Jumaane D. Williams is the Public Advocate of the City of New York. Previously, he served on the NYC Council representing the 45th District. Jumaane is a first-generation Brooklynite of Grenadian heritage. He graduated from the public school system, overcoming the difficulties of Tourettes and ADHD to earn a Masters Degree from Brooklyn College. He began his career as a community organizer at the Greater Flatbush Beacon School and later served as the Executive Director of NYS Tenants Neighbors. There, he fought for truly affordable, income-targeted housing across New York City and State. In the NYC Council, Jumaane championed landmark legislation that fundamentally transformed policing in NYC. Jumaane sponsored the Community Safety Act, reforming the Citys Police Department to address the abuse of Stop, Question & Frisk in communities of color and creating the NYPDs Office of Inspector General to investigate unlawful & unethical behavior. As former Co-Chair of the Council's Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, he helped create New York's Crisis Management System, whichfunds Cure Violence Groups that work to reduce shootings through a multi-pronged approach. The program fundamentally transformed the city's approach to gun violence prevention, and as Public Advocate he continues to work for its expansion and improvement today. Jumaane has led the fight for better policing and safer streets, affordable housing, and transparency and accountability in City government. As Public Advocate, Jumaane continues to be an activist-elected official who brings the voices of everyday New Yorkers to City government and makes New York a truly progressive beacon for all. Jumanne joins us on The Vault to discuss how he was able to thrive and become an advocate in spite of many challenges. Stadig flere elever har bekymringsfullt høyt skolefravær. Det skjer i Norge og flere andre vestlige land. I denne podkast-episoden spør vi hva kommuner og den enkelte skole kan gjøre.De fleste skoleledere og -eiere opplever at skolefraværet øker, særlig i grunnskolen. Fraværet oppfattes også som mer alvorlig og komplekst enn tidligere.Årsaker til fravær er sammensatt, og gjerne med flere faktorer som spiller sammen. Det som er sikkert er at konsekvensene for eleven og deres familie er store, men det er også et alvorlig samfunnsproblem.Hva handler skolefraværet egentlig om?For å forstå litt mer av hva skolefraværet egentlig handler om snakker vi med Maren-Johanne Nordby, seniorrådgiver i Statped sørøst. Hun har jobbet med elever med alvorlig skolefravær i en årrekke. Ofte har de som blir henvist til Statped nevroutviklingsforstyrrelser som ADHD, Tourettes syndrom og autismespekterforstyrrelser, eller psykisk sykdom.Nordby er også med på å utarbeide nye nasjonale retningslinjer for bekymringsfullt skolefravær. Retningslinjene publiseres 31. mai.Kristiansand kommune: SkoleportenI 2025 mottok Statsforvalteren i Agder 76 meldinger om utrygt skolemiljø. I flere av sakene hadde elevene høyt og langvarig skolefravær. Statsforvalteren minnet kommunen og den enkelte skole på deres plikt til å sørge for at elever med fravær blir fulgt opp. Men hvor langt strekker skolens ansvar seg, og hva kan gjøres?Kristiansand kommune har etablert et tverrfaglig samarbeidsprosjekt mellom skole, kommune, ABUP, PPT og Statped. «Skoleporten» er etablert på Tinntjønn ungdomsskole, og vi snakker med rektor Jarle Langeland, som har mer enn 10 års erfaring med å ta imot elever med bekymringsfullt fravær.Suksesskriteriene? Å etablere et tilbud for hele familien, og ikke bare den enkelte elev. Lytte til familien og lag et individuelt opplegg som passer den enkelte. Og ta den tiden det tar og begynn i det små.Lørenskog kommune: FraværsteametI 2019 etablerte Lørenskog kommune et eget fraværsteam, som gir hjelp til elever i grunnskolen som har bekymringsfullt fravær. Teamet jobber i tett samarbeid med elev, foresatte og skole for økt skoleoppmøte. Her jobber ansatte fra ulike tjenester i kommunen (barneverntjenesten, forebyggende psykisk helse (FPH), pedagogisk-psykologisk tjeneste (PPT) og skolehelsetjenesten).Vi snakker med koordinator Nina Dalby om hvordan fraværsteamet fungerer, og hva slags erfaringer teamet har gjort seg om hvorfor skolefraværet øker. Påskeferien prøvede at nedlægge os med en arrig dobbelt-combo: Casper har svedt tran med 40 i feber midt i en vaskeægte 'Amadeus'-katastrofe i Grand Teatret, mens Jannik har kæmpet mod en decideret middelalderlig halsbyld. Men stormen er redet af, og nu er vi endelig klar til at snakke lidt om film igen, og endda af den gode slags. Vi lægger benhårdt ud med den britiske Tourettes-dramedy 'I Swear'. Nogle kalder den noget af det sjoveste, de længe har set, men vi undersøger, om man ikke misser pointen fuldstændig, hvis man udelukkende griner. Vi ser nærmere på ubehagelig komik, Robert Aramayos fantastiske præstation og en både sjov og rørende tragikomisk fortælling om en mand, der har decideret svært ved at etablere sig som et helt almindeligt menneske. Spørgsmålet er, hvorfor har englænderne altid været sindssygt gode til at få ekstremt høj kvalitet ud af ensporet følelsesporno.  Derfra suser vi direkte ind i det lidt unikke børnesyn i den Oscar-nominerede animationsfilm 'Lille Amélie'. Her lugter det langt mere af Miyazaki end af Pixar, når filmen ret modigt tager livets allerstørste spørgsmål under kærlig behandling. Alt sammen set fra et barns særlige, og indledningsvist fuldstændig ubevægelige, perspektiv. Episodens hovedret er Joachim Triers længe ventede norske sensation, 'Affektionsværdi'. Vi dykker ned i det komplekse, Bergman-inspirerede familiedrama spækket med metalag og en solid Stellan Skarsgård i rollen som martret filminstruktør. Men formår den overhovedet at ramme os lige så rent i hjertekulen som Triers andre Oslo-fortællinger? Til sidst tænder vi for Seriemorteren. Ikke for at dele stjerner ud, for det har vi ikke set nok til, men for at dele lidt umiddelbare 'feels' og tanker fra sofaen. Vi kaster et undrende blik på den vilde klatretøsen-farvegraduering og nuller-nostalgi i Netflix' storstilede Jo Nesbø-satsning 'Harry Hole', tjekker ind hos Trine Dyrholm i den dejligt underlige islandsk-danske thriller 'Den danske kvinde', og runder lynhurtigt Handmaid's Tale-spinoff'en 'The Testaments'. He grabbed all the headlines at the Baftas for all the wrong reasons. Imagine what it was like to grow up with the neurological disorder, Tourette Syndrome, at a time when very little was known about it. That was the experience of Scotsman, John Davidson in the 1980s. Tourettes causes tics - uncontrollable and repetitive movements and vocalisations, like obscene gestures or swearing. John's story - one of both early rejection - and eventual acceptance - forms the basis for the biopic I Swear. Directed by Kirk Jones, it was nominated for five BAFTAs including Outstanding British Film and won for Leading Actor and Casting. It also captured headlines when John experienced a racially offensive verbal tic during the ceremony which was broadcast by the BBC. Kirk talks to Mihingarangi Forbes about the challenges of bringing John's story to the screen.

De flesta tror att Tourettes syndrom handlar om att svära och säga olämpliga saker, men det är ovanligt. Men också de mer vanliga ticsen med rörelser och ljud kan ställa till det. Den har fått stor uppmärksamhet, inte minst för de tics som fick Davidson att ropa otidigheter på Bafta-galan tidigare i år.Men hans form av tourette är inte den vanliga – bland de cirka en procent som får diagnosen som barn kämpar de flesta med andra problem. Och många är trötta på att den allmänna bilden att diagnosen handlar om att säga opassande saker – när de vanligaste vokala ticsen är harklingar och fnysningar.För att få diagnosen Tourettes syndrom behöver man ha både motoriska tics (rörelser) och vokala tics (ljud) och ticsen ska ha pågått i minst ett år och börjat före 18 års ålder. Ofta debuterar de i tidig barndom.Fernando Nyrén fick diagnosen när han var tio. Hans tics kan skifta över tid och ibland också ge fysiska konsekvenser, som smärta i nacke och axlar. Ändå kan han inte sluta. It was a horrible situation for eveeryone involved and thanks to the broadcast not being edited or cut like it COULD HAVE ... this set social media on fire. The Bros have a great conversation about the situation, educating each other on the seriousness of Tourettes Syndrome and understanding the "Coprolalia" that comes with it while also focusing on the DISRESPECT that CAN'T be overlooked because of the disability. This is what made this situation one out of a movie. It's a good convo! The Bros talk about the crazy situation in Mexico with the death of a Cartel leader and the mayhem happening throughout because of it. Next, the Bros discuss the recent passing of Eric Dane, a beloved actor from Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria who died from a short battle with ALS. The guys discuss this haunting disease and the speed of it and turn the conversation into one about showing up and making moments count. NETFLIX has announced that we're getting Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Paquiao 2 in Septmember this year. This comes a week after Floyd announced he was fighting Mike Tyson in Exhibition, and UN-retiring to purse a big event. The Bros discuss the Sport of Boxing and how it's seemlingly honoring the money more than the sport. The biggest question is are they wrong if we all are tuning in and it's keeping boxing exciting? Lastly, the bros talk about the late passing of Rondale Moore, a 25 year old NFL Wide Reciever who took his life this past week. This is the most important part of the podcast episode. The bros talk about mental health and it's importance, but more importantly they discuss how they deal with their OWN mental health in moments current and past and share a strategy you can use with you friends and family that might REALLY help.
