Sam Tallent is kind of a big deal — the Denver metro-raised comedian has been touring the stand-up circuit for years, honing his act and making a name for himself outside Colorado. He's also recorded his own comedy special, made appearances on WTF with Marc Maron and Bert Kreisher's Bertcast, and even found time to write Running the Light, a book fellow comedians have praised as the best depiction of the life of a stand-up on the road. Tomorrow night, Sam headlines a sold-out show at Comedy Works, his old stomping grounds. But first, he chats with host Bree Davies about the Denver DIY scene he cut his comedic teeth in, and why this is such a unique city for great comedy to thrive. Find Sam TaIlent on Instagram and Twitter, and check out Chubby Behemoth, his podcast with fellow comedian Nathan Lund. Venues we discussed: Denver Comedy Underground, Comedy Works, and The Squire Lounge. R.I.P.: Old Curtis Street, Rhinoceropolis, Mouth House, Rockaway, and Deer Pile. In the third episode of the series, we take a tour through an important aspect of ABQ comedy history. In the face of all the obstacles hindering the establishment of a brick-and-mortar comedy club, many performers/producers have turned to letting strangers in their own houses over seeking commercial or public spots. How can these choices inform who next comes in with big ideas? Is a DIY aesthetic needed for the next phase in growth? The episode features interviews with Brett Hiker, Genevieve Mueller, Greg Ziomek, and William Wheeler. Special mentions for The Deer Pile in Denver, Comedian Power Hour, Tyler Lovely, and Jared Ostrom.
Your next storyteller is Greg Salvesen. With an anniversary coming up soon, we're feeling a little nostalgic—so today we're sharing this story from all the way back in 2013. He shared this story in front of a live audience at the Deer Pile in Denver, Colorado; the theme of the show was “The Fall.” Special thanks to Beau Beverage for today's outro music. The theme of our live show in June 2013 was "Insults & Grievances." Folks packed into the Deer Pile—that tiny, gorgeous, sweltering box—listened to their peers tell tales of live beating them down. The story I remember the most vividly from that night came from Greg Salvesen, an economist who loves to run long distances. Back then, Greg recounted his greatest loss, and the damage that it did to him. I'm sharing that story with you today because it's a good prequel to Greg's next story, which he told on July 15, 2015. In the spring of 2015, Greg competed in the granddaddy of all long jogs—the Infinitus, a rugged 888km footrace in the wilds of Vermont. That's right, 888km, over 550 miles in a figure-eight loop. Against all odds, Greg won! Greg shared his new story, along with six other stories on the theme "Take a Hike" on the July 2015 Narrators show. Bonus: Here's the 46-second promotional video for the Infinitus, which is easily the weirdest, most unsettling video for a running race that I've ever seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MhunzpnIYg This story was originally recorded on 18 June 2013 at the Deer Pile in Denver, Colorado and the theme of the evening was "Arguments & Grievances." Back in April 2013, The Narrators asked Denver Diatribe to take over for one night. The theme of the evening was "Colfax Avenue," a tribute to Denver's most infamous street. This week's story comes from Jared Maher, one of Denver Diatribe's co-hosts. Jared is a former investigative journalist and staff writer for Westword. In the past decade he has worked for a variety of media outlets, including Face the State and Free Speech TV. These days, he's a producer and director at Craftsy.com. This story was originally recorded on 18 April 2013 at the Deer Pile in Denver, Colorado. Our theme music is by our friend Whalehawk (aka the Grammy-nominated musician Jake Sanders) and thanks to Josh Johnson for engineering help on this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. On this weeks episode of Empty Girlfriend we have the comedian with the biggest heart in Denver (figuratively and literally) Sam Tallent. Sam let's us in on some inexpensive date secrets, and how to love big and fearlessly. Not like Buchs. You can see Sam all over Denver and every Wednesday at the Deer Pile at his show he runs with The Fine Gentleman's Club called Too Much Fun. We've always learned from Sam that you can't have too much fun, turns out, you can also never have to much love. Enjoy!
Cory has what may be his wackiest recorded conversation yet, when he discusses handfuls of topics like prayer, being able to spend middle class money on hallucinogens and Britney Spears with his dear friend Christie Buchele.Buchs is one of the hosts of the Empty Girlfriend podcast along with our bud Haley Driscoll. You can also see Christie's 'Makin' Fun' show at Deer Pile the last Thursday of every month. It is a kick ass show where the audience texts what they please to a projection screen behind a comic performing on stage. It is the best and you would be a real butt's hole if you don't attend. Enjoy the interview and Subscribe and rate on itunes, friends.
This week JD shoots the shit with guests Matt Wayman and Bobby Crane. Matt hosts the LMAO Comedy Show at the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse. Bobby is part of The Fine Gentleman’s Club and co-host of Too Much Fun at the Deer Pile. As well as just being two of the funniest guys in the 303. Topics discussed include, but are not limited to: our drugs of choice, working in food service industry, what it’s like doing comedy on the road, what it takes to be a good wingman, and violence in Denver.

Episode 30: The theme for our October show, "Two Sides to Every Story", provided an opportunity for a little bit of experimentation. We thought it might be fun to explore the nature of truth in true storytelling by looking at an age old adage, that there are two sides to every story. We invited pairs of storytellers to tell their versions of a shared experience or story. We were hoping to dig into what makes a story a story, what we can learn by looking in between the gaps, etc. We sequestered the storytellers while their counterparts were telling their version, so that what the audience got was free from influence. It was pretty danged cool. Part 2 of the show features true stories from scholar/activist Mary Robertson and Narrators co-host Robert Rutherford. These stories were recorded at The Deer Pile on October 17th, 2013 by our good friends at The Denver Diatribe.
