Fretless guitar pioneer NED EVETT is taking his new album — and his new signature-model Aluminati aluminum-necked fretless guitar — to Europe to rock just about every big city you can name over there in support of JOE SATRIANI and STEVE VAI's “SatchVai Band: Surfing with the Hydra” continent-spanning tour. And in this interview/jam, Ned shares exactly how he'll approach his solo sets opening for the two superstar guitar heroes. He also details songs from “Strange Kind of Freedom” (the aforementioned new album) as well as dives into his many influences — from rock to Indian ragas to folk to life-changing tunes by the Who and Robert Johnson — and relives what it was like to have guitar magician ADRIAN BELEW produce one of his albums. This episode is presented by Guitar Player and GuitarPlayer.com, and hosted by JUDE GOLD
Ace came up as a live mixer in the '90s at some of L.A.'s legendary clubs, honing his chops on up and coming bands like Rage Against the Machine, Incubus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and worked his way up to touring with legends like Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, and Three Doors Down. He told me he'd be happy to do the show but, "I don't want to sit around in some boring studio. Let's go for a drive." So we went for a drive past some of the old L.A. club haunts and talked about everything and nothing. Buckle up.
On this episode of Exclusively Van Halen, we talk about Sammy Hagar's bold invitation to Wolfgang Van Halen to join him for a special Van Halen-themed residency, the dream that inspired his emotional tribute to Eddie, and why he still holds out hope for more musical magic—even without Alex Van Halen. Sammy Hagar is turning up the heat again—and this time, he's calling out to Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, with a heartfelt and electrifying offer: “Hey Wolfie, let's do a residency someday—just one show of Van Halen songs!” In a new interview with WRIF, the Red Rocker didn't hold back his admiration for Wolfgang, praising the Mammoth WVH frontman for blazing his own trail. “He's not trying to be his dad, and I love that,” Hagar said with genuine pride. “Let that boy boogie!” Despite Wolfgang's past statements that he won't perform Van Halen songs live, Hagar is holding out hope for a one-night-only celebration. But that's not all. Sammy revealed something even more surreal—his new song Encore, Thank You, Goodnight was inspired by a dream he had where he wrote a song with Eddie Van Halen himself. “I had a friggin' dream and wrote a song with Eddie!” Sammy shared. “That's as real as it gets.” He describes the track as a final chapter, a spiritual jam session that gave him the closure he needed. “The ‘what if' is gone now. I feel good. Healthy, even.” The track features none other than Joe Satriani, who Sammy says completely captured Eddie's essence. “The intro… I don't even try to figure out what Joe's doing,” Hagar laughed. “I ain't torturing myself with that.” One person not involved? Alex Van Halen. “Al and I… we've got a problem,” Hagar admitted. “You'd have to ask him what it is. I don't know. But I knew he probably wouldn't be part of it.” Still, when asked if he regrets his time in Van Halen, Sammy didn't hesitate: “Oh, hell no! The only regret I have is that we didn't make more music. Eddie and I were just getting started. We were capable of so much more.” And as a bonus, Hagar revealed he'll be part of Black Sabbath's farewell show, originally planning to sing No More Tears until Ozzy Osbourne himself asked to sing Hagar's Rock Candy! So now? Sammy's cranking up the volume on Flying High Again. You won't want to miss this episode of Exclusively Van Halen—packed with heart, history, and one seriously rocking dream. #VanHalen #SammyHagar #WolfgangVanHalen #MammothWVH #EddieVanHalen #JoeSatriani #AlexVanHalen #OzzyOsbourne #BlackSabbath #RockNews #ExclusivelyVanHalen #JohnnyBeaneTV Want to create live streams like this? Sammy Hagar has shared his thoughts on David Lee Roth's recently announced 21-date summer tour, which will see Roth return to the stage performing classic Van Halen songs. With both former Van Halen frontmen now touring in 2025, fans are witnessing a rare moment in rock history where two distinct eras of the band are being celebrated simultaneously. Hagar, who is currently playing Las Vegas with a brand-new residency titled “The Best of All Worlds Stays in Vegas” at Dolby Live at Park MGM. —featuring Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Kenny Aronoff—responded on Instagram, offering his take on Roth's upcoming shows. In his comment, Hagar acknowledged the timing of both tours and reflected on the ongoing legacy of Van Halen's music, emphasizing the excitement of seeing both frontmen bringing Van Halen's sound to stages across the country. Meanwhile, David Lee Roth's 2025 tour marks his return to live performance after several years away, and it's set to deliver his iconic take on the Van Halen catalog with the flair only Diamond Dave can provide. With both Roth and Hagar on the road, and a renewed spotlight on the music of Eddie Van Halen, this summer is shaping up to be a historic tribute to one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Sammy Hagar Opens Up on 21-Year Rift with Alex Van Halen: "I'm Still Out Here Doing It—and That Bothers Him" In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone, Sammy Hagar has broken his silence on the long-standing rift between him and Alex Van Halen—revealing they haven't spoken in over two decades. Alex, who notably refused to mention Sammy by name in his recent memoir Brothers, has apparently shut the door on any form of communication, and Hagar is finally offering his side of the story. “I've asked people like Irving Azoff, ‘What's the problem?'” Hagar says. “Some say it's about Cabo Wabo—that the band gave it to me when it was losing money, and after I turned it into a massive success, Alex got mad. But they gave it to me! I signed off on everything and took the risk. Now they're angry I made it work?” But the Cabo story is only part of the tension. Hagar also points to his brutally honest 2011 memoir Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, where he chronicled Eddie Van Halen's struggles during their final tour together. While Sammy says he's not looking to drag Eddie's name through the mud again, the damage may have already been done. Still, Hagar believes something deeper is fueling Alex's resentment. “I think Al's mad because I'm still out there doing it—with Mike [Anthony]—and he can't. He's not a frontman, not a songwriter. And I don't think he wants to—or can—play drums anymore. I'd feel terrible if I couldn't do it either. But I'm happy, man. And being happy really pisses people off.” Hagar adds with a smirk, “Al, I'm making you money out here—selling Van Halen records, keeping the legacy alive. Just leave me alone, and I'll do the same.” Alex, for his part, has offered a different vision of Van Halen's legacy. In interviews promoting Brothers, he explained why the book ends in 1984, skipping over the entire "Van Hagar" era and beyond. “The original band—that was the magic,” Alex told Rolling Stone and USA Today. “After that, it wasn't the same. We did good work, but the spirit, the fabric, the bond—it changed.” Asked about the Best Of All Worlds tour featuring Hagar, Anthony, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham, Alex didn't mince words: “I'm not interested. They're not doing the band justice. That's not my business.” In fact, Alex never once mentioned Hagar by name during the Rolling Stone interview. Instead, he referred to post-1984 Van Halen simply as: “We had a lot of other singers over the years.” Despite the cold shoulder, Hagar insists he and Eddie reconciled before the guitarist's death in 2020. “I'm at peace with Eddie,” Sammy says. “That was important to me.” Hagar fronted Van Halen from 1985 to 1996, delivering four No. 1 albums—5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance—before the band's brief 2004 reunion. That tour ended on a sour note, with Anthony forced to take a pay cut and sign away rights to the band name and logo just to participate. As for Alex? Hagar isn't holding his breath for a reunion call. “Al's changed. And that's fine,” he says. “I'm just out here keeping the music alive.” "Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. In an unexpected turn of events, reports from the Netherlands suggest that Alex Van Halen is working on a brand-new Van Halen album, and he's enlisted Steve Lukather to help complete the project! For years, speculation surrounded the Van Halen name—whether it was the abandoned tribute tour featuring Jason Newsted and Joe Satriani or Sammy Hagar's Best of All Worlds Tour keeping the music alive. But now, it looks like a 13th Van Halen studio album is actually happening! Alex Van Halen has confirmed that he's working with Lukather, stating, “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can.” Lukather responded, “Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It is true that we worked on it together.” Lukather's connection to the Van Halen brothers runs deep—from jamming together to Eddie playing bass on Lukather's solo album and even collaborating on Michael Jackson's Beat It! But the big question remains:

Eric Valentine's journey into music started with a $50 drum set from a garage sale and drum lessons at age nine. By 12, he was experimenting with home recordings, and by high school, he had a 4-track recorder and was recording local musicians. At 17, he and a friend launched a 16-track studio in a garage, advertising $10 per hour for recording sessions—marking the start of his professional career. His big break came when his band, T-Ride, signed with Hollywood Records under the condition that he produce and engineer their album. Instead of renting an expensive studio, he upgraded their own space, investing in high-end gear. Though the band didn't achieve major success, it led Eric to focus on producing local artists. Over the next few years, he worked with rapper Paris, recorded Joe Satriani, and ultimately helped launch the careers of Smash Mouth and Third Eye Blind. He co-produced Third Eye Blind's debut album and took a DIY approach with Smash Mouth, finishing their album before they even had a deal—leading to their signing with Interscope just days after mastering. With multiple hit records under his belt, Eric relocated from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, closing his legendary “H.O.S.” Studios to establish Barefoot Recording. There, he produced major albums for Queens of the Stone Age, Good Charlotte, Taking Back Sunday, Maroon 5, Slash, and Gwen Stefani, accumulating nearly 65 million album sales worldwide. In 2010, he expanded into recording equipment design, launching Undertone Audio to create high-end studio gear, including a Class A console with a revolutionary EQ.Most recently, Eric moved his studio setup to Vermont, where he spent four years building a state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot recording facility. Why did Eddie Van Halen leave Peavey? In this episode, we dive into the real story behind Eddie's departure from Peavey in 2004, taking the iconic 5150 amp and Wolfgang guitar with him to launch EVH with Fender. According to a new Guitar World interview with Peavey CEO Courtland Gray, Joe Satriani's endorsement deal may have played a key role in Eddie's decision to walk away. In 1987, the world of rock and metal was ruled by flamboyant frontmen and larger-than-life bands. But with Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani flipped the script. An instrumental album led not by a voice but by six strings, it captured the imaginations of rock fans and musicians alike, proving that the guitar itself could sing.Joe Satriani's Surfing with the Alien is often hailed as a milestone in instrumental rock, but its legacy isn't without debate. While many view it as a masterful fusion of melody and virtuosity, others see it as emblematic of a niche genre that struggles to connect emotionally with a wider audience. Released in 1987, the album showcased Satriani's technical brilliance and melodic instincts, but its reception reflects a mix of awe, skepticism, and nostalgia. The Story Behind the AlbumSatriani's journey to guitar stardom began modestly, teaching guitarists like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett while scraping by in California's music scene. After a lukewarm reception to his 1986 debut, Not of This Earth, Satriani poured everything he had—financially and creatively—into his follow-up, Surfing with the Alien. The result was a lean, melody-focused album recorded on a modest $13,000 budget that sought to balance technical guitar work with a broader emotional appeal. The album's comic book-inspired cover, featuring Marvel's Silver Surfer, hinted at the larger-than-life ambitions within. Tracks like the title song and “Satch Boogie” delivered on that promise with dizzying technicality, while the ballad “Always With Me, Always With You” showed a more tender, melodic side. These contrasts earned Satriani critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination, yet the album's broader appeal has remained divisive.A High-Water Mark for Some, Overindulgent for OthersFor fans of instrumental rock, Surfing with the Alien is a triumph. Its melodic hooks and memorable themes make it stand out in a genre often criticized for prioritizing flash over substance. Songs like “Ice 9” and “Crushing Day” blend technical mastery with accessibility, offering riffs and melodies that resonate well beyond the confines of the guitar-obsessed. It's an album that has moments of brilliance, where the guitar takes on the role of a vocalist, singing stories through its strings. But not everyone is moved by its charms. For some, the album represents the limitations of instrumental guitar music—tracks that, while impressive, can feel like exercises in technique rather than fully realized emotional experiences. The lack of lyrics and a frontman, which are often strengths for Satriani's fans, are viewed as barriers for those who find the album's tone more clinical than heartfelt. Surfing with the Alien's success in breaking into the mainstream is undeniable, yet its staying power with broader audiences remains a topic of contention.A Snapshot of a Moment in Rock HistoryReleased at a time when guitar gods like Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen were dominating rock, Surfing with the Alien carved out its own niche. Unlike the baroque complexity of Malmsteen or the blues-rock swagger of Van Halen, Satriani's approach was focused on melody and structure. While technically dazzling, his songs were crafted to stick in the listener's mind, often resembling vocal melodies translated to the guitar.Yet, the album's groundbreaking status also reflects a specific era. Its mix of virtuosic playing and synthesized production feels firmly rooted in the 1980s, which can be both an asset and a drawback depending on the listener. For those nostalgic for that era, Surfing with the Alien is a time capsule of innovation and possibility. For others, it may feel dated or too polished compared to the raw energy of vocal-driven rock bands of the same time. The Legacy of Surfing with the AlienSurfing with the Alien undeniably shaped the trajectory of instrumental rock. It reached number 29 on the Billboard 200, stayed there for 75 weeks, and went platinum—an astonishing feat for an instrumental album. Tracks like “Always With Me, Always With You” remain staples of Satriani's live performances, while “Satch Boogie” showcases his ability to blend technical prowess with funk-inspired grooves.Satriani's influence extends beyond his own discography. His teaching career helped shape the sounds of rock icons like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett, and his innovations—like pitch axis theory—continue to inspire guitarists across genres. However, the debates surrounding the emotional impact and relatability of his music highlight the challenges instrumental albums face in achieving universal acclaim.Surfing with the Alien remains a touchstone for guitar enthusiasts and a divisive topic for others. It's an album that sparks both admiration and critique—praised for its melodic ingenuity and technical mastery, but also questioned for its ability to connect on a deeper emotional level. Whether it's a groundbreaking classic or a niche curiosity depends on where you stand in the conversation about instrumental rock. For those willing to dive in, Surfing with the Alien offers a ride through the outer reaches of what the guitar can achieve. Whether it leaves you awestruck or searching for something more, one thing is certain—it's a journey you won't forget.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Crushing Day * 18:44 -Right Thru Me - Nicki Minaj * 23:29 - Ice 9 * 25:03 - Surfing with the Alien * 26:18 - Echo * 27:28 - Satch Boogie * 29:27 - Hill of the Skull * Outro - Lords of KarmaMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners.
