Today's story is as fresh as you can get—it's the most recent story told at The Narrators. Last week we celebrated our 11th anniversary, outdoors in the parking lot of Buntport Theater. It was our first time performing anywhere near the theater in over a year and we were definitely a little rusty, but it felt great to be home. We want to take a moment to thank everyone who's supported the show over the years and the community that has grown around us, especially folks like Robert Rutherford and Mary Robertson, who brought the show to San Diego for a few years; my co-host Erin Rollman, who welcomed the show to its current home at Buntport; Sydney Crain, Karen Wachtel, Jessi Whitten, and Scott Carney, the patient and generous team of folks who help me keep the show and podcast going; and the countless others who've volunteered their time, energy, and personal stories to The Narrators over the years. And last but certainly not least, we'd like to thank Andrew Orvedahl for creating the show back in 2010. We can't think of any better way to commemorate the occasion than listening to a story from the master himself—today's story comes from comedian, actor, and game designer Andrew Orvedahl. Our next story comes from Bethany Hernandez. Bethany is a `Colorado Springs-based performer and artist who we are lucky enough to sometimes coax back up to Denver, a former home of hers. She's a favorite of the show and just a treat of a person. For this story, Bethany presents a triptych of "no"—three small stories where she spoke up for herself and felt more powerful for doing so. Bethany told this story live at the Buntport Theater on November 20, 2019. The theme of the evening was "Reply to All." Special thanks to Speedboat for today's outro music. Our next story comes to us courtesy of a long-time favorite of The Narrators, Corey Rhoads. He's a once—and hopefully future—mainstay of the Denver comedy scene, and most folks around town know Corey as a sweet man with a big heart and open arms. In this story, though, he talks about the seemingly cruel world that we live in and how he struggled to feel a sense of belonging—until a kind stranger gave him a big gift that changed his outlook. This story was recorded live on August 21, 2019 at Buntport Theater in Denver, Colorado; the theme of the evening was "Transplant." Special thanks to Knuckle Pups for today's outro music! Listen to Erin's story about her kidney transplant. Join our mailing list for updates about live shows Learn more about your ad choices. Your next storyteller is Karla Rodriguez. Karla's story is a throwback to 2015, back in the days before social distancing, when we would snuggle up together at Buntport Theater. A lot has happened to Karla since then—she moved to NYC, got hitched, and became a proud mom of two—all while slaying dragons as a corporate social responsibility expert in the film industry—but her story feels like it could have happened yesterday. The theme of the show was "Take a Hike." Thanks to Short Shorts for this episode's outro music. Wanna attend one of our live events? Click here to join our mailing list! Erin told this story in front of a live audience at Buntport Theater in October 2018; the theme of the evening was Ghosts.  Special thanks to Horse Girl for this episode's outro music! Your next storyteller is Lucy Roucis. We are heartbroken to say that Lucy passed away this week, after a decades-long battle with Parkinson's disease. Lucy might be best known by a broader audience for her appearance in Love & Other Drugs, but in Denver she's been a force on and off stage for years, a wickedly funny and talented actor and comedian who will be deeply missed. Lucy told a couple of stories at The Narrators, but today we're sharing her first—this story was recorded at Buntport Theater in November 2017; the theme of the night was "Under Your Skin." A special thanks to all of our sponsors—Buntport Theater Company, Illegal Pete's, From the Hip Photo, and Great Divide Brewing Company. Our theme music is by Whalehawk and we would also like to thank Nathan Hall, who provided the outro music for this episode.
