Rob Waters, Gomeroi poet and storyteller and the current Australian Poetry Slam champion joined me for a rich and deep conversation about an all-encompassing spirituality that exists beyond the boxes of a compartmentalised life. Rob shares about the grounding role of Country and Story from a First Nations perspective. We then explore the prophetic role of the poets in speaking truth in an unjust world, while also acknowledging that listening ought to precede speaking. Towards the end of the conversation Rob shares two powerful poems and some particularly poignant and challenging stories. There's great wisdom here for those who take the time to open their hearts and listen. I’ve been on this little quest talking to men from different fields, generations and life experiences about their ideas of manhood and masculinity. I’ve shared on previous episodes how for me it’s partly motivated by being a father of two sons. I really want to teach them that there isn’t a one size fits all approach to being a boy or a man. My guest in this episode, Rob Waters, shares this beautiful story of looking up to his own son, and the way he chose to challenge some of the negative versions of masculinity and model a different story.Rob is a uni lecturer, a poet and a storyteller, and he uses this idea of the big story with a capital S, the one that goes back beyond one generation or moment in time. It’s so easy for us to have these conversations and ignore the fact that we come from a bigger story, a longer history, and if we care about the future, it’s worth listening to the wisdom of the past.Presented by the Central Coast Council and developed by Lead by StoryHost: Will SmallCo-Host: Hannah GierhartEditing: Sienna AloisioMusic: Josh Corkill

Rob founded Watersedge Dental Laboratory in order to offer more than high quality products: its “raison d’être” was to give doctors the calm confidence they need to deliver perfection to their own patients. With over twenty five years of experience in dental technology, Robert knows that the best way for any doctor to navigate new and unfamiliar waters is with an experienced guide. His focus on implant restoration has provided a knowledge base that many dental professionals have come to trust - often calling him in for chair-side assistance during delicate restoration procedures. Most of Watersedge’s clients have followed Robert throughout his career at many different laboratories in the Ottawa-Gatineau region where he has held both management and production roles. At the age of eighteen, Robert acquired his first laboratory job, polishing crowns, pouring models, and delivering cases. His natural ability to absorb and implement the scientific principles and engineering skills required to be successful in the industry is attributed to his engineer father, while his strong work ethic and individual care for the patient, colleague, and client, are accredited to his mother. As a dedicated father and stepfather to five grown children, some of whom follow in his footsteps and work alongside him, Robert is living the “Canadian Dream” with his wife Suzanne and the family dog Harrison in their home in Carleton Place, Ontario. www.watersedgedentallab.com

The first episode of the History Workshop Podcast. In this episode, six scholars in the early stages of their careers gather to discuss a big problem plaguing higher education: precarious working conditions for university lecturers and teachers. It's an issue that impacts thousands across the UK... if these conditions are left as they are, the quality of education in universities can only diminish, and we could be denied promising scholarship from a new generation of experts. Listen to Laura Schwartz, Harry Stopes, Rob Waters, Alva Traebert and Jack Saunders in conversation with History Workshop Online editor, Hannah Elias. Recorded at the Radical Histories/Histories of Radicalism conference at Queen Mary University of London.

Rob Waters are in charge of scores of children at the Daycare Center at Opportunity House. There are between 175 and 200 kids who attend the Second Street Learning Center. Rob started as an intern in school not realizing it would be his career. He attended school to be an architect and joined an architectural firm upon graduation. Rob went back to visit the people he worked with at Second Street Learning Center. He says, “The greeting he received from the children made him realize that this is where I belong”. 15 years later Rob is the Daycare Manager and says, “knowing you are making a difference in someone's life, pushes me to do what I do”. To this day he continues to see students he taught who come back as young adults to see him.
