This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comDavid Marchese has spent the past decade interviewing famous people, from Quincy Jones to Nicolas Cage. He is co-host of “The Interview,” the New York Times Q&A series, and before that, he interviewed bold-faced names for Vulture and NYT Magazine. But he doesn't see his job as “interviewing celebrities” — at least, that's what he says after his old pal Sarah introduces him as such. It's true that Marchese interviews all sorts of people, from author Michael Pollan to happiness expert Laurie Santos. But fame — and its excesses, contradictions, and illusions — is the backdrop for many of his best-known conversations, and it's the launchpad here for a chat about collective experiences, how to ask better questions, how journalism has changed since the days of Playboy, and why discomfort might be a key ingredient to a great interview. NOTE: This is an audio-only episode! Also discussed …As well as:* Sarah sees an advantage to David being “deeply Canadian” * “Celebrity is the coin of the realm.” Or is it?* Nicolas Cage … inspired by Gumby?* Jim Jarmusch did not do interviews that lasted less than an hour* Editor burnout is real* Adam Moss, genius* Friend o' the pod David Rensin and his dozens of Playboy interviews* Age is an undervalued asset in celebrity interviews* Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, Edward Norton, Anthony Hopkins* Interviewing as surgery and when to put down the knife* Sarah is still waiting on that mixed tape David promised in 2008Plus: David quotes Ezra Pound, Joyce Carol Oates and Elmore Leonard, what Clive James got right about Americans and fame, and much more! After the paywall: “Which celebrity interview was the most uncomfortable?”We're trying to ask better questions. Welcome back to Feel-Good Fridays. This week, host Aislyn Greene and producer Nikki Galteland are joined by Afar executive editor Kathrine LaGrave—and the three of them are ready to carry you into the weekend a little lighter, with stories about line dancing, travel with your dog, and the surprisingly simple science of being happy. The happy news Country line dancing is having a queer renaissance. Kathrine shares the story of Stud Country, a New York–based group offering country dancing parties and classes rooted in queer cowboy culture—open to everyone, from regulars to curious first-timers. It's getting a whole lot easier to travel with your dog. Nikki reports that searches for pet-friendly travel are up year-over-year, and a new wave of hotels isn't just tolerating four-legged guests—they're actively celebrating them, with welcome treats, room amenities, dog spas, and yes, an official Director of Pet Relations. Aislyn brings us back to Yale happiness researcher Laurie Santos, who went viral for teaching the most popular course in the university's history—and whose 2026 take on happiness comes down to one thing: more friction, more connection, less optimization. Travel, she argues, is one of the best tools we still have for getting out of our own way. Plus: a spirited debate about cowboy boot colors, a Yappy Hour proposal, and a vision for the ultimate Feel-Good Friday field trip—all dogs welcome. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to step away from your phone… even when your  mind and body is asking for a break? The texts, notifications, social media scrolling, and constant pressure to respond to that email can leave you  feeling wired, distracted, and disconnected from yourself. Your mind may say, “Just one more thing,” while your body is quietly tightening, bracing, or whispering that it needs space. And if you've been pushing through for years — caring for everyone else, managing work, family, caregiving, and the invisible weight of modern life — you are not broken. Your body may simply be responding to a world that rarely rewards you how to pause. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Mary Donohue, founder and CEO of the Digital Wellness Center, whose work blends neuroscience, behavior, and technology. After living with chronic leukemia, caregiving stress, and surviving a heart attack, Mary began looking more closely at digital wellness and how constant connection affects the brain, body, and our ability to pause.Together, we talk about digital overload, micro breaks, nervous system regulation, social media anxiety, and stress-related illness. Mary shares why even a small pause can help your body settle and give you more space before you respond. In this episode, you'll learn:Why midlife women may be especially vulnerable to chronic stress How women over 50 can begin noticing the subtle body cues they've learned to overrideWhat micro breaks can offer when your mind and body feel overstimulatedHow social media anxiety can quietly shape your mood, focus, and sense of calmHow a simple 3 minute micro break can help you regulate you emotional well-being.The connection between technology and mental health in our everyday choicesHow your nervous system staying in a low-grade activation (fight or flight response) can show up without you even knowing it. IWhy giving back, connecting with others, and creating more joy can help you feel more groundedHow technology can become part of the solution when it is designed with human well-being in mindThis conversation is a gentle reminder that the pace of your life may be asking more of your body than it was ever meant to hold. You don't have to wait until you're exhausted, anxious, or completely overwhelmed to give yourself a pause. Sometimes one small moment of space is enough to help you start hearing what your body and brain have been trying to tell you all along. With love and freedom, LaurieClick here to purchase my “Nervous System Regulation Starter Kit” it's $29.99Click here to purchase my book: Sandwiched: A Memoir of Holding On and Letting GoClick here to watch the Barbie clip referenced in this podcastFree ResourcesClick here to schedule a FREE inquiry call with me.Click here for my FREE “Beginner's Guide to Somatic Healing”Click here for my FREE Core Values ExerciseWebsiteConnect with Dr. Mary Donohue: Victoria on LinkedIn: Dr. Mary DonohueVictoria's email: drmaryedonahue@gmail.com RESOURCES MENTIONED:Digital Wellness Center: Founded by Dr. Mary Donohue, this science-backed platform helps people manage digital stress, take healthier microbreaks, and build more balanced technology habits. Message Received: A book written by Dr. Mary E. Modern loneliness is often treated as a simple problem: People are simply spending more time alone. But what if that's not the whole story? Over the last several years, Derek has written about workism, the rise of a culture that puts work at the center of our lives, and the "antisocial century," in which technology has made it easier than ever to avoid spending time with other people. The result is a world where many of us trade deep connection for convenience, productivity, and fleeting hits of entertainment. Today, Derek talks with Yale psychology professor and Happiness Lab host Laurie Santos about the science of friendship, connection, and loneliness. What do we misunderstand about being alone? Why are male friendships harder to maintain? And how can we build stronger relationships in a world that seems designed to pull us apart? Have you noticed how the more we're connected by the internet and have all these gadgets, the lonelier we get? The things we thought would bring us together are actually making us more isolated than ever. That is the conversation I had with Dr. Laurie Santos. She is a Yale professor, an expert on happiness, and the woman behind Psychology and the Good Life, the most popular class Yale has ever offered. She also hosts her own hit podcast, The Happiness Lab, focused on the science of feeling good.  In this episode, Dr. Laurie breaks down why English-speaking countries are quietly getting unhappier, why manifesting the reward actually makes you less likely to chase it, and why the expert on gratitude herself doesn't love gratitude journaling. She explains the neuroscience of wanting versus liking, why self-care has quietly become self-indulgence, and the mindset shifts that matter more than any routine, supplement, or practice on the internet. She also gets into why doomscrolling is stealing more from you than your time, the two parts of happiness you actually need both of, and the simple habits the research supports when every trendy protocol around you does not. If you have been doing everything you are supposed to do and still feel off, this episode might confirm something you've known about yourself and your happiness for a long time.  What's Discussed: (01:30) How Dr. Laurie ended up at Yale teaching the most popular class in the school's history. (04:15) Why happiness is a skill you practice, not a personality trait you are born with. (07:40) The two kinds of happiness most people confuse and why you need both. (11:05) Why money past a certain number stops making you any happier. (14:30) The science behind why paraplegics and lottery winners end up at the same happiness baseline. (18:20) Why comparison is the single biggest thief of happiness in modern life. (22:10) Why the silver medalist looks more miserable than the bronze medalist. (26:45) Why non-English speakers are happier according to studies. (31:20) The dopamine trap of social media and why you crave what you don't even like. (35:50) Why your phone is the Nutrasweet of real connection. (40:15) Why boredom is the skill modern kids are losing and why it matters. (44:30) The shock study that reveals how uncomfortable we have become with our own thoughts. (49:10) Why the gratitude expert herself doesn't vibe with gratitude journaling. (52:40) Dr. Laurie's alternative to gratitude that actually sticks. (57:05) Why self-compassion beats self-criticism for every single goal you have. (1:01:30) Why self-care is not a bubble bath and what it actually looks like. (1:06:15) The research that shows manifestation is making you less likely to get what you want. (1:10:40) The WOOP framework and why it is the version of manifesting that actually works. (1:15:20) Why work-life balance is the wrong goal and what to aim for instead. (1:19:45) What Dr. Laurie tells her students to do in just ten minutes a day to feel happier. Why do we keep chasing happiness in ways that don't actually work?Dr. Laurie Santos is a cognitive scientist and professor of psychology at Yale, where she created the most popular course in the university's 300-year history, the Science of Well-Being. Since then, that course has reached millions of people around the world, and her podcast, The Happiness Lab, has become one of the most trusted resources on the science of living well. In this conversation with Dr. Michael Gervais, Laurie pulls back the curtain on why our minds so reliably get happiness wrong, and what we can do about it.The conversation starts with a sobering look at the student mental health crisis: more than 40% of college students report being too depressed to function, more than 60% report overwhelming anxiety. Laurie saw it firsthand at Yale, and it launched her on a mission to translate happiness research into practical tools that actually work. She explains why the things we predict will make us happy – more money, more success, more achievement – don't deliver the boost we expect, or the lasting satisfaction we hope for. She digs into the science of social comparison, why our brains default to the comparisons that make us feel worse, and why even the most high-performing people can feel inexplicably stuck. And she outlines the evidence-based habits, social connection, mindset shifts, emotional awareness, that actually move the needle. In this conversation, we explore:Why our minds are wired to predict happiness incorrectlyHow social comparison shapes our experience of achievement, and rarely in our favorWhat the research actually says about money, status, and wellbeingWhy social connection is the most underrated predictor of happinessHow to work with your emotions rather than suppress or spiral into themWhat leaders and organizations can do to build genuinely happier, higher-performing teamsEveryone wants to live a good life. Why does happiness sometimes feel out of reach even when you think you are doing everything right? You take steps forward, check the boxes, show up for the people you love, but underneath it all, something still feels unsettled. Life can start to feel rushed, full, or emotionally heavy, yet you can't quite put your finger on it.This is what happens when you're not prioritizing the foundational keys to happiness and, in turn, living with a dysregulated nervous system. When your body stays in a constant threat response—do more, earn more, and achieve more is when your nervous system becomes overwhelmed. Sleep becomes harder, and when you do wake up, you feel exhausted. In this solo episode of Confessions of a Freebird, I reflect on the work of Dr. Laurie Santos, Yale professor, host of The Happiness Lab, and one of the leading voices in positive psychology. Her research offers a grounded look at how to feel happier, and I add a somatic lens to the conversation, because happiness is not only a mindset issue–it happens when you have a regulated nervous system. In this episode, you'll learn:Why chasing success before happiness has it backwards — and what the science actually showsThe Somatic Experiencing perspective on each principle and why the body is the missing piece of the happiness conversationWhy your nervous system state and learning nervous system regulation matter more than your mindsetHow self-compassion and emotional agility help feelings move through you with less shame and fearThe 10 principles Dr. Santo says genuinely move the needle on human happiness, which include more human connection and social connection. What prosocial behavior does to your mood, and why the helper high matters more than you might thinkHow to implement each principle with specific, research-backed practices. This episode is for you if you've ever felt like you were doing everything right and still not feeling the way you thought you would. In this episode, Dr. Diana Hill talks with Yale psychology professor and The Happiness Lab host Dr. Laurie Santos about the biggest mind traps that block joy—and the small, research-backed shifts that help you feel better in real life. Together, Diana and Laurie unpack why mind-wandering, hedonic adaptation (getting used to the good), and comparison quietly drain wellbeing—and how practices like mindfulness/savoring, treating negative emotions as helpful signals, radical acceptance, and “time affluence” can bring you back to what matters most.Key takeaways you'll learn in this episode:The three biggest “happiness traps” (mind-wandering, adaptation, and comparison) and how to work with them. Why chasing “good vibes only” can backfire—and how to redefine happiness as flourishing. How to use negative emotions as signals (like a dashboard light) instead of problems to eliminate. Why more money and achievement often don't move happiness much—and what tends to help more (sleep, friends, free time, and presence).Press play, then share this episode with a high-achiever friend (or anyone feeling stuck in the comparison spiral) who could use a science-backed reset on what actually creates joy.Related ResourcesGet enhanced show notes for this episodeOrder my book, Wise Effort: How to Focus Your Genius Energy on What Matters Most, and receive special bonus gifts.Want to become more psychologically flexible? From world-renowned researchers to survivors, artists, and healers, each voice reinforces the same message: habits are the infrastructure of a super life.     What You'll Learn Why chasing "quantum leaps" keeps people stuck How small, boring steps outperform dramatic change The science behind habit formation and behavior loops Why willpower fails and what works instead How environment shapes behavior before conscious choice Why micro-movements can save a life How trauma healing requires baby steps, not overwhelm The role of breathwork in rewiring the nervous system How repetition builds new neural pathways Why discipline creates freedom, not restriction How to reprogram negative self-talk into an inner ally Why curiosity beats judgment in long-term growth How mindset can be gamified to support progress The "good, better, best" framework for sustainable habits Why consistency matters more than recognition     Chapters 00:00:03 – Welcome to SuperLife and the philosophy of sovereignty 00:00:33 – Sponsor: Manna Vitality and frequency-enhanced wellness 00:02:03 – Why the obsession with overnight success is a trap 00:02:45 – The pattern Darin noticed across hundreds of guests 00:03:03 – Introducing the ultimate habits compilation 00:04:41 – Dr. Laurie Santos on the "arrival fallacy" and why circumstances don't create happiness 00:09:35 – Darin Olien (Solo): Why willpower is the wrong engine & designing your environment 00:13:54 – Chloe Temtchine: Rebuilding life from death's door through micro-movements 00:18:16 – Sponsor: Shakeology and foundational nutrition 00:21:52 – Dr. Aimie Apigian: Why trauma healing requires "baby steps" for the nervous system 00:27:35 – Darin Olien (Solo): Discipline as a container for freedom & the "One Thing" strategy 00:32:55 – Robyn O'Brien: The year-long discipline of rewiring your inner voice 00:41:07 – Sponsor: SuperLife Patreon community 00:42:39 – Juergen 'Jules' Horn: The math of breathwork (7.5 hours to rewire the nervous system) 00:44:57 – RedFoo: Gamifying your mindset with the "plus one" equation 00:48:41 – Alysa Conger: Intuition is a muscle built through reps (just like pushups) 00:50:23 – Darin Olien (Solo): The "Good, Better, Best" framework for reducing toxins 00:55:16 – Sheila Morovati: How asking one simple question can spark a global movement 00:56:47 – Jeff Turner: Relentless consistency and showing up when no one is watching 01:05:12 – Dr. Aly Cohen: The "4 A's" Framework (Assess, Avoid, Add, Allow) for non-toxic living 01:17:55 – Jennifer Cohen: The "Spit and Catch" story & why boredom breeds resourcefulness 01:32:04 – Johnny Graham: Overcoming fear of the future by asking "What am I doing right now?" 01:34:07 – Conclusion: We are not victims—you have agency over your biology and destiny 01:35:24 – Upcoming projects: Roadmap to Happiness & closing thoughts     Thank You to Our Sponsors Shakeology: Get 15% off with code SUPERLIFE at Shakeology.com. As we close out the year, this special Holiday episode of the SuperLife Podcast weaves together the most powerful moments, conversations, and awakenings from an extraordinary season of inquiry. From environmental toxins and metabolic health to resilience, trauma, consciousness, and human potential, this episode is a reminder that living a SuperLife isn't about perfection — it's about awareness, sovereignty, and choosing differently. This year challenged assumptions, exposed broken systems, and offered real tools for healing — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This episode is both a reflection and a recalibration: a moment to pause, integrate, and step forward with clarity into what's next.     What You'll Learn 00:00 – Welcome to SuperLife + why this Holiday Special matter 02:10 - Year-end reflection: the conversations that cracked us open 07:26 - Dr. Aly Cohen on how her golden retriever's autoimmune illness revealed the unregulated chemical soup in our daily products. 10:57 - Dr. Laurie Santos on the arrival fallacy of happiness and why our brains are wired to get used to the good life. 16:03 - Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson on how a study on Navy dolphins led to the accidental discovery of C15, a fatty acid that may slow aging. 20:55 - Jennifer Cohen on how a simple "spit and catch" game taught her that boredom forces kids to build resiliency. 24:05 - Ian Clark on the moment he refused a terminal prognosis and committed to finding a different way to heal. 29:59 - Jim Poole on inventing NuCalm, a technology using physics and math to bypass trauma responses and restore the brain. 35:32 - Dr. Richard J. I've had “Timekeeper” by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals stuck in my head, and it sent me down a rabbit hole about how we experience time - psychologically, somatically, and through tarot. In this episode of The Tarot Diagnosis, I explore why time isn't a single, objective thing we all live the same way. Instead, our nervous systems, mental health, creativity, grief, and even neurodivergence shape how fast or slow life feels. Plus, tarot gives us language and imagery to work with that reality. I explore how time is deeply subjective and shaped by the nervous system, noting how ADHD, anxiety, trauma, grief, and even creative flow can dramatically alter our felt sense of time. I also look at how capitalism, calendars, and the constant pressure toward productivity hijack our internal rhythms and distort our perception of urgency.  Through a tarot lens, I consider how the cards function as mirrors for our temporal experience: the Wheel of Fortune becomes a symbolic clock that reflects cycles, seasons, turning points, and the timelines we fear we've “missed” or been redirected from; The Hanged Man teaches us the value of a purposeful pause, choosing suspension to gain clarity; Death and the Six of Cups speak to endings, nostalgia, and the bittersweet grief of what we cannot return to; and Judgment paired with the Eight of Pentacles invites us to ask, “Whose timeline am I serving?” - guiding us toward value-aligned efforts and a more conscious relationship with time. Resources & goodies I mentionGrace Potter & The Nocturnals - “Timekeeper” listen here.Time affluence vs. time famine.

What really makes us happy? In this episode, we draw from Yale professor Dr. Laurie Santos' research — featured on the Rich Roll Podcast — to uncover four surprising truths about happiness: the arrival fallacy, the bronze medal effect, how comfort can backfire, and why giving beats self-focus. What's remarkable is how these modern insights echo wisdom preserved in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. The yogic texts long ago revealed that happiness and distress both come to us inevitably, and that wise souls redirect their energy toward devotion. In bhakti, this opens the door to a transcendental joy far beyond worldly ups and downs — most beautifully seen in the eternal love between Krishna and the residents of Vrindavan. This week, McKay introduces a practical and powerful challenge: the one-month happiness test. Drawing inspiration from Laurie Santos's famous Yale course, "Psychology and the Good Life," this episode moves beyond big, life-altering events to focus on the small, consistent actions that are scientifically proven to boost happiness. McKay breaks down simple yet profound practices like savoring positive moments, actively choosing your focus through selective attention, expressing gratitude, performing acts of kindness, and strengthening social connections. Through relatable stories and real-world examples, he illustrates how these "micro-adjustments" can retrain our brains, counteracting our natural negativity bias and leading to a more joyful, fulfilling life. Listeners are invited to take the test for themselves and discover how intentional, daily habits can create lasting change.Main Themes:Happiness comes from small, consistent changes, not just big life events. You can retrain your brain to focus on the positive through selective attention.Savoring positive experiences - before, during, and after - deepens their impact.Practicing gratitude is a powerful choice that turns what you have into enough.Acts of kindness boost happiness for both the giver and the receiver.Strong social connections are a primary predictor of a long, happy life.Exercise and sleep are foundational pillars for mental well-being and happiness. You can become the author of your life by choosing what to focus on and practice. What you notice becomes your reality.A one-month test is long enough to implement new habits and see real results.Top 10 Quotes:"The strange truth is... most people return to their baseline level of happiness after these major life events. This phenomenon is called the hedonic treadmill.""Tiny, regular changes to your daily life often make a bigger, longer-lasting difference than these big things.""Your brain is built to scan for problems... but you can change what you focus on, and it will help you be more happy.""Savoring is the deliberate, post-activity act of looking back on what you've done and taking time to appreciate it.""Gratitude turns what we have into enough.""Close relationships, more than money or fame, are what kept people happy throughout their lives.""These examples aren't miracles; they're micro-adjustments in their lives.""You get to choose what you'll focus on. So this month, to test your happiness, focus on the good.""Kind service has this magic feel to it."Show Links:Open Your Eyes with McKay Christensen
