Oscar voters will no longer be able to skip watching some of the nominated films. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Monday announced that members will from now on be required to watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round of Oscar voting. Up until now, Oscar voters had only been encouraged to watch the nominees and vote in categories they felt qualified in. But in recent years, what films get watched by academy members has been increasingly seen as a significant factor in what wins. At the same time, the publication of anonymous Oscar ballots has often featured members confessing that they didn’t get around to watching some notable films or not finishing lengthier nominees. In other news — many appearances by the faces of the entertainment industry, from filmmakers of all different backgrounds, the Criterion Closet will get an extended appearance in Los Angeles, as a mobile version of the closet will be available for cinephiles to visit. With more than 1200 films in its official collection of Blu-rays, the Criterion Collection has been one of the leading physical media distributors. So with the closet arriving in Los Angeles, we thought it’d be worth checking in on the physical media industry with Dominic Patten, senior editor & tv critic at Deadline. We’ll also hear from Peter Rainer, who add their insights and discuss their favorite physical media. With files from the Associated Press

Nintendo is assessing the tariff situation, and made a statement that the Switch 2 price was not made with the tariffs in mind. The 46% tariffs on Vietnam were paused for 90 days, but the 10% tariff went into effect. If you ask Google and Reddit, the physical version of Mario Kart World is $90 in the US - however, if you ask Nintendo, it is only $80. The confusion is because the internet is broken. Then we ask the multi-million dollar question - how could Mario Kart World's price have been lowered? You probably wouldn't like the answer as a consumer - but it's a reckoning a lot of AAA titles that are feature-filled or take innovation and risks will have to come to grips with. Then we talk to Rob about the price of everything gaming related, even though our wages haven't gone up to pay for it.

This episode explores the quiet demise of physical media in music, film, and video games—and what we've lost in the transition to the digital age. From the ritual of unwrapping a new CD to the thrill of midnight game launches, physical media once grounded our entertainment in something tangible. Now, with streaming and downloads dominating the landscape, ownership has given way to access—and permanence to convenience. What are your thoughts?

In 1958, my sister took me to a Jerry Lee Lewis concert. The next day, we visited a record shop, where she bought Great Balls of Fire for $0.67—my first encounter with physical media. Over time, I collected albums, read liner notes, and embraced VHS, CDs, and tapes. Now, we stream everything, but we don't own it. Music is compressed, manipulated, and auto-tuned. I sold my vinyl but kept my CDs—and I cherish them. Frank Sinatra's Strangers in the Night was auto-tuned. What the hell? I'll stick to my originals. #PhysicalMedia #MusicLover #Vinyl #CDs #StreamingDilemma

It's a brand new segment! We have been exploring ways to produce more content outside of the main show and we've come up with a few new concepts that we think you'll enjoy. The first up is something we are calling Joe's Shelf, where Joe will pick a movie from his physical media collection (must be PHYSICAL MEDIA) that Ryan has ideally never seen. The two of us will then discuss. As Ryan says in the episode "Pretty groundbreaking." These episodes will give us some freedom to explore more mainstream/classic films that wouldn't work on the main show. It's also a chance for us to dive into some of the films that have been sent to the Patreon PO box, as was the case with the movie featured on this inaugural episode - Sharky's Machine! This is pretty much a pilot episode and we'll keep ironing out the format as we go on. The current plan is to do two of these a month, one released publicly, the other a Patreon exclusive. We also have another new segment coming soon that Ryan will control the picks for that is currently available only on Patreon at: www.patreon.com/almostcultclassics. Once considered obsolete, the format has reestablished its presence in the music sales market, attracting collectors, audiophiles, and younger generations discovering the medium for the first time. On this episode of Music Evolves, host Sean Martin is joined by Larry Jaffee, journalist, author, and co-founder of Making Vinyl, to explore the past, present, and future of vinyl records. The History and Evolution of VinylLarry Jaffee's passion for music began early, shaped by childhood experiences with radio, tape recorders, and eventually, his first turntable. His journey mirrors that of recorded music itself—from early reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes to the dominance of LPs. Jaffee explains how vinyl records initially took hold in the 1940s, replacing fragile shellac 78s, and how the industry saw its first format war between Thomas Edison's cylinders and Emil Berliner's flat disc records.By the 1980s, however, vinyl was rapidly losing ground to compact discs, and later, digital streaming. The shift was largely driven by convenience, corporate pressure, and the record industry's aggressive push for higher-priced CDs. As labels stopped accepting returns on LPs, retailers began phasing them out. Yet, as Jaffee points out, the format never truly disappeared. Audiophile labels, collectors, and independent artists kept vinyl alive, setting the stage for its resurgence decades later. The Vinyl RevivalVinyl's comeback has been driven by multiple factors, including nostalgia, superior sound quality, and a renewed appreciation for physical media. Jaffee highlights Record Store Day, the annual event launched in 2008 that played a key role in reigniting public interest in records. Starting with just a dozen exclusive releases and a high-profile in-store appearance by Metallica, Record Store Day quickly gained traction, attracting major labels and leading to hundreds of special vinyl releases each year.Independent artists and labels have also embraced vinyl as a way to connect with fans and generate revenue. Unlike streaming, where payouts are minimal, selling a physical album—especially directly to fans—can be a major source of income for musicians. Jaffee notes that younger generations are playing a key role in sustaining the trend, with millennial and Gen Z listeners making up a growing portion of vinyl buyers.Sound Quality and the Vinyl ExperienceOne of the biggest debates in music is whether vinyl actually sounds better than digital formats. While some argue that CDs and high-resolution digital files offer cleaner sound, vinyl enthusiasts appreciate the warmth, depth, and dynamic range that analog recordings provide. The experience of playing a record—removing it from the sleeve, placing it on the turntable, and carefully dropping the needle—also adds a tactile, immersive element that digital music lacks.Jaffee discusses how vinyl manufacturing has improved in recent years, with pressing plants refining quality control and experimenting with new formulations, including colored and marbled vinyl. However, the resurgence has also exposed industry bottlenecks, with pressing plants struggling to keep up with demand. The Future of Vinyl: Sustainability and InnovationAs vinyl production increases, concerns about its environmental impact have also grown. Traditional records are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a material that Greenpeace considers among the most harmful plastics. Jaffee is now involved in efforts to create plant-based, sustainable alternatives, and his team recently produced their first eco-friendly record using a new biodegradable material. With new pressing plants opening, younger audiences embracing the format, and innovations in sustainability, vinyl's future looks promising. While digital music remains dominant, the continued demand for physical media proves that records are more than just a nostalgic novelty—they offer an experience that streaming cannot replicate.Listen to the Full EpisodeLarry Jaffee's deep knowledge of music history, industry shifts, and the cultural significance of vinyl makes this an essential episode for music fans. Tune in to Music Evolves to hear more about the making of records, the role of packaging and design, and what's next for the format that refuses to fade.SponsorsAre you interested in sponsoring this show or running ad placement in the podcast?Sponsorship
In this episode, Scott Orr interviews Dean Harada, the founder of Lo'ihi Records, a new Hawaiian record label focused on avant-garde and progressive music from Hawaii. PRESENTED BY GROOVER - http://geni.us/groover USE COUPON CODE: OTHERRECORDLABELSVIP for 10% OFF! Here's what we discussed in this interview... The Meaning Behind Lo'ihi Records The label's name comes from the Lo'ihi seamount, a rising underwater volcano near Hawaii, symbolizing the growth of a unique music scene. The vision is to support artists who push creative boundaries rather than catering to tourist-driven Hawaiian music. Challenges of Running a Record Label The post-release phase has been one of the biggest challenges, with marketing and sustaining momentum after an album launch being particularly difficult. Social media has been a learning curve for Dean, as he had no prior experience before starting the label. Time management is crucial in balancing label operations with artistic passion. Philosophy and Mission of the Label Lo'ihi Records aims to showcase music that is endemic to Hawaii—unique and growing from the local scene rather than fitting into traditional or commercial Hawaiian music stereotypes. Dean emphasizes legacy building, inspired by his experience working on a historic Hawaiian fish pond restoration, knowing that some things take generations to fully materialize. The Importance of Physical Media & Vinyl Scott and Dean discuss how vinyl records act as cultural artifacts, lasting for decades and creating connections across generations. Dean sees vinyl releases as a way to preserve music beyond digital platforms. Overcoming Industry Hurdles Unlike mainstream Hawaiian music, avant-garde and experimental artists in Hawaii struggle to find platforms and audiences. Lo'ihi Records seeks to change that by fostering a local music community that supports progressive sounds. Marketing & Selling Vinyl Scott shares insights on post-release strategies, emphasizing that record labels need to treat each release like a product launch that requires continued promotion. They discuss the challenge of selling vinyl and the mindset shift needed to focus on long-term marketing rather than just new releases. This episode is an insightful look at the unique vision behind Lo'ihi Records and the realities of starting a record label in an unconventional market.
There are lots of stereotypes that come with being a member of Gen Z, but few are truer than the idea of us having a poor attention span, being obsessed with TikTok, and hating to consume media if it’s not in a short-form package. On her way to solve this crisis of media illiteracy that has consumed our generation is self-proclaimed “media literate hottie,” and today’s guest, Kelsey Russell. Kelsey is an entrepreneur, influencer, and podcaster with a goal of using print media as the vehicle for promoting better emotional regulation when interacting with news. This mantra comes to life on her TikTok page of nearly 100K followers, where she dynamically reads different newspapers and magazines to her audience. In our conversation today, Kelsey and I discussed how to peep which news outlets are credible and which ones aren’t, why it’s important to continue to engage with print media as opposed to all digital, and why it may not be wise to get all your news from TikTok.
