Welcome back to Pizza Quest 2025, for a new season with lots of new and exciting guests! We kick off the new season with Chef David Nayfeld, chef and owner of a hot new restaurant in the shadow of San Francisco's dynamic sports complex in an area called Thrift City (the restaurant is located on Warrior Way, lest there be any doubt about Chef Nayfeld's lifelong allegiance to Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors). Che Fico Pizzeria (pronounced "kay-fico") is doing crisp, "slightly but intentionally-charred" slices and pies, as well as a very inventive Italian-themed menu of starters, sandwiches, and salads. (You can see the menu by going to cheficopizzeria.com and navigating through the lunch and dinner menus). David is also the author of a new book called, "Dad, What's for Dinner?" with gourmet but accessible dishes you can make at home for and with your family. Chef Nayfeld has an extensive and impressive pedigree, having worked for some of the world's most famous chefs and restaurants, like Eleven Madison Park, Joel Rubuchon, and Aqua, and is now in the early stages of building his own restaurant empire, Back Home Hospitality, in the SF Bay area and beyond. Tune in to meet a chef who has paid his dues, found his own culinary voice, and is on the rise so that, when the awards start rolling in, you can say you heard about him here first. As we often say, "It's more about the quest than it is about the pizza, and the quest never ends." Enjoy!

In this double-length episode, we speak with folks doing similar work in both the San Francisco Bay Area and Detroit, Michigan. Our two guests – Joshua Hoyt from the Cultural Conservancy's Native Foodways Program and Shakara Tyler from the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network – are reclaiming the right to feed themselves and own their communities' ecologically sustainable food systems. They are nourishing their communities by restoring cultural and spiritual ties with the Earth, building their local economies, and healing historical traumas. We all learned a lot about how their work is taking shape in different cultural contexts, with strong overlap. Max talks with Eric Peterson, Director of Santa Clara County Airports, discussed the landmark arrival of G100UL, an unleaded 100-octane aviation gasoline, at Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose, making it the first airport in the U.S. to offer GAMI's G100UL fuel. Santa Clara County, motivated by studies linking lead exposure to nearby airports, decided to phase out leaded fuels in 2022, initially adopting Swift's UL94 fuel. However, the new G100UL caters to aircraft needing higher-octane fuel, expanding lead-free options for pilots. To encourage adoption, GAMI is offering incentives: aircraft based at Reid-Hillview and San Martin Airports can receive the required Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for free by following certain steps, while Bay Area pilots who buy an STC by November 1 can get 25 gallons of free G100UL. Peterson highlighted challenges in sourcing G100UL due to limited distribution channels, which required direct contracting with the manufacturer Vitol Aviation. Currently priced at $6.99 per gallon, the fuel may decrease in cost once rail delivery becomes available. With EPA regulations pushing for lead-free aviation fuel, Peterson emphasized that the shift is imminent, positioning Reid-Hillview as a national leader in environmentally sustainable aviation practices. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Work with me on agent foundations: independent fellowship, published by Alex Altair on September 21, 2024 on LessWrong. Summary: I am an independent researcher in agent foundations, and I've recently received an LTFF grant to fund someone to do research with me. This is a rolling application; I'll close it whenever I'm no longer interested in taking another person. If you're not familiar with agent foundations, you can read about my views in this post. What the role might be like This role is extremely flexible. Depending on who you are, it could end up resembling an internship, a research assistant position, a postdoc or even as a mentor/advisor to me. Below, I've listed out the parameters of the fellowship that I am using as a baseline of what it could be. All of these parameters are negotiable! $25 per hour. This is not a lot for people who live in the SF Bay area, or who are used to industry salaries, but it looks to me like this is comparable to a typical grad student salary. 20 hours per week. I'd like this fellowship to be one of your main projects, and I think it can take quite a lot of "deep work" focus before one can make progress on the research problems.[1] 3 months, with a decent chance of extension. During my AI safety camp project, it took about 6 weeks to get people up to speed on all the parts of the agent structure problem. Ideally I could find someone for this role who is already closer to caught up (though I don't necessarily anticipate that). I'm thinking of this fellowship as something like an extended work-trial for potentially working together longer-term. That said, I think we should at least aim to get results by the end of it. Whether I'll decide to invite you to continue working with me afterwards depends on how our collaboration went (both technically and socially), how many other people I'm collaborating with at that time, and whether I think I have enough funds to support it. Remote, but I'm happy to meet in person. Since I'm independent, I don't have anything like an office for you to make use of. But if you happen to be in the SF Bay area, I'd be more than happy to have our meetings in person. I wake up early, so US eastern and European time zones work well for me (and other time zones too). Meeting 2-5 times per week. Especially in the beginning, I'd like to do a pretty large amount of syncing up. It can take a long time to convey all the aspects of the research problems. I also find that real-time meetings regularly generate new ideas. That said, some people find meetings worse for their productivity, and so I'll be responsive to your particular work style. An end-of-term write-up. It seems to take longer than three months to get results in the types of questions I'm interested in, but I think it's good practice to commit to producing a write-up of how the fellowship goes. If it goes especially well, we could produce a paper. What this role ends up looking like mostly depends on your experience level relative to mine. Though I now do research, I haven't gone through the typical academic path. I'm in my mid-thirties and have a proportional amount of life and career experience, but in terms of mathematics, I consider myself the equivalent of a second year grad student. So I'm comfortable leading this project and am confident in my research taste, but you might know more math than me. The research problems Like all researchers in agent foundations, I find it quite difficult to concisely communicate what my research is about. Probably the best way to tell if you will be interested in my research problems is to read other things I've written, and then have a conversation with me about it. All my research is purely mathematical,[2] rather than experimental or empirical. None of it involves machine learning per se, but the theorems should ...

San Benito County is one of the unsung jewels of the Central California Coast. Most people know of San Juan Bautista and the Pinnacles, but there is much, much more. Two mountain ranges, broad valleys, rangelands, farmlands and biodiversity. But the Highway 101 corridor, which runs through a corner of the county, provides access to Silicon Valley and the SF Bay and people are moving south in search of cheaper housing. Malls and sprawls are not far behind. Now, a local movement is seeking to limit development with an initiative to require a public vote if agricultural, rural or range land is rezoned to residential, commercial or industrial use, a strategy already applied in several other California counties. Join host Ronnie Lipschutz to hear from Andy Hsia-Coron of Protect San Benito County, one of the activists behind the initiative, Chris Wilmers of UCSC, who studies cougars and bobcats that want to cross the road, Seth Adams from Save Mount Diablo, a land trust active across the County, and Val Lopez, Chair of the Amah Mutsun, whose ancestral lands cover much of the County.

Geneffa Jahan talks with third-generation Japanese American artist and activist, Shizue Seigel about her seven decades of experiential connections across age, class, continents, and cultures. Born in 1946, shortly after her parents emerged from incarceration, Seigel grew up in segregated Baltimore, Occupied Japan, California farm labor camps and skid-row Stockton. In this candid interview, Seigel shares how she rebelled early against the model minority ethos. In the 1960s, she dropped out of college to explore diverse cultures from the Haight-Ashbury to Indian ashrams, from the Financial District to public housing. Seigel speaks of the common humanity she discovered that informed her desire to forge connections with everyday people, elevating their stories through visual art and poetry. In this interview, she reads poems that address the challenges of growing up Asian and female and moves on to poignant poems of family history that focus on her bachans (grandmas) who showed her how to cope with grief. Through poems of oral history, Seigel presents a portrait of resilient people—enduring and gracious as they cope with tremendous loss and grief. In keeping with this spiritual alignment, Seigel ends the hour with a poem reflecting on her Buddhist worldview. Shizue Seigel has worked within marginalized communities for 30 years to help tell unheard stories--working with Black women living in public housing, Japanese American incarceration camp survivors, and other underrepresented groups. She is the founder of WriteNow! SF Bay, supporting writing and art by people of color. For more information, check out http://www.shizueseigel.com/ and www.WriteNowSF.com

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Lower-suffering egg brands available in the SF Bay Area, published by mayleaf on January 31, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. (Disclaimer: I am not an animal welfare researcher or expert. I got all of my information from publicly-available certification standards, farm websites, and emailing individual farms.) I'm not a vegan, but I've long felt troubled by the fact that eggs have such a high suffering-to-calorie ratio - higher, by some calculations, than beef[1] . I like eating eggs, and it seems possible to raise laying hens in a humane and low-suffering way, so I looked into whether I could purchase eggs from brands that treat their chickens well (or at least, less badly). TL;DR: See here for egg brands I recommend that are sold in the Bay Area. If you're not based in the Bay Area, I recommend Cornucopia's Egg Scorecard tool and the Animal Welfare Approved store locator to find low-suffering eggs in your market area. What does "lower-suffering" mean? I don't know how to tell whether a hen's life is "overall happy" or "net-positive" (or if that's even a coherent way to think about this question). Instead, I looked into common industry practices that are harmful to laying hens, and tried to find brands that avoid those practices. To do this, I used the qualifying criteria for A Greener World's Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) certification, which I've personally heard animal welfare researchers speak highly of. Unfortunately, very few egg brands (and none available in my current city) have an AWA certification, so rather than relying on certification status, I evaluated each brand on a per-criteria basis. Based on the AWA standards for laying hens, my criteria included: No physical mutilation. This includes debeaking (removing the whole beak), beak trimming (removing the sharp tip of the beak that the hen uses to forage and groom), toe-trimming (removing the hen's claws), etc. The AWA certification forbids all physical alterations. No forced-molting. This involves starving hens for 1-2 weeks, which forces them into a molt (losing feathers), resetting their reproductive cycle so that they can restart egg production with higher yields. AWA forbids this. Access to outdoor space and foraging. AWA mandates that outdoor foraging is accessible for at least 50% of daylight hours, and that housing is designed to encourage birds to forage outdoors during the day. The outdoor space must be an actual nice place to forage, with food and vegetation to provide cover from predators, and not just a dirt field. Indoor confinement is prohibited. Age of outdoor access for pullets (young hens). Many farms keep pullets indoors for their safety even if adult hens forage outdoors. If you keep pullets indoors for too long, it seems that they became scared to go outside. AWA's standard is 4 weeks; many standard farms don't allow outdoor access until >12 weeks (if outdoor access is provided at all). Indoor space. The hens' indoor housing or shelter must have at least 1.8 square feet per bird, unless they only return to their indoor housing to lay and sleep and spend the rest of the time outdoors. Smaller flock size. AWA has no strict requirements here, but recommends a flock size of
Are your real estate investments earning enough profit to make it all worthwhile? Do you know how much money is going out versus how much is coming back in? Do you need a better way of tracking the cash flow that you're working so hard to create? In this episode, you'll hear from real estate investor, David Richter, who learned by experience that he was spending too much for the amount of money he was getting from his rental properties. So he created a system for tracking cash flow called “Profit First” to help himself and other investors understand exactly how much they were really making. David has been investing in real estate for more than 10 years and has closed more than 850 deals. That includes wholesale, turnkey, BRRRR, owner finance, rentals, lease options, and other investing strategies. He created his Profit First cash flow system after he realized the need for tracking his cash flow. He's also the author of: “Profit First for Real Estate Investing,” and he's the founder of SimpleCFO Solutions to help other investors so they can “stop living from deal to deal.” You can also find out more about how to manage your real estate portfolio, get organized, avoid taxes, and make a profit by signing up for a free RealWealth membership at realwealthshow.com. Another year, another collection of awesome, insightful, actionable conversations on referrals. 2023 taught us that the lead generation methods that were once tried and true don't work anymore. People don't want cold calls, they don't want their doors knocked. They are craving the attention, connection and generosity of people who truly care. That's where we can come in. When it comes to maximizing your referability, there are many pieces to the puzzle, and some of our favorite guest's talked about them. Time mastery…we can't connect and provide maximum value if it's not in our schedule. The traditional idea of time blocking can feel suffocating, but it doesn't have to be. It can be joyful. We can create schedules that allow us to hit our goals, connect with people and be the influential powerhouses we're meant to be. Enjoy a masterful (and refreshing) lesson in time blocking with Karla Roberdeau and Neal Smith. If we fill our schedules strategically and then do the homework of following up, we can build a solid network, one person at a time. In this “Networking Secrets Revealed”, Realtor Becky Davis talks about how she fills up her networking stack, and how networking propelled her business to new heights. In today's world of artificial intelligence and superficial relationships - top of mind isn't good enough. We need to be Top of Heart. Authentic human connection has never been more important, and we can be the ones to facilitate that. Top of heart is the mindset, skill set and heart set to build real true genuine human relationships. This is so important, so mission critical, you can't do business without it. Grant Muller is so passionate about it, he wrote an incredible book. In this episode, he shares his incredible life story, and the new code for doing business today. Why not create a system for your dreams so you can track, refine and align them with your spouse? That's what Jeff Lutzinger did. Our biggest dreams will always feel unattainable, intimidating and too pie-in-the-sky until we actually get them out of our heads and onto paper. In this episode, SF Bay agent, Jeff Lutzinger shares how he created his dream sheet, and the impact it has had on him, his family and even his business. Get our Bucket List worksheet here. Having a high level of competence solves all problems in business, especially how referable we are. No one hires an incompetent professional, let alone tells their friends and family about them. In our 3 Cs of Referability special - we dig into competence and why it's mission critical. We also talk about how adding communication and character to this is a killer combo in business. Brendan Borrell is a corespondent for Outside Magazine. Along with photographer Tom Fowlks, he recently paddled from the Central Valley of California to the headwaters of the San Francisco Bay. Taking advantage of a very wet winter last year, which led to the reformation of Tulare Lake, they paddled over flooded farmland, up irrigation ditches and down rivers, braving putrid water, a sinking boat, being shot at, and nearly being arrested. An article about the adventure titled My Wild Wet and (Sometimes) Miserable Paddling Trip Through the Heart of California, with words by Brendan and photos by Tom, appears in the November/December issue of Outside Magazine.
