Joel Danial (with special guest Alex Jordan) discus that an APP like SONIC MIXER could be a game changer in live music. Musicians (artists) are caught between streaming services and the corporatization of music venues. In this episode of Listening Lyrics, Joel discusses the App that works like Airbnb for house shows. It is extremely difficult for a start-up band (or even an established one) to get a show and cut their teeth. Venues are tough to crack. However, houses are abundant everywhere, and these could be used for House Shows more than they are. The APP is easy to use and it works. Joel helped to launch it in Austin last November. In the show he talks about how to get more potential hosts to open their homes to the idea. Its a two way street, the concerts become a very personal experience for both the artist and the guests. A big plus for the artist is that instead of just surviving on what ends up in the tip jar, the performer walks away with not only new fans but a source of income to keep going.

Eugene has a long history of house shows. In the 90s, the punk scene and its music could be heard in houses, with basement shows for bands like Black Flag gathering crowds of hundreds. But as reported in the Eugene Weekly, the city's music community say police crackdowns are hurting local artists, house venues and local music as a whole. Krista Kroiss is a recent intern for Eugene Weekly and is a senior at the University of Oregon. She joins us to share what artists are saying and how local law enforcement is affecting the communities.

A wide assortment of St. Louis bands, trios and DJs continue to depend on the living room stage. But even when those musicians move on to real clubs, networks of musicians continue to find themselves on unconventional stages to fill the gaps between club shows and traditional venues. This scene is alive and well in St. Louis. To talk about why these kinds of shows continue to thrive, we get to know Joe Mancuso and Stanley Jones of the Judson House; Larry Fuchs of the Kinda Blue Club; and Darian Wigfall, co-founder of the former artist collective FarFetched.
