The Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band (JKIBB) – led by celebrated vocalist and band leader Julia Keefe of the Nez Perce tribe, is one of the only jazz big bands in the world comprised exclusively of Native and Indigenous people. Julia brings together a 16-piece ensemble to celebrate a largely unrecognized lineage of Indigenous artists in jazz, while presenting new compositions rooted in tribal histories and storytelling. This project is their premiere album titled “Incarnadine.” The album features music made famous by Indigenous jazz musicians from the Twentieth Century such as jazz singer Mildred Bailey, whose mother was a Coeur d'Alene tribal member, and Jim Pepper a saxophonist, singer and composer of Kaw and Muscogee Heritage. Also playing significantly in the development of Incarnadine is the collaboration between Julia and trumpeter Delbert Anderson of the Dine tribe who is a featured artist on this album.  In my in-depth conversation with Julia Keefe, we learn not only about the music, but about the centuries of struggle, deep beliefs, and unwavering respect of the earth that brought Julia to gift us with this truly remarkable work.

Podcast 329 - Dine Around Dunwoody Brings Food and Music to New Spots Across the City - Tim Brown Food Truck Thursdays is getting a refresh, and DHA President Tim Brown joined me to break it all down. After 15 years as a Dunwoody staple, the Dunwoody Homeowners Association decided it was time to shake things up, and what they came up with is worth getting excited about. Dine Around Dunwoody is the new series: five events from May through October, each one at a different location around the city. Think family-friendly food trucks, live music or DJs, and yes, the Chick-fil-A cow. Instead of everyone coming to Brook Run every time, the DHA is bringing the party to Spruill Center's hidden courtyard, the amphitheater at High Street, and spots a lot of Dunwoody residents have honestly never visited. And Moondog Growlers is back as the adult beverage partner, which Tim says was the most-requested community return of the year. This episode is also a great window into how much the DHA has evolved lately. New logo, new website, a growing social media presence, and a slogan that says it all: "Neighbors Connecting Neighbors." First there's been a wave of dine-and-dash incidents involving tourists in Phuket, also on the island a couple was filmed performing lewd acts on each other in an open taxi, over in Pattaya a foreign man was detained after flying off the handle over a bill dispute, on Pattaya beach a Thai delivery driver ended up in a scuffle with a foreigner after asking him not to smoke cannabis, in positive international news, Israeli's and Iranians have learned to work together! Unfortunately it was in running an illegal school in Koh Phangan, There's also some crazy traffic stories involving exploding lithium and pig fat spills, and finally one more farang couple had to be rescued from a kayaking excursion after ignoring warnings from local guides.
