In this episode, our contestants Kaden McElwain, Wize, and Michael tested their knowledge across a variety of fun and challenging topics. From identifying whether certain titles belonged to Bruce Willis movies or Bob Marley songs, to answering questions about historical figures, mainstream television shows, and even fast-food flavors, the stakes were high and the competition fierce. Each contestant brought their unique set of skills and trivia prowess to the table, making for an engaging and entertaining episode.Round 1 kicked off with a game called "Bruce Willis or Bob Marely," where my contestants had to tell me is the title I gave them a Bruce Willis movie or a Bob Marely song. Kaden impressed everyone by correctly identifying "I Shot the Sheriff" as a Bob Marley song and naming Gatorade's origin at the University of Florida. Wize stayed strong by recognizing the iconic title "Die Hard" as a Bruce Willis movie and Michael proved his trivia chops by distinguishing "No Woman, No Cry" as a Bob Marley song. By the end of this round, Kaden was slightly ahead with solid, well-articulated answers, giving him an early lead.In Round 2, the questions shifted towards a fascinating mix of general knowledge and specialized trivia. This round highlighted some of the contestants' deeper knowledge pools. Kaden shared intriguing facts from his college experience, enlightening everyone on Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier." Wize showcased his quick recall, identifying "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Richard Hatch" (the first winner of "Survivor"), which helped him amass additional points. Michael, despite struggling initially with some pop culture questions, gained momentum by correctly naming toys and characters from "Sesame Street," keeping up the competitive spirit of the game.By Round 3, the trivia questions spanned a broader array of topics that challenged the contestants' extensive knowledge. They tackled subjects from celestial events like solar eclipses to architectural giants like Frank Lloyd Wright. Kaden continued his strong performance, correctly answering questions on "The Walking Dead" novel by Robert Kirkman and impressively handling the rapid-fire speed round by naming five jobs kids aspire to have. His consistency and broad knowledge base propelled him ahead, capturing a total of 17 points by the end of the game. Wize and Michael also demonstrated their trivia strength, particularly with Wize correctly timing the launches of major products and shows. As the episode wrapped up, Kaden McElwain emerged victorious with a five-point lead over the other contestants, showcasing not only impressive trivia knowledge but also his activism and aspirations as an autistic college student and writer. My guest today on Specifically for Seniors is a practicing magician, but his story goes way beyond slight of hand and deceptions. Richard Hatch holds two graduate degrees in physics, but found it easier to apparently violate ther laws of physics than to discover them. Dick has always had a fascination with books on magic, but one book, in particular, led him a deeper understanding of the Jewish people during the holocaust. Dick discovered and translated, from the German, a book entitled DIE JUDEN IN DER ZAUBERKUNDST - Jews in Magic published in Berlin in 1933 wirtten by a Jewish author named Gunter Damman. Researching the book, Dick, who is not Jewish, came to a deeper understanding of the plight of the Jewish people during the holocaust which we talk about during the podcast. This is a story you have not heard about the holocaust and one that you must hear.
Our guest Richard Hatch joins us for the hour to talk about magic, as well as his recent translation of the 1933 book 'Die Juden in der Zauberkunst', or 'Jews and Magic,' from a German author killed in the holocaust.
I have always loved art. I began my college career as an artist before moving to journalism, but my fascination has always remained with the visual arts. I love going to museums and when something attracts my attention, I often do deep research into the subject until I have reached satisfaction. One such personal pursuit has been my longtime passion for studying “The Juggler” (aka “The Conjurer”) by Hieronymus Bosch. I have given lectures on this painting to magicians and to museum docents. So imagine my great thrill to meet and to have this meaningful conversation with Dr. Steffen Taut from Dresden who is an expert in ancient magic art. Thanks to an introduction by Richard Hatch at the recent Magic Collectors Expo, we sat down to record a scholarly talk about our mutual passion and more. This should be like listening to a college professor after class talking with one of his students. I know you will learn a lot from this week's episode and I guarantee you'll enjoy it, or you get your money back! View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize During the first half of our conversation, Dr. Taut talks about Djedi, magician to Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), as well as some of the “magic” he created (like severing and restoring the head of a bull, and switching heads between a duck and a chicken), plus how some of the court magicians were less than ethical in their conduct. Dr. Taut also goes into some detail about the Westcar Papyrus which has only been discovered some 200 years ago but tells us so much about Egyptian magic in Pharaoh's courts. The second part of our chat goes into the 1502 painting by Hieronymus Bosch known to us today as “The Conjurer.” There is a lot of symbolism in this painting and an interesting history of what was going on with the Church at the time that led to Bosch creating this painting. So, if you ask me reality TV, as awful and cringey and addictive and delicious as it is, has been monumental in increasing queer visibility in tv and film. Back in the late 90s/early 00s when reality tv was in its infancy, there were a lot of gay ‘characters' (for want of a better term) that were cast on these shows as (I think) a bit of a shock tactic… And what TV executives maybe didn't anticipate was that audiences warmed to these people, and were rooting for them, and actively invested in their success. And, as a result, that made the aforementioned TV Execs a little less scared about including queer characters in other shows... Which brings us to today's guest. Now, everything I've just said definitely applies to this man. He was the very first winner of the reality TV juggernaut ‘Survivor' all the way back in the year 2000. He became an overnight star because of his antics on the island, which included his comfort with being naked. But, long before he found fame he was a bartender at Lost and Found, a gay bar that was found in Washington DC. We got together to talk all about the bar, and along the way we discuss body image, THAT tv show, and being on the hunt for ‘guile'. Do you have any memories of Lost and Found, or clubbing from your own scene that you want to share? Fire up the Tiki torches and pass the Doritos. With Survivor 45 upon us, who better to deliver the scoop than Murtz Jaffer. Murtz's day job is as Associate Producer of Global's The Morning Show. He's also well known as the world's foremost expert on reality TV, traveling to countless final episode tapings of many reality shows and attending and hosting multiple cast parties. For this season of Survivor, Murtz has scouted the field and knows the 17 new contestants and one returning player vying for the million dollar prize. Who does he like to take the new title? So far, it's not the one Canadian in the field, a man from Vancouver named Keleb Gebrewold. Jaffer salutes Survivor for continuing to diversify the cast, both in terms of race and age. He assesses whether or not the original winner, Richard Hatch, would stand a chance 22 years later on the new edition. In this thought-provoking episode, Noah and Aidan take a deep dive into a darker aspect of reality TV, examining the stories of individuals who have crossed the line from fame to scandal. From Mike Sorrentino's legal troubles post-Jersey Shore, to Abby Lee Miller's dance drama on Dance Moms, Aaryn Gries' controversial behavior post-Big Brother, Richard Hatch's tax evasion ordeal following Survivor, Brittish Williams' financial woes on Basketball Wives that led to charges being released the day this episode released. Of course they end on the spectacle that was Todd and Julie Chrisley's legal battles on Chrisley Knows Best, the hosts explore the shocking tales that rocked the reality TV landscape. But this episode isn't just about the stories themselves; Noah and Aidan also delve into the question of why so many reality stars find themselves entangled in fraudulent activities. Is it the instant fame, the pressure to maintain a certain lifestyle, or the blurred lines between reality and fiction that contribute to these scandals? The hosts engage in an insightful discussion on the psychological and societal factors that may lead reality stars down the path of deception. Through engaging analysis and insightful commentary, Noah and Aidan navigate the complexities of these reality star scandals, offering perspectives on the impacts these events have on their careers, reputations, and the larger reality TV ecosystem. They also explore how these scandals shed light on broader themes of authenticity, personal responsibility, and the fine line between entertainment and real life. Tune in to this eye-opening episode of On a Real Note as Noah and Aidan uncover the truth behind reality TV's fraud-related scandals, providing thought-provoking insights into the reasons behind these unfortunate events and their impact on both the individuals involved and the genre as a whole. Survivor legend and longtime Philadelphia sports fan Gervase Peterson visits the Jack Vita Show to preview Super Bowl LVII, talk Philly sports, and reflect on his time on reality television. Back in 2000, Gervase competed on the first season of Survivor, Survivor: Borneo. It was a national phenomenon. 53 million people tuned in to the show's season finale, where Richard Hatch was awarded the million dollar prize. The show was such a huge success. It laid the groundwork for the franchise to create 42 more seasons, and counting, as Survivor has been on the air for over 22.5 years. Cast members from the first season became household names overnight, rubbing elbows with A-list celebrities at red carpet events. Gervase discusses his time on Survivor and what the ride was like after the show aired. What drew him to Survivor, what was his strategy, and why didn't the Pagong tribe come out on top of Tagi? Gervase shares how he formed an alliance on Pagong, but was unable to get his tribe to vote together after the merge. Gervase also tells the story of how Pagong tried to vote out Jeff Probst at their very first tribal council! Later, Gervase discusses his Philadelphia sports fandom. The Phillies are coming off their first World Series appearance since 2009, and the Eagles will be playing against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday. It's the first time that both the Eagles and Phillies have played for a championship in the same year since 1980; and only the second time in Philadelphia history. Gervase previews the Super Bowl and talks some NFL. He shares his thoughts on the 2022 Eagles, led by Jalen Hurts and his prediction for the big game. Gervase talks Phillies, 76ers and Flyers, while he's at it. 13 years after competing on Survivor: Borneo, Gervase returned to Survivor, competing on the show's 27th season, Survivor: Blood vs. Water. Gervase finished third on Blood vs. Water, surviving all 39 days, but coming up short of the million dollar prize. Gervase talks about what it was like coming out of retirement and returning to reality television. It's an episode you won't want to miss!
