There's a common belief that selling a business is the ultimate jackpot—a one-time windfall that guarantees wealth and success. But is that the reality? In this episode I sit down with David C. Barnett, three-time best-selling author, entrepreneur, and former business broker, to unpack the realities behind buying and selling small and mid-sized businesses. David's journey began in advertising sales before he launched multiple ventures, including a commercial debt brokerage. That path eventually led him into business brokerage and private transaction consulting, where he has spent more than a decade advising entrepreneurs around the world. Drawing from his experience as the author of How to Sell My Own Business and seven other books, David challenges the common myths around exits. We discuss: Why selling a business is often a strategic outcome, not a guaranteed jackpot What actually makes a business sellable How leverage, risk, and market timing influence outcomes Why many owners misunderstand market dynamics The evolving role of technology in business transactions How to build a company that is transferable, even if you never intend to sell This conversation is practical, direct, and grounded in real-world deal experience. Whether you are planning an exit, considering an acquisition, or advising business owners, David offers insights that may reshape how you think about preserving and transferring business value. In this episode, you will: Learn how AI tools can speed up deal sourcing and buyer profiling Understand how to assess and manage risk when financing a business purchase Hear the limitations of exit planning and the importance of execution Highlights: (00:00) Meet David C. This episode of Retire with Style features Alex Murguia and Wade Pfau discussing the role of annuities in retirement planning, drawing from Wade's Retirement Planning Guidebook. They examine the purpose of annuities, the primary arguments for and against their use, and the key types available. The conversation also emphasizes how annuities align with different retirement income styles and broader income strategies. Wade explains core concepts such as mortality credits and the distinctions between fixed and variable annuities, offering a clear framework for evaluating whether and how annuities may fit into a retirement plan. Listen now to learn more! Takeaways Annuities are tools that fit well with certain retirement income styles. They provide guaranteed lifetime income through risk pooling. Arguments against annuities often stem from viewing them as investments rather than income tools. Annuities can have high fees, especially variable annuities. Mortality credits allow for higher spending in retirement. Fixed annuities provide principal protection, while variable annuities do not. The RISA helps identify which retirement income style fits an individual. Annuities can be compared to bonds, not stocks, for retirement planning. Understanding the different types of annuities is crucial for effective planning. Annuities can be used for tax deferral, but not in tax-deferred accounts. This week we ask a simple question. Is a fifty dollar white wine actually worth it?We head back to Umbria with the Rigogoli 2022 from Tenuta di Salviano. A fifty fifty blend of Viognier and Grechetto di Todi. An IGT wine built on freedom and intention. Named for the winemaker's grandfather, Rigogoli brings real story to the glass. We also kick off a new yearly tradition. The wine fridges are officially cleared. New year. Clean slate. Only three spots are open for 2026. Things go off the rails fast when Colin puts a natural orange wine straight into his fridge. No hesitation. No apology.Along the way we dig into why IGT does not mean lower quality, how Viognier and Grechetto work together, and why serious white wine should not be ice cold. We also revisit PiNope or ChardonnYay! and ask you the listener for your experience with the last white wine that truly surprised you?Wine detailsProducer: Tenuta di SalvianoWine: Rigogoli 2022Region: Umbria ItalyGrapes: Viognier and Grechetto di TodiABV: 13.5 percentPrice: Around $50Support the Show!Buy us a glass!https://buymeacoffee.com/cheers3Connect with the show. On the endless list of things going wrong near and far, this probably ranks rather low when it comes to issues to be massively upset over. But as you have probably learned by now, with the possible exception of Pat Riley when he was still young enough to have Kurt Russell and Michael Douglas emulate him in mainstream films, no one knows how to manufacture outrage like me. So here we are — another two hours of highly manufacture outrage, as pathetic as it is performative, with occasional (well, 117 minutes) musical interludes. Is this an earnest discussion or just a desperate, badly timed publicity stunt? (We lean heavily toward the latter.)SHRM's Identity Crisis: Why does the world's largest HR organization keep acting like a political lobbying group instead of a resource for practitioners? Cee Cee even details the generic form letter she got after canceling her membership.Faith-Based Hypocrisy: Warren shares a schadenfreude story about a "true believer" business owner who lost a massive contract on day one, thanks to a well-deserved morality clause and a whole lot of cussing. We love to see it.The HR Rights of Passage: We create a cynical checklist of the things all true HR professionals must deal with, including the inevitable hygiene talk (and how the smell of vanilla body spray combined with old ashtray smoke can break a man). The Gen Z Stare & Mama's Helper: Is the new generation of job candidates okay? Cee Cee recounts a chilling, soul-empty experience with a grocery store worker, while Warren's daughter has to deal with applicants whose moms are sitting in on the interview. Hello Rank Squad!Today we're diving back into the murky depths of the transfer market, and looking at some of the potential deals that are being discussed right now. It's a seller's market, in so many ways, and that often means that teams will overpay for players - whether through a gamble on a major talent, a burning need to fill a gap, or because they're absolutely hellbent on trying to turn things around after a tough season the year before. We look at five deals that feel like they might be a big step, with Dean suggesting them, and Jack generally arguing about why it's actually a pretty good bit of business - for a variety of different price tags and reasonings. Before that, we get stuck into the Club World Cup, hear about Dean's experiences on the ground and Jack's ones watching from across the Atlantic, and try to work out what we can learn from the tournament a year out from the 2026 World Cup.It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
