away from university, choosing to study painting in Europe. Specifically that of France, Spain, and Italy. When he eventually went back to school, Redford was quickly disparged by one of his painting professors. This caused him to become unsure of his commitment to art. However, he used these feelings of uncertainity and set his sights on set design, this ultimately becoming the catalyst to his eventual career in acting. By around 1959, Redford would play a small role in the play, Tall Story (1959), that he would eventually reprise in a movie adaption in 1960--- this being his film debut. From there Redford would go onto being a part of many films such as  War Hunt (1962) and Inside Daisy Clover (1965), Barefoot in the Park (1967), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Downhill Racer (1969), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), The Candidate (1972) and The Sting (1973), with the last earning him an Academy Award nomination. In his lifetime, Redford would go onto gain many nominations for his work as an actor and director! To learn more about this episode and others, visit the official Cinema Sounds & Secrets website!

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of child abuse. Something was in the air in 1973 where people wanted nostalgia and con artists in their films. But while George Roy Hill teamed up with Redford and Newman for the utter perfection of the genre, Peter Bogdanovich followed up one classic film with another underrated gem. Nothing about this movie is particularly remarkable, save the outstanding performance by 9-year-old Tatum O'Neal. Instead, it's just an aggregate of everyone telling a really good story. Last year we lost several legends of the silver screen. One of the biggest ones was Robert Redford. For over five decades the man dazzled audiences both in front of and behind the camera. Narrowing the selection down to one film was difficult, we could spend a whole year doing a deep dive of his filmography, but we settled on what is maybe his most iconic role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. This film marked the first pairing of him and Paul Newman, as well as director George Roy Hill. Often cited as one of the greatest westerns of all time, how does this embody not only the genre, but Redford's career as a whole? Let's discuss.

Arguably the first true multi-hyphenate, with his directorial debut Ordinary People, Redford established an impressively new take on the “issues film”. Elena and Sam enjoy digging in and trying to untangle its thorny reputation as an Oscar spoiler for Raging Bull and Martin Scorsese. Topics include: the 92nd st Y, the origins of the Brat Pack, and what Mary Tyler Moore is really like.

They break down the film's paranoid tone, slow-burn suspense, and Cold War anxieties, while discussing why Robert Redford's understated performance as an unwitting CIA analyst remains so effective. The conversation then shifts to a reflection on Redford's career and cultural impact following his death, highlighting how Condor fits into his legacy as both a movie star and a defining figure of 1970s American cinema.

We all have our own favorite Robert Redford movie. But what's Redford's most prescient film about today's America? His Seventies trilogy about American politics — The Candidate, Three Days of the Condor and All the President's Men — are all, in their own profound ways, lasting meditations on the United States. But of the three, it might be Sydney Pollack's Three Days of the Condor (1975) which has the eeriest relevance to contemporary America. For James Grady, whose equally classic 1974 thriller Six Days of the Condor inspired the movie, Three Days of the Condor speaks to both the all-encompassing paranoia and isolation of our age. It's the anti-James Bond film for our anti-James Bond age. "For a movie that was made fifty years ago to unearth the emotions we felt then, and the emotions we're feeling now — that's extraordinary," James Grady says. Yes. After a half century, the Condor has landed. Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. THE OLD MAN & THE GUN (2018) feels less like a typical crime movie and more like a gentle farewell  not just to a character, but to an entire Hollywood era. Directed by David Lowery, the film stars Robert Redford as Forrest Tucker, a lifelong bank robber whose crimes are defined not by violence, but by charm, politeness, and an irresistible love of the game.   As the final entry in our Robert Redford Arc, this episode explores why THE OLD MAN & THE GUN works as a perfect swan song. The film distills everything that made Redford an icon: effortless charisma, moral ambiguity, romanticism without sentimentality, and a deep understanding of aging, obsession, and identity. What emerges is a crime story with almost no tension  and yet carries enormous emotional weight.   Lowery shoots the film on Super 16mm, giving it the texture and warmth of a 1970s classic, while Redford delivers one of his most restrained and expressive performances. Paired with a beautifully understated turn from Sissy Spacek, and supported by a stacked cast that includes Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, and Tom Waits, the film becomes a meditation on what it means to keep doing the thing you love even when the world tells you it's time to stop.   Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/FOURPLAY and use code FOURPLAY and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! Turn your expensive wireless present into a huge wireless savings future by switching to Mint. The original airing of this episode yesterday was missing 10 minutes of audio which is criminal because they were the best 10 min. A woman who slept with her stepon in Florida and of course the Scott/Kelley Wolf sitch. Check out Lumi Gummies and use code ROSEPRICKS to get 30 percent off your order.
