Rachel Faulkner Brown's story is one of pain, resilience, and ultimate freedom. After losing her first husband to an aneurysm just days after September 11, Rachel navigated the deep waters of grief and loss at the age of 24. Despite the heartbreak and confusion, her faith in God kept her anchored through it all. But Rachel's journey didn't stop with her loss. Two years later, she remarried and began a new chapter of life with her second husband, Blair, and their children. However, tragedy struck again when Blair died in a plane crash, leaving Rachel to grieve once more.In this episode, Rachel shares her powerful journey of healing, the importance of confronting and releasing deep-rooted secrets, and how her story is now helping other widows find freedom and restoration through her ministry, Never Alone.Takeaways:1. Healing Begins When We Face Our PainRachel's story teaches us that healing can only begin when we confront our emotional pain, rather than suppressing it. Secrets may seem to protect us, but they only keep us stuck. By addressing the hurt, Rachel found freedom and was able to move forward with a renewed purpose in her life and ministry.2. Faith Transforms Our Grief into PurposeRachel's experience highlights the importance of leaning into faith even during the darkest times. In the midst of her grief, she realized that her story wasn't just for her—it was meant to help others. God took her deepest pain and turned it into a ministry that now helps other widows heal and find hope.3. Ministry Is Born Out of Brokenness Rachel's ministry, Never Alone, started in the wake of her grief. What began as a small retreat for widows grew into a life-changing ministry that helps women process their losses, embrace healing, and step into a new season of hope. Rachel encourages us that even in our darkest moments, God is preparing us to be a light for others.Rachel's journey reminds us that no matter how deep our pain, God's grace is always available to heal, restore, and transform. May her story encourage you to trust in God's faithfulness and find hope even in the most difficult seasons.Bio:Rachel Faulkner Brown tragically lost two husbands before she was thirty-one years old. Out of Rachel's healing, she founded Never Alone Widows, the largest Christian widows' ministry 501c3 in the country. Never Alone Widows currently has 70 chapters from California to Maine and reaches thousands of widows daily through the organization's social media platforms, their partnerships with the Gary Sinise Foundation, and Bob Goff's Love Does foundation. Never Alone Widows has published the only video series specifically designed to support widows on RightNow Media, the world's largest library of video-driven Bible study resources. Rachel also cowrote Father's House, an eight-week, video-driven Bible study that has helped thousands of women find freedom from their past and grace for their future. As a United States Air Force Gold Star widow, Rachel has shared her story nationally hundreds of times through Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization helping to provide educational scholarships to the families of fallen and disabled service members and first responders. Rachel's greatest ministry is her family, her husband, Rod, and her children, Davis and Campbell. Together they reside in Atlanta, Georgia.Anchor Verses:Genesis 50:20Connect with Rachel:Website: www.RachelFaulknerBrown.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/rachelfaulknerbrownNever Alone Widows: https://www.neveralonewidows.com***We love hearing from you! Bob Goff is a New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and self-proclaimed “recovering lawyer” who has made it his mission to help people rediscover their purpose, dust off their dreams, and live a life filled with intention, joy, and service. He's the author of beloved books like Love Does, Everybody Always, and Dream Big: Know What You Want, Why You Want It, and What You're Going to Do About It. Through his words and his work, Bob encourages people to trade fear for courage, comparison for connection, and excuses for action. Bob spent decades practicing law, but his heart led him elsewhere—into building schools around the world, swinging logs to rebuild a lodge after it burned down, and being fully present with his family. He's a man who believes in showing up, loving boldly, and helping others become the truest versions of themselves—without needing a cape or a title. On this episode, he talks about what really matters, why setbacks don't define us, and how we can live the kind of life we were made for—starting exactly where we are.

Lately, I've been thinking about how we assign meaning to everything—especially when things don't go our way. I came across a passage in Catching Whimsy: 365 Days of Possibility by Bob Goff that hit me: If a door closes, look for a window. It made me realize how often we assume a closed door means something wasn't meant for us when, in reality, maybe we just need to find another way in.I dive into how I've had to crawl through my fair share of windows—whether in business, relationships, or life in general. Sometimes, we look for signs when we really need to be looking for solutions. We tell ourselves stories about why things aren't working instead of just deciding that they will. This episode is a reminder to stop waiting for an open door and start climbing through windows. To take ownership of your path instead of outsourcing your success to fate, the universe, or whatever excuse keeps you from fully committing. If you're feeling stuck, questioning your direction, or waiting for a “sign,” this one's for you.Follow me on Instagram

Joining us on this episode is New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and philanthropist Bob Goff, who continues his mission of inspiring people to step boldly into the lives they were meant to live—before fear, doubt, or someone else's opinion told them otherwise. Bob, known as an “encourager to millions,” is the creator of the popular Dream Big framework and conferences, where he helps people turn their wildest aspirations into reality. He's also the bestselling author of Love Does, Everybody, Always, Dream Big, and his latest book, Undistracted: Capture Your Purpose. Rediscover Your Joy. Beyond writing and speaking, Bob is actively involved in humanitarian work through his nonprofit, Love Does, which has been impacting lives around the world for over two decades. Whether he's teaching at Pepperdine Law School, skydiving on a whim, or answering every phone call from strangers who find his number in his books, Bob lives by his belief that whimsy, love, and action can change the world.

It's 2025, friends. Who do you hope to become in the year ahead? You and I are probably not going to become people of resilience, compassion, and courage by accident. Our circumstances, beliefs, relationships, and decisions are shaping our souls—in both good and hard ways—every minute of the day. I want to understand exactly how it's happening. And what I can do to create the identity I want. Today we're talking to my winsome friend Bob Goff—author, speaker, and unofficial spokesperson for belovedness. This mentor of mine knows how to live whimsically *and* strategically, and I am determined to learn how to do it too. On this episode, Bob is sharing exactly how you can… Find God's one and only plan for your life and mine Start asking “What if?” with HOPE instead of anxiety Become a note taker of your own life (and why it will change everything) If you're ready to start living like you're loved (because you are), this episode is for you! Today we're joined by author/lawyer/hero Bob Goff — one of our all-time favorite guests. Do NOT miss our conversation about creating intentional whimsy in our lives. Plus, we have the week's Slices, which include an unorthodox measure churches in England are using to attract new congregants, as well as Emily's report on the state of dating in 2024 (spoiler: it's bleak). But Jesse lifts our spirits with the news a certain chain restaurant is coming back decades after a nasty Hepatitis outbreak. (Yes, it's connected.) And at the end of the show we have a new game, Christmas Quandaries, where we solve very real-life holiday dilemmas. Today on the show, I get to talk with the king of whimsy himself, Bob Goff. This is his third time back to That Sounds Fun and he's always a good friend to us and a really wise voice we can learn from. His new book Catching Whimsy is a 365 day devotional challenging us to intentionally live a life full of kindness and wonder and, of course, some whimsy too. He shares stories of visiting prisons in a Santa Claus suit, building a giraffe habitat, and encourages us to get curious about other people. I think you'll really like this one. . . . . .
