A fully updated and fascinating "where are they now" of all the main players in "Dirty Windshields", including members of the Smugglers past and present, beloved roadie Ska-T, Nardwuar the Human Serviette, Larry Livermore from Lookout Records and more.
Molly neuman is the drummer for legendary iconic Riot-Girl band Bratmobile as well as being the CMO of Downtown MNusic. She has been on the cutting edge of the recording industry for ther last 30 years from running bay area punk record label Lookout Records to managing bands. She share her thoughts on the current state of the record industry as well as reflecting on her personal journey through music. https://www.instagram.com/therealbratmobile/?hl=en https://bratmobile.bandcamp.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/3GTaO7e3uPaG0SJR7Hxy8L
The Smugglers are pulled out of a dozen years of dormancy by a young promoter from a legendary venue: 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California, for an epic event that would eventually become known as "The Lookouting." In turn, "Dirty Windshields", and the Smugglers, received a surprise happy ending...
In this final chapter, the Smugglers meet the ghosts of their future at a freezing arts collective in Switzerland: the rapidly rising garage rock 'n' roll band The Hives.
NEW ZEALAND! The Land of the Long White Cloud! WE MADE IT!!! This was one of the Smugglers most exciting and fulfulling touring destinations in our many years on the road and in the air. Shows were packed, songs were shouted, Kiwi friends and lovers made. All this even though Beez barely made it into the country despite our endless internal crossing-borders training.
This chapter finally answers the oft-asked question: "Did any of the Smugglers ever get it on with any of the Donnas?" Also: the Smugglers make a triumphant return to Japan to begin their epic Pan-Pacific tour for "Rosie", infamously dubbed the "Pacific Rim Job Tour."
If you've ever wondered what it was like to tour with *The Donnas* aka the American Teenage Rock 'n' Roll Machine, this chapter is for YOU. It was wild! It was skintight! It was non-stop party action! It was all over the U.S.A.! WHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
ROUGH PATCH! After years of slowly building up the Smugglers into something one might consider 'successful', the house of cards collapses when two members of the band quit. Upheaval at both Mint and Lookout Records doesn't help matters.
Ever heard of Isny? Neither had the Smugglers! The band comes down from the huge crowds of Italy to going up up up into the Alps for an out-of-control show at a tiny ski chalet in Bavaria... if they can find the town.
The Smugglers arrive at the most remarkable, filthy, amazing, huge, and impossible venues the band ever played: Forte Prenestino, an apocalyptic castle-like socialist squat, on the edge of Rome.
The Smugglers discover the smash 'em up demolition derby that is... Madrid during rush hour. Also, the band teams up with "Rock n Roll" Jimmy Garcia to help navigate Spanish clubs overflowing with elicit drugs and wild fans.
The Smugglers head to the Continent for their "Selling the Sizzle" European tour with mixed feelings. Would this tour do as poorly as their first trip to Spain a few years earlier, or would their newfound association with Lookout Records save their collective touring asses?
Dirty Windshields: the Audiobook is BACK for Part 3: "Sushi and Squats." In this chapter, the Smugglers journey to Japan for a tour with the Queers and Supersnazz, which begins on a bad note. Two members of the entourage disappear.
Many Pop Punk fans should be happy with our guest, Scott Morris of The INVALIDS (Lookout Records..at least one release was) to tell a story not too unfamiliar from our own. We are fortunate to be joined this week by Jesse Townley. Jesse, also known in the scene as Jesse Luscious, is a veteran of the punk scene, having been a member of The Criminals (Lookout Records), The Gr'ups, Blatz (Alternative Tentacles) & The Frisk (Adeline Records). Currently, he performs in The Pathogens and Scene Killers. Jesse moved to the East Bay Area as a young man and become entrenched in the thriving punk scene surrounding the 924 Gilman Street Project. Over the years, he has been a volunteer at the club, and an active member of the Berkeley rent board. In addition to all of this, he has also been a DJ on various radio stations for years, and a reviewer for magazines like Maximum Rock and Roll. Currently, Jesse lives in the U.K. and works as a project and sales coordinator for Packaged Sounds, a vinyl manufacturing plant, which is a great fit for him having spent many years working as a release manager at Fat Wreck Chords, Alternative Tentacles and Lookout Records. Needless to say, Jesse has done and seen it all, and has a lot of great insight and stores to share. This week, Andy is joined by Chris Appelgren. Chris took the reins at Lookout Records in 1997 after founder Larry Livermore decided he wanted to move on from the label. Having worked for the label for many years and doing artwork for many of the bands on the label, it seemed like a great opportunity. Under his watch (along with co-owners Molly Neuman and Cathy Bauer), Lookout managed to keep serving up tasty punk rock records from label vets like The Mr. T Experience and Screeching Weasel, to more angular indie-rock bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves and Engine Down. Unfortunately, due to a downward trend in album sales, and being unable to fulfill some royalty obligations to some of the label's top selling bands (Green Day, Operation Ivy, etc), the label had to close shop in 2012. But man, what a run! Besides being co-owner of one of the most iconic punk rock labels of all time, Chris is also a musician. He was the front person for The Pattern and The Peechees, played drums in The Potatomen, among other projects. Nowadays, he continues to work with bands doing graphic art for the likes of The Once and Future Band, and also has a musical project with friends covering obscure songs from the 60s and 70s. During this episode, we discuss his time with Lookout Records, as well as his time performing in The Pattern. We also discuss some of his favorite artists and he gives me his 5 desert island albums. You can find The Pattern, The Peechees & The Potatomen on streaming services. Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70's - early ‘90's with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal. This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California's pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region's tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley's all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators' petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. During the production of our film, we conducted over 150 interviews around the United States and amassed over 500 hours of interview footage. Those participating in the documentary include past and current members of: 924 Gilman, Maximumrocknroll, Lookout Records, Green Day, Rancid, Neurosis, Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, Yeastie Girlz, Stikky, Samiam, Jawbreaker, Isocracy, Kamala and the Karnivores, Beatnigs, NOFX, Primus, Metallica, Bikini Kill, Bad Religion, Soup, Sweet Baby, Special Forces, Deadly Reign, Christ On Parade, Corrupted Morals, Mr. T Experience, Victims Family, The Lookouts, Monsula, Cringer, Spitboy, Blatz, Filth, Econochrist, Fifteen, Pinhead Gunpowder, Tilt, Pansy Division, Dead Kennedys, Avengers, Fugazi, Flipper, 7 Seconds, Fang, Angry Samoans, Nuisance, Screeching Weasel, Engage, Dicks, Subhumans, The Tubes, Boo Hss Pfft, Verbal Abuse, The Vagrants, Schlong, The Gr'ups, The Tourettes, Pinhead Gunpowder, Tribe 8, Kwik Way, Social Unrest, White Trash Debutantes, Outpunk, DMR, Psycotic Pineapple, Black Fork, Sawhorse, The Skinflutes, The List, Sacrilege BC, No Dogs, Gag Order and more.https://eastbaypunk.com/https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M862N3M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_fMDICbM75A7DQ?fbclid=IwAR0DtCGsSH-309qN__dAoLPkwhhmFW1qGrj80IPssFsrf0wOSYbw1XOI2nA
