On a recent episode we talked about the primitive, early days of American heavy metal. This time we're talking about the juiced-up, oil-drenched, muscle-bound glory days of American heavy metal. The United States grabbed the mantle of heavy metal from Europe and made it louder than ever. Trash and hair metal made waves across the globe, and heavy metal was good as hell. We're talking about some of our favorite heavy metal sounds from 1985 to 1989 with Fifth Angel, Sound Barrier, Racer X, Joe Satriani, Dokken, Liege Lord, and much more. On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we share Jas Obrecht's world debut of one of Edward Van Halen's happiest, most memorable interviews. On that special morning — May 20, 1991 — Edward was on top of the world. He was celebrating the birth of his son, Wolfgang… his relationship with Valerie was strong… and he had just finished mixing For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Van Halen's first album in three years. The interview took place in the control room of Edward's expansive 5150 home studio. The console was a perfect snapshot of his world — cigarettes, tools, bottlecaps, a bowl of guitar slides, and Motley Crüe and Led Zeppelin CDs scattered around. “Before we do the interview,” Edward said, “I want you to hear the new album.” He cued up an advance CD of For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, showed Jas the volume slider, and with a grin, said, “Hope ya like it,” before walking out the door. When the album finished, Edward returned, flipped a switch, and lit up two massive rooms behind the control room window — one filled with his guitars and amps, the other with Alex's drum setup. Right then, Jas and Edward launched into the wide-ranging interview you're about to hear. https://youtu.be/pG7e5crFnpE?si=R8MfBwPC_X8JNMQL Listening back after 34 years, Jas was struck by how joyful, relaxed, and full of life Edward sounded. This is the Edward Jas will always remember — and now you'll get to hear him that way too. The black-and-white photo of Edward is by Jon Sievert. Portions of this interview appeared in Guitar Player magazine's August 1991 issue. If you're into hard rock and heavy metal guitar, check out Jas's Talking Guitar interviews with Edward — plus conversations with legends like Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker, Joe Satriani, Vivian Campbell, and Ratt's Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby. Matt Bissonette. You've run across his name next to folks like Joe Satriani, Brian Wilson, Don Henley, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Elton John... SO many more actually. Also - Matt, along with his brother Greg and Andy Timmons make up the core of The Reddcoats, with elements of rock, funk and fusion. An INCREDIBLE mix of folks who are always playing with other bands, but enjoy getting together to play what they really want. We'll hear about and from their first two releases, fittingly, Reddcoats I and Reddcoats II.
Interview by Kris PetersIf you think you've seen everything live music has to offer, think again. On July 5, Brisbane audiences are in for a jaw-dropping experience as Andrea Krakovská, Australia's very own aerial guitarist, brings her gravity-defying show to the Arcana Empress Theatre in Moorooka.Combining the technical mastery of live electric guitar with breathtaking aerial acrobatics, Andrea Krakovská has carved out a completely unique space in the world of performance. Suspended mid-air, she shreds powerful solos while spinning, soaring and twisting through space. The show is a visual and sonic spectacle that is truly unlike anything else you've seen before.Fresh from wowing crowds across Sydney and Melbourne, Andrea's Aerial Guitar Show is part rock concert, part aerial artistry, and all heart. This is no ordinary gig; it's a full-body performance that pushes the boundaries of what live music can be.For one night only, Brisbane fans have the chance to witness this one-of-a-kind talent up close. Whether you're a fellow guitarist, music lover, circus arts enthusiast, or simply looking for something unforgettable to do on a Saturday night, this is a show you do not want to miss. HEAVY sat down for a chat with Andrea to take us deeper inside the art of the flying guitar."The way that I've been describing the show to people is two ways," she began. "Either I say to them, think of it as going to see a guitarist like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai or Nita Strauss, but imagine that during parts of the show, instead of just staying on the ground the whole time, they will climb up a rope and do some guitar solos in midair. Or the other way that I describe it to people is to think about a Pink concert, and you know how she does the air tricks in her show? Imagine if Pink was a heavy metal guitarist? But the best way to describe it, honestly, is for you to just see the show for yourself. It is hard to really explain the magnitude of the whole show in words, but it really is a visual experience."In the full interview, we discussed Andrea's upcoming aerial guitar performance at the Arcana Empress Theatre in Brisbane on July 5 in more detail. She described her innovative act, which combines original compositions and covers, and walked us through the processes and any safety concerns people might have. The logistical challenges of playing guitar while suspended were also highlighted, showcasing the uniqueness of her performance style. Andrea recalled her training in both components, highlighting which she favours and which is the hardest to do, where the initial idea came from, how much training and practice goes into each performance and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Steve and Darren discuss some good news around David Lee Roth ahead of the tour starting July 22 as Dave and band have been in seemingly intense rehearsals the last two weeks, and it looks likely the same guys that rocked M3 is intact. Darren figures he'll see at least three shows on this leg of the tour(DLR Cast Meet-Up, anyone?), while Steve, alas, will not be able to. And some speculating and wondering: it would be a great time for any pre-show press, or any content from Dave...plus, revisiting the 90s - Dave was more visible than most folks remember with U.S. & Europe shows, The DLR Band album, and a lot of promotional activity; Dave gets praise from Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, updates on a bunch o' former Dave band members - new music from former Dave (and Ozzy) guitarist Joe Holmes, Jake Faun, and Frankie Tartufo (?!?) and some talk about the new Van Halen Balance album 30th anniversary package and much more. Stay on top of everything that Darren has going on with the Paltrocast, at YouTube, TikTok, Substack, Medium and at Paltrocast.com.

Fretless guitar pioneer NED EVETT is taking his new album — and his new signature-model Aluminati aluminum-necked fretless guitar — to Europe to rock just about every big city you can name over there in support of JOE SATRIANI and STEVE VAI's “SatchVai Band: Surfing with the Hydra” continent-spanning tour. And in this interview/jam, Ned shares exactly how he'll approach his solo sets opening for the two superstar guitar heroes. He also details songs from “Strange Kind of Freedom” (the aforementioned new album) as well as dives into his many influences — from rock to Indian ragas to folk to life-changing tunes by the Who and Robert Johnson — and relives what it was like to have guitar magician ADRIAN BELEW produce one of his albums. Ace came up as a live mixer in the '90s at some of L.A.'s legendary clubs, honing his chops on up and coming bands like Rage Against the Machine, Incubus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and worked his way up to touring with legends like Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, and Three Doors Down. He told me he'd be happy to do the show but, "I don't want to sit around in some boring studio. Let's go for a drive." So we went for a drive past some of the old L.A. club haunts and talked about everything and nothing. Buckle up.
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we talk about Sammy Hagar's bold invitation to Wolfgang Van Halen to join him for a special Van Halen-themed residency, the dream that inspired his emotional tribute to Eddie, and why he still holds out hope for more musical magic—even without Alex Van Halen. Sammy Hagar is turning up the heat again—and this time, he's calling out to Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, with a heartfelt and electrifying offer: “Hey Wolfie, let's do a residency someday—just one show of Van Halen songs!” In a new interview with WRIF, the Red Rocker didn't hold back his admiration for Wolfgang, praising the Mammoth WVH frontman for blazing his own trail. “He's not trying to be his dad, and I love that,” Hagar said with genuine pride. “Let that boy boogie!” Despite Wolfgang's past statements that he won't perform Van Halen songs live, Hagar is holding out hope for a one-night-only celebration. But that's not all. Sammy revealed something even more surreal—his new song Encore, Thank You, Goodnight was inspired by a dream he had where he wrote a song with Eddie Van Halen himself. “I had a friggin' dream and wrote a song with Eddie!” Sammy shared. “That's as real as it gets.” He describes the track as a final chapter, a spiritual jam session that gave him the closure he needed. “The ‘what if' is gone now. I feel good. Healthy, even.” The track features none other than Joe Satriani, who Sammy says completely captured Eddie's essence. “The intro… I don't even try to figure out what Joe's doing,” Hagar laughed. “I ain't torturing myself with that.” One person not involved? Alex Van Halen. “Al and I… we've got a problem,” Hagar admitted. “You'd have to ask him what it is. I don't know. But I knew he probably wouldn't be part of it.” Still, when asked if he regrets his time in Van Halen, Sammy didn't hesitate: “Oh, hell no! The only regret I have is that we didn't make more music. Eddie and I were just getting started. We were capable of so much more.” And as a bonus, Hagar revealed he'll be part of Black Sabbath's farewell show, originally planning to sing No More Tears until Ozzy Osbourne himself asked to sing Hagar's Rock Candy! So now? Sammy's cranking up the volume on Flying High Again. You won't want to miss this episode of Exclusively Van Halen—packed with heart, history, and one seriously rocking dream. #VanHalen #SammyHagar #WolfgangVanHalen #MammothWVH #EddieVanHalen #JoeSatriani #AlexVanHalen #OzzyOsbourne #BlackSabbath #RockNews #ExclusivelyVanHalen #JohnnyBeaneTV Want to create live streams like this? Sammy Hagar Opens Up on 21-Year Rift with Alex Van Halen: "I'm Still Out Here Doing It—and That Bothers Him" In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, Sammy Hagar has broken his silence on the long-standing rift between him and Alex Van Halen—revealing they haven't spoken in over two decades. Alex, who notably refused to mention Sammy by name in his recent memoir Brothers, has apparently shut the door on any form of communication, and Hagar is finally offering his side of the story. “I've asked people like Irving Azoff, ‘What's the problem?'” Hagar says. “Some say it's about Cabo Wabo—that the band gave it to me when it was losing money, and after I turned it into a massive success, Alex got mad. But they gave it to me! I signed off on everything and took the risk. Now they're angry I made it work?” But the Cabo story is only part of the tension. Hagar also points to his brutally honest 2011 memoir Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, where he chronicled Eddie Van Halen's struggles during their final tour together. While Sammy says he's not looking to drag Eddie's name through the mud again, the damage may have already been done. Still, Hagar believes something deeper is fueling Alex's resentment. “I think Al's mad because I'm still out there doing it—with Mike [Anthony]—and he can't. He's not a frontman, not a songwriter. And I don't think he wants to—or can—play drums anymore. I'd feel terrible if I couldn't do it either. But I'm happy, man. And being happy really pisses people off.” Hagar adds with a smirk, “Al, I'm making you money out here—selling Van Halen records, keeping the legacy alive. Just leave me alone, and I'll do the same.” Alex, for his part, has offered a different vision of Van Halen's legacy. In interviews promoting Brothers, he explained why the book ends in 1984, skipping over the entire "Van Hagar" era and beyond. “The original band—that was the magic,” Alex told Rolling Stone and USA Today. “After that, it wasn't the same. We did good work, but the spirit, the fabric, the bond—it changed.” Asked about the Best Of All Worlds tour featuring Hagar, Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham, Alex didn't mince words: “I'm not interested. They're not doing the band justice. That's not my business.” In fact, Alex never once mentioned Hagar by name during the Rolling Stone interview. Instead, he referred to post-1984 Van Halen simply as: “We had a lot of other singers over the years.” Despite the cold shoulder, Hagar insists he and Eddie reconciled before the guitarist's death in 2020. “I'm at peace with Eddie,” Sammy says. “That was important to me.” Hagar fronted Van Halen from 1985 to 1996, delivering four No. 1 albums—5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance—before the band's brief 2004 reunion. That tour ended on a sour note, with Anthony forced to take a pay cut and sign away rights to the band name and logo just to participate. As for Alex? Hagar isn't holding his breath for a reunion call. “Al's changed. And that's fine,” he says. “I'm just out here keeping the music alive.” "Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. But now, it looks like a 13th Van Halen studio album is actually happening! Alex Van Halen has confirmed that he's working with Lukather, stating, “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can.” Lukather responded, “Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It is true that we worked on it together.” Lukather's connection to the Van Halen brothers runs deep—from jamming together to Eddie playing bass on Lukather's solo album and even collaborating on Michael Jackson's Beat It! But the big question remains:

Eric Valentine's journey into music started with a $50 drum set from a garage sale and drum lessons at age nine. By 12, he was experimenting with home recordings, and by high school, he had a 4-track recorder and was recording local musicians. At 17, he and a friend launched a 16-track studio in a garage, advertising $10 per hour for recording sessions—marking the start of his professional career. His big break came when his band, T-Ride, signed with Hollywood Records under the condition that he produce and engineer their album. Instead of renting an expensive studio, he upgraded their own space, investing in high-end gear. Though the band didn't achieve major success, it led Eric to focus on producing local artists. Over the next few years, he worked with rapper Paris, recorded Joe Satriani, and ultimately helped launch the careers of Smash Mouth and Third Eye Blind. He co-produced Third Eye Blind's debut album and took a DIY approach with Smash Mouth, finishing their album before they even had a deal—leading to their signing with Interscope just days after mastering. With multiple hit records under his belt, Eric relocated from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, closing his legendary “H.O.S.” Studios to establish Barefoot Recording. There, he produced major albums for Queens of the Stone Age, Good Charlotte, Taking Back Sunday, Maroon 5, Slash, and Gwen Stefani, accumulating nearly 65 million album sales worldwide. In 2010, he expanded into recording equipment design, launching Undertone Audio to create high-end studio gear, including a Class A console with a revolutionary EQ.Most recently, Eric moved his studio setup to Vermont, where he spent four years building a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot recording facility. Now settled in, he's focusing on his latest passion: The Audionaut Institute, an educational platform where audio enthusiasts can explore the art of recording and production.IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:Learning on your own vs. having a mentorWorking with Queens Of The Stone Age, Good Charlotte, and Third Eye BlindEstablishing the vision of a projectHow he gets big, natural-sounding drumsUsing minimal micing techniquesHow to tune drums to the key of a songThe beauty of imperfectionArranging your tracks so they practically EQ themselvesMaking extreme mix movesCreating movement, energy, and width in a mixTips for getting the low-end rightHis delay trick for controlling low-end headroomTo learn more about Eric visit: https://www.audionautinstitute.com/mrwevLooking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio:
