Sam & Tom sit down to review their visit to Conwy Golf Club on the north coast of Wales. With a history stretching back to 1869, and Hoylake professional Jack Morris the man behind the initial design, Conwy is a breathtaking piece of land on which to play golf. We had a great time here, settling a club championship match in a four-club wind.In more recent years, Frank Pennink re-designed much of the course following the two World Wars in the first half of the 20th century. Most recently, Mackenzie & Ebert's work with the club has seen gorse removed, green sites enlarged, and bunkers returned to more naturalised shapes. For those of you who follow the trials and tribulations of our matches on the road, the ‘Club Championship' section of the website is filled with match reports as we go, along with a league table tracking our performance records. James and Christy run down all the results of an emotional final day of the N1 Victory tournament with Jack Morris becoming the first non Japanese wrestler to make the final facing up against long time NOAH Stalwart and Team 2000 X member Masa Kitamiya. In the semi main event Alpha Wolf & Dragon Bane GHC Junior Tag Champs defend against All Rebellion (Alejandro & Kai Fujimura) who have been hounding them the whole tour.
James and Christy welcome Ruth back to look at the last day of N1 Victory Block action. With Naomichi Marufuji, Jack Morris and Galeno still in contention in Block B and Kaito Kiyomiya, Masa Kitamiya and KENTA all in contetion in Block A, there is everything to play for in NOAH's Premier Heavyweight Tournament.
James and Christy are joined by Ruth and Sarah Kurchak to talk nights 5, 6 & 7 of the N1 Victory Tournament. The tournament is heading to the final night of block action on Sunday and some incredible performances start to split from the field. Down the table, Ulka Sasaki continues to impress, but top names Jack Morris, Galeno and Kitamiya are breaking through with perennial favourites Kenoh, Maraifuji and Kioyomia continue the pressure.
At 18, Jack Morris was convicted of murdering a man in South Los Angeles and sent to prison for life. It was 1979, and America was entering the era of mass incarceration, with tough sentencing laws ballooning the criminal justice system. As California's prison population surged, so did prison violence. “You learn that in order to survive, you yourself then have to become predatorial,” Morris says. “And then, you then expose somebody else to that, and it's a vicious cycle.” When California started aggressively targeting prison gangs, Morris was accused of associating with one of the groups. The punishment was severe: He was sent to a special supermax unit at the state's highest-security prison, Pelican Bay. The facility was designed to isolate men deemed the “worst of the worst.” Like Morris, most lived in near-total isolation. No phone calls, no meaningful physical contact with another human, no educational classes, no glimpses of the outside world. The only regular time out of a cell was for a shower and solo exercise in another concrete room. Decades later, prisoners at Pelican Bay, including Morris, started a dialogue through coded messages and other covert communication. They decided to protest long-term solitary confinement by organizing a hunger strike. It would become the largest in US history and helped push California to implement reforms. This week on Reveal, we team up with the PBS film The Strike to tell the inside story of a group of men who overcame bitter divisions and harsh conditions to buildan improbable prison resistance movement. This episode originally aired in March 2025. Our last AI PhD grad student feature was Shunyu Yao, who happened to focus on Language Agents for his thesis and immediately went to work on them for OpenAI. Our pick this year is Jack Morris, who bucks the “hot” trends by -not- working on agents, benchmarks, or VS Code forks, but is rather known for his work on the information theoretic understanding of LLMs, starting from embedding models and latent space representations (always close to our heart). Jack is an unusual combination of doing underrated research but somehow still being to explain them well to a mass audience, so we felt this was a good opportunity to do a different kind of episode going through the greatest hits of a high profile AI PhD, and relate them to questions from AI Engineering. There is always an excuse for not exercising, a religious prohibition, some hereditary syndrome that makes you feel desperate when you breathe hard, an allergic reaction to your own perspiration, but these can be overcome with help. My excuse is that I hated high school phy-ed with a passion, the chin-ups, the rope climb, the running somersault, the running dive over the horse, the wrestling, the ridicule and the bullying, and I despised walking naked into a shower with other young men. I still do. After I graduated, I made it a point not to join other naked men to take showers. When invited, I have declined. If this is a favorite activity of yours, I do not judge. For some men, this may be the high point of the week. Don't say this is self-loathing on my part because it isn't: it's the other men I loathe, not myself. And it's not homophobia. I have many gay male friends and they do not undress when they come to my home. I am perfectly okay taking a shower by myself or with my wife on very rare occasions such as my 70th and 80th birthdays, the Feast Day of the Assumption in August and on October 27, the day on which Jack Morris pitched the Minnesota Twins to a 1-0 victory in the 7th game of the 1991 World Series. Thursday's Minnesota Twins home opener will sound a little different this year. Longtime broadcaster Dick Bremer stepped down at the end of last season after 40 years as the TV voice of the Twins. Now in a special assistant role in the organization's front office, Bremer threw out the first pitch Thursday. Before that, he got behind an MPR News microphone to talk baseball with Minnesota Now host Cathy Wurzer. Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation. Subscribe to the Minnesota Now podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. How strange has it been to not be on the air for spring training and for the home opener?Yeah, it's been strange in all the predictable places, I felt a little bit out of sorts, I guess, or unsure what to do with my time in January when I wasn't on the Twins caravan, which is a uniquely Minnesota Twins thing for the first time in four decades. And then like everybody else in the Upper Midwest, I dealt with a snowstorm at the end of March instead of being in Fort Myers. And now here we are an opening day and that's all part of it right? When you retire you it's an adjustment for everybody, regardless of his or her walk of life. What's your current role with twins?I'm doing some special projects. I've actually been doing some writing for the Twins magazine, recording some things for the Twins radio broadcasts, making public appearances emceeing events and all that. It's an interesting role that I have with the Twins, and one that I'm very grateful for because of whenever the time was going to come, I still wanted to be connected to the team as someone who was really connected and intimately connected with the team for 40 years.Describe the dance for folks done between the play by play person and the color analyst. What's that like?Well, for the longest time, it was just one guy for 25 years. It was Bert Blyleven, it was me and Harmon Killebrew for a few years and Jim Kaat. In recent years they have rotated Justin Morneau, Torii Hunter, LaTroy Hawkins, Glen Perkins, Roy Smalley, so on and so forth. It's a bit of an adjustment, I suppose. But it really hasn't been that much of an adjustment because I've always taken the attitude that whether it was Bert Blyleven, or Paul Molitor, Jim Kaat, or, you know, whoever, that they really were the stars of the show, and I was just kind of a traffic cop and tried to draw out of them their baseball wisdom, and their baseball personality, if you will. It is no reflection at all on my abilities or lack thereof as a broadcaster, but I am the answer to a trivia question, who is the only major league announcer who's been privileged to work with five Hall of Fame players and that's meIt's been one of the great blessings of my 40 years. I won't ask your listeners to name them all. I'll try to do them all. Paul Molitor did games for a year Jack Morris, Jim Kaat, Herman Killebrew and of course Bert Blyleven, and they're all in Cooperstown.Who was the person to help you really move forward in broadcasting?Well, I don't know that any conversations were held or anything like that, but I, as you know, grew up in this area. So I was privileged to listen to Herb Carneal, Al Shaver, Ray Christensen, people like that. And when we lived in Missouri, listening to Jack Buck and Harry Caray do Cardinal games and the one thing they all had in common was they were very wearable if you will. There wasn't anything controversial about them. They did their job, night after night, year after year and as a result, they had long careers in one city, one region. And at least for me, that was always the goal to be able to say that you know what, I did a job. Hopefully I did it well, but I was able to have a long career with one team. And I guess 40 years later, you could say I guess that I succeeded.Tell us about the players you're gonna be watching for this season.Well, the team is very good. And some of their better players are very young and unfortunately, injury prone. Byron Buxton is pretty healthy and we've already been reminded how impactful he can be in a game and on a team when he's healthy. But the Twins have lost Royce Lewis for a while again, and hope to get him back. I think this Twins lineup, even though in the first five games, they struggled to score runs, they're going to be among the best offensive teams in the game. And we'll find out — that's part of the thrill of starting a new season, and we're five games into 162 games but you never really know what your team is going to look like, how they're going to play and page by page. It's like a book you, you find out exactly what you've got as the season plays along. So there's gonna be the Dick Bremer broadcast booth?I was very surprised when I found out about this weeks ago, and I've already kind of taken on the role of a landlord. I've already got a list of rules and regulations that have to be followed now in this booth. I might not reveal them all, I might just limit it to one or two. But I think that's within my right, don't you? If you're gonna name the booth after me I think I have a right to dictate what's going on in there.I'm hoping the family is there to celebrate with you.Yeah, they are. In fact, my son, Eric is a minor league broadcaster in Florida, he flew in yesterday, and my wife and daughter will be there as well. So that's what makes it really special, the fact that whatever happens here today, and you know whether I throw the ceremonial first pitch on three hops to home plate, at least we'll experience all that together. What is the great love of baseball for you? Oh, man. I was introduced to the game a long, long time ago, even before the Twins showed up here in 1961. Town team baseball is where my roots began with the game of baseball. I've been blessed to be around this Twins team in one capacity or another. I just love the game, I love the challenges. You've got individual matchups, pitcher versus batter. It's very much a team game, particularly when the team is out in the field. I just love everything about it and the game has changed, broadcasting has changed you know over the last few years as well, but there's still the beauty of the game that I enjoy and that will continue on regardless of what my role with the Twins is.

Tomorrow is SICKO TUESDAY looking for the lowest score. Play along and email the grids you're proud of to immaculatetalk@gmail.com

Jim is joined by historian and author Clayton Trutor to break down down the hall of fame candidacy of former MLB pitcher Bartolo Colón . First, Jim and Clayton discuss the many teams Colón pitched for over the course of his career and how he made an impact on all eleven ball clubs (8:12). Next, they cover Colón's pitching resurgence after hitting the age of 40, detail how he compares to HOFers Mike Mussina and Jack Morris, and run through Colón's impressive career pitching statistics (16:38). Finally, they discuss Colón's often overlooked PED suspension in 2012 (49:00), before both stating whether or not they believe Colón deserves a plaque in Cooperstown (54:42).
Tim Kurkjian's love of baseball radiates as he recounts his four decades of covering our National Pastime. The ESPN stalwart takes us to his early days as a newspaper beat reporter when terrible teams couldn't extinguish his joy. Tim recalls Don Zimmer's wisdom, Earl Weaver's unforgettable greeting, and Cal Ripken Jr.'s ferocious competitiveness even off the field.. He puts us there for a Game 7 that Jack Morris wouldn't leave, and a Game 7 when the Cubs broke a curse. We hear about Tony Gwynn's favorite bat, an odd request from Mickey Rivers, and a shared fascination for the APBA board game. There's a memorable moment with Johnny Bench sitting lakeside in Cooperstown. And, yes, that sausage mascot race . . . Yikes. Kurkjian was named the 2022 Baseball Writers' Association of America's Career Excellence Award winner (formerly the J.G. Taylor Spink award), presented annually to a writer “for meritorious contributions to baseball writing.” He was recognized at Baseball Hall of Fame ceremonies in July of '22. Tim has been a senior writer for ESPN.com and a baseball writer, analyst, host and reporter for ESPN TV since 1998. He has served as an analyst for “Monday Night Baseball” and “Wednesday Night Baseball.” Tim earned an Emmy Award in 2002 for his work on “Baseball Tonight,” and he was honored with a second Emmy for his contributions to “SportsCenter” in 2003-04. Tim was one of the first sportswriters to appear on TV as an analyst. He spent the first half of his career at newspapers and at Sports Illustrated, where he was a baseball senior writer for nine seasons (1998-97). He also worked as an on-air reporter for CNN-SI in his final two years at the magazine. His journalism career began at The Washington Star in 1978. He then worked briefly for the Baltimore News American in 1981 before joining the The Dallas Morning News to cover the Texas Rangers as a beat reporter beginning in the 1982 season. Tim moved to The Baltimore Sun in 1986 and covered the Baltimore Orioles as a beat writer through the 1989 season. Kurkjian is the author of three books: “America's Game” (2000), “Is This a Great Game or What?” (2007), and “I'm Fascinated by Sacrifice Flies” (2017). He grew up in Bethesda, Md. and attended Walter Johnson High School, named for the great Washington Senators pitcher. Tim graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in journalism in 1978. Welcome to THE Sports Law Podcast! We keep you up to date on everything at the intersection of sports and the law! In this episode, Dan Lust is joined by John Nucci (@JNucci23) to discuss breaking issues in the world of Sports Law. The Carolina Panthers hired Frank Reich as their next head coach causing the lawyers in the Brian Flores case to release a statement calling out the organization for not hiring Interim Head Coach Steve Wilks. (3:48) Wilks previously retained the lawyers handling the Brian Flores case accusing the NFL of discriminatory hiring practices. They stated, “We are shocked and disturbed that the incredible job Coach Wilks did as the interim coach, including bringing the team back into Playoff contention and garnering the support of players and fans, that he was passed over for the Head Coach position by David Tepper.“ The MLB created a Contemporary Committee made of former players and executives to select Hall of Fame members who contributed from 1980 to the present. (14:40) These players include Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, Jack Morris, Ryne Sandberg, Lee Smith, Frank Thomas and Alan Trammell. With this new committee players who have been kept at bay before are now getting votes to enter the Hall of Fame. There has been an update in the PGA v. LIV lawsuit involving the deposition of the leader of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, Yasir Al-Rumayyan. (25:24) Al-Rumayyan has argued that sovereign immunity will block the PGA from coming after him. The PGA filed a motion for leave to bring in Al-Rumayyan, the Saudi Public Investment Fund and others associated with its business. Golfer, Patrick Reed has made headlines again for threatening to file another defamation lawsuit against multiple parties as well as an interaction with Rory McIlroy caught on camera at a recent golf event. (32:21) The video shows Reed attempting to talk to McIlroy and when he is rebuffed, he walks away and flicks a tee in his direction. In a later interview, McIlroy explains that he was served papers by Reed on Christmas eve which explains his actions towards Reed. Dan and John also provide a short segment on helpful tips for new and upcoming lawyers. (38:15) These tips include being aware of legal research subscriptions and finding the right mentor. *** Have a topic you want to write about?
