On September 13th, 1848, a dynamite blast rocketed a 43-inch long, 13-pound iron bar completely through the skull of 25-year-old railway worker Phineas Gage. It landed some eighty feet away, covered in Phineas' blood and brains. And after a few minutes, Phineas got up, started talking, walked over to an oxcart, rode it to the hotel where he was staying, sat on the porch and waited to speak with a doctor. Not long after the doctor arrived, he vomited and more of his brain fell out of his head. And he just... kept... talking... For Merch and everything else Bad Magic related, head to: https://www.badmagicproductions.com

Functional Health Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2024 35:06

Episode Summary: In this illuminating episode of Functional Health Radio, host Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves into the concerning trends of declining life expectancy and rising chronic disease rates in the United States. With a powerful narrative that highlights statistics from the CDC and the World Economic Forum, the episode serves as a wake-up call to the healthcare system's dire need for preventive strategies and well-being-oriented models. Dr. Hieshetter addresses the significant impact on the health of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), distinguishing it from traditional medical laser applications. She explains the different classes of lasers and their medical applications, focusing on the potential of Class II low-level lasers in enhancing the body's healing capabilities. Dr. Hieshetter also discusses the concept of hormesis and its importance in understanding the therapeutic use of lasers. Key Takeaways: The life expectancy in the United States has been declining, which, coupled with increasing rates of chronic diseases in children, calls for an urgent revamp of the healthcare system. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a promising, non-invasive treatment that can accelerate the body's healing process and manage various conditions without the risks associated with higher-class lasers. Dr. Kristin Hieshetter distinguishes between the different classes of lasers, emphasizing the safe application of Class II low-level lasers. The principle of hormesis is crucial in LLLT, as it represents the fine balance needed for optimal dosing—where too much or too little can be ineffective or harmful. Inspiring case studies demonstrate the profound impact of LLLT in improving conditions as diverse as broken bones, post-operative pain, chronic pain management, and even stroke recovery. Notable Quotes: "Life expectancy of the United States of America fell for both men and women." "Forbes magazine said that the future of healthcare is to collectively transform the existing system from treatment-based recovery to prevention and well-being." "With low-level lasers, it's not about power, and it's not depth of penetration. These are not surgical procedures." "Photons are those little energized packets of light that, when applied to living systems, trigger photochemical changes within cells responsive to photons." "If we can change brains, we can change pain and pain perception. This is where it gets fun." Resources: The podcast does not explicitly mention any URLs or social media handles, but interested listeners can refer to the website of Erchonia (www.erchonia.com) as it was discussed in relation to preferred laser devices by Dr. Kristin Hieshetter. Readers may also look into "The Brain's Way of Healing" by Norman Doidge for an in-depth exploration of healing through low-level laser therapy. Tune in to the full episode of Functional Health Radio with Dr. Kristin Hieshetter to discover transformative health insights and learn about the future of healthcare through preventative measures and innovative treatments like low-level laser therapy. The MisFitNation Show chat with Danielle Matthews Brain Trauma Survivor, Renowned Public Speaker, ASEA Diamond Executive Welcome to our Top It Off Tuesday show this week.  We are glad you are with us. This is a great chat with Danielle Matthews At the age of 23 Danielle was hit by a drunk driver and sustained a life-altering injury to her brain. The medical world said there was no hope of recovery & told her to accept this life as her “new normal”. Although her body was physically impaired, her spirit was strong & she refused to believe their diagnoses. Her mind was determined to recover…and she did! Whether a patient will ultimately recover from an unconscious state after brain injury isn't easy to predict– yet. But Dr. Jan Claassen is working to change that. He describes the staggering revelations of his study on Cognitive Motor Dissociation, and how his team used a combination of widely available diagnostic tools and open source machine learning algorithms, to detect signs of consciousness in seemingly unconscious patients. Dr. Claassen also discusses his ongoing RECONFIG study, in which he hopes to refine tools that could predict the likelihood of recovery in patients following brain injury. For more information visit nyp.org/Advances

Few people have as much hands-on experience with the many sides of mental health work as today's guest, Dr. Judy Ho.  As a triple-board certified clinical and forensic neuropsychologist, Dr. Ho has evaluated maximum security prison inmates, served as an expert witness in criminal trials, works as a tenured associate professor at Pepperdine University – and goes to therapy herself.  In this episode, Dr. Ho shares about emigrating from Taiwan as a child, the differences between men's and women's love styles, why people settle in relationships, and the challenges of working in the criminal justice system as a woman.  “My supervisors [were] like, ‘Why do you wanna be an expert witness in criminal cases?' I'm like, ‘Well, I think it's interesting. And I think I can help.' And one of my supervisors who is a woman was like, ‘Take it from somebody who worked there for five years in the beginning of my career – it is not a walk in the park.' But it's never a comfortable environment. Sometimes it's a maximum security prison and it's really tough. You have to be escorted everywhere, including to the bathroom. All of your liberties are taken away, at least temporarily. And I'm not saying that that's anywhere near the liberties that [the inmates] lose, but it's like even just that tiny taste of it is [difficult].” – Dr. Ho (20:42)  Dr. Ho also talks about the benefits of therapy for everybody, and why she receives counseling herself as a mental health practitioner.  “Some of my clients say, ‘Well, I don't feel like I need therapy. I don't know why I'm here.' You know what? Everybody needs therapy, probably. It might not be everybody's cup of tea, but I hope that it's not because you feel like there has to be something majorly wrong with you to go to therapy, you know?” – Dr. Ho (37:29)   In This Episode (02:05) The education required in order to be triple-board certified (05:07) Humor as a healing tool  (11:22) Dr. Ho's experience as an expert witness in the judicial system  (17:09) The ups and downs of evaluating maximum security prison inmates  (21:24) How the Big Sister Little Sister program shaped Dr. Ho's passion for psychology (23:57) The link between brain trauma, aging and psychology (27:43) Emigrating from Taiwan and adapting to the American school system  (37:29) Why Dr. Ho goes to therapy as a mental health professional (41:49) Why people settle in relationships (43:45) The differences between men's and women's love styles (49:14) Dr. Ho's experience working with multicultural, same-sex and gender-diverse couples   Our Guest Dr. Judy Ho is a licensed and triple board-certified clinical and forensic neuropsychologist. Dr. Zimmerman's passion for brain health stems from his personal experiences with his wife, who, after two car accidents, discovered that she had been unknowingly suffering from symptoms similar to those of his patients. It is essential to recognize that many people have undiagnosed head injuries from accidents or sports that may be impacting their health. There are two categories of head trauma symptoms: Immediate symptoms from the time of injury, such as brain fog, headaches, mood changes, and word-find challenges. Resiliency challenges within the body, similar to autoimmune issues, where you can no longer tolerate things you used to. The brain-body connection is a two-way street and can result in various symptoms, including: Fatigue Headaches ADHD and focus issues Depression Anxiety Sleep disturbances Memory issues Trouble with word-find Evaluating brain health goes beyond imaging; we must assess functionality. Injuries can cause the brain to not connect as it should, leading to an energy crisis. The brain uses 25-30% of the body's energy, and inflammation can worsen this energy deficiency. Assessing eye movements, tracking targets, and shifting focus points can be essential indicators of brain health.Advanced testing methods, such as video oculography or video nystagmography, are recommended for a thorough evaluation. Brain injuries often make individuals more visually dominant, which means balance is greatly improved with eyes open. Simple balance testing techniques can be used to assess the brain's connection.Factors like stress can lead to poor sleep, blocking the glymphatic system - the brain's cleanup process. This results in a "toxic soup" within the brain. The worse the inflammation and energy crisis, the worse the brain's connectivity, which impacts each aspect of health. There is a direct connection between brain health and autoimmunity. Gut health is essential for healing autoimmunity, but alterations in brain health can impact gut functions like acid and enzyme production and motility. If activities like reading or computer work tire you more than physical exertion, consider testing for brain health. One Step to TakeCheck your balance with eyes open and closed on both firm and soft surfaces to get a better understanding of your brain's connectivity and health.
