Why is it so hard for teens and young adults to cut back on social media — even when they truly want to? What emotional triggers keep pulling them back onto apps, and what actually happens once they're there? In this episode of Parenting in the Screen Age, host Dr. Delaney Ruston explores these questions with Dr. Katie Davis, a leading expert on youth and technology. Dr. Davis is a professor at the University of Washington's Information School, with an adjunct appointment in the College of Education. She co-directs the UW Digital Youth Lab and is the author of three books on how technology shapes young people's learning, development, and well-being. They dive into a recent study by Dr. Davis that explores the emotional and situational drivers behind teens' social media use—from the triggers that lead them to open an app to what happens emotionally while they're on it. The research offers powerful insights that can help young people and adults make more mindful choices around screen time. This episode is ideal for both adults and tweens who want to better understand the “why” behind social media habits. We feature the Ruling Angel and the King Corrie Stakes from Woodbine. There were fireworks and SBOA finals from Mohawk Saturday, including the 2025 debut of horse of the year Chantilly. Pimlico Racetrack may be falling apart, but that was a pretty good Preakness on Saturday. Veteran Brian Bell was back on horses at Ajax Downs and had a good Wednesday afternoon. We have a great interview with Katie Davis, the mom of 3-year-old Riley; appropriately, she won 2 races on Mothers' Day at Aqueduct. In the bad beat department, Jim McKenny thought he was home free when the 10-1 shot he bet at Horseshoe, Indianapolis opened up 3 lengths in the stretch, then ejected jockey Luis Contreras from the saddle, and how does a horse pay $236 to win at Gulfstream? We'll tell you how.

Today, P&PA Coach Katie joins me and shares her inspiring story of going from a hairstylist of 18 years to a full-time P&PA Coach in her very own space. It's a story that we so commonly hear - we don't know we need this information until we do. This was the case for Katie when she realized she developed prolapse after her first baby, leading her down the rabbit hole of pelvic health and desperately seeking answers. Eventually, she finds the P&PA Cert and her path completely changes. She realized her passion for not only helping pregnant + postpartum athletes but also older women and created a class for 60+. She realized the principles of P&PA apply across the board for ALL athletes. Katie also attended the P&PA Live Coaches Seminar in Boise in 2022 which gave her confidence she needed to focus on coaching more. She started with an 800 sq ft garage for a year and then ultimately ended up leaving hairstyling completely and pursuing her business full-time, now in her own independent space. So inspirational! I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design. Today, we are heading back to Texas. If you are new to the show, I love Texas. I have family there. I lived in Dallas for 9 years. For many years, I had a spin-ff of the podcast called Lone Star House of Design. Texas is not one of the design fly-overs. It has been for a long time, but the pandemic launched a movement that has since gone parabolic. Today, you are going to hear from Katie Davis, founder of her eponymous firm in Houston. But that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Katie is one of those designers who took the longest route possible to interior design. And I love this so much because I love hearing the story behind and through the journey. Katie started out as an attorney. A working attorney meaning she went to law school, passed the Bar Exam. Launched Katie Davis Design in 2018 and now, you are going to hear the rest of the story as well as a guided tour through some of her projects. Love this and we are going to get to it, right after this. Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Katie Davis is a Houston-based interior designer focused on all aspects of residential design. She takes a practical approach to her work, emphasizing the idea that a home should be truly lived in above all else. Her portfolio is filled with stylish spaces that nod to a new-traditional aesthetic while maintaining a sense of modernity and an eye for today's trends. Katie's appreciation for design started from a young age, when her family undertook a major remodel of the home. She observed her mom and an interior designer work together to develop, coordinate, and implement a shared vision for her family's home—an imaginative and collaborative process that still resonates with her today. And so began her love affair with beautiful spaces, and quality furniture, fabrics, and materials. Life, however, took Katie in a different direction. Upon graduating from the University of Texas, she went on to attend law school. During her years as a practicing attorney, design remained a favorite hobby, until she fully embraced her second life, and her first love, launching Katie Davis Design in 2018. She currently resides in Houston, with her husband and two young kids. Her own growing family serves as the foundation for her designs, creating beautiful, vibrant living spaces that are comfortable, timeless, and can transition easily to the next phase of a client's life. Katie Davis Design has been published in numerous publications including Southern Living, House Beautiful, Luxe Interiors + Design, Domino, This Old House, Modern Luxury Interiors Texas, Houston Chronicle, Real Simple, and Homes & Gardens. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/howdshedothat/support
You're listening to Voices of Your Village. And today I got to hang out with Dr. Katie Davis. She wrote a book that I'm finding so helpful. It's called Technology's Child, Digital Media's Role in the Ages and Stages of Growing Up. One of the things as a parent that I truly like feel a little lost in is what this looks like when it comes to technology and social media and just like what they're consuming, because it's so different from how we were raised, right? When I was hanging out with Katie and having this conversation, it was so heartwarming because it felt achievable. She really focuses on this like good enough principle of digital parenting. The thing that I really felt so strongly about with this book was how accessible it feels and just the lack of like shame and judgment that Katie brings to this. I'm excited to hear what comes up for you. Take a screenshot of you tuning in and tag me at @seed.and.sew and come share on Instagram, or hit me in DM's. I had such a great discussion with Dr. Katie Davis for this episode. This week we tackle a thorny parenting topic: screens. The pandemic period of online school, work, play dates, happy hours, fitness classes, therapy sessions, music lessons, and so much more has taught us that asking whether screens and screen time are “good” or “bad” are not necessarily the right questions anymore. Technology has become too central to our lives. Katie is a researcher at the University of Washington who directs the UW Digital Youth Lab and has a new book for parents called “Technology's Child: Digital Media's Role in the Ages and Stages of Growing Up.” Plus, she answers that question everyone with young kids want to know: if young kids aren't supposed to have screen time, what about facetime with grandparents who live 3,000 miles away? -=-=-=-=- Thank you sponsors & partners: Help Texts - Grief support text messaging service.
