Hey, y'all! Welcome to the Gary Church Podcast . . . from Gary Church, here in Wheaton, IL. We would love to have you worship with us! You may find more information about our next worship service at www.garychurch.org. This is the scripture and sermon from January 1, 2023, New Year's Day, Wesley Covenant Renewal Service, and Epiphany Sunday! Our scripture is read by Nan Krull and (00:05) and the sermon by Rev. Brian Felker Jones “Be Holy, As I Am Holy” (06:37). At Gary Church our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world! Today we have a special opportunity to be part of the Wesley Covenant Renewal Service. In 1663 Richard Alleine, a Puritan, published Vindiciae Pietatis: or, “A Vindication of Godliness in the Greater Strictness and Spirituality of It”. In 1753, it was again published in John Wesley's A Christian Library. Wesley used one chapter, "The Application of the Whole," on Monday, August 11, 1755, in what probably was the first real celebration of the Covenant Service in the Methodist movement. Wesley found the service rich and meaningful. After the time of Wesley several versions of the Covenant Service were developed, gradually giving Wesley's material less place in the total service. The present service follows our Basic Pattern of worship, enables the congregation to participate more fully, and updates language. Most significant, the liturgy beginning with the Invitation is taken directly from Wesley's service of 1780. The Covenant Service is most commonly held on New Year's Eve or New Year Day. It is extremely popular to this very day across the breadth of Methodism around the world and Anglicanism. The heart of the service, focused in the Covenant Prayer, requires persons to commit themselves to God. We are looking forward to together through worship, re-committing ourselves to Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior!2 Chronicles 34:29 –33Jeremiah 31:31 –341 Peter 1:13-25John 15:1–8 Revised Common LectionaryVideo of the entire Wesley Covenant Renewal Service, January 1, 2023 Worship Service at Gary Church
Recorded at our Annual Wesley Covenant Service on Sunday 1st January, Pastor Sammy preaches a message of challenge from Jeremiah 4:1-4 and Revelation 3:1-6. The LORD longs for 2023 to be a Year of Harvest, but will we ready ourselves for what He longs to send our way? May you be blessed as you listen.
Wednesdays with Wesley is back from hiatus with an episode on the Wesley Covenant Service, which some Methodist churches use on the first Sunday of the New Year. Host Bob Kaylor offers a brief history of the service and then takes a look at the elements of the liturgy that renew our covenant with God and counter our culture's rugged individualism with a promise of surrender to God's will. You can access the United Methodist version of the Wesley Covenant Service here for your church or for your own use. Email the show at pastorbk@tlumc.org and follow Bob on Twitter @revbkaylor. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit bobkaylor.substack.com

Alasdair Black, our senior pastor, begins the new year with our covenant service
Covenant Service 9 Jan. '22
The Covenant Service at the beginning of a new year, is set in the context of Holy Communion. Remember God's grace and forgiveness in Christ, Remember he will sustain you for the journey ahead. Remember his faithfulness to you, which can inspire our faithfulness in return.
In our Weslyan Covenant New Year's service, we celebrate God's faithfulness and love while being honest about our circumstances. Responding to God's presence in our lives invites us to renew our commitments to one another as people of faith. This type of covenant is worth celebrating! We are empowered to love ourselves and to love our neighbor because God loves us. Join us! All are welcome. All are affirmed. . urbanvillagechurch.org . . . It's New Year's Eve, a time when well intentioned resolutions are made, yet seldom kept. In contrast, the Christian year traditionally starts with the first Sunday in Advent, so is well and truly up and running by now. In 1755; John Wesley* introduced the idea of the Christian renewing their commitment to Christ each year with a Covenant Service. He used material from the writings of the seventeenth-century puritans, Joseph and Richard Alleine. With modifications, the Methodist Church still uses this. It's something we can benefit from.

A remarkable feature of the pandemic has been the willingness of so many people to choose limitations for the sake of others, for those we love and for perfect strangers. NHS workers and many others have given themselves to serve. For all of us plans have been put on hold, freedoms curtailed, self-interests temporarily laid aside.
Welcome to the programme that I hope will lift us up whilst we're locked down and not able to be together in our churches, chapels and community groups. This week, I've a mix of old and new! At the start of every new year, Methodists celebrate a covenant service. Established by the father of Methodism - John Wesley - it's an important part of the Methodist Church calendar. But many of this year's covenant services have been affected by the closure of our churches during lockdown, so AT YOUR SERVICE this week goes back in time - to bring you extracts from a Covenant Service, recorded in the Promenade Methodist Church, Douglas FOURTEEN YEARS ago! The service is led by the Rev'd David Shirtliff, who was minister at the Promenade Church at the time - Bible readings are by Margaret Sanders and Frank Cowin, prayers are led by Hollie Johnston and Sue Montgomery, and Jennifer Bird is the organist. It was also a very happy and lively Family Service - so listen out for the arrival of Percy the Puffin! Whilst it has its origins in the Methodist Church, the Covenant Service has a very positive message, to carry us all through these uncertain times. From the Covenant Service of 2007, we come to the present day, reflecting on the fact that, since the first lockdown, one in four people are now entering the word ‘prayer' into internet search engines - that's a lot of people exploring something that can often be quite a challenge to talk about. Peter Shimmin is a Lay Reader, well-known for his work in the Anglican Churches in the North of the Island. Peter and his wife Sylvia live in Andreas with their beloved dog, Jacko. On this week's programme, Peter shares some very personal thoughts and reflections on the subject of prayer. And there's always time to feature your favourite hymns - let me know what you'd like to hear in future programmes by emailing judithley@manxradio.com
Our thoughts, prayers and music today come from our archive of church services recorded around the Island over the past 20 years. This morning, we're going to St George's Church in Douglas, to hear extracts from two services - a celebration of the 225th Anniversary of the Church (October 2006) and a Service of Re-Dedication following a major programme of refurbishment of the inside of the church (December 2007) The Warrington Male Voice Choir happened to be on the Island at the time of the Anniversary Service, and lent their voices to the celebration, with conductor Russell Patterson, and their own organist Anthony Whittaker. St George's resident organist, Mr Harvey Easton, plays for the congregational hymns for both services. The Archdeacon of Man, and Vicar of St George's, the Venerable Brian Smith (2005 - 2011) leads both services, but by the time of the Re-Dedication Service, the Island was without a Bishop, as the Rt Rev'd Graeme Knowles had just left to take up his post as Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, and his successor had yet to be appointed. So in December 2007, the Island was in the care of the Bishop of Warrington, the Rt Rev'd David Jennings, and he preached at the Re-Dedication Service. As you listen, bear in mind that these recordings were made some 14 years ago .... yet their message is so very appropriate for the present time! Next week on AT YOUR SERVICE we'll be delving into the archives again, to feature a Covenant Service - traditionally held in Methodist churches at the start of each new year. This is one we recorded some years ago - and be warned - it involves a talkative penguin ! I still welcome the opportunity to play the hymns you'd love to hear on the programme - email me - judithley@manxradio.com
Revd Kate Gartside leads our annual Covenant Service with readings from Mark 1:1-11 and Acts 19:1-7.
This covenant service is an oportunity for you to examine yourself before the Lord and rededicate yourself to Him.This year we are taking as our verse of the year Isaiah 40:31. This message will help you unbderstand it in context and how it applies to your life this year.Speaker: Johnny Hutton
‘We can come to this ser¬vice with minds full of OUR plans: things WE think WE should be doing. But I believe the real point of this Covenant Service is that we are to actively do, or patiently accept, whatever is God's will for us in this New Year.’
Sermon by Deacon Joy Everingham
