David Rensin is the author of more than a dozen books, five of them New York Times bestsellers. I was lucky enough to meet David through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and he joins me here for a conversation about his long, strange trip as a journalist and author, from writing for Rolling Stone and Playboy in the 1960s and 70s to co-authoring massively popular books with Tim Allen and Jeff Foxworthy (!) in the 1990s. Rensin's 2013 book  All for a Few Perfect Waves: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki Dora is one of the most compelling visions of mid-century California I've encountered, and we talk here about Rensin's decades-long odyssey to capture Dora's significance as a surfer and cultural figure.   Check out my daily NEWS TRAP updates: https://www.patreon.com/collection/520366?view=expanded

Dirty Water: The BeachGrit Podcast featuring Chas Smith and Derek Rielly

Dirty Water #50 with David Rensin, the celebrated author of Miki Dora biography, All For a Few Perfect Waves. Rensin transcribed one million words in the pursuit of the truth, relatively speaking, of Miki Dora, surfing's great Voodoo god, for his book All For a Few Perfect Waves. Dora was style in the water, suits out of it, convertibles, Hollywood and movie stars. He was also a thief, a scammer and an impossible loner who travelled the world chasing adventure and empty waves, his only real friend a King Charles spaniel called Scooter Boy.Rensin has been a surfer since the sixties and is an author whose skills make me dizzy. Veteran journalist and collaborator David Rensin is the author or co-author of dozens of books, and a longtime contributor to Playboy, where he conducted hundreds of celebrity interviews for the magazine. As a ghostwriter, he has written numerous books in collaboration with leading show business personalities like noted film and television producer Bernie Brillstein (Where Did I Go Right?), as well as unsung heroes like former Olympian Louis Zamperini, whose World War II survival saga Devil at My Heels introduced readers to an epic tale of courage and survival that was later popularized in the film “Unbroken.” David's written a bunch of books on his own, too—including All For a Few Perfect Waves: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki Dora, which the author himself pegs as “the greatest surf story never told.” He's also written books on the legendary William Morris mailroom—and, with his friend Bill Zehme, The Bob Book, an unlikely tribute to the name Bob and to the many famous and not-so-famous men who carry it. “To me, each book is like falling in love,” David tells host Daniel Paisner, as he shares insights and anecdotes from his collaborative work with such celebrated personalities as Tim Allen (Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man), Chris Rock (Rock This!), Garry Shandling (Confessions of a Late Night Talk Show Host), Jeff Foxworthy (No Shirt, No Shoes…No Problem!). We're delighted to share this free-wheeling conversation with the masterful celebrity interviewer and story-teller David Rensin in this episode of As Told To: The Ghostwriting Podcast, in which he shares stories he's dined out on for years—and a few he's never told before. Welcome to Amy Alkon's HumanLab: The Science Between Us, a weekly show with the luminaries of behavioral science. What do men want? In bed and out? What do women want? How does this all tie together? (And who’s getting tied up?)These are just a few of the questions I’ll be asking and sex therapist Dr. Brandy Engler will be answering on tonight’s show. Dr. Engler is unique in that she opened a sex therapy practice for women -- expecting to slowly get some clients -- and quickly amassed a full list of clients: all men. Engler and New York Times best-selling biographer David Rensin have published a fascinating book about her sessions and her insights, The Men On My Couch: True Stories of Sex, Love, and Psychotherapy. This is your chance to go inside her sessions -- to see into the erotic minds of men. And not pervos or deviants, but regular guys. Men we all know.  Beyond the men, we will also see into the minds of the women having sex with these men -- or refusing to -- and find out why, and what it takes to balance love and eroticism in a relationship.Join me and all my fascinating guests every Sunday, 7-8 p.m. Pacific Time, 10-11 p.m. Eastern Time, at blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher. Please support this show -- and get some highly practical science-based advice -- by buying my "science-help" book, "Unf*ckology: A Field Guide to Living with Guts and Confidence."
