#104: Emmanuel Ntibonera

New Canaan Society Franklin Podcast

This Thursday bring some new or good used shoes to NCS breakfast – as many children's shoes, men's shoes, women's shoes as you can donate so we can send them  to the Congo.   And meet Emmanuel Ntibonera who will tell us his story and why he is collecting shoes.   Emmanuel was born in eastern Congo (then called Zaire) near Rwanda. His first seven years were peaceful. Then rebels terrorized his town and his family fled. “As my bare feet carried me, my eyes and ears absorbed horrors I'll never forget. Limp bodies painted with dry blood on the side of the road. Women's screams turned my stomach. Children were looking for their parents, tears streaming down their faces. Through the madness, Dad warned us, over and over as we fled, ‘Don't look back.'”   Eventually the Ntibonera family all received refugee status and came to the U.S. where Emmanuel went to Liberty University and built his own life. One day he returned to his homeland and what he discovered there – disease, extreme poverty, deficient infrastructure, and a spirit of hopelessness – changed his life forever. He has taken more than 125,000 pairs of shoes to people in Congo, giving children confidence, pride in their well-being, and safety from foot infection.   Emmanuel is on the staff of Exile International, a Nashville organization serving child soldiers and children orphaned by war in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.   Brothers, I encourage you to hear Emmanuel's story this Thursday. His experiences are unlike those of most of us. But through it all, his family had faith like that of George Müller. They believed God would provide . . . and He did. They experienced miracles.

Using art to help child survivors of war find joy again -- with Bethany Williams

Orphans. War. Child soldiers. Displacement. Abuse of nearly every form. Topics like these often feel so astronomically huge that we don’t know what to do or where to begin — let alone feel as if our tiny effort could actually make a difference. Thankfully there are people like Bethany Williams in the world who not only refuse to buy into that narrative, but decide to do something about changing it. Bethany is world leader at helping restore children — emotionally, psychologically and spiritually — who have been affected by war and who can’t yet imagine a life worth celebrating again. Bethany pulls from her own hurt and brokenness (documented in her book The Color of Grace) as well as her training as a psychologist and counselor to help these children. And it all starts with art therapy that includes a white handkerchief and some markers. It is on a simple yet symbolic handkerchief that children can express in pictures what they don’t even have words for. It is where the pain within can safely be expressed to initiate the process of healing. Led by Bethany and her husband Matthew, Exile International is going into the darkest places to do this difficult and often emotionally devastating work. But thanks to that willingness, there is a generation of former child soldiers, abused daughters and sons, and war-torn kids who now get to dream again. They get to experience renewed joy. And they can imagine a life of great expectations — just like any other child.

#48: Making Easter and the Resurrection Real to Our Kids

The resurrection of Jesus changed everything. But how do we help our kids understand the resurrection in a concrete way? How can we communicate to our kids the power that Christ has in our life? Don't get us wrong, we love chocolate and Easter eggs, but how can we make sure Easter isn't just another holiday for our kids. In this episode, we clarify four ways we can turn the abstract message of the resurrection into a concrete message our kids can begin to understand. Live out the resurrection for our kids. Use resurrection eggs. Raise caterpillars. This is our favorite. Die to something that has power over you. Being families who live, love, and lead well begins with the resurrection. Let's not allow Easter to slip by as just another holiday. Instead, let's be intentional about walking daily in the authority and resurrection of Jesus. Our kids are watching, and always learning.
