On this episode of She's All Over the Place, host Katie Chonacas sits down with acclaimed filmmaker Cate Shortland, director and pioneering voice for women behind the camera, to discuss her landmark debut feature Somersault. Originally nominated for Un Certain Regard and the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Somersault follows teenage Heidi, who escapes home after a traumatic encounter and attempts to rebuild her identity in a frozen ski town. Through isolation, longing, and fragile connection, the film explores adolescence, intimacy, and the human need for belonging. We go far beyond filmmaking technique. This conversation becomes an honest exploration of creative courage, emotional exposure, and artistic voice, especially for female storytellers navigating an industry that often discourages vulnerability. Cate shares: • How Somersault was conceived and made • Working with early-career actors Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington • Why vulnerability is a strength in storytelling • Emotional truth vs. performance in film • The responsibility of female filmmakers to tell authentic stories • Finding confidence as a woman director • Creative intuition, sensitivity, and psychological depth in cinema We also discuss the film's new 4K restoration and its continued cultural relevance, over 20 years after its Cannes premiere. More than a film discussion, this episode is a masterclass on owning your voice, telling your story, and making art that feels emotionally truthful. About the Film – Somersault Following a reckless encounter with her mother's boyfriend, teenage Heidi flees home and takes refuge in a motel in the winter town of Jindabyne. She finds work at a petrol station, befriends a coworker, and begins a complicated relationship with Joe, a young man dealing with his own emotional wounds. Together they confront isolation, desire, addiction, and the search for connection. Written & Directed by: Cate Shortland Cast: Abbie Cornish, Sam Worthington, Lynette Curran Genre: Drama Runtime: 106 minutes Restored in 4K from the original 35mm negative by Piccolo Films

During demonstrations in apartheid-era South Africa, the police arrest Panic (Thomas Mogotlane), a mapantsula or petty gangster, while rounding up activists. His interrogation reveals the motivation for his involvement in the township riots. Once only concerned with partying, alcohol and his own interests, Panic finds himself being irreversibly pulled into the fray. Now, he is forced to choose between his personal freedom and taking a stand in the fight against the oppressive apartheid government. Directed by Oliver Schmitz and written by Schmitz and lead actor Thomas Mogotlane, "Mapantsula" has been hailed as the “first South African film to truly represent apartheid onscreen” (Okayafrica). Banned in its homeland and made while evading the local authorities, the film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and went on to be selected as the South African entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. Widely considered one of the most influential African motion pictures of all time, "Mapantsula" has been newly restored in 4K from the original 35MM negative. https://youtu.be/zeS9sfuuCz8?si=LMgKTLJrUktJcJaU

Among the titles discussed: Un Certain Regard prize-winner Black Dog (directed by Guan Hu), Quinzaine prize-winner The Other Way Around (Jonas Trueba), Viet and Nam (Truong Minh Quy), and a number of second features from female directors, including The Balconettes (Noémie Merlant) and All We Imagine as Light (Payal Kapadia). Goodbye Julia — which played in Cannes' section Un Certain Regard and won the Freedom Prize — is a poignant reflection on Sudanese society. The film is Kordofani's first feature. He sat down with us to discuss his journey from aviation engineer to film director and screenwriter, achieving the critical balance between "good" and "bad" while portraying humanity on screen, and how it felt to be acknowledged at the Cannes Film Festival. We asked him about his decision to set the film between 2005 and 2011 — a significant moment in Sudan's recent history — and who he made the film for: international viewers curious about Sudan or Sudanese cinema-goers reflecting on themselves. Finally, we untangle some of the main social critiques and themes that the film seeks to confront — in particular, racism between Northern and Southern Sudanese people.Mohamed Kordofani is a Sudanese film director and screenwriter. He started out as an aviation engineer, before changing careers to pursue his passion for film. His first feature film, Goodbye Julia, gained international recognition and won the Freedom Prize at Cannes Film Festival. Since then, it has also been screened internationally and was selected by the Sudanese National Committee operating in exile in the category of Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
