I am so thrilled to share this very special LIVE episode with you. I had the absolute joy of sitting down in London with Marisa Poster, co-founder of PerfectTed and Jake Karls, founder of Mid-Day Squares, for an unforgettable conversation about scaling challenger brands, radical transparency, and building community. And yes, I got to TASTE a Mid-Day Square and it's INCREDIBLE. In fact, I actually ate 3 in a row.If you haven't come across Mid-Day Squares yet, they're the Canadian-born brand redefining healthy afternoon snacking with functional chocolate AND now scaling rapidly across the US. Co-founder Jake Karls last joined me on Brand Growth Heroes in 2023 (scroll back to hear the original episode), and since then, the business has experienced significant growth, expanding from $8M to tens of millions in revenue, with its sights firmly set on reaching $100M.Because it was PerfectTed who first introduced me to Jake, it felt only right to have Marisa Poster join in the conversation as co-host! And thanks to Lucky Saint who SO kindly offering us their fab upstairs event room, we gathered 50 friends, founders, and partners for a night of storytelling, snacking, and straight-talking about what it really takes to scale a challenger brand. In this episode, we dive into:How Mid-Day Squares grew from the kitchen table to producing 150,000 bars a day.Why therapy, radical transparency, and “building a business out loud” became part of their DNA.The importance of building fans not just customers. How PerfectTed is making matcha accessible and creating a whole new category. The realities of expanding into the US market (and what's different from Canada, the UK, and beyond). Why team communication and trust are make-or-break for founders. How Storytelling fuels challenger brands. What happens when new competitors enter a category and how to stay focused. The role of product excellence in sustaining growth. The highs, lows, trolls, and resilience it takes to keep going. This is part one of our Mid-Day Squares live series. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did hosting it!Next week we'll be sharing the Q&A session, which ran for a whole extra hour and was packed with brilliant audience questions. And as you'll hear at the end of this episode, Shani Higgs, Head of Sales at PerfectTed (and their fourth team member after the founders), will be stepping in to co-host with me for part two. You're going to learn A LOT so stay tuned!Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss it. And if you're not already, go check out Midday Squares and PerfectTed on Instagram and LinkedIn; their storytelling is world-class.A tiny favour: If this episode inspires YOU to think about new ways to drive business growth, please could you click FOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE on your favourite podcast app and leave a review, and maybe share with someone you know will enjoy it?This small gesture from you means the world to us, and allows us to share these nuggets of insight and value with you more often.Useful linksMidday Squares LinkedInPerfect Ted LinkedInMidday Squares FacebookMidday Squares InstagramPerfect Ted InstagramPerfect Ted TikTokMidday SquaresPerfect TedLucky Saint on LinkedInLucky Saint============================================================Thanks to Brand Growth Heroes' podcast sponsor - Joelson, the commercial law firm=============================================================If you're a founder, you already know how much of your energy goes into building the perfect product, creating standout branding and connecting with your consumers. But don't forget that scaling a CPG business also comes with a maze of legal complexities that can make or break your business journey. From contracts, term sheets and regulatory compliance to protecting your brand's intellectual property as you expand, it's essential to get it right. And that starts with the right legal partner. So we're thrilled to introduce Joelson, a leading commercial law firm that specialises in guiding the founders of scaling CPG brands, as Brand Growth Heroes' sponsor. With long-term relationships with clients like Little Moons, Trip, Eat Natural, Bear Graze, and Pulsin, Joelson is also famous for advising the innocent founders in their landmark sale to Coca-Cola! In this episode, I cover the highlights of the week of September 28 - October 5th, which brings us into October with a Venus / south node conjunction, and Mercury / Jupiter square.
Astrology forecast for Sept 28-Oct 4New episode up now!Chris and Almie discuss the Mercury-Jupiter square that will be exact on Wednesday, October 1st. This square could have us blowing things out of proportion, and/or saying things we don't really mean. It's a good idea to watch our words around the middle of this week as we could end up saying more than we'd like to.They also talk about the heightened energy we'll be feeling all week as we move towards a full moon in the fiery sign of Aries. The full moon won't be exact until Monday, October 6th, but we'll be feeling its buildup all week long. And they talk about the Pisces Moon connecting with the North Node on October 4th and 5th which could put us on a new path or bring us closer to something that's connected to our destiny. In “Ask a Scorpio,” Chris plays a trivia game with Almie where she needs to guess the names of famous people who were born with a Libra Sun and an Aries Moon.
Week 4 check-in with a rough public start, fresh algorithm adjustments, and trend edges you can actually track. No picks here. Just what shifted, why, and where the numbers have been reliable this season.

A Note from JamesThis might be the most insane chess story I've ever heard—not even really a chess story, but a cult story. It's wild, intense, and ultimately inspiring. Danny Rensch grew up in a cult in Arizona. At just 10 years old, the cult leader noticed his chess ability, took him away from his parents, and he wouldn't see his mother again for a decade.I first heard Danny's story when we met at Norway Chess a year and a half ago. Over dinner, he told me pieces of what would become his book Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life. I worried later that I'd pushed him into podcast mode before he was ready, but Danny said he was actually grateful for the chance to practice sharing his story out loud. Now, with his book out, he's ready to open up fully.Episode DescriptionDanny Rensch, Chief Chess Officer at Chess.com and author of Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life, shares the extraordinary story of how growing up in a cult shaped his childhood, his chess career, and his path to resilience. From being separated from his mother at age 10, to navigating indoctrination, hierarchy, and trauma, Danny explains how chess became both his prison and his salvation. This conversation is about more than chess—it's about control, identity, purpose, and how to reclaim your life from the stories others force on you. What You'll LearnHow a cult leader used chess as propaganda—and how Danny reclaimed the game as his own.The three pillars of cult life Danny experienced: like vibration, the process, and purpose. Why vulnerability and storytelling can be healing—but also how they can be weaponized. The psychological toll of being told your “purpose” at age 12—and how to build a new one. What Danny learned about resilience, family, and community after leaving the cult.Timestamped Chapters[02:05] A Note from James: introducing Dark Squares[02:34] Danny's childhood in a cult and separation from his mother[03:40] How Danny first shared his story with James in Norway[05:09] Learning to talk about trauma without fear of judgment[07:00] The challenge of context—why cult stories get misunderstood[08:20] Headline version: growing up in the Church of Immortal Consciousness[10:18] Cult hierarchy, trance teachings, and the Shelby School chess team[12:12] Was it spiritual belief—or a scam?[14:15] The role of Trina and Steven Camp, cult leaders and channelers[17:00] How hierarchy and “like vibration” destroyed marriages and families[23:00] The three pillars: like vibration, the process, and purpose[32:28] “The process”: group confession, alcohol, and weaponized vulnerability[41:54] “Purpose”: how chess became Danny's imposed destiny[46:41] What it meant to be told at 12 that chess was his life's purpose[50:18] Family secrets, hidden paternity, and the dangers of indoctrination[55:20] Processing trauma as an adult and writing Dark Squares[02:05] A Note from James: introducing Dark Squares[02:34] Danny's childhood in a cult and separation from his mother[03:40] How Danny first shared his story with James in Norway[05:09] Learning to talk about trauma without fear of judgment[07:00] The challenge of context—why cult stories get misunderstood[08:20] Headline version: growing up in the Church of Immortal Consciousness[10:18] Cult hierarchy, trance teachings, and the Shelby School chess team[12:12] Was it spiritual belief—or a scam?[14:15] The role of Trina and Steven Camp, cult leaders and channelers[17:00] How hierarchy and “like vibration” destroyed marriages and families[23:00] The three pillars: like vibration, the process, and purpose[32:28] “The process”: group confession, alcohol, and weaponized vulnerability[41:54] “Purpose”: how chess became Danny's imposed destiny[46:41] What it meant to be told at 12 that chess was his life's purpose[50:18] Family secrets, hidden paternity, and the dangers of indoctrination[55:20] Processing trauma as an adult and writing Dark Squares[63:28] Early aptitude signs: multiplication tables and ADHD focus[65:22] Childhood acting dreams and practicing “the eyebrow lift”[72:24] The most painful mother–son conversation: loyalty to the cult vs. family[73:39] Giving away belongings before leaving home—grieving his mother alive[87:31] Medical breakdown, ears exploding, and a failed chess career[88:16] Bedridden but discovering the internet: early lessons in tech and online chess[89:16] Buying domains, teaching online, and meeting Eric and Jay[114:25] On Magnus Carlsen: confidence, health, and the “Great White Shark” mindset[116:20] Chess.com and the post-COVID boom: making a living beyond world championshipAdditional Resources

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, David, and Ripley take the reins while Rick is away (Vacation? Sick? Secretly testing a smartwatch/tractor collab prototype?) And the conversation spins faster than a tourbillon on espresso. They roast Patek's new Cubitus (“Nautilus that went wrong?”), debate whether a $220K Greubel Forsey in steel is worth it for the mirror-polished backplate that mostly reflects your arm hair, and spar over whether watchmakers should run brands or leave it to the marketers. The trio dives into Geneva Watch Days tales of photographing grail pieces in suffocating, windowless hotboxes and gets lost in the Behrens x Vianney Halter KWH collab that somehow channels both energy meters and Nokia's “Snake” game. Toss in critiques of Hublot's dial-free Square Bang and admiration for Berneron's steel-armored platinum annual calendar, and you've got an episode full of horological heresy, genuine insights, and more oxygen-deprived giggles than a Swiss trade show should allow.

Danny Rensch grew up in the Church of Immortal Consciousness, a cult he usually refers to as ‘the Collective'. Started by Steven and Trina Kamp, the group followed the teachings of a Dr Pahlvon Duran, whose spirit first visited Trina when she was 9. In trances, she would convey the teachings of Dr Duran, whose last lifetime was lived as an Englishman in the 15th century. The group lived communally dispersed across basic housing in Tonto Village, Arizona. The Collective's small charter school, the Shelby School, became renowned for the performance of its chess team, and Danny Rensch was its star performer. By 14 he was a US Chess Federation national master, which was an Arizona state record at that age, and at 19 he was ranked first in the United States for his age, when he also achieved his first international master norm. Today he is the Chief Chess Officer and co-founder of Chess.com. In his memoir, Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life, out on 6 September and available now for pre-order, Danny delves into this part of his story for the first time.Links:Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life — by Danny Rensch, Hachette, September 2025Chess.com — With Danny Rensch's profile and statisticsIf you have been personally affected by involvement in a cult, or would like to support those who have been, you can find support with or donate to Cult Information and Family Support if you're in Australia (via www.cifs.org.au), and you can find resources outside of Australia with the International Cultic Studies Association (via www.icsahome.com). Aaron's Alley Going Ballistic Hawaii's Gun Laws: Aiming for Freedom, Not Chains The Second Amendment Foundation is challenging Hawaii's stringent gun purchase laws, arguing they infringe on constitutional rights. This legal action could significantly impact the gun community in Hawaii by potentially opening the door for less restrictive regulations and greater access to firearms. Gun rights advocates see this as a step against mounting efforts by gun control proponents to limit access to firearms. Supreme Court to Debate Pennsylvania's Silly Under-21 Carry Ban: A Step Towards Common Sense or Another Misfire? The Supreme Court is set to review a case regarding Pennsylvania's ban on concealed carry permits for individuals under 21, which could impact the rights of young gun owners. If the Court rules against the ban, it may bolster the Second Amendment rights for younger citizens, much to the chagrin of gun control advocates who prefer stricter regulations. The proposal could impact gun rights within the state, igniting further debates and mobilizing the gun community in opposition to increased restrictions. Ilhan Omar's Uninformed Crusade Against 'Assault Weapons' In light of Ilhan Omar's recent comments advocating for the elimination of "assault weapons," the gun community is likely to face increased scrutiny and calls for stricter regulations. Massie's Bold Move: Kicking the Anti-Gun Lobby Out of Schools Thomas Massie has introduced a bill aimed at repealing the Gun-Free School Zones Act. This move is likely to energize pro-Second Amendment advocates who argue that such zones do not enhance safety and may instead leave schools vulnerable to armed attacks. The introduction of this bill may lead to intensified debates within the gun community and among gun control advocates as they grapple with the implications for school safety. In the early days of the Hollywood studio system, producers exerted far greater creative control than any individual director. Then, in the mid-twentieth century, a group of young French critics issued a cri du coeur that gave rise to the figure of the auteur: visionary filmmakers ranging from Jean-Luc Godard to Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson. In the final installment of this year's Critics at Large interview series, Vinson Cunningham talks with fellow staff writer Richard Brody about the origins of auteur theory, and about the lengths to which directors have gone for artistic freedom in the decades since. They take Spike Lee's body of work as a case study, considering his new movie “Highest 2 Lowest” and how his filmmaking sensibility reflects his singular view of the world. “Style is a funny thing in movies,” Brody says. “If it's any good, it's not inseparable from substance. It is substance.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“The 400 Blows” (1959)“Breathless” (1960)“Notes on the Auteur Theory in 1962,” by Andrew Sarris (Film Culture)“Circles and Squares,” by Pauline Kael (Film Quarterly)“Martin Scorsese on Making ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,' ” by Richard Brody (The New Yorker)“The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013)“Spike Lee Comes Home,” by Richard Brody (The New Yorker)“Da Sweet Blood of Jesus” (2014)“Red Hook Summer” (2012)“A Great Film Reveals Itself in Five Minutes,” by Richard Brody (The New Yorker)“Highest 2 Lowest” (2025)“ ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Marks a Conservative Pivot for Spike Lee,” by Richard Brody (The New Yorker)“Do the Right Thing” (1989)New episodes drop every Thursday. In this episode of the Fintech One-on-One podcast, we talk with Paulette Rowe, CEO of Stax, a payments technology company that's making waves in the embedded payments space by taking a fundamentally different approach than many competitors. Rather than simply reselling services from payment processing giants, Stax has built and acquired the technology to own their entire stack, from gateway to clearing and settlement. This strategic decision allows them to move faster, provide better data, and offer more flexibility to their clients, particularly in the vertical SaaS and ISV market where they are seeing rapid growth.Paulette, who brings a unique perspective from her extensive payments experience across both the UK and US markets, discusses how Stax differentiates itself in the competitive embedded payments landscape, their innovative Stax Connect Plus offering that helps ISVs dramatically improve payment attachment rates, and how AI is already transforming their customer support operations. The conversation also explores the future of payments innovation, including the potential for agentic AI in e-commerce and Stax's international expansion plans. In this podcast you will learn:Paulette's career arc and the journey to the CEO job at Stax. How the US payments landscape differs from the UK and Europe. The comprehensive payments solutions provided by Stax. How they work with ISVs (independent software providers). The two acquisitions they have made in the past two years. Why they developed Stax Connect Plus. How Stax differentiates itself in the ISV embedded payments market. How they compete with the Stripes and Squares of the world. What markets Stax operates in today.Paulette's thoughts on the new payments rails being developed. How they have been using AI internally and then, Benji for customer support. How they are preparing for Agentic AI for e-commerce.The biggest opportunities in the future for Stax.Connect with Fintech One-on-One: Tweet me @PeterRenton Connect with me on LinkedIn Find previous Fintech One-on-One episodes
One cold night in December of 1957, a woman was awakened out of her slumber by a bright light. She looked out the window and saw a huge, close object that she believed was a plane going down. However, she soon realized that it wasn't a plane, and that the object was simply hovering right outside of her window.Subscribe to Just Another Tin Foil Hat: https://www.youtube.com/@JustAnotherTinFoilHatPlease take a moment to rate and review us on Spotify and Apple.Book Ryan on CAMEO at: https://bit.ly/3kwz3DOPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/somewhereskiesByMeACoffee: http://www.buymeacoffee.com/UFxzyzHOaQPayPal: Sprague51@hotmail.comDiscord: https://discord.gg/NTkmuwyB4FBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ryansprague.bsky.socialTwitter: https://twitter.com/SomewhereSkiesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/somewhereskiespod/Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ryansprague51Order Ryan's new book: https://a.co/d/4KNQnM4Order Ryan's older book: https://amzn.to/3PmydYCStore: http://tee.pub/lic/ULZAy7IY12URead Ryan's articles at: https://medium.com/@ryan-sprague51Opening Theme Song by SeptembryoCopyright © 2025 Ryan Sprague.
