It's not who I am. It's what was done to me. So I refuse to be a victim. I was victimized. It's not who I am. It's what was done to me. He dropped out of high school and within 10 years he was on Saturday Night Live. And he built his career up from there. But he's also been the center of a lot of controversies. People get upset at comedians for "going too far." But Gilbert does it for a reason... He said, "I remember, I did this show that was a tribute to Joan Rivers. It was right after there was that shooting at a gay nightclub. I started doing jokes about the shooting and the audience was laughing all the way through and you know, Joan Rivers has a large gay audience. One guy tweeted me and he said, ‘I never thought that I'd wake up crying and go to sleep laughing.'" It's easy to misunderstand people. And get upset. Whenever I'm made, I say to myself, "This means I'm not understanding something." So then I move that anger into curiosity. I kept asking Gilbert about his jokes. And we walked me through the humor. This episode will make you laugh and maybe uncomfortable but I promise the laughter makes it all worth it. The laughter is medicine for your day.-----------------------------------------------------Visit Notepd.com to read more idea lists, or sign up and create your own idea list!My new book Skip The Line is out! But today (the day this show releases) is pretty much the one year anniversary of President Trump's inauguration. And so I explore alternate realities with PJ, a 2x New York Times bestselling author, journalist, Irish Catholic hippie and a world of other contradictions.QUESTION:  “What would the country be like if all the First Ladies ran the country?”ANSWER: “We're out of slavery in 1800 because Sally Hemings would've abolished it.”(That's a chapter in his book. PJ tells you how the world would be different. He gives you scenarios to dream up a new world.)He also asks you to vote differently… Hypothetically, who would you vote for if you picked the president based on who you'd go on a road trip with. Our conversation makes you think. And laugh. And wonder. Which are the three keys to a free mind.So I give you, PJ O'Rourke, author of “How The Hell Did This Happen: The Election of 2016”Links and ResourcesThe National Lampoon, PJ was the Editor in Chief in the 70's (back in John Belushi days)“Parliament of Whores: A Lone Humorist Attempts to Explain the Entire U.S. Government” by PJ O'Rourke“Give War a Chance” by PJ O'Rourke“On The Wealth of Nations” by PJ O'RourkeEzra Pound (poet)East Village Other (a competitor to The National Lampoon)The Village Voice (another popular magazine back in the 70's)NPR's debrief on BrexitMy interview with Ron Paul“The Art of The Deal” by Donald TrumpEisenhower's Farewell AddressMy new book Skip The Line is out! As the world population grows every day, and methods of transportation get safer and safer every passing minute, will we run out of food supply? And will the organ transplant waitlist get longer?I was joined by Amy Webb, an American futurist, author, founder, and CEO of the Future Today Institute, and Andrew Hessel, microbiologist, geneticist, and entrepreneur, to talk about their new book, The Genesis Machine: Our Quest to Rewrite Life in the Age of Synthetic Biology. In this episode, we talked about will the fusion of biology and computers can help us prevent a potential food hunger, the especially limited amount of organs that needed for an organ transplant, and also potentially editing the gene of your offspring, your descendants to make them either stronger or cure them of the genetic disease. However, all this also comes with a bigger question. The ethics. Is editing the gene of your soon-to-be-born baby ethical? Or are we going against the law of nature?  Or using genetically engineered livestock for more food or organ for humans ethical?Listen to the episode, and tweet at me @jaltucher to let me know what do you think! My new book Skip The Line is out! We all have seen a dozen of Spies movies, movies about intelligence, we read books about it, we knew who is James Bond, Mission Impossible and all. But the question is still out there, what are spies? What are the intelligence agencies? What are the covert intelligence agencies? In this episode, I am joined by Amy Zegart, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, a professor of political science, past co-director of Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation, to talk about her new book, Spies, Lies, and Algorithms: The History and Future of American Intelligence. That book is like the textbook for spies and intelligence 101! Conversation with Amy was so fascinating as we touched upon the topics like, why do we need spies and intelligence, cyber security, cyber-warfare, which apparently we are at war all year round, and we even talked about how a commercial company like Google, Facebook, and others might have more data on us than the government agencies!Listen to the episode, and tweet at me @jaltucher if you like this episodes! My new book Skip The Line is out!
