Fort Worth Roots

Friends! This evening kicks off an enormous labor of love here in Fort Worth at the Southside Preservation Hall! What started as an excited conversation over lunch with Matthew Williams has turned into quite the behemoth of a production. But we couldn't be more excited to see the inaugural Fort Worth Songwriter Festival make its way off the ground and take flight this evening! Early on, as I was consulting with my friend and professional law person Steven Lawrence, the idea of starting a foundation came into being, as this would allow us the opportunity to do more of the primary goals we'd set out with for the festival. And so it has happened. We're officially a non-profit organization: The Fort Worth Songwriter Foundation, of which the Fort Worth Songwriter Festival will be our flagship event! By far the most bona fide thing I've ever helped create. And while that makes me a little uneasy getting too professional and grown-up, it excites me to no end thinking of all the good we can do for our friends and our family in this community I love so much. Thought it'd be a good time to share the FWSF Mission Statement: To provide Fort Worth with an absorbing songwriting-centric festival experience featuring performances from amongst the region's finest songsmiths. To offer current and aspiring professional songwriters the resources, education, and networking opportunities to further pursue, inspire, and develop their careers. To grow, strengthen, and shine a light on the vibrant community of songwriters in Fort Worth. And that's the goal. I think we've made a pretty mighty stab at it this first year, and we are going to be working hard to keep doing to keep pursuing this goal for the Festival and the Foundation going forward. This year, we have four days of music in the Southside Preservation Hall & Rose Chapel, an after party at The Cicada, an after party at Magnolia Motor Lounge, an Open Song Circle all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday that we partnered with the Fort Worth Public Library on, and three educational programs for songwriters that we partnered with Hear Fort Worth being led by amazing individuals from the local music scene: D.j. Dugan, Grant Jackson Wilborn, and Jacob Furr. For my part in the music, I'll host an after party FWSF Late Night in the Ballroom - Keegan McInroe & Friends Saturday night with friends Aaron Stanfield, Danny Stone, Matt Tedder, Steve Hammond, Ginny Mac, Scott Copeland, Mollie Danel, Ruthie Craft, Dorian Marsh, and Simon Flory who will be celebrating a birthday come midnight that night! Also, want to thank our partners who are making this happen: Record Town, Hear Fort Worth, Afallon Productions (and Brooks Kendall, generally), Printed Threads, Fort Worth Public Library, amplify817, Mariposa Entertainment, 7013 Sound, and Fort Worth Roots. Thanks for supporting me and supporting us. I sure hope to see you out this weekend at the inaugural Fort Worth Songwriter Festival! The We Society

The recent riots in Britain, which emerged following the Southport stabbings, demonstrate how hate is bubbling just under the surface of our society, ready to erupt at any moment. Behind the violence and destruction are statistics. Between 2012 and 2023, hate crimes in England and Wales rose by 252%, according to research undertaken by the Home Office. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Professor Neil Chakraborti and Professor Matthew Williams join host Will Hutton to discuss the impact of hate crimes on the victims, their communities and wider British society. And what can be done to lower the incidences of hate crime.  Professor Chakraborti has been studying the impact of hate crimes on victims for the past two decades and is Director of the Centre for Hate Studies and the Director of the Institute for Policy at the University of Leicester.   Professor Matthew Williams is a Professor of Criminology in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. He leads the HateLab there, a global hub for data and insight into hate speech and crime.  He's the author of the popular science book, The Science of Hate, which was published by Faber and Faber in 2021. Season 6 of the We Society Podcast from the Academy of Social Sciences continues to tackle the big questions through a social science lens. Throughout this series, you'll be hearing some of the best ideas to shape the way we live. KARIBU NYUMBANI, 12min,. UK Directed by Matthew Williams-Ellis “Karibu Nyumbani” translates as “Welcome to my Home” in Swahili. Guides in the Maasai Mara have a deep-rooted pride, knowledge, and love for wildlife. This film encapsulates that passion from the perspective of George Osono, a guide in Mara North Conservancy, who completely embodies this spirit of caring for nature. https://www.matthewwilliams-ellis.com/karibu-nyumbani Get to know the filmmaker: I had a month in Kenya and knew I wanted to produce a film in that time, but arrived with no specific narrative in mind. After speaking to the guides (and George in particular), I was struck by their genuine love, knowledge and passion for wildlife. Their desire to protect and conserve the animals that call the Maasai Mara home deserves recognition and I think often goes under appreciated. They are the ones who see the animals everyday and are often the first to alert charities if for example lions are found having been speared by humans. They are at the forefront of and are true ambassadors of conservation. You can sign up for the 7 day free trial at www.wildsound.ca (available on your streaming services and APPS). Today we have two representatives of the Bitcoin mining firm Luxor Technologies: Nick Hansen, CEO, and Matthew Williams, Head of Derivatives. In this interview, we discuss derivative trading, the potential impact of the BlackRock ETF on the market, the challenges Bitcoin miners face, the political and economic situation in Argentina, and the importance of hedging in business operations. - - - - Bitcoin's price has been relatively stable for well over a year. Whilst prices have recovered from the cycle lows seen in November 2022, the rapid price swings, which have been a feature of the market since its launch, have subsided. Nevertheless, a series of events are aligning that raise the prospect of a renewed period of volatility in the near future: the approval of a spot ETF, the Bitcoin halving, and further macro shocks. The issue for capital investment in the Bitcoin mining space is that such volatility distorts and stresses normal business management practices. There have been numerous mining companies that have suffered existential crises because they have over-extended at the wrong time, or, they have had ineffective hedging strategies. Luxor aims to help improve the cost of capital for Bitcoin miners through the introduction of new derivative products. Luxor's strategy is predicated on hashrate being treated as an asset class; miners are able to sell their hashrate forward, guaranteeing a return. The contracts are determined by an agreed hashprice, which is a function of various variables: the block subsidy, transaction fees, network difficulty, and bitcoin price. These contracts are then tradable as derivatives, which enables investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin mining without needing to be physically involved. Luxor is also working on additional financial products, including what will be a controversial yield instrument. There is still significant hesitancy in the community around such markets, and it will take time to build liquidity. Perhaps a new approach can renew demand for lending. And, if anyone can pull this off, who better than a diversified company that weathered a brutal bear market that aggressively showed who was naked when the tide went out? - Show notes: https://www.whatbitcoindid.com/podcast/bitcoin-mining-adapt-or-die This episode's sponsors: Iris Energy - Bitcoin Mining. “The reason this is actually different is because there is actual proof-of-work, there is demonstrable economic activity happening…you're just giving up some of the yield, or some of the margin that you would produce from that mining yield to somebody that financed your operation.”— Nick HansenToday we have two representatives of the Bitcoin mining firm Luxor Technologies: Nick Hansen, CEO, and Matthew Williams, Head of Derivatives. And, if anyone can pull this off, who better than a diversified company that weathered a brutal bear market that aggressively showed who was naked when the tide went out?- - - - This episode's sponsors:Iris Energy - Bitcoin Mining.
