In today's episode of the Truth Wanted, Jon the Skeptic and Drew Bekius take a dive into animal rights before realizing the dive was deep enough to encounter octopi of potential alien origins.Connor in UT would like to know the hosts' opinions on animal rights being an extension of human rights. Jon mentions the struggle associated with soy allergies when going to a plant based diet. As Drew emphasizes the importance of this conversation, he describes the need to exercise mindfulness and gratefulness towards other beings on the planet. What is the best option for animal testing? How can the pain and harm be minimized?Dee in IA says that farmed animals in the future need to reside with local farmers where farm animals are bred for food. If dogs are bred for fighting, does that make it right? What does ethical farming mean and how do we explore these practices? Would it be cool for aliens to come down and have a human farm because we are so tasty? If an animal is bred for a certain purpose, what would make that purpose ethical? Though Industry and employment are important, they are not the right reasons to keep this in practice. Jon in Canada saw a plate move all by itself after having a conversation about ghosts. What is your best explanation for this? How do you go about getting all the information before making the conclusion that it was caused by a ghost? Sometimes taking the position of not knowing is the way to go.John in OH says that he can prove there is no afterlife because the mind is a separate substance from the body and consciousness is a property of the brain that can be turned off. If the mind is a process of the brain that stops when the brain dies, why is this important to theists?Dan in Canada wonders if the awesomeness and weirdness of octopi indicates they might be from other planets. Are there other connections that go beyond this category? How would the disconnect be explained between the animal kingdom and Cephalopods if there are in fact disconnections? How convinced are you that the octopus is not of earth origin?Thank you for tuning in! Kelley Laughlin, our backup host, joins us to close out the show. Timmy had a conversation with Drew Bekius about love, dating, marriage and how he not only had a huge deconstruction as it related to religious faith, but also in his perspectives around Marriage, Sexuality, and Relationships. He is an Author, Humanist, Public Speaker, Atheist and just an over-all great dude. Monogamy has been the relationship catalyst in society to find and have love, a healthy connection, and sometimes a family. Over time, bold formations of love and relationship are trending, shattering the social foundation of monogamy as we know it. Come eavesdrop on Drew Bekius and Jé Exodus Hooper in a conversation about their social… Read More »The Multiverse of Madness and Love: A Discussion About Polyamory with FUS Member Drew Bekius & Rev. Hey there Youtube wanderer. Sit a spell, warm up by the fire, and enjoy another episode of Truth Wanted! This week Dan is joined by former pastor turned humanist author Drew Bekius! This week's Patron of the Week is Richard… just Richard. May you join the ranks of folks like Cher, and be showered with fame, fortune, and enough plastic surgery to keep you looking young well into middle age!Our first caller is Richard (no, not that Richard) from Arizona. He's struggling with a lingering fear of hell, and asks how our hosts got over this hurdle. Drew asks some probing questions, and Dan reminds our caller that this stuff takes time to conquer. Drew recommends finding community, and shares a great analogy to car accidents that seems to help. Be patient with yourself Richard!Isaiah's calling back from Korea, asking if a multiverse could affect the likelihood of a god being real. Short answer, no. Dan and Drew can't see how multiple universes could affect the null hypothesis or make deities more likely. Drew pushes back on the idea that more universes equals greater probability for creator gods, and Dan refutes Isaiah's argument from incredulity. Nature is beautiful, but lots of pretty things we have explanations for don't require sky wizards.Next we have William in Canada, who thinks humanism is just a reimagining of concepts from holy texts. Drew draws a great picture of how those authors then, and people now, construct our moral views through the lens of our experience. Dan simplifies the discussion by pointing out that most people want the same things, regardless of the century they're living in. Is humanism a new iteration of humanity's efforts to build a moral code? Sure, but that's a far cry from a religion. That'll wrap it up for this week folks, join us next week, although it won't be hosted by Ashton Kutcher and Russell Crowe's atheist avatars, it'll still be pretty good. See you then!
When you sincerely believe that god has a perfect plan for your life and a Proverbs 31 wife all lined up for you, the dating scene can be a little bit different. When you lose all of that through divorce and the deconstruction of your faith, night clubs can suddenly seem irrationally intimidating, to say nothing of one night stands. Author and speaker Drew Bekius joins Christy in an intimate conversation about dating and deconstructing and what it really feels like to save your first date until after marriage. Purity culture problems abound, your stories and questions and of course what's turning us on this week on SecX! Drew Bekius war ein evangelikaler Pastor, der sein Leben lang kein einziges atheistisches Buch gelesen hatte. Es war die Beschäftigung mit der Bibel selbst, die ihn schließlich zum Atheisten machte.
Drew Bekius was an evangelical pastor for 12 years before de-converting and leaving his ministry behind. Today, Drew is an open atheist, serving as President of The Clergy Project, after a stint on the Board of Directors as Communications Chair. He blogs at DrewBekius.com and his book, The Rise and Fall of Faith: A God-to-Godless Story for Christians and Atheists, will be available in July of this year. It was an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to talk with Drew …

Kentucky student activist Lydia Mason, whose essay “Breaking The Chains” won FFRF’s David Hudak Memorial Freethinking Students of Color High School Essay Competition, tells us about the challenges of being a minority within a minority in a highly religious state. Then we talk with a former preacher who is now the president of The Clergy Project, Drew Bekius. His new book, which narrates his exodus from the evangelical pulpit, is The Rise and Fall of Faith: A God-to-Godless Story for Christians and Atheists.
Drew Bekius was a true believer. He prayed the “sinner’s prayer” when he was three and was immersed in evangelical Christianity, starting an award-winning ministry in his high school. He became a minister and a leader and he was skilled at the job. But a few years ago, the edifice began to crack. He realized he no longer could believe the things he needed to believe in order to be a minister. Now he no longer holds belief in God or Jesus or the church. He is now a humanist coach and is the president of The Clergy Project. The Clergy Project is online community for former and active religious professionals who no longer hold supernatural beliefs. In many ways Drew is still a minister at heart. He is a caring, thoughtful person who wants to help people overcome stereotypes and to understand each other even when they might not agree. In particular, he wants atheists and Christians to talk to each other. We discuss his journey and his new mission that he outlines in his book, The Rise and Fall of Faith: A God-to-Godless Story for Christians and Atheists.
Like Bart, Drew Bekius is a former Christian minister who stopped believing and left the faith he held for so long. In this episode, Bart and Drew talk about their journey, the view on the other side of faith, the plight of unbelieving clergy, compassion for those in that position and what they're both doing now that they're no longer evangelical pastors.Drew's website can be found at drewbekius.com. Bart can be reached at bartcampolo.org/contact.
This week Cass is in conversation with former pastor, Drew Bekius of The Clergy Project. Drew serves on TCP's Board of Directors and as Chair of the Communications Committee. The Clergy Project’s Mission is to provide support, community, and hope to current and former religious professionals who no longer hold supernatural beliefs. Drew blogs at drewbekius.com and is working on a book tentatively titled “The Rise and Fall of Faith.” EA co-host Bob Pondillo was on vacation when this conversation was taped on June 20th, 2015 so this is just two ex-pastors in conversation.
