Your Tin Men of trivia are back for round two of their epic deep dive into the making of the most watched movie in history. On this episode, you’ll learn about the hellish production, which ended up injuring, maiming (or, at very least, psychologically harming) at nearly every member of the cast. The Scarecrow was nearly set on fire — but he was saved from his costume made of asbestos. The Wicked Witch actually WAS set on fire, and the frantic crew had to scrub down her freshly-burned skin with alcohol. A “heavily medicated” Judy Garland was emotionally abused by everyone from the studio execs on down — all for the name of MOVIE MAGIC! The wildly-expensive lightening caused brown-outs all over LA, the tornado sequence nearly choked the SFX team, and then there were the poor prop masters who made fake glass out of liquid mercury. Between the accidentals, constantly revolving cast of writers and directors, and the outbreak of World War II, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ should have been a complete and utter disaster. How did it become a top tier classic, with special resonance within the LGBTQ community? Why does Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' sync up so well with the film? Did a distraught Munchkin actor really hang themselves in the middle of a scene? Take a listen, and all the answers will be revealed! Follow the flying monkeys of facts down the Yellow Brick Road for an episode that’s Toto-ly packed with 'Wizard of Oz' trivia! In part one of the TMI’s guy’s epic two-fer on children’s cinematic classic, you’ll hear all about the origins of the original book and how author L. Frank Baum’s (who, it’s worth noting, was bullied by theater people) was inspired by office supplies, family tragedy and his childhood nightmares to develop the magical series. You'll also learn why MGM greenlit the budget-busting production to compete with the world beating success of Walt Disney's 'Snow White,' the biggest blockbuster in history at the time. This episode focuses on the cast of 'Oz,' nearly all of whom were tortured physically and psychologically. Special shout-out to original Tin Man Buddy Ebsen, who nearly died due to his wildly unsafe makeup. There's also the truly disgusting costumes required for the Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion, and the trials and tribulations of being a Munchkin on the set. (Spoiler: there were no Munchkin orgies.) The TMI duo also explain why The Wicked Witch of the West was actually the loveliest person in the production, why Toto is buried under LA's 101 freeway, and why the Ruby Slippers led to a 13-year FBI manhunt. Plus, prepare to get really bummed out when you learn about Judy Garland's childhood and all the drugs she was (allegedly) being fed by her mom. Yes, the movie making experience was less than wonderful for the cast, but the episode's pretty great. An episode that rolls the dice on a favorite autistic pastime! Here's what's in store for today's episode: * In this episode, Matt and Angela dive into the world of board games—a beloved pastime within the autistic community.* Did you know that, according to research, only 1% of neurotypicals enjoy board games, compared to 7% of autistic individuals? This fascinating statistic highlights how board games resonate as a unique and cherished hobby within the autistic community.* Autistic individuals often gravitate toward board games because of their clear structure, logical rules, and engaging systems.* Board games are often seen as a form of "social lubricant," providing a structured way to interact and connect with others in a comfortable and low-pressure environment.* Moreover, board games are often recommended for fostering autism-affirming social skills, providing a structured and enjoyable way to practice communication, collaboration, and turn-taking.* Our hosts explore the different types of board games—ranging from logic-based games like Catan and bottom-up processing-heavy games like Munchkin, to Star Wars-related and adjacent games, and beyond.* Games help autistic individuals with the concept of turn-taking by providing clear structure. In most board games, it is easy to see when your turn begins and ends, what actions you can take, and the order in which you can do them.* These clearly defined objectives, roles, and turns help provide stability to our brains, creating a predictable environment that can reduce anxiety and improve focus.* We discuss the close alignment between SPINs (Special Interests) and board games, exploring how both help us achieve monotropic focus, leading to improved emotional regulation.* In addition, we also discuss the emotional aspects of board games, focusing on how they help teach fairness and honesty through structured interactions and clear rules.* Games provide autistic brains with the pattern recognition we crave, offering a healthy outlet that helps prevent doomscrolling or catastrophizing, and instead fosters positive focus and engagement.* Board games can bring out the best in us autistic folks, serving as a way to connect through our SPINs and transform our tendency to catastrophize into a positive, focused experience.* In addition, board games are sensory fun and stimtastic, offering a tactile and engaging experience that can be both soothing and stimulating for autistic individuals.* Board games offer a structured, sensory-rich experience that fosters social skills, emotional regulation, and focus, while providing a healthy outlet for pattern recognition and creativity, all while allowing autistic individuals to connect with their SPINs and engage in stimulating, enjoyable play.“They [board games] will be at the game night and there's reduced social pressure. There's a shared focus. There's less anxiety because especially if you know the game, the goal is to play the game and then if you meet people, awesome.” - Angela“So if you want to meet new people [through board games], it's so much better to meet them when you are emotionally regulated and you know what the rules are. Not to say you won't have a meltdown because meat bodies and phone calls and text messages and who knows, but you've got a better chance of meeting someone as your best self.” - Angela“The intricacy of the names of the moves and the artistry of chess, that is a purely autistic creation.” - AngelaIn this episode, we delve into the unique role board games play within autistic culture. From their structured rules and logical systems to their ability to foster social connection in a comfortable way, we discuss why board games hold a special place in the community. Every parent does it – but doesn't want to admit it. We compare our child to other children or even their siblings. We also know that our “comparing” comes from a deep place of concern. We worry: Are they hitting important developmental milestones? Is there a problem? Maybe everything will be OK eventually? Lynn and Justin explore this “secret” parenting topic with Dr. Tina Bryson, a psychotherapist, mother, and the co-author of two of the most definitive books on child development and parenting – The New York Times bestseller “The Whole-Brain Child” and “No-Drama Discipline.” Dr. Bryson gives us the practical guidance that every parent needs when we dare to compare. Then, in our Parenting Story of the Day, we'll hear from a mom who noticed that her son was different from other kids. What did she do? She embraced it. Winning is a big deal to kids – whether it's on the soccer field or racing their sibling to the car door. And with big competition comes big emotions. So how best to navigate when your child loses – or wins for that matter? Sam Weinman, author of “Win at Losing: How Our Biggest Setbacks Can Lead to Our Greatest Gains” joins Lynn and Justin with practical, healthy strategies for parents to help their little ones deal with competition. Tools that we can all use from the toddler years into adulthood. In our Parenting Story of the Day, we hear how Kelsey Demers, a mom of seven, uses family game night to teach her children bigger life lessons–resilience, critical thinking, and the value of spending real “facetime” around the family table. You can also watch this podcast on YouTube and reach us at podcast@munchkin.com. Sam Weinman / IG / FB / LinkedIn Author Sam Weinman was inspired to pen “Win at Losing: How Our Biggest Setbacks Can Lead to Our Greatest Gains,” because his two sons both struggled with losing. Wanting to show them that losing has real benefits, he started on a journey to talk to people—famous and otherwise—about how they handled a notable loss, and what they learned from it. Weinman is the digital editorial director at Golf Digest and also covered golf and the NHL for The Journal News in Westchester, N.Y. He wrote for numerous publications including USA Today, Golf World, Yahoo! Sports, ESPN the Magazine, and Sports Illustrated. He has been honored with multiple awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors and Golf Writers Association of America writing contests. Kelsey Demers / IG / TikTok Kelsey and Adam and their seven kids love to play board games! So much so they created the website TheTableTopFamily.com to help everyone find the perfect game to inspire their family to spend more quality time together. They believe that there is nothing more fun than spending an evening together laughing and connecting over the shared experience of playing a game. COME ON!Let's jump in!Embracing my Love for StationeryBefore I spill the stationery secret, let me share a story. I've talked about this before, and while some might tire of it, stationary lovers will surely enjoy it.I used to live near the beach, making it easy to bike to Officeworks, a big stationery store here in Australia.I had this electric tricycle with a basket for my purchases at the front and another at the back for Munchkin, my dog. We often stopped at Officeworks during our rides. I once told Davey I needed to buy some Post-its.He sassily remarked that I had just bought some a few weeks ago, and asked how many I really needed.BUT... Here's the thing: I used those Post-its during a retreat to map out a course and some key tasks, and those very actions being implemented, and that course being mapped out... well it all turned into a $75,000 launch! Eventually, those Post-its helped me make $200,000.Needless to say, from then on, every time we rode near Officeworks, Davey would ask if I needed more Post-its! This little system of mine is the stationery secret behind making millions.Creating a system to turn stationery into incomeIt's not just about buying loads of Post-it notes. It's about creating a method to manage yourself and your tasks. This stationery system keeps me focused on generating income and staying productive. Tasks I've mapped on Post-its over the past decade have brought in millions for my business.Let me know your thoughts via our Text FanMail!

Children cry, it's a fact. We hate to hear our kids cry but saying “stop crying” isn't going to help. In fact, it can be harmful. Rachel Tuchman, a Mental Health Counselor with a speciality in early childhood development, explains to Lynn and Justin that demanding children “stop crying” can squash their emotions and lead to big issues later in life. Rachel provides concrete, actionable advice on what to say instead and how to react when kids cry in public. In our Parenting Story of the Day, Irina Gonzalez explains how she responded when a family member told her - 3 month old baby - that men don't cry. Rachel Tuchman / Blog / Instagram / Facebook / YouTube Rachel Tuchman is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with over 15 years of experience specializing in childhood development. She has worked with many diverse populations including kids and adults with developmental delays, child behavior issues, overwhelmed parents looking for skills and support and teens struggling with the pressures of adolescence and life. How do we get our child from the playground to the car or from dinner to bed without a tantrum? For kids, going from one thing to the other is tough. They get upset and we get upset. But once we recognize that these are daily transitions and they happen throughout our lives, we can work with our children (and on ourselves) to lessen the difficulty and set them up with great life-skills. Dr. Rebecca Schrag-Hershberg, Clinical Psychologist and author of the “Tantrum Survival Guide,” joins Lynn and Justin for an insightful conversation about easy and actionable ways to transition children from one activity to another. And in our Parenting Story of the Day, Marie Holmes shares the touching story of how she and her son got through the really big transition of changing schools.
