1980 - Newport, Rhode Island. On the morning of March 22, 1980, the nude body of 19-year-old Diane Drake washed up on Easton's Beach between Middletown and Newport, RI. She had vanished the night before on her way to work. Forty-five years later, her killer remains at large. Yet, despite the passage of time, Diane's family continues to seek answers and keep her memory alive—though justice today may not look the same as it did in 1980. In Part 2 of Diane's story, we explore the final hours before her disappearance, revelations from her autopsy, and the theories that could finally bring her case closer to justice. 1980 - Newport, Rhode Island. On March 21, 1980, as wind and rain swept through Middletown, Rhode Island, 19-year-old Diane Drake got ready for work. But she never made it there. The next morning, her nude body washed up on Easton's Beach. Witnesses later reported seeing Diane the night she disappeared, walking—and even hitchhiking—along the three-mile route to work despite the harsh weather. But Diane had always warned her younger sister, Jean, never to hitchhike. Would she have ignored her own advice? Forty-five years later, Jean is still searching for answers. And to this day, she believes one thing: Diane Drake knew her killer. How can architecture firms successfully transition to a hybrid work model that balances flexibility, connection, and structure? In this episode of Practice Disrupted, we explore hybrid work models in architecture firms, using the firm Shepley Bulfinch as an example. We're joined by three leaders from Shepley Bulfinch: Jenn Zagarella, Vice President of Administration; Jim Martin, Vice President and CIO; and Jim Chambers, Vice President of Practice Management. Together, they discuss how architecture firms can navigate the challenges of staying connected in today's evolving workplace through hybrid models.First, the panel provides an overview of Shepley's pre-pandemic work environment, focusing on the strong foundations the firm established and how these prepared them for a smooth transition to hybrid work. Jenn, Jim, and Jim share the strategies, tools, and technologies Shepley uses to build a cohesive, flexible work environment. Then, we explore how Shepley's hybrid model supports effective communication, continuous learning, location-based needs, and a sense of community. They also discuss the tech required to support their model and highlight the importance of defining what hybrid work means for your specific firm. Our hybrid model has helped to really reinforce, and in some ways, formally articulate the flexibility and the trust that we place into our people. It's helped us to be able to hire people that don't happen to be close to one of our studios. It's actually, in a few cases, allowed us to bring people back that we were sad to lose. Now that we're capable and comfortable working in a different manner, we can, we can bring them back. - Jim Chamber To wrap up the conversation, the group reflects on the impact of hybrid work on Shepley's culture, trust, and connections. They also address common questions and concerns leaders may have when implementing a hybrid model in their practice.Tune in next week for a conversation with an architect turned UX Strategist. In the first four months of this presidential election year, nearly 5.5 million legal firearms were purchased in the US, according to FBI data, while the candidates from both major parties have starkly different positions on gun control. Vice-President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, advocates stricter regulations, while Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump is pro-gun rights. These contrasting stances are already resonating differently with likely voters. David Liu, owner of Arcadia Firearm & Safety in Arcadia, California, serves a predominantly Asian community 30 minutes from Monterey Park, where a tragic mass shooting during a Chinese New Year Festival left 11 dead and nine injured last year. I'm a Trump supporter. And it's not because (Republicans) support guns that I vote for them. Because I look overall on the candidates. I prefer Trump's overall policy," Liu said. "I will not vote for a guy just because he said he supports guns. That's not the point of voting for the president." Liu said that over the past two months, his sales have been slow, attributing it to a new 11 percent tax on gun sales and ammunition imposed in July by California's Democrat-controlled legislature to fund violence prevention. This is in addition to the existing federal tax of 10 or 11 percent on firearms. About 16.7 million firearms were sold in the United States last year, a 4 percent decline from 2022, according to SafeHome.org, which analyzed the FBI's national instant background-check data. The National Shooting Sports Foundation found that firearm sales to Asian Americans rose by 43 percent in 2020 compared with 2019, a response to a rise in hate crimes against the community during the pandemic. The US has more guns than people, with estimates ranging from 425 million to 475 million in a country of 333 million people as of 2022. A Quinnipiac University poll conducted in June found that only 4 percent of likely voters considered gun violence the most important issue in choosing a president, with the economy taking precedence. Nearly half of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents own a gun, compared with 20 percent of Democrats and those who lean liberal, Pew Research Center found. 20%。Carl Bogus, a law professor at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, told China Daily that the Republican Party considers the gun lobby to be an "essential" part of its political coalition. Trump has called himself "the best friend gun owners have ever had in the White House". He told an audience in February at the National Rifle Association's Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that "no one will lay a finger on your firearms" if he wins. In his administration, Trump reversed a law that restricted people with mental illness to purchase a gun, and banned bump stocks that can convert semiautomatic weapons into a machine gun-like weapon. In June, the Supreme Court lifted the ban, citing the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Harris, head of the first White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, has repeatedly discussed more gun control on the campaign trail and held a summit against gun violence in Atlanta in June. On Wednesday, after four people were killed in a school shooting in Georgia, Harris addressed gun violence at schools. It's just outrageous that every day in our country ... that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive," she said. On episode 20 of the Brand Slam podcast, host Steve Rosa is joined by a standout group of interns from the (add)prentice summer 2024 program: Jessica Kalmowitz, Ella Waryas and Kenzie Freedman. A major focus of the discussion is on brand authenticity and the critical role it plays in today's marketing landscape. The interns delve into how brands can build genuine connections with their audiences and why transparency is key. They explore how their generation, often termed “the anxious generation,” values honesty and open dialogue, and how brands can adapt to meet these expectations. Having grown up with challenges such as Covid-19 school closings, the trauma of school and mass shootings and the pervasive influence of growing up on screens, their perspectives offer valuable insights into the importance of trust and authenticity. They share their skepticism towards overly polished influencer endorsements and emphasize the importance of relatable and honest content in fostering trust with consumers. The conversation also touches on how (add)ventures prioritizes trust and authenticity within its own company culture and extends these values to its external brand strategies. Our summer interns were the best cohort ever. Jessica, a rising senior at the University of Maryland majoring in public relations with a business minor, has played a key role in developing engaging content for both clients and internal communication initiatives. Ella, a graphic design major and athlete from Roger Williams University, has significantly impacted the team through her design skills and leadership. Kenzie, an incoming junior at Penn State majoring in public relations with a minor in recreation, park and tourism management, has brought a fresh and creative perspective to the marketing team. Nicholas Alahverdian's obituary appeared on a memorial site called Ever Loved. It detailed how the man, who grew up in foster care became a Harvard Graduate and a vocal critic of Rhode Island's childcare system after suffering sexual abuse as a child.  It also detailed how Alahverdian died of Hodgin's Lymphoma at 32 years old, leaving behind a wife and two young children who remained at his bedside as he died. Alahverdian's death was a lie, an elaborate scheme created by Nicholas Rossi, a man charged with sexually assaulting a former girlfriend in Orem, Utah as well as multiple complaints against him in Rhode Island for alleged domestic violence.  David Rossi, the stepfather says at an early age Nicholas would hit his mother, grandmother, and siblings, and wouldn't listen in school. Alahverdian was placed in psychiatric care. Nicholas Alahverdian, using the name Rossi, was accused of assaulting a young woman he met at Sinclair Community College in Ohio. The two had lunch together.  Alahverdian offered to walk the co-ed to her next class. The coed claims Alahverdian then pinned her against a wall in a basement, groped her, and masturbated. Alahverdian apologized and asked the girl not to tell anybody. She made a police report and Alahverdian, aka Rossi, was convicted of public indecency and sexual imposition, and was required to register as a sex offender. Two years later, police are called to an apartment in Rhode Island.  Officers can hear arguing and screaming. When a woman comes to the door, she has marks on her face neck, and left eye and her right eye is swelling. The woman tells police she and Alahverdian were arguing and when she tried to leave he slapped her in the face. Police arrest Alahverdian who proclaims his innocence and begins banging his head on the bars in the back of the squad car. Officers have to use pepper spray to make him stop trying to hurt himself. Alahverdian pleads no-contest to domestic simple assault. Testing reveals Alahverdian's DNA is present in a rape case, and other allegations have already been lodged. Fraud charges also land in Alahverdian's lap, and this is when he fakes his death and heads overseas. The death of Nicholas Alahverdian is met with skepticism.  Alahverdian's foster mother Sharon Lane said she was contacted by Alahverdian's biological mother.   The minute Sharon Lane read the obituary, she believed it was written by Alahverdian himself. Utah authorities continued investigating the first rape allegation against Nicholas Alahverdian and issued a warrant for his arrest seven months after he supposedly died. An FBI search of Alahverdian's iCloud account and cell phone records led investigators to Scotland. As investigations were looking for Nicholas Alahverdian and Nichols Rossi in the United States, a man named Arthur Knight was being treated for Covid-19 at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow.  He had been living a happy new life,  married a woman named Miranda, and worked as a tutor, but then he suffered a serious case of pneumonitis, caused by Covid-19. Someone recognized him through his distinctive tattoos. They were a match to those from a Pawtucket police booking photo of him.  In December 2021,  they arrested the convicted sex offender in the Glasgow hospital. Authorities say Knight was just one of Alahverdian's 16 known aliases, which include Nicholas Rossi, Nicholas Brown, Arthur Brown, and Arthur Knight-Brown. Nicholas Alahverdian fought extradition back to the US.  For over two years, Alahverdian exhausted every legal avenue available in the UK. Ultimately the courts ruled he was a wanted fugitive and agreed to the United States' request to send him home.  Joining Nancy Grace Today: Greg Ahlgren  – International Attorney-at-Law at the US-MX Law Group, Ltd. & DRT Alliance/Diaz Reus International Law Firm Dr. Jeff Kieliszewski  - Forensic Psychologist, Author: " Dark Sides;" YouTube: Dr. Jeff Kieliszewski,  rv Brandt – Senior Inspector, US Marshals Service International Investigations Branch; Chief Inspector, DOJ Office of International Affairs, US Embassy Kingston, Jamaica; Author: “SOLO SHOT: CURSE OF THE BLUE STONE” – AVAILABLE ON AMAZON IN JANUARY; ALSO “FLYING SOLO: Top of the World;” Twitter: @JackSoloAuthor Brett Brown - Executive Director of SASS Go (Surviving Assault Standing Strong, a Nonprofit on a mission to eradicate abuse, trafficking, and violence against women and girls globally; @sassgoglobal on FB, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok  Tim White - Investigative Reporter and Managing Editor for WPRI-TV (A CBS News affiliate), Co-Author: “The Last Good Heist: The Inside Story of The Biggest Single Payday in the Criminal History of the Northeast;" Adjunct Professor of Journalism at Roger Williams University in RI; X: @timwhiteRI, FB: Tim White-WPRI   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of the IoT: The Internet of Threats podcast, host Eric Greenwald and Larry Pesce (Finite State Director of Product Security Research and Analysis) delve into the recently announced U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a cybersecurity labeling program for IoT devices - a long-anticipated directive of Executive Order 14028.   Larry and Eric explore how, in contrast to static ratings like ENERGY STAR, this dynamic IoT security score will attempt to reflect the continually evolving landscape of cybersecurity threats and controls. They delve into the efficacy of this voluntary labeling program: Will consumers use it? Will manufacturers comply (and raise prices) or ignore it?   Together, Larry and Eric discuss the initial criteria for assigning these security scores and the user-friendly implementation strategies like QR codes. They also tackle the implications of this program on various connected devices, from baby monitors to solar panels, analyzing whether this voluntary program will see widespread adoption across various industries with varied potential risks (from privacy violations to deadly fires).   In the discussion, Larry turns the tables and asks Eric about the FCC's unexpected role in enforcing IoT labeling compliance and how this labeling initiative aligns with the broader trend towards transparency and accountability in device security regulation and progress.    Interview with Larry Pesce    Since joining Finite State, Larry has been providing expert product security program design and development as well as IoT pen testing services and guidance to product security teams worldwide. Roger Williams University did not notify Bryan's family of their son's disappearance for almost a week.Months later, as summer was coming to an end, a family walking along the shore of Hog Island came upon a lone hiking boot. Inside was a wool sock and a severed foot. 2- DNA tests eventually confirmed the remains to be those of Bryan Nisenfeld. What really happened to Bryan Nisenfeld? Whether an accident, a self-made choice, or foul play, Bryan's parents hold steadfast to their belief that more could have been done if only Bryan's disappearance had been reported to police, or to them, and acted upon much sooner. At the very least, maybe they would have some answers. If you have information that could help bring a conclusion to Bryan Nisenfeld's case, please call 877-RI-SOLVE.Shop Sarah Madeira Day with code: DOWNEAST for 20% off your order of unstretched and paper printsView source material and photos for this episode at darkdowneast.comFollow @darkdowneast on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTokTo suggest a case, email hello@darkdowneast.comSupport Dark Downeast on Buy Me a CoffeeShop Dark Downeast merch at darkdowneast.com/shop

My guest today and I almost met in 1999 in Columbus Isle, but just missed each other by a few weeks. G.O.'s spoke often of my nicknamed guest over the years, so I feel like I knew him a little. After the interview, we realized that we attended the same EXGO Reunion in 2008 in Cancun! His first season was in Club Med Turks and Caicos for the 1989/1990 season as a Scuba G.O., with Kenton Smith as his Chief of Sports. He was born in New York, grew up in the UK, and now lives in Mallorca. His rather long and amazing name is Nick Stael von Holstein, but you probably know him by another name. Please help me welcome to the podcast, the one and only, Winnie!! Winnie worked for Club Med from 1989 to 2000 in such villages as St. Lucia, Cancun, Playa Blanca, Martinique, Sonora Bay, and Columbus Isle. Before Club Med, Winnie graduated with a Marine Biology degree from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island and became a scuba instructor at just 18 years old. And, as it turns out, one of my favorite people in Club Med, gave Winnie his nickname within 24 hours of Winnie arriving in Turks! If you were an early 90s G.O., then you will love this episode. Winnie name-drops so many people from his past, it will make your head spin how many legends he has worked with-Cowboy, Jean-Paul Morales, Hammer, Kevin Batt, Red, Cheez, Jenner, Sparrow, Lisa Henson (my 1st boss!), Hansel Moss, Angie Boucher, Grant Simmons, Roast Beef, Scotty De Palma, Flower, Eric Turner and Dave the Wave, to name but a few. As you can imagine, Winnie is here to share stories and does not disappoint! Too many to recount here in this small space, but the stories that stuck out for me personally were happy hour at “The House of Kos” in St. Lucia in 1992, Hammer's wedding in Turks in 1997 (and that same season he cut a very famous G.O's long “Red” hair) and a Christmas Day scuba dive in Cancun in 1997 with a school of dolphins that will give you goosebumps. Please enjoy this episode with Winnie!!**My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. February 6, 1997. Bristol, Rhode Island. Bryan Nisenfeld, an 18-year old freshman at Roger Williams University, vanishes after leaving an afternoon class and most of his possessions are found in his dorm room. Nearly seven months later, a severed foot and a shinbone are found washed up on a beach located a few miles from campus and while they are positively identified as belonging to Bryan, the rest of his remains are never recovered. Suspicion is placed on a former student and friend of Bryan's who supposedly made a threatening phone call to him prior to his disappearance, but there is no evidence to prove that foul play took place. Was Bryan Nisenfield's death a homicide, a suicide or an accidental fall into the water? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a cold case involving a university student which still does not a definitive resolution after nearly 26 years. In this latest publication in the TII Heritage series, the long prehistory of Kells and its hinterland is shown to be written on the landscape in foundation trenches and boundary ditches, pits, post-holes, hearths, and myriad other marks of human life, which were discovered along the route of the M3 Clonee to Kells motorway project and recorded by an archaeological team from Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd. The story begins with Mesolithic hunter-gatherers and continues, chapter by chapter, over a span of c. 5,000 years, recording the homes, burial grounds, work and worship of Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age communities and bringing us at last to the threshold of history, in the Iron Age/early medieval transition period. Kells was not yet the seat of a famous monastery at that time but had already become a central place in the region, with a tribal capital at Commons of Lloyd, on the hill that overlooks the town today. The Road to Kells: Prehistoric Archaeology of the M3 Navan to Kells and N52 Kells Bypass Road Project, is available now through Wordwell Books and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Together they explore how Larry began his long and accomplished career as a pen tester and security and research expert. Eric and Larry also examine the pressure that lower production budgets impose on product security professionals, the questionable value of regulation as a catalyst to drive product security investment and improvements, and the potential role SBOMs can play in cybersecurity.     Interview with Larry Pesce    Since joining Finite State, Larry has been serving as a senior consultant, providing expert product security program design and development and IoT pen testing guidance and services to product security teams worldwide. He is also a Certified Instructor at the SANS Institute and has co-hosted the Paul's Security Weekly podcast since 2005. How Larry's early interest in taking things apart led to a career in embedded device security and, eventually, to Finite State How the drive to lower production costs pressures manufacturers to sacrifice invisible differentiators like product security Whether regulation can serve as an effective mechanism in encouraging product security improvements How companies can work to overcome the complexities of product security programs The SBOM as a product security tool and whether it could also be a roadmap attackers can use to target your connected device ecosystem   Find Larry on LinkedIn: Larry Pesce: https://www.linkedin.com/in/larry-pesce-6715b73/   Learn more about Finite State: https://finitestate.io/   Thank you for listening to this episode of the IoT: The Internet of Threats podcast, powered by Finite State — the leading supply chain cyber-security solution provider for connected devices and embedded systems.   If you enjoyed this episode, click subscribe to stay connected and leave a review to get the word out about the podcast.   To learn more about building a robust product security program, protecting your connected devices, and complying with emerging regulations and technical standards, visit https://finitestate.io/
