Hello Rank Squad! It's time for this week's first Champions League Takeaway - looking back at Tuesday's Quarter Final second legs, where both PSG and Barcelona emerged with qualification intact, but with their reputations bruised and having been handed on-the-night losses by Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund, who were both excellent. In the absence of Dean, who is flying back to San Diego, Jack is joined by football podcast royalty in Mike Zimmermann - to talk through both of the games and discuss the ramifications in more detail. We start with Aston Villa's impressive 3-2 win over PSG, where the Parisien favourites were given an almighty scare in the second half by Unai Emery's charges, who managed to break free of PSG's impressive counter-attacking hold after the break, going hell for leather and finding themselves some Gigi Donnarumma magic away from taking Luis Enrique's men to extra time. Then in Part Two, we head to the Westfalenstadion, where Dortmund had very little to lose, but managed to expose the Barcelona high line enough to give the Yellow Wall plenty to shout about. Serhou Guirassy's hat-trick had Barça very worried for a time, and although the Catalans progressed, they were subjected to defeat in a single game for the first time in 2025. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Podcast Intro: The Portugal Corner - Episode 177 - The Usual SuspectsWelcome to The Portugal Corner! The podcast where we dive into all things Portuguese soccer—the good, the bad, and the funny! It's St. Patrick's Day, and we're celebrating with some GuinnessIn a move that caught many by surprise, Chelsea has swooped in to secure two of Portugal's brightest young stars—Quenda and Dario Essugo. The Blues locked in deals worth €50M and €20M, respectively, on delayed loans. With Chelsea's track record of acquiring young talent, we discuss what the future holds for these rising midfielders and whether this move will help or hinder their development.Portugal's squad for the Nations League playoffs is out, and we analyze Roberto Martínez's selections. Is the midfield trio of Vitinha, João Neves, and Bruno Fernandes the right call? Will these choices propel the team to victory, or do we see cracks in the foundation?Sporting CP continues their dominant form, storming past Famalicão with a convincing 3-1 victory. The match saw Fresneda break the deadlock after a stunning run from "Thicc Vic". Famalicão kept things competitive by equalizing through a penalty just before halftime, but Sporting had the last laugh. "Thicc Vic" himself converts from the spot.Returning to domestic action, Benfica faced Rio Ave and started strong with a stunning strike from Orkun Kökçü. However, despite going 2-0 up, two sloppy defensive mistakes—one notably from Tino—allowed Rio Ave back into the match. Fortunately, Aturkoglu stepped up to restore order, securing the much-needed three points.Desperate for stability, Porto reverted to a back-four system, and it paid off with a solid 2-0 victory over AVS. Rising star Rodrigo Mora opened the scoring, bringing energy back into the squad. Fábio Vieira followed up with a thunderous one-timer to double the lead. AVS didn't help their case as Ignacio Rodriguez saw red early in the second half, giving Porto the advantage for the final 45 minutes.Guimarães' European campaign ended in disappointment as Real Betis walked into Portugal and delivered a crushing 4-0 defeat. Even Antony found himself on the scoresheet. However, the team bounced back on the weekend with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Estrela Amadora, with Thomas Handel and Arcanjo providing the goals.Bruno Fernandes continues to prove his worth, delivering a hat-trick (including two penalties) and an assist as Manchester United crushed Real Sociedad 4-1 in the Europa League. He followed it up with a goal against Leicester in a 3-0 weekend win, assisted by Dalot.Jota Silva, shinea for Nottingham Forest, scoring in a vital 4-2 victory over Ipswich. Nuno Espírito Santo's Nottingham Forest locks in third place with this crucial win.PSG survived a Champions League scare, advancing past Liverpool on penalties. Vitinha and Ramos kept their cool from the spot, while Darwin Núñez's miss proved costly. On the domestic front, Nuno Mendes scored his first Ligue 1 goal of the season in Le Classique, helping PSG secure a 3-1 win over Marseille and extend their lead at the top to a staggering 19 points. We took some heat for not nominating Mendes for last week's João Wonder—our bad!Another game, another goal for CR7. Ronaldo netted his 928th career goal as Al-Nassr defeated Al-Kholood .Toronto FC's home opener didn't go as planned, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chicago Fire. Stonk of the Week: A jaw-dropping goal from a Phoenix Rising player in the USL.João Wonder (Best Portuguese Player of the Week): Bruno Fernandes for his four-goal week, further cementing his place as one of Portugal's top midfielders. Thanks for tuning in! Hello Rank Squad! In a bit of a break from tradition, and after witnessing an absorbing encounter between Liverpool and PSG at Anfield, we decided this week might be a good one to switch things up and discuss the thing everyone will be discussing come Wednesday morning - the action from the Champions League, so this is the first of two UCL Takeaway episodes that will be with you this week. We start on Merseyside, where football reminded us it's a funny old game. Liverpool were outmatched in Paris last Wednesday, but came away with a 1-0 win against PSG; but on a night where they gave a far better account of themselves at home, they ended up losing the game 1-0 and being knocked out on penalties. Work that one out. We give PSG their due for a mighty performance over two legs, and discuss just how far this very talented side could go in this competition, as well as looking at what Liverpool might have done differently, and where the squad might need to be strengthened to push forwards again next season. Then in Part Two, we move over to the rest of the action, dissecting Barcelona's 3-1 win over Benfica where Lamine Yamal and Raphinha set some more records, as well as Pedri's astounding performance in the heart of midfield. We touch on Bayern, who Dean correctly backed in our power ranking episode, and how Leverkusen melted in the heat of the knockout stages; and finish with Inter, who made light work of Feyenoord even with a heavily rotated squad, and who are ticking along nicely in this competition. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - following the second legs of the new 'Playoff Round' in the competition, pitting the teams who finished 9th to 24th in the league stage against each other to earn places in the Round of 16.Wednesday night saw the headline tie of the round - Real Madrid vs Manchester City - settled by a Kylian Mbappe masterclass, with the Frenchman scoring a brilliant hat-trick to put the game far beyond the reach of Pep Guardiola's men and eliminate a Pep side before the Round of 16 for the first time in his managerial career. We talk how far off it City were, and how with the No 9 firing, Real Madrid might well just be favourites once again. There's also a discussion of the most entertaining game of the evening - PSV's extra-time triumph over Juventus which made the Old Lady the third (of three) Italian sides knocked out in this playoff round - two to Dutch opponents, and the other from Belgium - it's a good time to be from the Low Countries! And we talk briefly about PSG's absolute demolition job of Stade Brestois, and Borussia Dortmund's very uneventful seeing off of Sporting CP. Then in Part Two we chat through Bayern's late Davies dagger that broke Celtic hearts (it's a cruel game, sometimes), as well as Milan and Atalanta's respective headlosses as they crashed out to Feyenoord and Club Brugge respectively, as well as an incredibly fun encounter which saw Benfica emerge victorious against AS Monaco. Paris Saint-Germain's season is entering a critical phase, with big wins and key moments providing both hope and important lessons. Entering the final week of January, PSG must now prepare for a match that could define the entire season. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by long-time contributor Marc Damon and newcomer Greyson Lee to break down all the action from PSG's recent performances. We look back at the comeback win over Manchester City, the draw against Stade de Reims, and we preview the match against VfB Stuttgart. The conversation starts with PSG's thrilling 4-2 win over Manchester City. Falling behind 2-0 in the first half, PSG stormed back with four unanswered goals, showcasing their clinical finishing and renewed fighting spirit. Gonçalo Ramos, João Neves, Ousmane Dembélé, and Bradley Barcola delivered the goals to complete the comeback, leaving fans dreaming of what this team could achieve when firing on all cylinders.Next, we shift focus to the draw against Stade de Reims at the Parc des Princes. Despite moments of brilliance, including a goal from Dembélé, PSG found it difficult to break down a well-organized defense. We break down how the team's pressing game has evolved and note the challenges of maintaining intensity across a congested schedule. We also break down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's debut.Looking ahead, we preview PSG's midweek Champions League showdown against Stuttgart and make our predictions. With both teams fighting to advance, the stakes couldn't be higher. Will Luis Enrique stick with the lineup that dismantled Manchester City, or will he make changes to achieve a tactical advantage? As always, thank you for listening. We're back with a bang as we welcome Harlequins CEO Laurie Dalrymple to the show. This is one of English sport's most historic organisations. Laurie has been in charge of the Premiership Rugby team for over 5 years, establishing them as one of the leading commercial entities in the game while delivering huge success including league titles and European Cup semi-finals on the pitch. We've had some incredible rugby chats on the show in the past. This is no different. From the viability of teams as sustainable businesses to the development of more players as ‘sporting icons', Laurie gave us a compelling review of what it means to run a historic sporting organisation fighting to remain at the forefront of sporting entertainment. But can one club achieve real success if the league isn't set up to facilitate it? Our age old ‘rising tide lifts all boats' discussion. We also recorded this a few hours after the club announced a bumper new deal for Marcus Smith; couldn't have timed that better. Before joining Quins Laurie was previously Managing Director of Wolves, overseeing the signings of Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, and Nottingham Forest's high flying manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Rugby fans, football fans, there's something in here for everyone. Importance of Talent Top talent on your roster is essential to building a better commercial vehicle that brands want to interact with. From Marcus Smith to Alex Dombrandt, how have Harlequins looked to enhance the profile of their star players to build value into the club. Is rugby capable of delivering global superstars? When the sport is all about the importance of the team, is there a place for ‘superstar' personalities? Is there concern that the salary cap and spending restrictions placed on English clubs causes the top talent to move abroad or not come to the Premiership in the first place? The importance of legacy and ensuring the players appreciate what has gone before them at this historic club. Financial Management Is Laurie a supporter of the salary cap model and why was it introduced in the first place? Can the financial challenges experienced by clubs in recent years be purely attributed to spend on the pitch or are there other factors at play? How does the salary cap work? What are the budgets and how can they be spent? How have Harlequins built the most valuable club in England with the highest revenues? From enhancing fan experience to trusted brand partners. What are the financials of the club? Despite performing very well in the existing environment they are still not profitable. Rugby vs Football What did Laurie bring into rugby from his time as Managing Director at Wolves? Where were there direct crossovers and what was the biggest difference? What is a better investment? Buying a rugby club or buying a football club? What are the differences between owners in rugby and football? How does the business model change? Should football have a salary cap? The Portugal Corner Podcast: Episode Recap – "Lions Roar, Benfica Surges, and Porto's Stumble" In this week's action-packed episode of The Portugal Corner Podcast, the crew dives deep into an exciting round of fixtures across Portugal and Europe, with standout performances and shocking results. Sporting's Dominance & UCL Preview: The Lions, under new management, put on an electrifying display as they dismantle Amarante 6-0 in the Portuguese Cup. A brace from Edwards, a goal each from Harder, Gyokeres, and Trincão, and even Esgaio getting on the scoresheet – it's clear that Sporting is clicking under the new regime. With a midweek Champions League clash against Arsenal looming, the big question is: can they carry this momentum forward? Predictions are flying as the squad looks set to test themselves on the European stage. Benfica's Ruthless Form: Benfica responds to Sporting's dominant win by upping the ante with a jaw-dropping 7-0 thrashing of Estrela Amadora. The star of the show? Ángel Di María, who bagged a hat-trick in just 17 minutes, effectively sealing the game early. There were also goals from Aktürkoglu, Amdouni, and a brace from the ever-dangerous Cabral. They'll now turn their focus to a crucial Champions League match against Monaco, as their title charge gathers steam. Porto's Disappointment: Porto, despite unveiling a flashy new kit, couldn't match the hype and suffered a 2-1 loss to Moreirense. Pepe gave them an early lead with a header, but things took a turn when the home side leveled the score with another header and then took the lead through a controversial penalty. The game ended in disappointment for Porto, and things took an ugly turn as "fans" waited outside Estádio Dragão to assault the team bus on its return. Wolves and Spurs Dominate the Premier League: In England, Wolves enjoyed a massive 4-1 win over Fulham, with a late goal from Gonçalo Guedes and Raul Jiménez getting serenaded by the fans. The Brazilian brigade of Cunha, Guedes, and João Gomes are stepping up to lead Wolves away from relegation. Meanwhile, Spurs pulled off a stunning 4-0 victory over Manchester City, leaving Pep Guardiola with a five-game losing streak. Liverpool & Salah's Continued Brilliance: Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to Southampton, but as long as Mohamed Salah is around, it seems like the Reds can never be counted out. Despite Matheus Fernandes scoring for Southampton, Salah's two goals sealed the win and reminded everyone why he's one of the best in the world. Amorim Fails to win on his Manchester United debut. PSG Elsewhere, Portuguese influence continues to show, with midfield duo of João Neves and Vitinha both scoring in PSG's comfortable 3-0 victory over Toulouse. The pair are starting to form a powerhouse combination in Paris, which could be a game-changer this season. New Clothing Partnership & More: The episode also features the announcement of a fresh clothing partnership, with a photoshoot at the iconic Alvalade Stadium, complete with a couch and a motorcycle – talk about a statement! Hello Rank Squad! The window is shut, there's been a few games to see how teams look, and it's time to finalise our long-term predictions for this season, which can only mean one thing here on Ranks - it's time for 5x5! And, as has become tradition for this episode, the Rank God Sam Tighe is back in the building to share the microphone with Dean and Jack. The concept is simple - we each pick how we think the top five in England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain are going to look when the curtain falls in May.First, we take a look at what happened last time out, before working through our selections, our thoughts on how a shedload of sides have started their campaigns, and some more questionable bold calls from Jack, hot off his successful Leverkusen shout last year. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
