TMS Ep566: Regulating OTT, Punjab crop mix, new-age stocks, Afghan refugees

The Indian digital media is once again on the brink of government scrutiny. The draft Broadcasting Services Bill aims to bring Cable TV and OTTs under a single regulatory framework, which can potentially stifle content innovation and autonomy. Kasthuri Akhil asks experts if the government can regulate what you watch online. Like the previous attempts, the new self-regulation for on-demand video streaming platforms is also being viewed with scepticism in light of increasing censorship. Analysts suggest that the proposed Bill needs cautious examination. Meanwhile, issues such as stubble burning incidents and groundwater depletion have fuelled intense debates in the state of Punjab. Fingers have been pointed at paddy cultivation in Punjab, prompting the Supreme Court to propose phasing out paddy in favour of ‘less water-intensive' crops. Today's Special report by Thareek Ahmed attempts to answer if Punjab needs a new crop mix. Looks like, phasing out paddy cultivation with other crops in Punjab can be a possible remedy to tackle air pollution in North India. Moving on to markets, shares of new-age companies are on a tear. Over the past three months, these stocks have rallied between 5 and 30 per cent on the bourses as against a 1 per cent rise in the benchmark indices. Nikita Vashisht spoke to experts to decode the drivers of the rally in stocks of new-age companies, and assess if they are a good investment bet at current levels. Watch this report. New age companies certainly have a promising future on the Indian stock exchanges. But just a few hundred kilometres away, Afghan refugees in Pakistan are facing an uncertain future. The Pakistani government's decision to expel 1.6 million ‘undocumented' Afghans from its territory has created a humanitarian crisis along its western borders. But why is Pakistan deporting Afghan refugees? Listen to this episode of the podcast for answers.

#280 In this thought-provoking episode, Guy talked with Clint Ober, the creator of the Earthing and Grounding Movement, to share his powerful journey of transformation. Clint's near-death experience led him to the realization that everything he owned actually owned him. This revelation inspired him to sell everything and embrace a new perspective on life. Guy explored the importance of integrating spiritual lessons into our daily lives and emphasizes the value of finding the "one percenters" that can make a difference in our lives. Tune in for an inspiring conversation on finding peace, love, and freedom within ourselves. About Clint: Clinton Ober is CEO of Earth FX Inc., a research and development company located in Palm Springs, California. He first learned of grounding when installing Cable TV systems in Billings, Montana in the early 1960's. A decade later, he formed Telecrafter Corporation and built it into the largest provider of cable installation services in the United States. This company specialized in proper grounding of cable installations for safety and TV signal stability. In the 1980's, he turned his attention to the developing computer industry and partnered with McGraw-Hill to distribute live digital news services, via cable, to PCs. This led to the development of the first cable modem and an increased awareness of need for proper system grounding. Following a health challenge in 1995, he retired and embarked on a personal journey looking for a higher purpose in life. During his travels, he noticed people wearing plastic and rubber soled shoes that insulate the body from earth.  He wondered if no longer being naturally grounded could affect us. The question led to an experiment that suggested grounding alone reduced chronic pain and improved sleep. There after he developed a working hypothesis: Earth grounding the human body normalizes functioning of all body systems (Corollary: The body utilizes the earth's electrical potential and free electrons to maintain its internal electrical stability for the normal functioning of all self regulating and self-healing systems). Over the past twenty years, he has supported a host of research studies (Earthing Institute) that collectively demonstrate that grounding alone reduces inflammation and promotes normal functioning of all body systems. Decoding the Cable Revolution: How 24/7 Politics Shaped a Generation and Our Democracy with Kathryn Cramer Brownell The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome back to another episode of The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and we're broadcasting from just outside of Washington, D.C. Please check out our show notes today for more information about Smithsonian Associates and their wonderful programs.  The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series is dedicated to fostering thoughtful dialogues on subjects that matter. Today, we have a special guest, Smithsonian Associate Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell, an associate professor of history at Purdue University. She's here to discuss her new book, "24/7 Politics: Cable Television and the Fragmenting of America from Watergate to Fox News." Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up, so please check out our show notes today for specifics on Dr. Brownell's presentation titled: "24/7 Politics: Cable Television and the Fragmenting of America from Watergate to Fox News." As television began to overtake the political landscape in the 1960s, network broadcast companies, bolstered by powerful lobbying interests, dominated screens across the nation. Yet over the next three decades, the expansion of a different technology, cable, changed all of this. Drawing on her new book, 24/7 Politics: Cable Television and the Fragmenting of America from Watergate to Fox News, Kathryn Cramer Brownell tells the story of how the cable industry worked with political leaders to create an entirely new approach to television, one that tethered politics to profits and divided and distracted Americans by feeding their appetite for entertainment—frequently at the expense of fostering responsible citizenship. Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell argues today that cable television itself is not to blame for today's rampant polarization and scandal politics: It's the intentional restructuring of television as a political institution. She describes how cable innovations—from C-SPAN coverage of congressional debates in the 1980s to MTV's foray into presidential politics in the 1990s—took on network broadcasting using market forces, giving rise to a more decentralized media world. Brownell reveals to us how cable became an unstoppable medium for political communication that prioritized cult followings and loyalty to individual brands, fundamentally reshaped party politics, and, in the process, sowed the seeds of democratic upheaval. She also examines how cable created new possibilities for antiestablishment voices and opened a pathway to political prominence for seemingly unlikely figures like Donald Trump by playing to narrow audiences and cultivating division instead of common ground, but how people became tools to cable networks! That, of course, is our guest today, Smithsonian Associate Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell, reading from her new book, 24/7 Politics: Cable Television and the Fragmenting of America from Watergate to Fox News. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series on radio and podcast Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell. My thanks to Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell for joining today's show. Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brown will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up, and the title of her presentation is "24/7 Politics: Cable Television and the Fragmenting of America from Watergate to Fox News."  Dr. Kathryn Cramer Brownell has written the new book, available at Apple Books,  24/7 Politics: Cable Television and the Fragmenting of America from Watergate to Fox News. My thanks, always, to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show, and my thanks to you, my wonderful, wonderful Not Old Better Show audience on radio and podcast.  Please be well, be safe, and let's talk about better…The Not Old Better Show.  Thanks, everybody, and we'll see you next week.  Check out Smithsonian Associates HERE: https://smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/cable-tv-upended-american-politics

You've probably noticed there are a lot of streaming platforms available these days. There are the traditional big players like Netflix, Amazon and Apple. There's Disney, with decades of family content, as well as superheroes and Star Wars. But there are also streaming platforms that cater to...everything: Horror films, British TV, Major League Soccer, Professional Tennis, theatrical performances, documentaries, influential classic films and the list goes on. All of those cost money. Add 'em up and you have something approaching or exceeding a traditional cable bill. So it's not serving most consumers well, the streamers are currently struggling to gain market share, while cancelling or not even releasing expensive projects that they've already made and are now pushing to introduce advertising.Add all that up, and what does the future of streaming look like to you? Soundbar Mouts from Monoprice.com Vintage vs Modern Gear We received the following email from Chris asking us to take a look at Vintage vs Modern Gear: In your latest episode, you were discussing receivers. And I got to thinking: Are the receivers of today drastically better than the component stereo systems of the 80s? So if today, you put a component system from the 80s in the same environment as a receiver from the 2020s, could you tell the difference? We have seen the resurgence of the turntable, will we also see the resurgence of the component stereo?  Separate tuner, amp, equalizer, etc.  Can you explain a little in layman's terms the way the music is delivered today via compression and frequency reduction (Spotify, XM, Apple Music, etc)?   Meaning does the vinyl LP for example, go from -20 kHz to +140 kHz whereas streaming compresses to -10 kHz to +80 kHz, so you could get a better audio experience with vinyl? Vintage Gear Size and Weight - Vintage amplifiers are heavy by today's standards. In their heyday, owning one that weighed fifty to one hundred pounds wasn't unheard of. A majority of that weight came from the massive transformers housed inside. Those large transformers let the amplifier drive demanding  speakers with ease and let the system run at a higher current.   Most vintage receivers used Class A/B amps, which were more efficient and ran cooler than their Class A counterparts. Power - During the "power wars" of the '70s and '80s, manufacturers kept increasing how much power their amps could output, really pushing the limits of the amplifier technology of the time. For example, the Pioneer SX-1980 from 1978 cranked out an astonishing 270 watts per channel. Electronics - a majority of amps were hardwired and didn't have an over-reliance on a circuit board, meaning they were more user serviceable if you knew what you were doing, and often cheaper to fix if you didn't. New Gear Performance - Class A/B amps sound better today than ever, given the significant improvements in transformer technology and component circuitry. Modern amplifiers have less distortion than older ones, and you get better performance for a lot less money.  It's a digital world - With modern amplifiers and receivers, you're gaining modern connections. From HDMIs to optical and coaxial connections, having digital inputs on your amplifier means you can hook up your TV, gaming consoles, CD player, and more. The sound quality is clearer and more precise. You can also use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and an app-based interface to stream your music for extra convenience. Which one sounds better?  Ready for our non-answer? It depends. There are certainly receivers from the 70s and 80s that sound better than receivers built today. But you are talking about the high end products. For example, the classic Pioneer SX1980 is rated at 0.03% THD and back in 1980, it would cost you $1,295 to pick one up. That's about $5,450 in today's dollars. Yamaha's A-S501 is rated at 0.019% THD, and can be had for $549. Vinyl vs Digital Frequency response - Both can reproduce sound that is beyond what a human can hear.  It comes down to how the digital music is sampled and in some cases compressed. Low quality mp3 and AAC files throw away much of the recording so you are not getting all of the original. Let's put  that aside because none of us listen to low quality music. There is a debate, however, about high quality mp3 and AAC (anything greater than 256Kbps sampled at 44.1KHz)  vs lossless. I personally can't hear the difference and have done many blind A/B tests with those who claim that they can hear the difference only to conclude that none of my self proclaimed audiophile friends can hear the difference either. I won't say that no one can hear the difference reliably, but I will say that the number of those who can is very small.  When it comes to vinyl it's a preference for the sound. I prefer the clean sound of high quality digital. It's easy to take my entire library with me everywhere I go. Braden loves his vinyl. It's warmer and more nostalgic. One is not better than the other, it's a personal preference.  I am happy that I can now have an audio experience that was only available to people with deep pockets back in the 80s. Today, everyone can have a system that my 20 year old self only dreamed about. And you can take it on the go!

Two 19-year-olds were shot earlier this week and a 16-year-old was shot and killed outside of Kennedy Krieger Institute on Monday night. Why can the city get control of this teen violence? Baltimore County Inspector General Kelly Madigan joins the show to discuss her findings over the last fiscal year in Baltimore County. Also, cable tv viewership is down almost 50% from where it was last year. Do you still have cable? K Sera discusses about subscriptions, access to digital multimedia, ownership versus license, generational differences, and the wider trends that will shape our future. Micah adds the capitalism perspective and how our current economic systems are accelerating the demise of the middle class. Phil goes a bit overboard with subscription lightbulbs.   Shownotes: N/A   K Sera's afterthoughts: Subscription Hell is an apt title.   Since recording this episode, I have continued to turn this subject over in my mind.   Maybe this speaks to my economic class (and the economic class of people I spend time with), but I notice a lot of fast fashion, fast furniture, and fast meals. The clothing we buy is low quality and flimsy, but also stylish and easy to mass produce - a LOT of clothing ends up in landfills. Fast furniture has some truly beneficial qualities for the consumer who moves a lot or wants something functional, trendy, and easy to replace when they decide to change up their decor. Being made of inexpensive, light material makes these pieces super convenient for the individual consumer, but again, these pieces don't last and also end up in landfills in higher numbers and more frequently than quality pieces. They are much easier to damage and they can't really be repaired in the same way a higher quality piece can - or, the cost to repair it is actually more than just tossing it and buying a new one to replace it. The magnitude of waste is really upsetting.   Fast food could probably have its own topic. Why would you ever bother learn to cook or even care about quality nutrition when you can save time and effort by just picking up take out? Why would you make and bring a home-cooked lunch to work when you can just buy microwavable box-dinners that can be ready in less than 3 minutes? The problem is that those foods are full of so much sodium and preservatives and who knows what else, which will have long term health impacts that will eventually catch up with you. BUT THAT'S FUTURE ME'S PROBLEM. Also, health care? Who's she? Have we met?   I guess, my hope for the future is that we can find a balance between convenience, quality, and the long term health and environmental impacts. I hope that we continue to work towards more sustainable consumption, which, in a way, digital access to entertainment is a significant contribution. You don't throw your library containing thousands of digital books, music and movies into a landfill, after all. So, that's good. But that brings us back to the issue at hand: subscription hell.   Dividing our paychecks into half a dozen subscriptions or more on top of other bills, which are, also basically monthly subscriptions if you think about it... Where the hell is the pie slice for our savings? How the hell are we ever going to build wealth or equity if we're trapped in a cycle of endless subscriptions bleeding us slowly from a thousand cuts?   This forces a consumer with a limited pool of resources to prioritize and cut out the excess. The problem is, for a lot of people, there isn't a lot of fat left to trim, and some of the "fat we can trim" might be extremely important in other interpersonal or emotional ways that make that choice a lot harder. Entertainment might sound like a luxury or a frill, but I'd argue that a healthy mind requires at least some enrichment.    And with that, I think I need some enrichment in the form of solving shrine puzzles in Zelda: totk for an hour or so.     Phil's after thoughts: I am, right now as I type, cancelling my Comcast internet service. This is how much this episode enraged me. Comcast decided, on their own, to just double the internet price for reasons. There is no speed improvement, or data quality or higher consistency or anything that actually makes it worth double the price, it is just simply: you pay us more now.   I would argue that the internet is not a luxury item, but that is beside the point. The truth is every company wants to be Comcast, and heaven forbid they start making everything that is necessary to sustain oneself as a subscription service. Perhaps it already is (depending on how we stretch the definition of Subscription).   So the silver lining (or positivity spin): we are training the next generation to be more aware of purchasing quality things. I had some "generation training" just yesterday about how Millennials and Gen-Z behave (stereotypically) differently compared to Baby Boomers (and Gen-X for that matter) when it comes to how we treat our health and work-life balance. Corporations realize that the younger white-collar workers will not be treated as wage-slaves and refuse to work 50+ hours a week for a job that shows no loyalty back. The fact that the younger generation is more health conscious is primarily due to the fact that they are being priced out of healthcare, so they have to "mitigate the risk" as much as they can (rather than eat the copious amounts of fast food the previous generation indulged in). I see this behavior of not eating the right foods or drinking in a healthy way in my parent's generation. More young people, for example, drink far less compared to their older colleagues.   Basically, because we are living in a two-speed economic system, the middle class is literally "showing, not telling" their children that we accept hand-me-downs as not as an embarrassing thing, but more of a shrewd and savvy thing. Parents are really "subscribing" (ironically) to the "buy-nothing culture" (on Facebook, of all places) to prevent things from piling into landfills. The children (from my vantage point) ask where these things come from, and they are tacitly understanding that the "Re-USE" part of "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle" part is important too.   Fast Fashion is of course the complete mirror opposite to the younger generation (with social media pushing out fashion tips at a rate faster than ever before), so it is not all good news here. But I do believe we are in the beginnings of a recycle renaissance because of the sheer necessity to just simply survive.   More people are cutting CABLE TV out of their lives, to the point where even FOX NEWS is concerned. It is only a matter of time before "going to the library to check out the DVD box sets" will replace Netflix, HBO, Disney Plus, and others. If not, the "VHS tips/tricks" of the 90's will come back, but this time with private servers, 1080/4k televisions, and networked intranet hard drives.   Oh, and the fact that "depression era recipes" like "how to cook 10 tasty dishes with rice and beans" is making a comeback means we are just speed running the 1920's, but at the same time it is going back to the roots of cooking healthier and basic proteins/carbohydrates too. Except this time we have far more convenient pressure cookers and other gadgets (which are sadly all too affordable due to where they are manufactured, but I digress) that help ease the cooking process.   And as far as entertainment goes, I find myself borrowing/lending more often. I am going to ask my old Mentor to see if he is willing to lend me a skateboard (his son is a trainer/coach/instructor). Why pick up skateboarding? Because that is what middle-age fathers do! But on a serious note, I believe that entertainment will be going back to its roots as well; which of course center around more primitive luxuries (like going to a friend's house to watch the latest sportsball). What I am trying to say is people will find a way to entertain themselves despite the massive downside/dopamine-reduction.   So as cheerful and as positive as I try to make this out to be, I feel that it is our duty as Americans to be as spiteful as possible, salut with our center finger, and relish in the great satisfaction that subscription services will die as they attempt to strangle the last of our pennies from our overtapped wallets. If the only logical choice is to trim the fat, Americans will always find new sources of free fat.   P.S. As for our digital access (not belongings, since the digital files DO NOT BELONG TO US), in the podcast it was already discussed on how to "preserve them" outside the reach of the internet. Just as farmers are hacking their John Deere Trackers to repair them (which was finally put through the courts, and the legal system admonished corporate sleaziness of locking their systems), we Americans can be very crafty in getting what we want. And if they make it difficult, the "Free Market" will have a "Grey Market" competitor. If they make it illegal, well we have a darker shade of grey for that unfortunately.

It's unclear if this is tenable. * Fresh-Squeezed Organic- No matter how it's spun, SGE is basically all bad news for web publishers- There will be less "listings" in generative answers, and less incentive for users to click through- How will publishers adapt to a world where Search becomes a less accessible channel? * Just Not Clicking- Similarly to publishers, advertisers will likely find clicks a lot harder to come by- eCPCs are almost certain to explode higher as the current demand levels chase far less inventory- How will advertisers adapt to an increasingly winner-take-all ecosystem? * Conclusion- Does The Search Box go the way of the DVD (dead), or Cable TV (diminished, but still here & part of a larger platform)?AI-Enabled Cognitive Search: Google has introduced a real-time cognitive search that combines Bard AI-synthesized content with regular Google search results. When combined with Google Shop, this feature could prove beneficial for websites and e-commerce enterprises, providing a unique selling point for Google.

The Real Truth About Health Free 17 Day Live Online Conference Podcast

Is Grounding A Form Of Immunotherapy? Clinton Ober• http://www.UltimateLongevity.com • Book – Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever? #ClintonOber #Grounding #GoundingMovement Clinton Ober is the innovator behind the Grounding Movement and author of Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever? This book introduces readers to the landmark discovery that living in contact with the Earth's natural surface charge - being grounded - naturally discharges and prevents chronic inflammation in the body. This effect has massive health implications because of the well-established link between chronic inflammation and all chronic diseases, including the diseases of aging and the aging process itself. Clinton, First learned about grounding when installing Cable TV systems in Billings, Montana in the early 1960s. A decade later, he formed Telecrafter Corporation that specialized in proper grounding of cable installations for safety and TV signal stability. In the 1980s, he turned his attention to the developing computer industry and partnered with McGraw-Hill to distribute live digital news services. This Led to the development cable modems with the proper system grounding. From his years expertise in the grounding of hardware technology, he developed the working hypothesis on how: Grounding the human body to the Earth could normalize the functioning of all of the body's systems. The idea about how the body utilizes the earth's electrical potential and free electrons to maintain its internal electrical stability, normalizing all of its self-regulating and self-healing systems.Over the past twenty years has worked extensively on health benefits of grounding the human body, which have shown impressive improvements in…inflammation, sleep, pain & stiffness, circulation, blood pressure, cortisol, stress, depression, anxiety, tiredness, fatigue, energy, mood, blood glucose, blood viscosity, immunity, thyroid function, metabolism, wound healing, HRV, vagal tone, serum electrolytes, athletic performance & recovery, and more. Grounding has now become a massive international movement — causing people to shed their shoes and reconnect electrically to the surface of the Earth. To Contact Clinton Ober go to UltimateLongevity.com Disclaimer:Medical and Health information changes constantly. I did have the remote learn their commands and they worked fine.  I found selecting activities to be a bit confusing likewise I felt switching between devices was cumbersome.  For the price that this remote costs I would expect that an activity with a TV, streamer, and receiver would automatically select the appropriate buttons on the remote.  Programming the remote is too cumbersome and non-intuitive Cable Turns 75 this Month The beginning of cable TV goes back to June of 1948 when John Walson set up an antenna on top of a mountain near the city of Mahanoy City, PA. From there he strung a cable down the mountain to a point in the city that allowed TV signals to be received by homes that connected to it. That essentially was the first cable service in the United States. Believe it or not, that “cable” company is still running today. 1948 - FCC freezes new broadcasting licenses and cable grows considerably. 1962 - FCC prevents cable companies from importing signals from far away, halting the industry in its tracks.  1972 - HBO is launched as the nation's first pay-TV network. Cable is back in business! 1976 - WTBS is launched. broadcasting from Atlanta and using satellites to become the nation's first superstation. The Atlanta Braves gain fans from all over the country. 1984 - Congress passes the Cable Communications Policy Act, loosing restrictions and appropriating funds for continued growth. Cable grew so rapidly that by 1990, there were more than 50 million subscribers across the country and at least 79 networks, an increase from just 28 at the beginning of the decade. Some of the networks that launched during this time included: Showtime Nickelodeon,  USA Network, ESPN, CNN, MTV, The Disney Channel, AMC, FX 1990 - Cable subscribers reach 50 million and there are at least 79 networks available to consumers. 1992 - Congress passes the Cable Television Consumer Protection Act that freezes prices and requires cable companies to carry local channels for free. 2000 - 2007 - The average cable subscriber has access to more than 50 channels. To fuel growth, things such as high-definition broadcasting, DVR service, on-demand programming, premium channels, interactive guides, and much more became new features and eventually standards. Cable companies begin to add high-speed internet which may have hastened the cable company's demise as a TV provider. It also may be what saves them as a viable company. 2007 - Netflix launches its streaming platform, setting the stage for the current upheaval and uncertainty in the industry.
