Barcelona-born Enric Marco was celebrated as a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, being awarded Catalonia's highest civil distinction, the Creu de Sant Jordi, publicly sharing his experiences and even representing a survivors' association. However in 2005 the historian Benito Bermejo discovered that Marco's life story was a monumental lie. Although he spent time in Germany during World War II, Marco was never held prisoner in Flossenbürg concentration camp as he claimed; in reality he voluntarily worked for the German war machine. Since then a lot has been published on the subject; there is a book by Javier Cercas, two films and endless media reports. But the question still remains - what led Marco to weave such a complicated web of lies? We interview Benito Bermejo about the investigation leading up to Marco's disclosure and learn about the thousands of Catalan Republicans who really were deported during the war and who perished in German concentration camps. Catalan News journalist Cillian Shields sits down with host Beth Cohen to explore the circumstances that led Marco to lie about his past and the historical context which favored the credibility of his story. We also talk to psychologist Dr. Drew Curtis, who specializes in deceit and pathological liars, and draw parallels with cases of other famous imposters. This week's Catalan phrase is ‘sembla mentida' - it seems like a lie. ‘Sembla mentida' that someone would fake being a concentration camp victim… but it actually happened.

We're uncovering the truth about liars on this episode with psychologist and author Drew Curtis, PhD. We discuss pathological liars, why some people lie all the time (especially about insignificant things), and if there are ways to detect a liar. And of course we talk about lies and deception in dating – the point in a relationship where people lie most, the differences between what men and women lie about, the motivations for dishonesty, if you can regain trust after being deceived, and if “once a liar, always a liar” is true. Before Drew joins us, we're talking about Rayna's cowgirl fashion, Ashley's favorite/most random fan encounter, and we're popping off about people taking pics. How can doing something embarrassing in front of people be good for you? This episode begins by explaining how making a fool of yourself can actually have benefits and make you happier. Maybe not in the moment but overall. https://exploringyourmind.com/making-fool-yourself-makes-you-happier/ When you tell a lie, there are consequences – especially if you get caught. Because if you are caught lying, you are now a liar and that can be a difficult label to shake. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Lying is fraught with all kinds of danger. Yet, everyone lies at some point in their life. Here to help you understand why people lie, and some of the consequences of lying you may have never even considered before is Drew Curtis. He is a licensed psychologist in Texas and is on the faculty at Angelo State University. He is author of the book Big Liars: What Psychological Science Tells Us About Lying and How You Can Avoid Being Duped (https://amzn.to/47PmsmP) Not all that long ago, it was only governments that had the money and technology to launch rockets into space. Not anymore. Today private companies are launching rockets and satellites into space almost daily! And ultimately, it is all about money. People like Elon Musk with his company SpaceX are leading the way and there are dozens of other companies collectively trying to conquer space and make a profit. Joining me to explain what is going on here is Ashlee Vance. He wrote a bestselling book about Elon Musk, he is also a feature writer at Bloomberg Businessweek and he is author of the book When the Heavens Went on Sale: The Misfits and Geniuses Racing to Put Space Within Reach (https://amzn.to/44gavDB) You can predict the weather with your morning cup of coffee – sort of. This is likely not the way the National Weather Service does it but the bubbles in your coffee can actually tell you what kind of day it is going to be.
