In this episode, Lisa and Wendy discuss:Accommodation strategies for your student - both no-brainers and more unique options. Why documentation of accommodations (official and unofficial) is critical. How the new VP of Accommodations for ACT made it easier to get accommodations. What the accommodation application process looks like. Key Takeaways: In notes from teachers, ask them to leave off the flattery and stick purely to the facts of what accommodations were given. If your school counselor is referencing their ten-plus years of experience, that's great, but gently remind them the process changed for the positive in 2020.For the ACT, registering your student for the exam is going to kick off the accommodation application process. Lack of documentation is the biggest reason for denial of accommodation. There should also be an underlying story connecting those documents.  “Start getting letters from the teachers or making sure that you're saving the notes from your teacher meetings because all of that documentation is showing a history of struggle, even if it's not officially notated on a 504, IEP, or learning plan.” – Wendy RaynorAbout Wendy Raynor: Wendy has been tutoring college admissions exams for over 13 years. Her tutoring journey began unexpectedly but changed her life forever. She has helped hundreds (if not thousands) of neurodiverse students become successful on these exams. In 2016, she began WRH College Prep which focuses on preparing neurodiverse students for the ACT. In 2019, she became a founding member of the National Test Prep Association and quickly became recognized as the industry leader in standardized test accommodations. In honor of the new Masters of the Universe animated series, this week Geoffrey brought some episodes of the 1980s He-Man cartoon to the table. Perhaps fittingly, since this cartoon was explicitly made to market the toys, Geoffrey didn’t remember plots so much as toys that he liked to play with.Skeletor and Evil-Lyn sit sprawled on the floor of a cave after Sh’Gora knocked them down in “To Save Skeletor”. In this episode we discuss “To Save Skeletor” and “The Mystery of Man-E-Faces”. In our bonus episode for paid subscribers, we’ll be talking about “Disappearing Dragons”Here’s Geoffrey’s hazy summary:“I watched He-Man all the time when it was on TV when I was a kid, but can't remember a single plotline from an episode.  What I remember is the theme song: ba da DA da, ba DADA da da da, ba DADA da da da, da da and the bit where he says "By the Power of Greyskull, I have the Power!"  I also remember having many He-Man toys and playing with them a LOT. They were cool as toys went, and much bigger than Star Wars guys, which I also liked. I had battle armor He-Man and Skeletor, which had breastplates that showed marks on them when you clicked them, like they'd been hit in the armor. Super cool. The guys in these episodes are ones I am pretty sure either had myself or friends had: Kobra Khan, who was an action figure and also a squirt bottle; Webstor, who had a hook thing; Man-E-Faces, whose face turned around; Lockjaw who had cool arm attachments; and Whiplash, who you could turn sideways and then he would spring back and you could hit things with his tail.  Oh, also, I was a big Cringer fan.”We were surprised at how much we found this to be okay watch! We also talked a bout about The Toys That Made Us, a Netflix documentary series that has a great episode about the He-Man toys. We definitely recommend that one if you think it sounds fun. Geoffrey recommends the new Masters of the Universe animated series, though he does give a minor spoiler/caveat about the premise of it. Julia hadn’t seen the series and was surprised by this spoiler and felt like it was understandable why it might upset He-Man fans. If you’ve seen the new one, what did you think? Cross TrainingSpeak Up With BoldnessRead or WatchGrowing up watching TV in the 80's, my friends and I imagined we, like scrawny Prince Adam, could thrust our sword in the air, shout "I have the power!" and transform into He-Man. But He-Man had a sidekick, Cringer, who needed a transformation of his own. His green and orange feline friend was scared of his own shadow until He-Man turned him into the fearless Battle Cat with a bolt from his sword. And, if you've ever felt frightened like Cringer — maybe you, too, need a bolt of courage from above. We're Cross Training to develop our integrity, one of twelve marks of the Master we're working on this year. Integrity comes when we receive the whole truth, live with purity, develop our character, and speak courageously. So how does Christ transform us from cowardly to courageous in this dark world? What You Need to KnowIf someone saves a child from a burning building, we rightly call them a hero. But the hero might ask, "what other choice did I have? I couldn't walk by and ignore the situation!" What looks like courage on the outside often feels like a necessity on the inside. The Lord's people often describe that same feeling of responsibility to speak, even when it's uncomfortable. "For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!" says Paul (1 Cor. 9:16). Jeremiah felt the same, saying: "If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,' there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot" (Jer. 20:9). In the same way, "knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others" as "the love of Christ controls us" (2 Cor. 5:11, 14). As a watchman on a city wall, if we don't warn of danger, that's on us (Ezek. 3:17-21). Who are we if we don't love people enough to speak up?What's the measure of a true friend? Why does the Bible declare "faithful ... the wounds of a friend" (Prov. 27:6)? Because you can count on your real friends to tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. We can get this all twisted and cut people off for speaking uncomfortable words. At times we might have to say with Paul, "Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?" (Gal. 4:16). Biblical love doesn't seek a friend's short-term happiness at all costs. "Love ... does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth" (1 Cor. 13:4, 6). We can't control a person's response, but we try to believe the best (1 Cor. 13:7) and know that our service to God is never meaningless (1 Cor. 15:58). God's people have a history of boldness in the face of uncomfortable and even dangerous circumstances (cf. Heb. 11:36-12:3; Acts 4:29). From Stephen's convicting sermon (Acts 7) to Esther's royal requests (Est. 5 & 7); from Barnabas advocating for Saul (Acts 9:27) to Paul opposing Peter (Gal. 2:11ff); from Joshua's "choose this day" (Josh. 24:15) to Nathan's "you are the man!" (2 Sam. 12:7). May we join the long line of courageous saints who stepped up and spoke up.What You Need to DoThink before you speak (Prov. 16:23). Know your heart — are you responding from bitter anger or genuine concern? We can mistake courageous speaking for "rash" speaking (cf. Eccl. 5:2), "loud" speaking (Prov. 27:14), or "harsh" speaking (Prov. 15:1). We can't go around looking for conflict, but we won't pretend there's peace without God either (Jer. 6:14). By "speaking the truth in love" (Eph. 4:15), we seek to build people up, not tear them down. When we tame our tongue (James 3:7-10), we can direct it to offer wise, purposeful words (Col. 4:5-6). Every time we say anything in Christ's name, we soberly speak "as one who speaks oracles of God" (1 Peter 4:11), taking care in what we say and how we say it.Read the room, considering the impact that your words will have. Maybe it's best to speak up publicly (Gal. 2:11), or perhaps it's better to address it privately (Acts 18:26). Consider how you would want someone to approach you in a difficult conversation (Matt. 7:12), and make sure it fits the occasion (Eph. 4:29).Once you've prepared yourself, speak up! Though it'd be easier to stay quiet, "if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted" (Gal. 6:1).Through the WeekRead (Mon) — Matt. 10:26-40; Acts 4:13-31; Col. 4:2-6; Jer. 1:6-19; Ezek. 3:17-21Reflect (Tue) — What makes me shrink back from confrontational conversations?Request (Wed) — "God, give me a spirit of power, love, and self-control" (cf. 2 Tim. 1:7).Respond (Thu) — Initiate contact with someone today to offer encouragement, pointing to Christ.Reach Out (Fri) — What impact have the courageous words of others made on your life?Support the Show

Coming soon from Lavasocks is a partnership with Sell The Heart Records and a rethinking of Rancid's classic record, “And Out Come The Wolves”. This version has a much better title, “And Out Come The Lawsuits”. Track by track, “…Lawsuits” features 19 bands covering ALL 19 songs on the original record and WOW. It's an amazing record! Bobby and I just went out for brunch where he spent the majority of the time doing anything but having a conversation with me. Because our father-daughter relationship is awkward at best, there was that weird reaching-for-the-wallet experience—I was too early on the draw and ended up paying the bill!Getting stories out of Bobby is impossible, which sucks because the man has truly lived. He’s played with Nancy Sinatra, Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, The Who—he’s a pro drummer (which, in essence, is why he was an absent father) and he has some real life experience that so far I’ve only learned about through Google. But I want to hear about his life as a musician in his own words, and this episode is about trying to make that happen.Gum is a big issue between us and we’re going to try to get to the bottom of it. We’re also talking about Bobby’s addictions and his messy trait that I definitely inherited. He ends up sharing some insights into his experience with alcoholism but refuses to share some of his juicer stories. So, I decide to try sharing some of my own experiences to get him to open up. This is the issue with having a distant dad, I’m itching to know what his life was like. He was an absent father who got a chance to have a life of his own and experience these secrets that I don’t know about him. One of the best ways for him to learn how to be a dad is to open up, it’s a chance for me to understand what parts of me come from him.I did manage to pull a few stories out of him though so here for your listening pleasure is how a lobster ended up in Bobby’s symbol bag and a few other gems. Want to read the emails that we talk about but were too vulnerable to share on the podcast? Deeper Digs: Turn It Around - The Story of East Bay Punk with Corbett Redford

Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70's - early ‘90's with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal. This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California's pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region's tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley's all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators' petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Our guest is our #1 TNT fan and supporter - Shelley Brown! Shelley Brown believes mindfulness is not what we've all been led to believe. Mindfulness is becoming more and more mainstream, and yet it still gets greeted with the “cringe” factor, gets put in the "too weird for the workplace" basket or worse yet, put in the same category as “chair massage”. Shelley understands, she too was a "Cringer". As a former high-octane sales pro and endurance athlete, she was a total skeptic and thought mindfulness was for tea-drinking yogis (not that there's anything wrong with that). She soon learned the truth and what has become a way of life has now turned into her purpose. Shelley's mission is to invite leaders to explore this transformative practice in an inclusive and accessible way with the intention to make it “sticky” not "icky" leading to a sustainable mindful culture. Rather than a focus on what's often seen as woo-woo, weird approaches, Shelley know it's a practice of rock stars and warriors... a practice that transcends calm...a practice that invites leaders to extend time in the present, to be conscious, to practice real-time self-awareness, to “Walk their Talk”, to lead with accountability, resilience, compassion, openness, equanimity and heart. Shelley spent decades in the corporate world in national and regional sales management roles in both high-tech and hospitality industries. Today she remains connected to the corporate world...only now as a Rock Star Mindfulness speaker and workshop facilitator! Shelley believes this practice of mindfulness helps us to find more joy and show up better for each other. Me recordó a Suicide Squad. Charlie Hunnam: Protagonista de Sons of anarchy.
