Defying Boundaries—Regie Cabico On Poetry, Culture, And Teaching

Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio, I'm your host, James Navé. Today, I'm thrilled to be in conversation with my longtime friend, the one and only Regie Cabico—a poet, performer, and spoken word legend whose impact on the literary world is undeniable. Regie and I first crossed paths in 1994 at the National Poetry Slam in Asheville. He was a rising star out of New York City, and even then, his performances were electric—raw, fearless, and full of life. Over the years, he's become one of the most dynamic figures in performance poetry, winning the Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam and taking top honors at multiple National Poetry Slams. He's appeared on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, NPR's Snap Judgment, and MTV's Free Your Mind, not to mention being published in Poetry Magazine, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, and The Academy of American Poets platform. Now based in Washington, D.C., Regie continues to shape the literary landscape, mentoring young poets, teaching performance techniques, and bringing poetry into classrooms, theaters, and communities nationwide. His long-awaited debut full-length collection, A Rabbit in Search of a Rolex, just hit the shelves, blending humor, surrealism, and sharp cultural critique. In this episode, Regie and I reminisce about our early days in spoken word, explore the evolution of poetry from stage to page, and dig into the deeper truths that poetry reveals—sometimes through hyperbole, sometimes through raw honesty. Whether we're talking about teaching middle schoolers the art of exaggeration or reflecting on the shifting role of poetry in our lives, one thing is clear: Regie has never stopped pushing the boundaries of what poetry can be. Join us for this lively, heartfelt conversation with a true poetic force.

If you've lived through horrific trauma or abuse, is it really fair of us to say that the ways you've learned to cope are “bad,” or to use clinical speak, “maladaptive”?  This week on It's OK, Stephanie Foo, author of What My Bones Know, joins me to talk about complex PTSD and the ways we pathologize human responses to trauma. You'll also hear how claiming your own messy, complex coping mechanisms can help you build a community that sees you and loves you.  If you're haunted by any type of trauma, or know someone who is, this conversation is a great introduction to complex PTSD, and the work of survivorship.    In this episode we cover:    Why pretending to be a high-performing badass is maybe not in your best interest How storytelling can make you feel less freakish and alone The real problem with most books on trauma and C-PTSD   We're re-releasing some of our favorite episodes from the first 3 seasons. In a small fishing village in Mexico, Belen Delgado made a discovery that would change his life: a massive cache of callo de hacha, a large black scallop that's one of the most prized species in the Gulf of California. Years of overfishing had depleted the area's fish and seafood, and Belen knew his discovery could change his village's economic future. But reaching the scallops was only the first challenge: Belen would also have to protect it. Originally released in 2022, this is a partnership between FERN and Snap Judgment.

In this episode I'm joined by Constance Squires, author of the 2017 rock novel ‘Live From Medicine Park'. The story follows Ray Wheeler, who arrives in Medicine Park, Oklahoma, with the goal of filming a documentary about the comeback of Lena Wells, a singer whose career got derailed by a bad late-night TV appearance in the 1980s. Ray, known for his philosophy of non-involvement with his subjects, finds himself drawn into Lena's world as he begins to probe into her past. As Ray delves deeper into Lena's story, he uncovers secrets surrounding her band mate Cyril and Lena's son, Gram. Meanwhile, Gram's wife, Jettie, a talented musician herself, struggles to pursue her passion for music in the face of familial disapproval. The novel delves into themes of ambition, identity, and the search for authenticity. In addition to ‘Live From Medicine Park', Constance Squires is the author of the forthcoming novel ‘Low April Sun' from University of Oklahoma Press. She's also the author of the 2012 Oklahoma Book Award-winning novel ‘Along the Watchtower' and the short story collection ‘Hit Your Brights'. Her short fiction has received multiple Pushcart-Prize nominations and other awards and appeared in many prestigious journals, such as the ‘Atlantic', ‘Guernica', ‘The Dublin Quarterly', ‘Shenandoah', and ‘The Rolling Stone 500'. Here are today's:  There are big and important differences between interviewing to report a story, where you're using selected sound bites, and hosting an interview. Celeste was initially dismayed that her vast experience as a reporter hadn't prepared her to sit in that host chair. As a host of a conversation, you have to care about creating a story arc; about the order of your questions; and about the way in which you ask your questions. None of those apply universally to reporting. A lot of what we think is true about good communication doesn't prove to be true. Celeste says her research shows that tactics like making eye contact, saying uh-huh, nodding your head, and even repeating back what you heard – aren't effective. It's sharing perspectives that actually creates a connection, an empathic bond.Learning to communicate well with one another could not be more important – because to communicate well is to survive. One thing that Celeste told me that took my breath away is that it is not true that the human species survived because of some innate higher intelligence. Rather, she said, “The way that we survived is through our communities. If you're messing with one human being, you are almost always messing with more.” To talk with those with whom you disagree, learn their arguments. You need to understand them as well as you know your own. Otherwise, they will dismiss your objection as coming from someone who simply doesn't understand. ***Follow Elaine on LinkedInHelp us find and celebrate today's best hosts!  Who's your Sound Judgment dream guest? STORIES The Writing Is On The Wall When the scariest man in town is arrested for murder, only one lawyer volunteers to represent him... Produced by Joe Rosenberg, sound design by Renzo Gorrio Corrections: In a previous version, McCracken Poston is referred to as both a state senator and state representative.  He was a state representative, not a state senator.  Also, Virginia Ridley is described as having last been seen in public in 1980, 17 years before the events described in this story.  In fact it was in 1970, 27 years before. Audio Branding
How to Be a Good Podcast Host: A Conversation with Elaine Appleton Grant - Part 1

Audio Branding

What makes a good podcast host? That's a question many of us ask! What gives a Podcast its "hostiness" and makes you want to come back for more again and again?“There's almost nothing about hosting and really by implication producing and that, that quality – I did not coin the term 'hostiness,' that comes from I believe PRX many years ago – but it's, it's this ineffable quality that makes us go 'oh, I love listening to Ira Glass,' or Jad Abumrad of Radio Lab, or Anna Sale, or Brené Brown, or whoever we connect with, and different people obviously connect with different hosts. But what is that makes us connect?”-- Elaine Appleton GrantMy next guest has actually been on this podcast before. She's an award-winning journalist, audio producer, and on-air talent who worked for three NPR affiliates before founding Podcast Allies, LLC in 2019. She hosts the podcast Sound Judgment, a master study in great podcast hosting, and I'm certainly honored to have her here. In fact, you might have heard her review of this podcast read out on a recent show. Her show features today's best hosts, and producers, including Glynn Washington, host of Snap Judgment, John Barth, founding producer of Marketplace, Ann Bogel of What Should I Read Next, and Stephanie Wittels Wachs of Last Day. Her production company, Podcast Allies, develops narrative and conversation podcasts for social impact organizations, such as the Environmental Defense Fund and the American Academy of Pediatrics, so her background in audio is pretty extensive. Her name is Elaine Appleton Grant, and I'm looking forward to getting her take on what she feels makes a good podcast and a great host. With all the interesting people she's interviewed, she's bound to have a very informed opinion. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit www.audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available. And if you're getting some value from listening, feel free to spread that around and share it with a friend, along with leaving an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. The Voice of GodAs we start the episode off, the discussion turns straight to podcasting, its storytelling strengths, and the powerful role it plays in audio branding. We talk about her work with John Barth, developer of the famous Moth Radio Hour, and Elaine and I discuss audio trends in everything from television commercials to movie trailers, and how modern audiences have outgrown the classic "voice of God" Hollywood voice-overs. As Elaine puts it, "it's like the end of the newscaster voice." Ways to Get AttentionOur conversation continues with a look at how multi-tasking and our always-on-the-go lifestyle have changed the tone and purpose of advertising. "We're all trying to find ways to get attention," she says. "There are effective ways, there are good ways, there are ways with integrity, and there are ways that you and I might argue are less so." We talk about how this very podcast got its start and the audio trends, both good and not-so-good, that helped inspire its focus on sonic branding. An Ineffable QualityElaine tells us about the start of her podcast Sound Judgment and her search for the true meaning of “hostiness,” a word she borrowed from Jay Bear to describe that perfect chemistry with a host that brings the...
