It was an OLLI Thursday on the program as we were joined in studio by Tori Berube, the Program Manager for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNH. The registration period for OLLI's Fall registration for courses begins on August 4. Also with us Thursday were OLLI presenters Paul Brogan of Concord and Patricia Nicolino of Portsmouth. Paul and Patricia outlined the course they will be involved with this Fall and told us about their introductions to the OLLI volunteer based educational program.

Der "Tag der Brettspielkritik" ist eine Veranstaltung, die vom Verein Spiel des Jahres e.V. organisiert wird, um sich mit dem Thema Brettspielkritik auseinanderzusetzen. Er dient dem Austausch zwischen Journalist:innen, Blogger:innen und anderen, die sich unabhängig von Verlagen und Handel mit Brettspielen beschäftigen. Dieses Jahr fand er zum vierten Mal statt und zwar in Berlin. Direkt im Anschluss daran fand dann die Verleihung zum Kinderspiel, Kennerspiel und Spiel des Jahres ebenfalls in Berlin statt. Olli war vor Ort und berichtet mit seinen beiden Gästen, Christian von Brett & Pad und Tim von den Teilzeithelden, von beiden Veranstaltungen. Viel Spaß bei der Folge und gut Brett!

Jan Slotten retired in 2019 after a 37+-year career with Farmers (Foremost) Insurance Company, where she served as a project manager, copywriter, operations manager, and more. Jan earned her Masters in Management at Aquinas while working full time.  In retirement, Jan enjoys volunteering, taking OLLI classes, travel, reading, and spending time with family and friends. Sophia Lentine is a junior at Aquinas College and is expected to graduate in December. She is majoring in English writing with a minor in studio art and hopes to start a career in communications and marketing. On campus, Sophia works for the Writing Center as a consultant/communications specialist as well as a student leader and peer mentor for TRIO SSS. She is also the vice president of the Writer's Guild and the English Honor Society. Outside of college life, Sophia enjoys reading, going skiing, and spending time with the people she loves!As part of an Aquinas College class on preparing for life after college, students were paired with mentors from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) across the street from the College. The course capstone project was a Generation Swap podcast interview exploring how generational differences can be a source of strength and growth.

Der Sommer steht vor der Tür und dennoch sind viele von uns schon in Gedanken im Herbst, wenn in Essen wieder einmal die SPIEL ihre Tore öffnen wird. In den letzten Jahren hat sich das Team hinter der SPIEL breiter und professioneller aufgestellt - und uns mit allerhand Verbesserungen und Weiterentwicklungen versorgt. Und auch dieses Jahr kennt das Team um Carol Rapp nur eine Richtung: Nach vorne! Erstmals wird dieses Jahr die Halle 7 für Aussteller geöffnet und das thematische Hallenkonzept ergänzt. Besonderes Highlight wird sicher die Bühne für die SPIEL.TALKS in Halle 4 werden und auch bei den Tickets musste und wurde angepasst. Wie so oft bei Veränderungen gibt es auch kritische Stimmen - allerdings haben einige dann doch über die Stränge geschlagen und daher wollen wir auch dieses Thema noch einmal aufgreifen. Die beiden Jungs von Alex und Olli sind ungefähr in einem Alter. In der Folge berichten die beiden was so die ersten Spiele mit den Kids waren und wie man sich dann Jahr für Jahr gesteigert hat bis zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt (beide sind jetzt fast 8 Jahre alt). My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Marj Charlier, author of the book The Candlemaker's Woman. Marj Charlier is the author of eleven novels and three novellas. The Rebel Nun (Blackstone 2021), based on the true story of a nun who led a rebellion in the sixth century, won first place in both fiction and historical fiction from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association awards in 2023. The Candlemaker's Woman was published by Sunacumen Press in 2024. She has taught memoir and fiction writing workshops at libraries, book festivals and OLLI programs, and has been a board member of several local writers' guilds, and enjoyed residencies at the Dorland Mountain Arts Colony and the Vashon Island Artist Residency. Marj began her writing career at daily and mid-size newspapers before joining the Wall Street Journal as a staff reporter in 1984. After twenty years in journalism, she began a second career in corporate finance before retiring to write novels.    In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated: “The Candlemaker's Woman takes place during the period of the barbarian migrations into the late Roman Empire. Not a period I read a lot about. My history lesson kept interfering with the memoir of a young girl sold into slavery by her mother for safe passage into Gaul. She promises to find her daughter as soon as they are able to cross the Rhine.   “As Melia waits for her mother's return, life with her new family consists of near starvation as she learns how to stretch scraps of food to avoid starvation. She even finds ways to live through the brutal sexual assaults during the nightly visits by her new master. Her only relief seems to come in learning how to make candles. She becomes an expert at the craft and uses her knowledge to her advantage when the soldiers come looking for slaves.   “Throughout the book Melia shows the character of a much older woman, learning to become strong while enduring the life of a slave. I found myself rooting for her as she ran through town searching for help in delivering her friend's baby.   “Marj's character descriptions are vivid and real. Her research is notable. Putting it down was harder than I thought. Steve, Ben, Yolanda and Olli. Ben Papapietro and his wife Yolanda join Steve Jaxon on California Wine Country. Dan Berger is away today, visiting the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival, which we talked about on this episode two weeks ago. Ben is a co-founder of the Papapietr0-Perry winery. This is Ben and Yolanda's first time on CWC. Ben Papapietro started in his basement in San Francisco as a home winemaker. He had a friend, Bruce Perry, who worked with Ben in the delivery of the San Francisco Chronicle. They wanted to make Pinot but there was hardly any fruit at that time. Another friend, Burt Williams, also helped him get some Pinot fruit. But they made a lot of Cabernet Franc blends and Zinfandel. In 1990 he got a really good source of Pinot fruit. Then his partner talked him into opening a professional winery in 1997. Early in his winemaking career, Ben did some harvests with Burt Williams, the co-founder of Williams-Selyem, who was a mentor to Ben. He was one of the local winemakers who started producing Pinot Noir in Sonoma County. California Wine Country is brought to you by Rodney Strong Vineyards and Davis Bynum Wines. Goldridge Soil Again They are tasting a 2023 Pinot Noir, a vineyard designate from Peter's Vineyard. It is in the high southern hills with the famous Goldridge soil that makes the region famous. Melissa Galliani joins us in the studio today. Her t-shirt says “near perfect” and it has a story. Ben's partner made the t-shirt that reproduces the comments of wine reviewers who liked their wine. Bruce Perry was Ben's partner and very close friend. He passed away a couple of years ago. Papapietro-Perry is participating in the Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience this weekend. But he and his wife are taking 80 people on a cruise up the Douro River in Portugal. They have organized several other cruises with as many as 140 people with them. They visit a lot of wineries and taste a lot of wine. Ben grew up in the Mission district of San Francisco and visited Italy several times to see relatives on both sides of his family. The Papapietro-Perry Light & Bright Club Papapietro-Perry has a “Light and Bright” club, which is for Rosé and Chardonnay. On June 14th there is an event called “Wine, Cheese and Chocolate.” Even during Covid they did a once-a-week live show that kept people involved. And in July there is the Papapietro-Perry Lobster and Chardonnay Festival. Next they taste a Chardonnay which is a lighter style, fruit forward with a nice spicy finish that lingers. Ben also brought a Pinot Noir, made from the 777 clone grown in four different vineyards with different growing conditions.
