We here at RAM have always been vinyl conisseurs. But more and more people are discovering the joys of vinyl. It's really heartwarming when we see the youth of today (that was totally intentional lol) digging thru the racks. That means there's a lot of fertile minds that we feel, as veterans, should be doing our part to enlighten. Vinyl records have basic terminologies every collector should know. For instance: "LP", "hype sticker" and "deadwax". So we gathered a laundry list of said terms. Educational for the young'uns. Entertaining for the vets.   In our "News, Views and Tunes", we share our Halloweens and discuss A.I. "music". Finally, we crank some cool tunes from Sacred Reich, Overdrive (Swe.), Witchkiller, Meanstreak, Haunt, Spitboy and Phaethon.   Horns up!!

There was a whole buncha (yes, that's an official unit of measurement) stuff going on in Metaldom this week. So much we couldn't narrow it down to one specific topic for our discussion segment. So we just thru caution to the wind and layed it all out. We go into "Pantera" being dropped in Germany, a frivolous Marilyn Manson-related lawsuit and Pink Floyd goes "woke". But most importantly, we announce some cool upcoming tours. And the whys and wherefores behind them. 2023 is gonna be lit!! In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we dive into the new "That 90s Shows" and hit the comic shops. Musically, we crank new and used from Black Dahlia Murder, Atrocity, Exorcist, Spitboy, Nachtlich and Phobophillic. Horns Up and Stay Healthy! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee. In this episode, I am talking with Michelle Cruz Gonzalez about discovering her identity, colour blindness, the self-confidence that her mother instilled in her, how her punk rock outlook on life feeds into her teaching and the importance of listening to young people. This is such a fantastic conversation.Michelle is an extraordinary Xicana woman who emerged onto the 1990's U.S. West Coast punk rock scene in the legendary hardcore punk band Spitboy. She is an author and educator who lives the values that punk rock taught. Her memoir, The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band is an outstanding read about her time and experiences in Spitboy. But it's much more than that: it is a story of identity and self discovery, colour blindness, misogyny, privilege, class and the internal and external tensions that these issues create. It's written with empathy for everyone who has faced identity and discrimination issues.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70's - early ‘90's with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal. This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California's pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region's tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley's all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators' petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. In her new book The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band (PM Press, 2016), Michelle Cruz Gonzales tells her story as a member of a feminist hardcore punk band. The band, Spitboy, emerged in the early 90s in the Bay Areapunk scene. The book provides an insider's view of the scene, what it was like touring, and how a young Xicana found herself in a genre of music that typically identifies itself as male and white. Gonzales reflects on the gender and racial politics that shaped punk music and explores her political and racial awakening while performing in the band. She discusses how audiences responded to an all-women band and the roots of Spitboy's conflict with the riot Grrrl bands. The Spitboy Rule is an unflinchingly honest look at Gonzales's life in Spitboy and offers tremendous insight into the 90s punk scene. The podcast delves deep into all of these questions and explores Gonzalez's recent career as a professor and writer. Michelle Cruz Gonzales writes memoir and fiction and teaches English at Las Positas College. Born in East LA in 1969, MCG grew up in Tuolumne, a tiny California Gold Rush town. She played drums and wrote lyrics for three bands during the 1980s and 1990s: Bitch Fight, Spitboy, and Instant Girl. Gonzales currently lives in Oakland, California with her family. So stoked to have Michelle Gonzales on the podcast. Michelle played in the hardcore band Spitboy in the 90's and her book, The Spitboy Rule: Tales Of A Xicana In A Female Punk Band, was published last year and is an absolutely wonderful read. We spend 40 or so minutes being nostalgic about touring before smart phones and we discuss some race & class issues.

Universalists like to say art transcends identity, but today's guests insist it illuminates it. We speak with Sarah Schulman, whose new novel, The Cosmopolitans, is an updating of Balzac's classic Cousin Bette. Schulman sets the story in the Greenwich Village of the 1950s, using the story to look at intersections of racism, sexism, homophobia and rootedness. And hard-core punk shows are not necessarily where you expect to find women of color, bu the outsider lyrics and aggressive sound can speak to marginalized people. Michelle Cruz Gonzales is one such person.  The former drummer for the all girl band Spitboy talks with Robynn Takayama (punk name nonogirl!) about confronting hecklers, how her Chicana heritage could be lost to a punk name, and the Bay Area punk scene in the mid-90s. FUBAR is U.S. Army circa WW2 slang for Fucked Up Beyond All Repair.“The more things you treat like it the more your life turns to shit.”When Jody heard those lines she wanted to chant them with me. I have to admit it felt surreal to stand there recording with her. We’d played gigs together, Lucid Nation’s second gig was opening for Team Dresch at an art gallery in downtown L.A., but she and Donna, like Kathleen, and Adrienne from Spitboy, were heroes to me. Team Dresch is on top of the list of the best bands I’ve seen live (in a tie with a Sonic Youth sound check I saw at the Hollywood Palladium). I’m stoked that Jody played on FUBAR.FUBAR was recorded on an ancient Soundcraft Series 3 sixteen track mixing board big as a boat. Supposedly it had belonged long ago to Heart, and more recently to Soundgarden. This song and Mung Jung Bushi were the only recordings I got out of the huge thing before it broke down completely. Only one repair guy in all southern California could work on it and he was in demand. So bye bye board.I think I should have done more recording with this line up. I don’t know why I didn’t try to make that happen. Denise was busy with her Venice California metal band Form of, and Jody was playing with Family Outing, but we still could have gotten together once in awhile. Maybe we still will.
