Wonderful article from Charles P. Pierce Esquire Magazine May 25 Let's get the whole gang together: Davey Moore, Hattie Carroll, Hollis Brown, Einstein disguised as Robin Hood, the motorcycle black Madonna two-wheeled gypsy queen, Ma Rainey, and Beethoven, John the Baptist, the Commander In Chief, Louis The King, Napoleon in rags, Lucille, Johanna, Sweet Marie, John Wesley Harding, St. Augustine, the joker, the thief, Big Jim, Lily, Rosemary, and most of all, the Jack of Hearts, Rubin Carter, Isis, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Blackjack Davey, Charlie Patton. All of them. Play me a song, Mr. Wolfman Jack, because if you want to remember, you better write down the names. Bob Dylan turned 83 on Friday. All of him did. All of them did. All the personae, the entire kaleidoscope of masks, the false fronts and head fakes, and, finally, the last, and in many ways, best of them all. The travelling storyteller, the seanchai as the people in the old country would call him. Out on the endless tour, up the endless highway. I think of him and I think of Turlough O'Carolan, the legendary blind Irish harper who would travel the countryside, composing his songs on the spot for whomever would give him food and drink. Go back further. Go back to Homer. Sing to him, O muse. When Dylan dropped "Murder Most Foul," virtually out of a clear blue sky, blessing us with it as consolation for the years when America had gone so terribly wrong, it was Homer of whom I thought, poet and historian both, protector of the shadowland between myth and reality, chronicler of what Greil Marcus called "the old, weird America," a phrase I wish I'd written. He'll be around all summer, travelling with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp and a whole clutch of other artists in something called the Outlaw Music Festival Tour. It's a high-priced extravaganza but, in a very real way, he's just on the road, heading for another joint. Move along, brother Bob. The highway, as you taught us, is for gamblers, and we take what we have gathered from coincidence. Here's a collection of comments and reflections from Dylan's artistic partners and others just sharing the same spaces with Bob. Interviews I've done over the years to be added to when Dylan turns 85. Interviews with David Bowie Robbie Robertson Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks The Avett Brothers Barney Bentall and Steve Dawson Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo) And Colin Linden (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) Wine and Dine – Tofino June i/2. The second story takes place next weekend June 1 and 2 in one of Earth's most beautiful places - Tofino, British Columbia. The western edge of Canada on Vancouver island. The community includes surfing, golfing, fishing, underwater adventures and an unusual gathering of chefs. It is where they come to learn how to create seafood dishes and cook with what the forest and oceans give them – and surf their minds out. It's the second annual Wine and Dine gathering on the front lawns of Best Western Plus Tin Wis Resort. All of the details can be found at www.tofinowinedine.com Our guests are the organizers and founders of Tofino Wine & dine Ronnie Lee and Ryan Orr.
Salt the rim for Jimmy Buffett and let's celebrate when there was nothing ironic about thick mustaches. Debating the Fu Manchu vs. the Horseshoe 'stache. Jr. Middleweights Wilfred Benitez and Davey Moore square off in Monaco on Wide World of Sports. Jack Morris faces Tony Gwynn and some unbelievable Gwynn stats. And four better-late-than-never Hall of Famers from the 1961 All-Star Game in San Francisco. All this and a full bottle Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing on the latest episode.

Sometimes when bad things happen in boxing, karma is seemingly to blame, or fighters simply can't help from getting into trouble. They're tales so common they're stereotypes at this point. Occasionally, though, fighters just run into rotten luck. Bad circumstances just find them. New York's Davey Moore fell into that unfortunate category. SUBSCRIBE!
Sean & Johnston examine a 1983 boxing bout that took place between undefeated prospect Billy Collins Jr. and Luis Resto. The fight was on the undercard for a bout between Roberto Durán and Davey Moore. Resto unexpectedly beat the highly touted Collins in a 10-round unanimous decision; however, after the fight, Resto's gloves were found to be missing a significant amount of padding, illegal tampering which allowed Resto to increase his punches' effectiveness against Collins during the fight and cause tremendous damage. What began as a boxing match turned into a life-altering moment for both participants. VS DAVEY MOORE 3/21/63 VS MITSUNORI SEKI 3/1/64 VS RAUL SORIANO II 12/11/65
Juho and Jarrko and I talk about love stories, boxing as a metaphor, what’s important in life and how not to be cynical. For more information about TIFF go here. IMDB Trailer More info about the film here. Synopsis Winner of a top prize at this year’s Cannes festival, the irresistibly charming debut feature from Juho Kuosmanen is a funny and forlorn comedy-drama inspired by the real-life showdown between Finnish boxer Olli Mäki and American champion Davey Moore in 1962 Helsinki. Funny, forlorn, and irresistibly charming, Juho Kuosmanen's assured debut featureThe Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki, which won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at this year's Cannes, is inspired by the true story of Finland's most successful boxer of the 1960s. Shot in black and white with scrupulous attention to period detail, the film centres on the prelude to Mäki's historic fight in Helsinki with American Davey Moore, the bantamweight champion of the world. Almost painfully open and ingenuous, Olli (Jarkko Lahti) is a small-town boy who is just as happy baking bread as he is in the ring — and he's even happier when he's with Raija (Oona Airola), the level-headed beauty he finds himself falling for. Elis (Eero Milonoff ), Olli's manager, is the exact opposite of his fighter: a former boxer himself, Elis is a hyperbolic showman who promises the press corps a "spectacle never seen in Finland," a world-historic event worthy of the Americans. As Olli begins wilting under the pressure from the constant press scrums, his desperate attempts to lose weight, and his separation from Raija, Elis faces his own challenges from his wife (who effortlessly sees through his various hustles), his financial backers, and his American partners. Full of trenchant commentary about the sports industry and, by extension, the entertainment industry — there's an amazing sequence at a post-bout cocktail party where it's quite clear that the two athletes are the least important people there — the film also wittily depicts a small nation's unease and excitement about its "debut" on the world stage. A rueful yet delightfully disarming ode to lost innocence, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki is also one of the most indelible romances you will see this year. Biography Juho Kuosmanen is a Helsinki based filmmaker. His previous short films have won several prizes in prominent festivals including Cannes’ Cinéfondation and Locarno. He graduated from the ELO Helsinki Film School of Aalto University in 2014. Along with his studies Kuosmanen has also acted and directed for the stage and worked closely with the avant-garde opera ensemble West Coast Kokkola Opera. The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki is Juho Kuosmanen’s first feature length film. ---------- For more information about my podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit my site here.
