This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt discuss the latest Stephen King adaptation, scratch that, the latest adaptation remake. The film sparking our interest this time is ‘Firestarter'. We've long been supporters of remaking bad films, and John Lester's original is far from a classic. So does ‘Firestarter' light us up? Then CageFest continues with ‘Vengeance: A Love Story'. Nic Cage is a cop on the edge, who crosses the line when of punks get off. Sounds awesome. So is it? There's the rambunctious rundown of the big releases Physical Media, featuring the Streaming and Straight to DVD Picks of the Week! Then Matt and Chris close out the show by sharing their 5 Favorite Stephen King Movie Scares! Haunted cars, rabid dogs, and demonic clowns. Will The Dark Tower make the list? More like Dork Tower. With the king apprised of the dangers to his domain, our heroes take matters into their own hands to catch a traitor. Azlo and Tokas combine vertically. Shabba and Stripey share a moment.
Failed astrophysicist John Kovalic certainly landed on his feet, becoming not only a fantastic cartoonist and board game designer, but the creator of Dork Tower and Apples To Apples, illustrator of Munchkin Shakespeare, the crafty current chronicler of geek culture. On our recent trip to Madison Wisconsin, we got to sit down and talk with John about the rise of geek culture, apologies to former professors, humble roots at the UW-Madison student newspaper, the wonders of crowd-funding, skipping Advanced Micro Economics, multiple interests across the arts and the sciences, how autobiographical comics aren't, being directed by Dominic Dromgoole, the horrible dangers of Monopoly, and the startling and slightly bittersweet success of Apples to Apples. (Length 26:27)

Munchkin is a dedicated deck card game by Steve Jackson Games, written by Steve Jackson and illustrated by John Kovalic, that has a humorous take on role-playing games. In this installment: It's the World of Dorkness! The Munchkins are now vampires . . . and werewolves . . . and changelings. Bash through the haunted house and slay the monsters. The OTHER monsters. You can't slay your fellow munchkins, but you can curse them, send foes at them, and take their stuff. Of course . . . This is a stand-alone game, which (of course) can be combined with other Munchkin games. And it's illustrated by John Kovalic. OF COURSE. See Igor, Gilly, and all the other Dork Tower characters in their munchkin-vampire finery . . . So bring along your Coffin (+3!) and wield The Sword Of Beheading People Just Like In That Movie. Face foes like the Banshee, the Heck Hounds, and the dreaded Were-Muskrat. Smite them all, and be the first to Level 10 . . . Now in Full Color! The material presented here is my original creation, intended for use with the Munchkin system from Steve Jackson Games. This material is not official and is not endorsed by Steve Jackson Games.
