Imagine suddenly gaining a profound artistic ability or a knack for complex mathematics after a lifetime of having no such skills. This is the reality for individuals experiencing acquired savant syndrome, a rare and extraordinary neurological condition. It often emerges following an injury or illness that affects the brain, unlocking astonishing talents in music, art, or mathematics—talents that were previously dormant. We are more acquainted with individuals who demonstrate brilliance in music, art, calendar calculation, mathematics, and number skills, often associated with developmental disorders like autism. What sets acquired savant syndrome apart is the sudden emergence of these skills in adulthood following specific neurological changes, damage, or illness. In this episode, Dr. Bray discusses Acquired Savant Syndrome and shares three stories of individuals and the research behind why this may be occurring. He will also discuss how you can improve your performance and intellect by doing three simple things. Researchers are learning how incredible and often untapped the potential residing within the human mind is. BRAY “That which you pay attention to you remember and you become.” “Get a good night's rest.” “You learn more from mistakes than from perfection.”
This week Alissa and Britt dive into the wonderful world of ASS, aka Acquired Savant Syndrome. This fascinating syndrome appears in individuals who have had some kind of brain trauma and suddenly, without explanation, acquire incredible talents.Alissa talks about one of the very first documented cases from the late 1800's of Eadweard Muybridge. A tragic stagecoach accident left him with such awful brain trauma he was bleeding from the ears. From that he became a world famous photographer, inventor...and murderer. We fast forward in time where Britt tells the story of Jason Padgett, a karaoke loving beefcake who was tragically mugged in the streets of Tacoma, WA. The brain trauma caused from this encounter left Jason with the ability to visually see mathematics in intricate fractal forms. Britt then shares a little about the Sudden Savant where these gifts appear in individuals instantaneously without any prior brain trauma. A woman can suddenly create amazing art overnight, a man can instantly speak a foreign language fluently and also the piano flawlessly.Alissa wraps up the episode with the horrific and delightful tale of Phineas Gage, a handsome foreman from 1849 who had a three foot tamping iron shoot through his skull and not only survived but lived to tell the tale! These stories make us wonder, do we all have this untapped talent inside us? Can we hone in on these abilities without having major brain trauma? We'll keep you posted if we find out.Support the showRemember to share the podcast with friends and we want to hear your stories! In this special Rhett & Link-only episode, Rhett & Link discuss some of the rare cases of “Acquired Savant Syndrome,” a diagnosis given to someone who sustains a terrible injury to their brain that miraculously unlocks a hidden genius, like the orthopedic surgeon who was struck in the head by lightning and was then able to masterfully play the piano, or the 20 year old Australian who was in a car accident that put him in a coma for one week only to wake up speaking fluent Mandarin. This fascinating conversation leads Rhett & Link to ask the question, does everyone have these hidden abilities buried in their brain, and if so, will we ever be able to unlock them?
