Today's show is for people interested in the current election but sick of the usual political noise. The guests are two highly experienced political analysts, Dan Schnur and Richard Zeiger, who will teach an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute class at the University of California Davis this fall called “An Election Like No Other.” On Davisville today we talk about why this presidential election is both different and traditional, why many elected offices are uncontested, cynicism as a turnoff and as a way to cope, and young Americans who opt to get involved in their community outside of politics. "Volunteering is noble," Schnur says, "but you can only clean up so many parks. Participating by voting or running for office or getting involved in other ways is equally important." “One of the most important lessons about politics … It leads to a democracy [and] you have to be willing to lose,” says Zeiger, who lives in Davis. "That's what the whole business is about, somebody's going to win and somebody's going to lose. And when you lose, you pull your pants back on and you go back into the fray.” In the class, Schnur says, “we come at this as analysts, not advocates … and so the way that we believe to keep these conversations productive, is not simply for people to scream and yell at each other and talk about who's right and who's wrong, but rather to analyze why the candidates are doing and saying the things that they're saying and doing, and trying to make broader sense of it."

Episode 349 - Kerry Kriseman - Accidental First Lady - On the Front Lines (and Behind the Scenes) of Local PoliticsHello, and thank you for visiting. I'm a St. Petersburg native, and a graduate of University of South Florida (Go Bulls!) with a B.A. in Mass Communications/Broadcasting. I'm also a former political spouse. After years of being asked, “How do you do this?” I decided to tell my story of political spouse life with Accidental First Lady: On the Front Lines (and Behind the Scenes) of Local Politics.Since publishing my book, I've had the honor of helping others start their author journeys. I've taught memoir writing with Keep St. Pete Lit, and next year, I'll teach a 4-part memoir class at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Eckerd College. To reach aspiring writers everywhere, I'm designing an online class: Memoir Magic: Crafting, Publishing, and Promoting Your Life Story. I'd love to add you to my Founders Group of students.  About the authorKerry Kriseman is a St. Petersburg native. She is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a B.A. in Mass Communications/Broadcasting. Kerry worked in print media for the St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times) in various positions in the Newsroom and Marketing Department from 1988 to 1998. She has been the Public Relations Manager for Creative Clay, a St. Petersburg, Fla., non-profit since 2008.Kerry is the author of Accidental First Lady: On the Front Lines and Behind the Scenes of Local Politics, published by St. Petersburg Press. The memoir recounts her 22 years as a political spouse to her lawyer-turned-politician husband, Rick Kriseman, St. Petersburg Mayor from 2014-2022. Political life afforded Kerry remarkable travel experiences, such as travel to Morocco, Scotland, and Qatar. However, she also finds her hometown of St. Pete engaging, with its world-class museums, local arts districts, diversity, and vibrant neighborhoods. Equally as enjoyable as travel are Kerry's passions: dogs (her own Labradors and the guide dog puppies they raise), volunteering in several capacities, enjoying wine, trying new recipes, and challenging her baking skills with her new Kitchen Aid stand mixer. https://www.kerrykriseman.com/Finally a podcast app just for kids! GUEST: Anastasia Edel - writer and social historian. ---------- Until February 2022, the war in Ukraine could be dismissed by some as a “quarrel in a faraway country, between people of whom we know nothing”, especially if they had been influenced by aggressive Russian propaganda and the techniques of hybrid information warfare. But in 2022 the war became full scale, and the propagandistic subterfuge far less effective. The West had believed that mutually beneficial commercial activity created a guarantee against a full-scale war in Europe, that would see hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded; that a Russian elite with financial, property and commercial interests in Europe would not risk it all for an imperial adventure or fall in behind the desperate acts of a genocidal autocrat. But once again, we entirely failed to predict or understand Russia's actions. The trauma and misfortune Russia has wrought on its peaceful, democratic neighbour is reminiscent of WWII - but will the leaders that unleashed this barbarism go the same way as the Nazi elite in 1945? ---------- SPEAKER: Anastasia Edel is a Russian-born American writer and social historian. She is the author of Russia: Putin's Playground, a concise guide to Russian history, politics, and culture. Her writing has appeared in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Project Syndicate, Quartz, and World Literature Today. She teaches history at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at University of California, Berkeley. ---------- LINKS: Twitter: @AEdelWriter Staring Down the Black Hole of Russia's Future https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/03/10/russia-ukraine-putin-war-future/ ----------

What Do We Know About the Moon? July 20, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of humanity's first steps on the surface of the moon. In that time, the Apollo missions, a fleet of robotic probes and observations from Earth have taught us a lot about Earth's surprising satellite. In this nontechnical talk, Andrew Fraknoi, who is sometimes called the Bay Area's public astronomer, will look at the past, present and future of the moon, including its violent origins, the mystery of the frozen water we have found at its poles and its long-term future as it moves farther and farther away from us. Illustrated with beautiful images taken from orbit and on the surface, his talk will make the moon come alive as an eerie world next door, as a changing object in our skies, and as a possible future destination for humanity and its ambitions. Come find out how the achievements of the Apollo program fit into the bigger picture of our involvement with our only natural satellite. Fraknoi recently retired as the chair of the astronomy department at Foothill College and now teaches noncredit astronomy courses for seniors at the Fromm Institute at the University of San Francisco and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Francisco State. He also served as the executive director of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific for 14 years and was named the California professor of the year in 2007. Fraknoi appears regularly on local and national radio, explaining astronomical developments in everyday language. The International Astronomical Union has named Asteroid 4859 after Fraknoi in honor of his contributions to the public understanding of science. Learn more about your ad choices.
