Sue Hausmann has been sewing since her first 4-H project at the age of 10 and she has been inspired and mentored by neighbors, friends and work colleagues all her life. Her proficiency in this art resulted naturally from a lifetime of sewing for herself, and her home, her four children, and now ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her enthusiasm for sharing the life-skill of sewing and quilting with others is her passion, and for more than 50 years her profession focused on sewing education. Now “retired” Sue and her husband Herb occasionally present programs and share their expertise at Edutainment and Teaching and she presents programs for her local ASG and Quilt Guild. Her focus is to “give the gift of sewing” with handmade quilts, clothing and more for those she loves, teaching others to sew and creating things for herself and her home. Before retirement Sue was Executive Vice President of Consumer Motivation for a Husqvarna Viking sewing machines and was responsible for the Education and Training programs and was part of the new product development and written material teams in Sweden. She has produced and hosted more than 600 public broadcasting programs and has 33 books to her credit including Sew Fast, Faster, Fastest, published by Rodale Press. She was Executive Producer of the America Sews with Sue Hausmann, America Quilts creatively and Sew Young, Sew Fun Public Television series. Sue received the 2002 American Sewing Guild “Sewing Hall of Fame Award”, the 2007 “Master CSE award from the Sewing Education Alliance” and was inducted into the Sewing Machine Hall of Fame in 2012. She has taped classes for Sulky and Craftsy which are available for purchase on their web sites. She is also enjoying working with the pre-schoolers at Grace Church, Sahuarita and having more time to sew for family and to teach others to sew. Sue attributes much of her success to the encouragement and support of her husband of 62 years, Herb, and is thrilled he joins her in the mission of sharing the joy of sewing and quilting and the joy of life! On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about owning a yarn shop with my guest Cadence Kidwell. Before Cadence opened her yarn shop, Fuzzy Goat, she was at Florida State University – where she taught Creative Writing, Multicultural Literature and designed a certificate program for students to develop cultural competencies. University life instilled a strong core of service to people seeking to improve their lives. One of her favorite pieces in her yarn shop is a SERVICE sign over the counter, announcing that the team is there to serve. In her mid 50's Cadence decided that she could either steady-on into her last decade of university life or she could join the makers' life – make a business from a rough-worn building & fill it with beautiful yarns made by strong women. Something she learned at FSU was the value of conversation among those that see the world differently – something that used to happen at, say, bowling leagues, and is disappearing in our lives. Cadence believes that knitting creates that space where conversation across generations and life experiences is valued and sought after.  +++++ This episode is sponsored by Craftsy. In My Vermont Table, Bullock-Prado takes readers on a sweet and savory journey through each of these special seasons. Oh Canada, we'll have on the program Chef Dale Mackay. Touring the world as Gordon Ramsay's right-hand at his Michelin-starred restaurants, the first Top Chef Canada winner and AAA Five Diamond Award winning Chef Dale MacKay is gearing up for a huge 2023 as he competes in the new season of Bravo's Top Chef: World All-Stars. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about owning a local yarn shop with my guest, Ana Campos. Ana is a Brazilian knitting instructor, fiber witch, and designer with over 20 years of knitting experience. She currently makes her home by the sea in Salem, Massachusetts, known as the Witch City. As a Latina and an immigrant, she values the opportunities for connection, community, and common ground that knitting creates. Ana's love for the knitting community led her to open Circle of Stitches, the witchiest yarn shop, in 2015. Her focus is on empowering knitters to grow their skills and technical knowledge, so everyone can make pieces they love. She is passionate about teaching students how to customize patterns for the perfect fit. She also loves teaching Portuguese knitting, which reminds her of her grandma Tina back home in Rio, and hosting her monthly tarot study group.   Ana is an inaugural member of the Vogue Knitting Diversity Advisory Council, and a co-creator of Latines y Lana, an ongoing project to elevate and share the work of Latine fiber artists. Ana loves helping folks find inspiration and expand their skills, and her favorite projects are sweaters and socks.    When she is not at her shop, you can find her elbows-deep in her dye pots. Growing up in the tropics gave her a lifelong passion for bright colors and bold combinations, which she brings to her line of hand-dyed yarns, Toil & Trouble. She loves dyeing colorful sock yarns, and hopes this book will help you fall in love with socks too! Today, it's all about how the Cake Industry has changed, so we're going to be talking about what I've observed to be happening in our industry over the last ten to fifteen years and also how the face of our industry has really changed a lot, during that time. Listen in to find out more! Back when I was a girl, just starting out on my cake decorating journey, there was no Youtube, or Craftsy. In fact, there was pretty much nothing at all really, except for cake decorating books and a couple of guilds, so it was really quite a sad and lonely place. Things have really changed, though and a lot of growth has happened, since then. Join me on today's show, as I discuss some of the things that I've become aware of lately in the cake industry, and the effect that our current culture of social media, online classes and gimmicky tools has had on it. Listen in now! Show highlights: The growth that has happened, as a result of TV shows and the accessibility of Learning Channels, like Youtube and Craftsy. Some of my observations of what I've noticed that has changed, in the industry. The cake that my older sister asked me to create for her wedding shower, when I was sixteen. (There are actually pictures of it on my blog!) The Wilton Level One Butter Cream Class that some friends of mine got together and bought for me, back when I was a young Mom, first living in Australia. We have a lot more awareness of our worth, as artists today, yet we tend to focus far less on the actual artistry, as the industry has grown. The stunningly beautiful work of the true artists of our industry, that are actually pushing the boundaries of the definition of cake, of art and even of edible. The widening divide, between the non-artists and the true artists of our industry. My love-hate relationship with the stamp out tools that are available currently for our industry. The sadness of the really easy to replicate cakes, that are available in today's mass market. The X-Factor about today's cakes that I wish were a little more X-factorish... What I've noticed about the average age of the people in our industry today. What I've noticed to be happening lately, with the 'Facebook famous' crowd and their culture of sharing. How the questions from my Coaching clients have changed lately. What's happening with live classes, today. Why you need to actually sign up for live classes as soon as possible, after deciding to do them. Cookies don't even look like cookies anymore! Pushing the boundaries of artistry. Listen in today, to find out all about this amazing Cookie Legend.   Georganne is from a military family. She's also a mom of four kids, all under the age of ten- which makes her legendary in my mind! She wrote the Cookie Companion book, which came with its own set of cookie cutters and she's also made custom cookie cutter designs for Anne Clark. She's a Cookie Con presenter, she was the Cookie Connection Educator of the Year in 2015, she's a Craftsy instructor, she teaches in-person classes and she also manages to run a blog, pretty much full time and, basically, she's really an all around Cookie Goddess! For those of you who don't know, she started out as a cake baker and then ditched that for cookies.  Listen in and find out about Georganne's amazing career in baking and also how Cookie-ers actually make money. Show highlights: Georganne's transition (which really hasn't actually happened yet) from baking as a hobby to it becoming a full-time business gig for her. How Georganne doesn't really feel legit with what she's doing...  she somehow thinks that for a business to really be legit, you have to hate it. What it would take for Georganne to do a custom order. Where Georganne's main source of income comes from- a toss up between live classes and the advertising on the blog itself. Is blogging really is a way to make money?- Georganne was making just over $1 per month after her first three months and then just over $20 after her first year. The amount of time and effort that goes into blogging, so to make it, you really just have to keep on showing up consistently, until the return eventually comes...maybe... Georganne's experience of growing her blog, while growing her kids.  The three areas that allow for Georganne to feel valued and whole, as a person – her family, her church and her cookie community. Georganne's struggle to balance her time, so that her kids get the best of her and not just the left overs. The importance of being flexible when you're a working parent. If you really want something, do it! You really can be so much more than you are right now! The issues that cookie-ers have that cake bakers don't. How cookie-ers get around the money making issue. Getting over the weirdness of marketing yourself and your product. The best and the worst parts of what Georganne does.  The love or the money? Finding the balance. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcastI chat with Malka Dubrawsky. Malka is a fabric designer and quilter who is best known for her hand dyed and pattern fabrics. She has a degree in studio art from the University of Texas in Austin and trained to be a printmaker, but finding herself home with young children and without a press she began to work in fiber art. After several years exploring art quilts, Malka became interested in connecting with people more directly by creating functional items out of her own hand dyed and patterned fabrics. Today she designs and sews quilts and pillows and creates hand dyed yardage, all of which she sells in her online shop, A Stitch in Dye. Malka is the author of two craft books, is an instructor on Craftsy, designs fabrics for Moda, and will soon be opening a maker space in Austin, Texas where she lives. Today's episode is sponsored by Okan Arts, a fabric shop in Seattle, Washington specializing in vintage Japanese yukata cottons. Visit Okan Arts online to check out what the offer: okanarts.com.
