Derek Amato is one of only fifty people in the world who has what is known as “Acquired Savant Syndrome”. In acquired savant syndrome astonishing new abilities, typically in music, art or mathematics, appear unexpectedly in ordinary persons after they’ve suffered a head injury, stroke or a central nervous system (CNS) incident where no such abilities or interests existed before the trauma. The brain is an amazing thing. Derek has performed at numerous charity events, he's spoken at multiple TEDx events, he's been on major TV and radio networks, such as BBC World, Dr. Oz, Steve Harvey, NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, Fox and Friends, Weekend Sunrise-Australia, Canada AM, Huffington Post Live, NPR, and way too many more to list! He is a prodigy, and yet, is a down-to-earth, humble man with an extraordinary story! To connect with Derek:https://www.facebook.com/derekamatolive/or search: @derekamatolive Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/prevailbeyond)

The number of people in Colorado -- without legal immigration status -- is about 200,000, according to the Pew Research Center. People who are in the country illegally came under great scrutiny during President-elect Donald Trump's campaign, and his message resonates with many of his supporters. Now that he's won, these immigrants' lives stand to change. Also, your brain has an autopilot function, that directs you even when you're not aware. NPR's social science correspondent, Shankar Vedantam tells how a man from Colorado, Derek Amato, convinced his mom that he'd become a piano savant.
Derek Amato wasn't born a musical savant. He became one—almost instantly—after hitting his head on the bottom of a swimming pool.

Derek Amato is truly one in a billion. He is possibly the only person in the world to have acquired musical ability after a traumatic brain injury. A severe concussion left him with the ability to play piano, an instrument he had never played before. He now plays professionally and earns his living as a musician. Now, the music never stops. He sees it constantly streaming in front of his eyes in the form of black and white squares that compel him to play. Derek journeys to the Mayo Clinic to meet with one of the world's top neurologists to try and find a way to control the incessant stream of music: an incredible gift that is also his curse.
