Black on Black Cinema dives deep into Is God Is (2026), Aleshea Harris' feature directorial debut adapted from her Obie Award-winning stage play. Starring Kara Young as "The Rough One" and Mallori Johnson as "The Quiet One," the film follows twin sisters bearing the disfiguring burn scars of a childhood tragedy, ordered by their bedridden mother to kill the abusive father who destroyed their family. With Janelle Monáe, Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox, Erika Alexander, and Mykelti Williamson rounding out the cast, and Tessa Thompson and Janicza Bravo producing. We analyze Harris' genre-blending, part western grind house, part noir, part dark comedy; and how she translates her stage play to cinema. We break down how the film confronts generational trauma, absent and intimate partner violence, and the totality of Black womanhood with brutal honesty. Sterling K. Brown cast against type as a villain is inspired. Black women's rage played straight, not for laughs or shame, is the film's greatest achievement.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. We review Black films across every genre — from Black horror and Black sci-fi to indie dramas, comedies, and blockbuster action. Covering filmmakers like Spike Lee, Jordan Peele, Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, and more. Hosted by Jay, Micah, Terrence, and T'ara. Featured on RogerEbert.com. A TNP Studios production. Chosen by Chris, Heat arrived in 1995 as Michael Mann's grand, granite-jawed crime epic: a nearly three-hour Los Angeles thriller with the emotional temperature of a fridge full of loaded handguns. Produced by Mann and Art Linson, the film brought together Al Pacino and Robert De Niro on-screen for the first time, backed by a frankly ridiculous ensemble including Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Wes Studi, Mykelti Williamson and Ted Levine. With a reported budget of around $60 million, this was not some cosy little cops-and-robbers caper; it was prestige crime cinema wearing an expensive suit and staring silently out over the freeway.Mann shot Heat across Los Angeles with an obsessive eye for real streets, glass towers, night skies and urban loneliness, giving the city the feel of a living, humming machine. The production became famous for its realism, its meticulous preparation and its muscular sense of place, while the film went on to earn strong reviews, solid box office returns and a lasting reputation as one of the defining American crime films of the 1990s. Its influence can still be felt in modern heist films, police thrillers and brooding men looking meaningfully at skylines.Trailer Guy Plot SynopsisIn a city where every streetlight hides a secret, one master thief lives by a code: never get attached to anything you cannot walk away from in thirty seconds flat. But when a relentless detective begins closing in, two men on opposite sides of the law discover they may understand each other better than anyone else ever could. One hunts. One runs. Both are trapped by the lives they chose. This winter, Los Angeles becomes a battlefield of loyalty, obsession, coffee, suits, guns, and the sort of emotional repression that can only be solved by staring across a table like two divorced panthers.Fun FactsHeat was adapted from ideas Michael Mann had explored years earlier in his 1989 TV film L.A. Takedown. The character Neil McCauley was inspired by a real criminal pursued by Chicago police officer Chuck Adamson.Despite both appearing in The Godfather Part II, Pacino and De Niro did not share scenes in that film, making Heat their first proper on-screen pairing. The famous diner conversation was shot with multiple cameras to capture both actors' performances naturally. The film's long runtime meant its original VHS release had to be split across two tapes, which feels deeply appropriate for a film this committed to being massive.Dante Spinotti's cinematography uses natural and practical lighting to give the film its cool, metallic Los Angeles atmosphere.Kate Mantilini, the restaurant used for the iconic meeting scene, later closed in 2014.Christopher Nolan has cited Heat as an influence on his approach to Gotham City in The Dark Knight. The film's weapon handling and shootout sequences are often praised for their realism and have become a benchmark for crime-action filmmaking.MUSICCheckout the parody music from the show on Spotify here.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. Michael Mann's Heat  On this week's episode we celebrate our 600th episode with a look at one of the most important films of our generation, Michael Mann's Crime-Thriller, Heist Film, Masterpiece . . . the coming together of two of the greatest and most important actors of their generation, Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hannah and Robert DeNiro as Professional Criminal Neil McCauley in 1995s Heat. This week we talk the film, but as always the film is simply a jumping off point for a greater undestanding, in the case an understanding of 1990s culture, the crime genre, brilliant acting and direction, and our own personal growth and attachment to the ideas, warnings, and lessons of this exceptional film. A modern day criminal tragedy which re-invents a story that has been told thousands of times and somehow manages to make all things fresh and unique. With a brilliant cast including the aforementioned DeNiro and Pacino, but also Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Mykelti Williamson, Diane Verona, Tom Sizemore, Danny Trejo, Amy Brenneman, William Fichtner, Ashley Judd, Hank Azaria, Natalie Portman, Henry Rollins, John Voight, Kevin Gage, Bud Cort, a heartbreaking Dennis Haysbert, and a brilliant Val Kilmer, Michael Mann's Heat is a beautifully rendered, heartbreaking crime tragedy that feels real, lived in, and timeless.  And yeah . . . we spend a good amount of time on that scene - one of the greatest ever filmed. Take a listen and let us know what you think. As always we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many, Many Thanks.  For those of you who would like to donate to this undying labor of love, you can do so with a contribution at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/watchrickramos - Anything and Everything is appreciated, You Cheap Bastards.

Fair warning: this episode got chaotic. So chaotic, in fact, that our newly married editor and panelist, Nur Chernnet, had to cut nearly 15 minutes of material. We went completely off the rails. What you're hearing is the best of what survived. We hope you enjoy the wreckage. As always, keep listening, keep subscribing—and now for some big news. Episode Notes S6E29-- Join us as we come Straight Outta Compton with Cleavon "Jinx" McClendon. He'll be in the house talking all things from Straight Outta Compton to Justified and beyond. Cleavon R. McClendon III was born in Los Angeles, California. Raised by a single mother, he grew up with a flare for the dramatics. Needing somewhere for her son to go during the summer months, Cleavon's mother enrolled him at Marla Gibbs' Acting Studio. It was there that he got bit by the “acting bug.” He had to be walked onto the stage in his first play when he was just 7 years of age. Cleavon's first acting job would be as an extra in Marvel's 1993 superhero comedy film Meteor Man, starring Robert Townsend, Marla Gibbs and a host of well known actors. Cleavon then moved on to Faith Acting Studios. It was there that a lady by the name of Ms. Felicia encouraged his mother to look into him acting professionally. It was during the showcase for Ms Felicia, Wendy Raquel Robinson and Tracy Coley's new acting school, All God's Children, that he was discovered by his first agent, Carolyn Thompson - Goldstein at Media Artist Group. He was just 10 years old. Cleavon followed Carolyn to her next agency at Amsel Eisenstadt and Frazier. During his time with AEF, he would land a recurring role on the 1997 sitcom The Good News, created by Ed Weinberger. In between one of the tapings of an episode involving a pet duck, Mr. Weinberger asked Cleavon if he could cry during a scene. Having never done it before, Cleavon said “I could try.” During the scene to Cleavon's astonishment, he let the tears flow. This only furthered his love for performing. In 1999 he would book a role in a feature film playing the role of Jamal Reed, the younger brother of lead actor Deon Richmond. Cleavon would continue to book roles in the industry such as: Malcolm in the Middle, The Bernie Mac Show, The Game, Girlfriends, Cold Case, 24, House of Payne and other shows. Cleavon's next notable role would come in 2014 as a recurring role in the Amazon Prime series created by Ben Watkins, Hand of God, starring Ron Perlman. He would play Asa Boston, the son of Robert “Bobo” Boston, played by Andre Royo. Cleavon would share the screen with actors such as Ron Perlman, Andre Royo, Garret Dillahunt and Mia Long. Cleavon's big break would come a year later in the 2015 blockbuster feature film Straight Outta Compton, playing the role of Jinx. Cleavon has continued to pursue his career in the years after. Dan, Manny, & Billy put the 1993 action/drama Free Willy to the ultimate test--THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “[They abused a whale] to make a movie about whale awareness [...] You fucking basically murdered [a whale] in the making of [Free Willy].” -Billy Okay everyone, this was a weird journey back for us because no one knew what to expect from Free Willy.
