Wolfgang Hammer - The Power of Story - [Invest Like the Best, EP.447] My guest today is my friend Wolfgang Hammer. Wolfgang is a successful film producer and executive who helped create House of Cards and ran several major studios, including Lionsgate, CBS Films and Miramax. He's now building a new kind of film studio with support from Mitch Lasky and Marc Andreessen. Wolfgang also helps founders and CEOs use storytelling to better understand what they do, and why it matters. In many ways, this conversation is a manual for how to find that story and communicate it in a way that resonates. Wolfgang shares the questions and tools he gives leaders to help them do the same. Our conversation explores how stories work, what great ones have in common, and why understanding your own story can be transformative. We talk about the three layers every story must have — the external, the emotional, and the philosophical — and how they apply to building companies and leading people. So many CEOs — at both startups and massive fortune 100 companies — have Wolfgang to thank for changing how they think and talk about their business, and I hope this episode gives you the tools to do the same. Please enjoy my conversation with the great Wolfgang Hammer. Learn the five key plot points that turn struggling manuscripts into finished novels—and exactly where they need to appear in your story structure.Have you ever felt like your story just isn't clicking, no matter how much effort you've put into it? Maybe you've polished your prose, developed your characters, and built an intriguing world—but something still feels off.In this episode, I sat down with Kristina Stanley—award-winning author, fiction editor, and founder of Fictionary—to uncover the structural secrets that transform good stories into unforgettable ones. Here's what we discussed:[03:15] Why your beautifully written novel might feel "stuck" despite compelling characters—and the structural secret that transforms wandering manuscripts into page-turners[05:45] The five essential scenes that form every successful novel's backbone, including the exact percentages where they should appear in your manuscript[23:45] Why the midpoint is where most novels soar or lose their way—and how to create the shift that keeps readers hooked through Act Two[30:30] Plot Point 2's dual purpose that most writers miss: combining your darkest moment with the crucial information needed for the climax[34:30] How to craft climaxes that satisfy readers by answering your story's central question (not just adding exciting action scenes)Plus, Kristina shares her "story test" for evaluating your manuscript and explains why fixing structure before polishing prose will save you months of revision time.

This is where your story starts to take shape around something deeper - a belief, a truth, an argument you're making about the world. You'll learn why every story is, at heart, trying to prove something, why clichés aren't the enemy, and how one simple sentence can become the emotional compass for your entire book. Whether you're writing about magical cakes or dystopian rebellions, this step will help you root your story in meaning.Tune in to discover how to name the soul of your novel - and why that matters more than you think.

Do you long to go deeper in your faith and help your children fall in love with Scripture — not just the stories, but the whole story? Today Zach Windahl shares what led him to dedicate years to studying scripture. He emphasizes the importance of simplifying the Bible for others, particularly for those who feel overwhelmed or confused. After moving to Australia and enrolling in a transformative Bible study program, everything changed. He discovered how the entire Bible connects — from Genesis to Revelation — and how understanding Scripture through a Hebrew lens opens up a whole new depth of meaning. The Bible isn't random. Every story, every verse, every command points to Jesus. This sermon wraps up the All Along series by exploring one powerful truth: Jesus has been present in every moment of history, including the moments of your own life. From the pillar of cloud in Exodus to the voice in the burning bush, from the words “I AM” in John 8 to the promise of Psalm 110, this message shows how Christ has always been near, even when we didn't recognize Him. If you've ever wondered where God is in your story, this message will help you see that He's been there all along.

After we get some ugly but necessary business out of the way, we're back to ranking stories again on this month's special!
This week's sermon is a little different, because in it, Rebecca addresses the heartbreaking decision to end Gilead. I attended service in person for this sermon, and I gotta say, I'm glad I was there. But for those of you who weren't, or for those of you who would just like to listen again, here it is. After a vote by the congregation to close the church during the service this past Sunday, Gilead will officially be ending. And as hard and as sad as it was to come to this decision, we're trying not to get too sad yet because we will continue with services and celebrations and storytelling until at least Easter of this year. So, we have that to look forward to. It's not the end quite yet. SUPPORT As we continue to have services and celebrations so that we can close Gilead with celebration and joy, we still could always use your support. You can support us here on our website. Any and all donations will go towards providing an incredible final chapter to our congregants and listeners before we close this spring. JOIN US IRL! Whoever you are, whatever your story is, you are welcome with us. Sign up for our newsletter here to stay up to date on when and where our services are happening! (Sometimes that info changes, so the newsletter is the best way to keep up.) ABOUT US Just to make sure this is clear, we'd like to reiterate that everyone is welcome at our church. EVERYONE. We believe that human diversity of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression — not to mention age, ability, relationship status, size — is necessary to reflect the fullness of God. Whoever you are, whatever your story is, you are welcome here. *** This episode was recorded during our service on January 12, 2025.

In this inspiring episode of Bleeding Daylight, host Rodney Olsen sits down with Michelle Nezat, the host of the More Than a Song podcast and author of "A Seat at the Table". Michelle shares her deeply personal journey of faith, tracing the roots of her biblical knowledge back to her grandparents who instilled in her a love for Scripture from a very young age. Through her experiences with Bible quiz competitions, mentorship, and a desire to help others connect with God's word, Michelle developed a passion for revealing the deeper biblical foundations behind Christian music lyrics. The conversation explores Michelle's unique approach to engaging with Scripture, emphasizing the importance of seeing the Bible as God's unified story rather than a self-help manual. She discusses her podcast, which has over 500 episodes exploring the biblical roots of popular Christian music, and her novel, which aims to introduce people to the God of the Bible in an accessible and compelling way. Michelle passionately advocates for developing biblical literacy, encouraging listeners to start with God, understand His holiness, and view Scripture as a revelation of who God is, rather than focusing solely on personal application. If you could truly see someone this way—every experience, every word, every choice, every emotion—your understanding of them would be boundless. You would meet them with an overwhelming sense of compassion, humility, and gentleness. Each encounter would be less about who they appear to be now and more about honoring the entire story that made them this way.Knowing each event that shaped them would remind you how complex and fragile human lives are, how each of us carries a lifetime's worth of emotions, traumas, triumphs, and quiet decisions. You would see that even choices that may seem flawed or puzzling have roots in experiences, circumstances, and beliefs as real and vivid as your own.You would treat them with patience because you'd understand that what they feel today isn't just a reaction to now, but to a lifetime. If you could hear every word that ever shaped them, you would become deeply aware of the power of words and choose your own with care, aiming to add meaning, warmth, and hope to their story.Knowing their potential futures, their final breath—this might bring a sense of reverence. You might see each moment as rare and fleeting, each interaction as part of their journey and your own. You would see how powerful your influence could be in their life, and that awareness would deepen your commitment to kindness. Every word, every gesture would carry the weight of knowing that it can change a heart, leave a memory, or lighten a burden. In short, with that knowledge, you would treat them with the utmost compassion, as a guardian of their story, one who acknowledges their past, supports their present, and, perhaps, in a small way, contributes to the future they will live.TOPICS I COVEREDEmpathy and UnderstandingImagine meeting someone and instantly understanding their entire life story—their experiences, emotions, and decisions.
