This one has been on the cards for a while - at least in my mind! Alice In Chains head honcho Jerry Cantrell has been a dream guest of mine since I launched Life In The Stocks in 2017, and it's an honour to finally have him on the show. The only other podcast Jerry's done before this one is Let There Be Talk with Dean Delray - which, coincidentally, is the one of only two podcasts that I regularly listen to, the other being WTF with Marc Maron. So that makes this appearance on Life In The Stocks extra special. We talk all about Seattle and coming up in that scene with *those bands, we discuss working on movies like The Cable Guy and Jerry Maguire, playing with Duff McKagan, Jerry's love of blues and country music, his relationship with William DuVall, his admiration for Mike Patton, and his three incredible solo albums, Boggy Depot, Degradation Trip, and Brighten - out October 29th. Thanks to Jerry for coming on the show. I hope we can do another one in person someday.Follow me on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram: @mattstocksdjCheck out the Life In The Stocks Patreon page, support this podcast, and get all kinds of extras in return, from bonus podcasts & DJ mixes to archive print interviews & radio shows. www.patreon.com/lifeinthestocksMy first book, 'Life In The Stocks: Veracious Conversations with Musicians & Creatives (Vol. 01)' is also out NOW and is available via Amazon, Waterstones, Blackwell's & Rare Bird Publishing. https://rarebirdlit.com/life-in-the-stocks-veracious-conversations-with-musicians-creatives/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast

Welcome back if you're a return listener to this soundcast. If this is your first time in, welcome as well to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, where we offer you a weekly tasting platter of comedy soundcasts from around the internet for your ears. Bite-sized little clips that will, hopefully, tempt you to seek out the shows we're featuring in their entirety. I'm your host for Episode 274, Marc Hershon, but to keep up the frenetic pace of putting out a weekly show, I split the hosting duties by switching off weeks with Mr. Tyson Saner. And if you didn't catch last week's entry, Epi273, in which Tyson featured clips from Amazing Pop Culture Podcast, Life is Short with Justin Long, and WTF with Marc Maron. Don't despair, as you can still catch the episode on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Audible, iHeart Radio, Soundcloud, and wherever fine soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. You can also grab it from our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where we have stockpiled our past 10+ years of comedy soundcast clippery and also interviews we have done over the past decade. Just a quick reminder that Tyson and I are currently (and always have been) clipping and presenting this array of soundcast snacks out of the goodness of our hearts. We so far have failed to lure any sponsors to this show, other than our freeloading fake advertiser Henderson's Pants, and it actually costs money to put this sucker out every week. We're not complaining – we love doing this – but what would be so super nice of you would be if you could show your appreciation for our efforts by rating and reviewing Succotash Show wherever you happen to be getting it from. A quick five stars, a couple of lines about how enchanting the show is – you're in, you're out, no one gets hurt. Thanks in advance – we really do appreciate your listenership and we hate to beg, but hey… I've got a full rack of clips to share with you this week, from comedy soundcasts For What It's Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Movies to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. In addition, this episode is brought to you by Henderson's Pants new Beavertail Pants! CLIPS What Are You Watching?I'm going to kick things off with a special bonus clip! What makes it special? Well, I'm in it. That's right. It's me being featured as a guest on another soundcast. Hosted by past Succotash guest and friend of the show Chris Mancini, What Are You Watching? is Chris and a guest talking about what they're watching, mostly on TV but sometimes movies, too. So we've had Chris on, we've featured his soundcast, so all it took was a little begging and pleading to be invited to be the guest for his recent Episode 50. It was a nice change of pace to be the interviewee, and we had a great time talking about a bunch of shows. The clip is from our discussion of the Hulu/FX streaming show Y: The Last Man. Movies to be Buried With with Brett GoldsteinIf you're a fan of Ted Lasso, the big breakout hit on Apple TV last year starring Jason Sudekis – as I am, regardless of the pounding it's been taking from people this season – then you probably also love the character of Roy Kent. Portrayed by Brett Goldstein, Roy's a foul-mouthed contentious veteran footballer who becomes a foul-mouthed, slightly less contentious coach in Season 2. Brett started out as a staff writer on the show who lobbied Sudekis and the producers to let him play Roy and wouldn't you know? The guy's perfect. What I didn't know of, I'm ashamed to say, is that Brett is also a comedian and, what's more, has been hosting more than 160 of episodes of his own comedy soundcast called Movies To Be Buried With, with Brett Goldstein. He brings in a guest, explains that they've been killed in some manner, but the good news is that they go onto an afterlife where they get to explain their life through their favorite movies. Episode 121 featured guest Patton Oswalt and, as you can imagine, hilarity ensued. We have an ear peek for you… How To Survive! with Danielle & KristineNext up is a clip from the debut episode of a brand new comedy soundcast: How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine. Every episode features hosts Danielle Koenig & Kristine Kimmel doing their best to help you figure out how to “survive the things that could kill you and the stuff that just makes you wish you were dead.” In their kickoff installment, it's how to both survive a wildfire and also, with the help of their comedic actress friend and guest, Alex Alexander, how to survive being fired. Our clip is from the first part, and jumps into what you should do if you're at home and can see a fire coming… Storytime with Seth RogenWe've clipped another soundcast that just kicked off  in recent weeks: Storytime with Seth Rogen. Seth has a very funny and creative mind, and this is a pretty inventive show, with guests popping in an out as he unfolds someone's story that intersects with other people and becomes their story along the way. In his first episode, the story belongs to Quinta Brunson, a writer, producer, comedian, and actress. You may know her from her self-produced Instagram series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. But before she got into showbiz, she was a Jehovah's Witness, living a pretty buttoned up lifestyle. Until she was on a date in Phildelphia and happened to meet Paul Rudd, yes, that Paul Rudd, at the movie theater she was in. The impact of that encounter changed the course of her life. Our clip is from Seth's chat with Paul Rudd, who doesn't recall his encounter with Quinta, but does explain why he's so damn nice to people. For What It's WorthMurray Valeriano is a comedian and longtime soundcaster – you maybe heard his show Road Stories, where he chatted with fellow comics about mostly hell gigs – and we've met repeatedly during the five-year-run of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. He has a new-ish soundcast up and running, which I reviewed last week for This Week in Comedy Podcasts for Vulture.com called For What It's Worth and, as Murray calls it, “the only music and comedy game show … that matters!” It's a fast-paced game show with a lot of opportunities for the comedian contestant to bust each other's (and Muraay's) chops while trying desperately to correctly answer music trivia questions. This clip is from a recent episode featuring Jimmy Pardo, Gary Brightwell, and Geoff Tate, and the opening round, called “The Rock Wall”. That's what you're going to hear, and a few other little odds and ends, on Succotash Epi274. Here's hoping you enjoy our clip harvest for this week, and that you are inspired to go listen to one or all of the shows we're featuring this week. If you're having trouble remembering the show titles or where you can find them, I invite you to slide over to our blog page for this episode at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where you'll find lovely little clickable titles for the show AND clickable Twitter or Instagram links for the folks involved in the soundcasts. Tyson Saner will be right in this same feed next week with Episode 275 which will likely have a new crop o' clips for you. In the meantime, try to treat everyone you meet decently, wear a mask if you're supposed to, vax if you haven't, and if anyone asks if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I am your host for the duration of this episode of Succotash numbering 273. Last week in Epi272, my co-host and every-other-show-host Marc Hershon brought the listener, which may or may not have included you, a Chats episode where he sat down to talk with John Ross Bowie (The Big Bang Theory, Speechless) of the Household Faces soundcast and, as Marc put it "literally dozens and dozens of things". It's a fun interview and I urge you to check it out soon. This week it's a clip show for you, so I've got a trio of clips for you from the soundcasts Amazing Pop Culture Podcast, Life is Short with Justin Long, and WTF with Marc Maron. I've also got an advert from longtime non-paying sponsor Henderson's Pants and their new Leaf Behind Pants, just in time for Fall, to round out the episode nicely. CLIPS Amazing Pop Culture Podcast This soundcast provides expert commentary on comedy, music, movies, TV, news, history and everything in between. Hosts Dags and Assistant Manager Mike Resin enjoy their childish comedy and light-hearted fun! Our clip is from August of this year, the episode entitled: "Masters of the Universe: the Kevin Smith Cut". The boys dip into the 2021 Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, developed by Kevin Smith. Life is Short with Justin Long Every episode features host Justin Long cracking open the heads of his guests to get to the good stuff: how they find meaning in life, what their favorite snack food is, which emoji they use most, etc. Our clip goes back a couple of years to pre-pandemic November, 2019, and guest Kevin Smith. They swap stories from Tusk, Zack and Miri Make A Porno, and all the other projects they've worked on together. And Kevin talks about how his Catholic upbringing was a gateway to his worship of superheroes. WTF with Marc Maron Back in March of this year, comedian/actor//writer Marc Maron welcomed Eddie Murphy in to talk about his standup days, Richard Pryor, his movie career, fatherhood and why now was the right time to make Coming 2 America. We clip off a little bitty piece of that convo. That, then, concludes the first episode of October. I do hope you find some entertainment in what I've brought to you, and I hope it also perhaps gives you one or two ideas as to what you might choose to listen to next. If we piqued your interest in the slightest then we can safely put that one in the "win" column as it were. Another thing before I go: There will be another episode of my other regular soundcast, Anti Social Show, coming out very soon…perhaps it might even have been released before you hear me mention it in this episode of Succotash. If it has been released by the time you hear Epi275 I will be sure to let you know. You can also look for it and other episodes of Anti Social Show on my Soundcloud which can be found linked alongside many other links for the various things I am currently or have been involved in over the years at tysonsaner.com including original music and soundcast remixes along with links to my YouTube channel where I offer LOADS of gaming content, mostly console, many retro, more Minecraft coming. (I suppose that's more like "a few other things" rather than "another thing" as previously stated and for that, I apologize.) Thank you for listening. Be decent to each other. Please think of others when it comes to public health matters, and if anyone asks if you heard anything interesting recently won't you please…Pass The Succotash? — Tyson Saner

The Grief Portal is the gateway to nostalgia. It can also be a place to be sad, a place to wallow in self-pity if you're not careful. The Grief Portal can either be a positive place or a negative one. Everything depends on your level of healing. If you are in a place where you can reflect on your losses in a healthy way, the portal is merely a place to pause. However, if you are deep in your misery, the portal can be a dangerous and terrifying place. The choice is yours, and much depends on your healing journey. What is grief? Grief is the natural reaction to loss. Grief is both a universal and a personal experience. Individual experiences of grief vary and are influenced by the nature of the loss. Some examples of loss include the death of a loved one, the ending of an important relationship, job loss, loss through theft or the loss of independence through disability. Mourning can last for months or years. Generally, pain is tempered as time passes and as the bereaved adapts to life without a loved one, to the news of a terminal diagnosis or to the realization that someone they love may die. In this episode, I give specific examples of loss from my life. I have done other tribute episodes in the past, but this one is different. This show was recorded on what would have been my mother's 63rd birthday. She has been gone for just over 7 years. I felt the need to mark that anniversary. Also, you can blame Marc Maron's WTF podcast for a portion of this episode. This week's podcast promo: Metal Geeks, Vaccine PSA

Today I'm joined by documentary filmmaker Nick Scown, whose feature documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 was just released through Vice and is now available nationwide.   As Nick shares in the interview, what started as a bootstrapped DIY passion project ultimately evolved into a larger production that attracted a ton of incredible talent. Despite the humble beginnings of this project, Nick was able to attract subjects like Matthew Broderick, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Gilbert Gottfried, Marc Maron, Jeff Ross, and dozens of others, which made for an incredible story that is resonating with audiences far and wide.   Our discussion covers Nick's entire process from concept to final delivery, with special emphasis on the sales process to Vice, and their partnership with Nick. We also cover Nick's tactical approach to the production, his strategy for booking name interviews, experiences with grant funding and much more.   Links from the show: Too Soon Documentary - Movie Website Nick Scown - Twitter Nick Scown - Instagram For more content like this click here to sign up for my newsletter.

Hey, y'all - Joel here. Thank God, we're almost through the quarantine episodes. I enjoy this phase, but because we recorded so much unusable content (LOL), it's been a feat just to scrounge together a coherent episode each week. Much of the burden of this falls on John as he is the one who listens through all the raw audio and takes notes. Each week he listens to upwards of 12 hours of content. That's far more time than either of us are capable of being interesting. Where things get tough for Lukas and me is that once John sends out his notes and rough edit - it's go-time. Doesn't matter if it's 2 am - I need to get my info together right away so Lukas isn't kept waiting. This is why now I'm racing against the clock to post this before midnight.BEST CONSUMED THROUGH HEADPHONESFollow @3rdPersonPodwww.Patreon.com/3rdPersonPodwww.3rdPersonPod.com

We review the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 which you can catch on Vice TV on Sept. 8th, just a few days before the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attacks. The documentary features interviews with comedians including David Cross, Gilbert Godfried, Janeane Garofolo, and Marc Maron about the struggle to re-establish humor's place in the aftermath of the attacks that day. The film explores how stand-up comedians, Broadway performers, late-night hosts, and Saturday Night Live helped audiences laugh even in the darkest of days. Our guest is Julie Seabaugh the director, executive producer, and story editor of Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11.Too Soon premieres on VICE TV September 8 at 9 p.m. and will be repeating numerous times thereafter. (VICE TV is available via all major satellite and cable providers and the VICE TV app via iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.)Julie Seabaugh grew up on a farm in rural Missouri and discovered stand-up when Dave Attell performed during her senior year of college. Way back in 2003, she founded and edited the criminally ahead of its time print and online comedy magazine Two Drink Minimum. Now the only full-time freelance comedy journalist in the United States, she's contributed to The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, GQ, Variety, The A.V. Club, The Village Voice, The Huffington Post, Spin, Playboy, Vulture, Paste, Time Out New York, Time Out Chicago, and numerous other alt-weeklies. Seabaugh's coverage of modern roasting culminated in the 2018 book Ringside at Roast Battle: The First Five Years of L.A.'s Fight Club for Comedians, and her love of Mitch Hedberg led to producing/hosting 2020's Hope on Top: A Mitch Hedberg Oral History for SiriusXM's Comedy Central Channel (available to stream via the SiriusXM app). With Emmy-nominated director and editor Nick Scown, she is currently producing the documentary Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11. Participants include David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Gilbert Gottfried, Lewis Black, Darrell Hammond, Doug Stanhope, and Marc Maron; the film's 2021 release will mark the twentieth anniversary of the attacks. Among her career highlights, simultaneous Bridget Everett Village Voice and Roast Battle L.A. Weekly cover stories ran on both sides of the country the week of September 8, 2014. Interviewees over the years include Carl Reiner, Christopher Guest, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Joan Rivers, George Carlin, Don Rickles, Eddie Izzard, Drew Carey, Howie Mandel, Jimmy Kimmel, Key & Peele, Judd Apatow, Lily Tomlin, Mitch Hedberg, Seth Meyers, Wanda Sykes, and Zach Galifianakis. Having previously served as A&E staff writer at Las Vegas Weekly, Seabaugh won a 2015 Nevada Press Association Award for a cover profile tracing the downward health spiral of The Amazing Johnathan. “It's obvious the author is a wordsmith,” judges wrote. “Every sentence is well thought out. It's full of lively adjectives and truly paints a picture of what the Amazing Johnathan looks like, what he's experiencing and how he got to his current state. I felt like he was sitting next to me, boisterously telling his story.”For nearly two decades Seabaugh has covered, judged, and moderated panels at festivals including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Just for Laughs Montreal, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, New York Comedy Festival, Just for Laughs Toronto, Sasquatch, Grand Rapids' Gilda's LaughFest, Montana's Big Sky Comedy Festival, Austin's Moontower, Portland's Bridgetown, the Seattle International Comedy Competition, Riot L.A., Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, and Atlanta's Laughing Skull.Follow Julie on:Twitter: @julieseabaughFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Rabbit was nominated for an NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work and Rotten Tomatoes included it on their list of “Books Becoming TV Series We Cannot Wait to See.” Ms. Pat has since become a favorite with audiences and critics alike. Aretha's young life was fraught with death, rape, as well as controlling, toxic men. Director Liesel Tommy wanted to tell that part of Aretha's herstory which is exactly what she does with a thoughtful eye on balancing all of the beauty and horrors of Aretha's life. This was Liesl Tommy's first feature film and she had to fight for a lot of the scenes you will see when you watch Respect. We're so glad that she did and we're also happy about the attention she paid to Aretha's time spent in Muscle Shoals at the famous FAME studios where she recorded her first big hit I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You.  Erin and Liesl talk about the choice of using the  b.roll from Martin Luther King's funeral (Aretha was friends and worked with the Reverend), her father's famous parties which included folks like Smokey Robinson who is brilliantly played by actor Lodric D. Collins, and working with the exceptional Kris Bowers who scores the film. Psst, Kris was on our show earlier this year talking about his short film - A Concerto is a Conversation.  There's so much to talk about including the costumes (leopard print caftan y'all!) plus hair and makeup so let's go!Respect is in theaters NOW.Follow Liesl Tommy on Instagram & Twitter--Thanks for listening and for your support! I am in the midst of reading the fantastic book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, by Neil Postman which has gotten me to think not only about television, but the evil impact of social media on our ability to think critically. And what happens if the news media isn't concerned with finding truth anymore if the goal is to merely keep you entertained. Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I begin by talking about our culture's obsession with consumption and I read a few excerpts from Neil Postman's fabulous book which despite coming out over 20 years ago, still feels relevant today. We're consuming more content than ever before, but why is our culture more passive than previous generations. Are you consuming anything that actually inspires you to be an active participant in your daily life? I also briefly talk about a powerful new podcast by Bari Weiss entitled "The Real Story of the Central Park Karen" which I strongly suggest you take a listen to by clicking HERE. I play an excerpt from a recent Bret Weinstein podcast where he and his guest are talking about the troubles that stem from living in a "conclusion driven world." I also talk about our culture's insatiable desire for fame and attention and I play a clip from a recent Marc Maron podcast where he is speaking with Joseph Gordon-Levitt about the loss of purity in creativity. If one is creating merely for likes and attention, then what does that mean for the authenticity of the creative process. A lot here to unravel on today's episode and I also end the show by playing a brand new song off my upcoming record, entitled Kill Silently. If you enjoy today's episode and you want to support the show, please subscribe on iTUNES or consider sharing the show with your friends which is also a huge help. Book Vs Movie: “Almost Famous” Based on several articles by Cameron Crowe in Rolling Stone Vs the 2000 film  In 1973, writer Cameron Crowe was just your ordinary 16-year-old on the road with The Allman Brothers writing a cover story about the band's troubles and successes while going on the road. The resulting article came out in December 1973 and changed his life becoming a well-respected journalist who covered the biggest bands of the 70s including Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Eagles all before he was old enough to have a driver's license.  Years later, he would spend a year undercover as a high school student at Clairmont High School in San Diego to write Fast Times at Ridgemont High  (it would become his first screenplay as well.) Later films of his include Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, and Singles but the film that most closely resembles his life is Almost Famous.  The story of William Miller (played by newcomer Patrick Fugit) a teenager who gets the assignment of his dreams--to write about the new band “Stillwater” for Rolling Stone magazine. Along the way, he befriends “Band-Aids” who are NOT groupies but rather muses for their favorite musicians. Led by 16-year-old Penny Lane (Kate Hudson in an Academy Award-nominated performance) she follows lead guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) on the road and teaches William how to live life as if there were no tomorrow.  The movie is filled with rock-n-roll tropes such as greedy managers, awful promoters (Marc Maron's “lock the gates!” intro on the WTF podcast comes from this movie,) sex, drugs, and misogyny abound. There is also a great deal of heart and warmth here with Frances McDormand playing William's tough but loving mother. Zooey Deschanel plays his stewardess sister who is running away to find herself in the early 1970s.  The film was a big hit for all involved and the budget for the soundtrack (which includes more classic rock classics than can seem bearable) was reportedly $3 million. Crowe won an Academy Award for his screenplay and Hudson became the movie Rom-Com queen for the next 20 years.  There has been controversy, however, with THE ultimate groupie (no shame in her game!) Pamela Des Barres is NOT consulted even though she wrote the seminal work on fandom I'm With the Band. And by the way, aren't they a little young to be on the road?  So, between the original Cameron Crow articles and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!  In this ep the Margos discuss: The life story of Cameron Crowe What classic rock and touring meant in the 1970s  Almost Famous trivia Which actors did their own singing and played their own instruments  The cast: Patrick Fugit (William Miller,) Billy Crudup (Russell Hammond,) Frances McDormand (Elaine Miller,) Kate Hudson (Penny Lane,) Jason Lee (Jeff Bebe,) Zooey Deschanel (Anita Miller,) Anna Paquin (Polexia Aphrodesia,) Fairuza Balk (Sapphire,) Philip Seymour Hoffman (Lester Bangs,) Terry Chen (Ben Fong Torres,) Jimmy Fallon (Dennis Hope,) Marc Maron (angry promoter) and Peter Frampton as Reg. EDT is one year old! Phil and Jake celebrate by ranking podcasts, ranked lists and metatextuality on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We don't talk about it in the episode, but we both watched Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, a noteworthy film dealing with metatextuality (though you could get a lot of the same effect from watching YouTube reaction videos or the Bo Burnham video where he reacts to himself). One thing that we enjoyed we enjoyed from Symbiopsychotaxiplasm was when a film crew member says that every husband and wife from the moment of birth are destined to say poorly written cliched banalities at each other and all they want to say is "you're cutting my balls off" and "you're not a real man". Phil mentioned a podcast where you can listen to old Knicks games along with commentary. He has no proof that such a podcast exists, maybe he dreamed it. He's listened to commentary of old games on Knicks Film School but not the actual audio broadcast. He's sure such a thing could exist though. Other podcasts mentioned include This American Life, Planet Money, Radiolab and WTF with Marc Maron. In one scene in Luca, the characters watch Big Deal on Madonna Street. BD on MS is a really influential crime/caper movie. Heist type movies seem like they're all either remakes of this movie or Rififi (which BD on MS itself seems like a response to). TV shows discussed include The Office, Fleabag, Moonlighting, Saturday Night Live, Frasier, Batman: The Animated Series and Watchmen. Songs discussed include “Something to Ride To” & “Freaky Tales” by Too $hort, “We Got the Beat” by The Go-Gos, “1999” by Prince, “The Ghost of Tom Joad” & “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Hips Don't Lie” by Shakira, “Jackin' for Beats” by Ice Cube, “Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)” by Cinderella, “Whiskey Bent and Hellbound” by Hank Williams, Jr. and “Ramblin' Man” by Hank Williams. We talk a bit about the Grant Morrison run on the comic series Animal Man, Phil remembers issue #5 (“The Coyote Gospel”) where Wile E. Coyote is reimagined as a Christ figure who dies over and over again in our world to redeem his own. Bonkers shit. Jake mentions issue #26 (“Deus Ex Machina”), where Morrison himself appears in the comic. Jake also talks about Morrison's The Invisibles, which he hasn't read, but has heard about it containing some magic where the author trades places with one of the characters. for the record, Phil says that Morrison uses a non-gender binary pronoun but the author's own website uses he / him / his so Jake probably isn't guilty of misgendering. Jorge Luis Borges also dealt extensively with himself as a character. Here's the short piece we mentioned. He's maybe the most meta writer. The idea of Countryman and the Cinematograph seems to be "country people don't know that movies aren't real". The idea of people not knowing movies aren't real is fun, which is probably why so many people-- including your humble hosts-- repeat the probably-urban-legend of people running for cover during early screenings of Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat. In the back of Las Meninas you can see the painter, Diego Velázquez. Phil was trying to remember the Hal Hartley movie Flirt in which the same dialogue is used three different times. He tries to remember the name of this movie a couple times a year but It's kind of boring so it's difficult. Other movies discussed include The Princess Bride, The Truman Show, Deadpool, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Caddyshack, Watchmen, the Star Wars movies, The Matrix, Trading Places, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, the Wayne's World movies, Spaceballs, The Last Starfighter and Howard the Duck.
