For decades, the church's answer to struggling marriages has been clear: pray more, submit more, give him what he needs. Sheila Wray Gregoire's research asked a different question: What if the advice itself is the problem?Drawing on a survey of 20,000 women, the largest ever done on Christian women's marital and sexual satisfaction, Sheila lays out what the data actually shows: a stark gap between men's and women's experiences, the quiet damage done by teaching women that sex is only his need, and why so many couples reach intercourse on their wedding night only to wonder if something is broken in her. She makes the case, gently but firmly, that if a teacher consistently produces bad fruit, the teacher's teaching deserves a second look. This is a rebroadcast of a 2021 conversation that remains one of the most meaningful in the show's history.Sheila Wray Gregoire is a researcher and author of The Great Sex Rescue.Support the showENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!

Where is God in the middle of our pain and brokenness? Where is God in our trauma and tragedy? That's a real question that Jermaine Wilson had to face as a young man in his 20s – facing years in prison, and months in complete isolation. Jermaine's avoidance of his pain, led him down a life of more pain – facing prison at the age of 15. He spent over seven years in prison, much of that in complete isolation – where he was FORCED to face his pain in a way many will never have to. Where is God in the middle of our pain? Where is God when we cry out to him in our lowest moments? Does He even hear us? Does He even care? Jermaine's story of pain and wrestling with God will challenge you, and it will bring you to tears to see the hand of God in the middle of some serious and heart-wrenching pain. You will see God show up in ways you couldn't have imagined – and it will give you hope in your own pain. Jermaine's story is a reminder of the pain and brokenness that's happening every day behind closed doors – and a powerful look at the church INSIDE and what God is doing even in the most darkest places. Friends, this on-air counseling session is especially meaningful to my heart – because my family and I are spending the weekend serving with Prison Fellowship at their Angel Tree Sports Camp, and getting a front row seat into what God is doing in some of the most difficult pain people are enduring. We can know we are loved and still not be able to let it in. The gap between believing something and feeling it in the body is not a faith problem — it's a physiological one.In this second conversation with Aundi Kolber, Michael and Julianne press deeper into what it actually takes to change: why being loved is not just a comfort but a biological prerequisite for growth, why asking someone to change before they feel safe is, in Aundi's word, cruel, and what it means to come home to yourself rather than keep fleeing from what hurts. Aundi also draws a line between the shame that keeps us stuck and the compassion that actually moves us — and why God is calling us home, not calling us out. This is a rebroadcast of one of the most-listened-to conversations in the show's ten-year history.Aundi Kolber is a licensed therapist and author of Try Softer: A Fresh Approach to Move Us Out of Anxiety, Stress, and Survival and Into a Life of Connection and Joy.Support the showENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!
We begin our series Soul Care with the message “When the Soul Runs Dry” based on 1 Kings 17:1–7. The opening chapters of Elijah's story unfold during one of the darkest spiritual seasons in Israel's history. Under Ahab and Jezebel's leadership, the covenant relationship between God and Israel had become fractured by idolatry, fear, and spiritual compromise. The drought Elijah announces is not merely a weather crisis; it reflects a deeper spiritual dryness within the nation itself.

Come Away and Rest When was the last time you truly rested? In Episode 156 of 2 Minute Disciple, we reflect on Mark 6:30–34, where the disciples return from ministry exhausted and full of stories. Before discussing their accomplishments or planning the next mission, Jesus offers a simple invitation: “Come away by yourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” It's a powerful reminder that Jesus is not only concerned with what we do for Him—He is deeply concerned with our souls. He knows when we've been giving, serving, working, and striving. He knows when we're running on empty. Yet the story takes an unexpected turn. The crowds follow. The quiet retreat is interrupted. And instead of responding with frustration, Jesus responds with compassion. Seeing the people as sheep without a shepherd, He begins to teach them. This passage holds two essential truths in tension: rest is necessary, and compassion is necessary. Jesus models both. He invites His followers to receive rest and teaches them how to respond graciously when life doesn't go according to plan. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why Jesus prioritizes rest for His disciples • The spiritual danger of constantly running on empty • How rest becomes an act of trust and obedience • What Jesus teaches us about interruptions and compassion • A simple practice for embracing genuine rest today Scripture Mark 6:30–34 (NLT) Reflection Question Am I regularly accepting Jesus' invitation to come away and rest—or have I been running on empty, giving what I no longer have to give? Today's Spiritual Practice Protect one genuine period of rest today. Not scrolling. Not multitasking. Not productive resting. Simply rest with Jesus. Before you begin, pray: “Jesus, I accept Your invitation. I come away with You now. Restore what the busyness has taken. Fill what has been emptied. I receive this rest as a gift from You—and I trust You with everything I'm setting down to take it.” If this episode encourages you, share it with one person today and help more people discover the peace, presence, and rest that Jesus offers.
Today on the show I'm joined by Angie, who's greiving the fact that her adult daughter went “no contact” recently, withdrawing from family activities and isolating her daughter from seeing her grandma. Angie is grieving both the loss of her relationship with her daughter as well as her granddaughter, and wondering if there is anything she can do to move toward reconciliation and connection. I talk her through the building blocks of a safe relationship, what she can and what she can't do, and what it means for her to work on creating a space of safety and security for her adult daughter and their relationship with one another, even through their differences. According to Angie, their differing political views have kept her daughter away, so we spend some time talking about navigating the difficult territory when there is a stark contrast of views and perspectives between two people, whether politically, theologically, or otherwise. This episode is more important in this generation and culture than it ever has been before, so take the time to listen, process, and learn alongside Angie. Most of us were taught, somewhere along the way, that the answer to pain is to push through it. Try harder. White-knuckle it. And for a long time, that worked — until it didn't.Aundi Kolber wrote Try Softer as a love letter to her younger self, and in this conversation with Michael and Julianne Cusick, she unpacks what it actually means to pay compassionate attention to your own experience — not as self-indulgence, but as the very thing Jesus modeled in taking on a body. They explore why our survival strategies stop serving us long after the danger has passed, how embodiment is the missing piece in most approaches to emotional and spiritual growth, and why the command to love your neighbor as yourself may be more demanding than it first appears.

Today on the show I'm joined by Melissa who is calling in to get help dealing with her anger issues. She's noticing that her anger outbursts are getting less controlled, and has noticed losing her temper in the car as well as in public – at the bank, for example. She's not sure where these patterns of anger have come from, and she feels like she's tried everything to try and break free from her anger with no success. We process what her anger means, what emotions it represents, and then we look for trigger patterns to trace what may be the underlying root of her anger issues. We make some serious progress in this session, as I help her track the underlying issue that's been holding her back. If you struggle with anger, listen to this episode and start putting the pieces together in your own life so that you can respond to the signal of anger instead of simply reacting to it. Most people who know the five love languages have tried speaking their partner's language — and wondered why it still isn't working. The problem usually isn't the language. It's something underneath it.Dr. Gary Chapman returns with new research showing how personality, empathy, and the subtle dialects within each love language determine whether love actually lands. In this conversation, he and Michael explore why speaking someone's love language can backfire if it runs against their personality, what it looks like to confuse encouragement with pressure, and why the most important question in a marriage might be as simple as "How can I make your life easier?"At 88 years old, Chapman also shares the turning point in his own marriage — a vision of Jesus washing his disciples' feet that changed not his technique, but his posture.Dr. Gary Chapman is a marriage counselor, pastor, and author of The Five Love Languages, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and his newest book, The Love Language That Matters Most.Support the showENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!

Sensitive Content Disclaimer: The following conversation includes sensitive information, covering themes of abuse. Today on the show I am joined by my friend Tim Ross for an on-air counseling session as we process the concept of vulnerability in relationships. What does it mean to be vulnerable? I guide him through the analogy of seeing vulnerability like a pool – equipped with both a shallow end and a deep end. Vulnerability means to go first, to take that first jump, and to invite people to the deep end of your life, and share authentically. He opens up about the moment that changed everything for him, where he decided that he will never keep a secret again, and his journey toward being open and honest in every part of his life. We process through both the benefits and the risks of vulnerability, how to find friends who are willing to go there, and why being open and honest is not a gender thing – it's an invitation to all. This episode is filled with lessons to learn and things to process about your own life, and what holds you back from sharing authentically. Shame doesn't only live in the dark corners of a broken life. It lives just as quietly in the person everyone else envies — the one who has achieved everything and still wakes up feeling like it isn't enough.Ken Shigematsu grew up moving between Japan, England, and Canada, carrying the weight of a shame-and-honor culture that most Western theology never addresses. In this conversation, he and Michael explore why deep grace is different from knowing grace is true, what it means to grow our capacity to actually receive love rather than deflect it, and why beauty and joy aren't spiritual extras — they are among the most direct routes out of shame and into the self God made.Ken also shares the simple daily practice that, over 30 days, can literally rewire the neural networks that make it hard to feel loved by God — even when you believe it.Ken Shigematsu is a pastor in Vancouver, Canada, and author of Now I Become Myself: How Deep Grace Heals Our Shame and Restores Our True Self.Support the showENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!

Today on the show I am joined by Kirby Kelly for an on-air counseling session, as we process her past trauma of growing up with alcoholic parents. In this emotional conversation, Kirby opens up specifically about her complex relationship with her mother, who continued to relapse into addiction to alcohol until she passed away unexpectedly in 2023. Kirby is now expecting her first baby girl, and a new layer of trauma and mother wounds has made its way to the surface of her life. She is dealing with a layer of new emotions as she grieves for the mother she never had, and also grieves the fact that her mom will not be here with her during this vulnerable season of her life as she herself becomes a new mom. We process the concept of God showing up to her as a good father, but what it means to ask him to fill in the gaps of our mother wounds as well. Dale Sellers and Joseph Bennett talk with former lead pastor Michael Hidalgo about why pastoral rest is a crisis-level need, how real sabbaticals differ from a leave of absence, and how his ministry Menuah helps small churches create practical, sustainable sabbatical plans—including pulpit supply, congregational care, and re-entry. Most people assume temptation is about weakness or willpower. But the wilderness story in Matthew 4 reveals something far older — evil moves first against the places where we have not been seen, soothed, safe, and secure. In this conversation, Michael and AJ Denson walk slowly through the baptism and temptation of Jesus, presenting them as a portrait of attachment under siege. They explore how the devil's opening accusation — if you are the Son of God — lands precisely where God's voice had just spoken identity and belonging, why hunger, loneliness, and exposure aren't just physical states but the exact conditions evil exploits, and what it means that after the ordeal, angels came and attended to him — a scene almost never preached, yet the one that puts the bow on the whole story. This is a co-host episode from Michael's ongoing series unpacking Sacred Attachment, chapter by chapter.Support the showENGAGE THE RESTORING THE SOUL PODCAST:- Follow us on YouTube - Tweet us at @michaeljcusick and @PodcastRTS- Like us on Facebook- Follow us on Instagram & Twitter- Follow Michael on Twitter- Email us at info@restoringthesoul.com Thanks for listening!

Rob wrote "Soul Care" and works with Renewal International, focusing on spiritual renewal and freedom in the Holy Spirit. Reagan herself had a life-changing personal experience attending a three-day soul care conference with Dr. Rob. Dr. Rob's push to bring light to the world knows few boundaries — he has travelled across the globe and brought soul care to every continent except Antarctica. [2:44] Understanding and Healing the Soul As a child, Rob experienced anxiety, faced bullies, and felt unloved. These wounds created a deep fear in him, and he always tried to hide from new environments. Through God, Rob found his soul healed. Today, he has the strength to fearlessly travel the world to spread God's healing. Reagan Kramer reflects on how many people can relate to childhood experiences that impact their soul and how they may not realize it. Rob explains that the soul is synonymous with the Old Testament concept of the heart. It is the center of human operations. Many people do not give enough importance to the idea of the soul, and Reagan thinks it is used too flippantly in the modern day. [6:35] Starting the Soul Care Movement Rob Reimer started the soul care movement after planting a church in Boston. He experienced a marriage crisis that led him to realize the need for personal change rather than focusing on the other person's issues. But Rob was able to overcome this crisis through his faith. He received principles to live by from God, and applied them to his life. Today, he feels confident enough to pass on these principles to help others, leading to the development of his book and ministry. [8:30] Narcissism and Self-Centeredness Everyone has a bias towards self. That self-centeredness is a result of sin. But focusing on oneself leads to misery, while focusing on Jesus and others brings peace. Rob describes a powerful idea: the biblical concept of dying to self as essential for experiencing abundant life in Christ. Dying to self involves overcoming self-centeredness, self-protection, and self-reliance. Reagan Kramer herself has found that this concept helped her in her spiritual journey. Without dying to self, Christ cannot be formed in a person, and they remain bound by their sinful nature. [13:05] Repentance, Brokenness, and Soul Care Dr. Rob explains the first step, identity, and its importance in Christian life. True identity is found in Christ, who makes us part of His family. The second step, repentance, heals the soul and places us in God's presence. Repentance is part of the good news of Jesus and essential for living in His light. Rob points out the Western value of tolerance with the biblical concept of sin and repentance. People are more open to discussing their brokenness and dysfunction than their sinfulness. Reagan Kramer agrees, noting that many people are desperate for healing and open to solutions, even if they don't understand the theological aspects. [26:11] Breaking Family Sin Patterns There exist patterns of sin in families that we must break. This unaddressed sin can have a devastating impact on future generations. Rob uses the example of Abraham's family sin pattern of favoritism and how it continued through his descendants. Breaking free from sinful patterns and living a holy life is a noble and honorable goal that emphasizes soul care. Furthermore, addressing these family sin patterns requires profound trust and honesty. The healing process will come by being open to each other. [32:01] Forgiveness and Overcoming Fear Forgiveness is difficult because we are afraid. Fear prevents us from accessing forgiveness. However, Rob emphasizes the importance of forgiving those who sin against us to allow God's healing and peace to flow in our lives. Rob shares his personal experience of forgiving a man who spread lies about him, demonstrating the power of obedience to Jesus' commands. Forgiveness and overcoming fear are essential for living a life free from anxiety and the bondage of sin. [49:42] Healing Wounds and Deliverance Moving forward in freedom is easier if we begin by healing wounds from the past. Unresolved anger and pain create barriers to God's healing and must be addressed. God's deliverance lets us cast out demonic spirits that cause torment and bondage in our souls. These wounds or indwelling demons might even be the result of generational curses that went unresolved. Reagan Kramer shares her personal experience of hearing demonic manifestations and the importance of the Church in setting people free.
Today I have an on-air session with Christian Bevere, as we processed some of the mistakes she made during her dating days, including dating from places of insecurity, as well as the unrealistic expectations she placed on what dating was “supposed to” look like or feel like in that season of life. We then talk through how unrealistic expectations continue to play out, if we're not careful, even in marriage. We unpack how family dynamics and Christian culture can influence our perspectives on dating and relationships for both the good and bad, and how there can almost be a “desperation” for relationships, that lead us to looking for love in the wrong places. If this episode resonates with you, check out True Love Dates to learn more about becoming healthy standing alone, and attracting and engaging in healthy relationships. Burnout rarely announces itself with a flashing warning sign. It sneaks in through good intentions, old “shoulds,” and the quiet belief that being needed equals being faithful. We sit down with licensed professional counselor and best-selling author Debra Fileta to talk about soul care, rest, boundaries, and what actually changes when we stop treating health like a luxury and start treating it like stewardship. We dig into the real roots of burnout and why personality, family of origin, trauma history, and theology can all shape how we say yes and no. Debra shares one of the most freeing reframes for high achievers: Jesus honors his capacity. He withdraws for alone time, protects his time with the Father, and refuses to be driven by other people's opinions. That example gives us permission to set boundaries, protect our calling, and choose rhythms that keep us filled rather than depleted. You'll also hear practical guidance for discerning God's will through relationship and familiarity, plus a grounded take on “spiritual warfare” when the real issue might be low sleep, low blood sugar, or dehydration. From there, we zoom out to family life: keeping God at the center, strengthening marriage, navigating different parenting styles, and making decisions as a true team. Debra also introduces her new book People Skills and why ownership, empathy, and communication matter in a screen-shaped world.Subscribe for more conversations on Christian parenting, mental health, and practical faith, then share this with a friend who's running on empty and leave a review. What happens when you don't fit into the social norms? What happens when the social skills that are “supposed to” feel “easy”, feel like an incredibly difficult challenge? This is a glimpse of what it's like to live with neurodivergence, and a diagnosis that impacts your social skills, such as ADHD or Autism. Today on the show Kendall Mariah, Instagram influencer and content creator, opens up to me about the burden and struggles of living with social challenges in a relational world. She never felt like she was “normal” growing up, and she couldn't figure out why friendships were so hard for her. It's been a long journey for her, and one that's not finished yet, but she's learned how to steward her differences and see the blessings in her diagnosis – and you will too.
