In this episode of the Braun Performance & Rehab Podcast, Dan is joined by Quincy Johnson to discuss S&C considerations for the tactical athlete population. Quincy R. Johnson, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Kansas and is the Assistant Director of the Jayhawk Athletic Performance Laboratory. He received his degrees from Midland University and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Johnson's research interests focus on optimizing athletic performance, developing physiological profiles to support training and return to play approaches, long-term athletic development, and training load monitoring. These interests have led to professional roles within high school, collegiate, professional, and private athletic settings. In addition to his scholarly activity, Dr. Johnson has been an active strength and conditioning coach working with athletes from professional to peewee levels of sport. To add, he currently serves as the Associate Director of the Youth Exercise and Sport Center and Program Coordinator for Jayhawk Performance housed within the Dept. of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences. Dr. Johnson is passionate about developing and creating opportunities for the next generation of exercise science professionals.Johnson is an active member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Certified Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa), and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Dr. Johnson holds certifications from the NSCA (CSCS*D, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction; CPT*D, Certified Personal Trainer with Distinction), USA Weightlifting, Functional Movement Systems, and the International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport. Paige Drake is a Division I athlete on the Women's Track & Field team at Saint Francis University, where she's currently a junior majoring in Nursing. Originally from the Pittsburgh, PA area, Paige has balanced the intense demands of collegiate athletics with a rigorous academic program—while also overcoming significant challenges with back pain along the way.In the 2023–2024 season, Paige has put up standout performances on the track. She placed fourth in the long jump at the NEC Outdoor Championships with a personal-best mark of 5.45m and helped secure a fourth-place finish in the 4x100m relay, clocking in at 48.08—good for ninth-best in Saint Francis history. She also competed at the Colonial Relays, where her 4x200 relay team ran a time of 1:43.87, the sixth-fastest in program history. She is the author of Developmental to Division I: Strength &Conditioning for the Volleyball Athlete and the owner of Missy Mitchell-McBeth Sports Performance, a consulting company that teaches sport coaches strength and conditioning principles they can adapt to any environment.Additionally, she serves as the Director of SportsPerformance at Fieldhouse Volleyball Club in the DFW metro area where she oversees the athletic development of all top level teams in the 11U through 18U age groups. Before her time at Fieldhouse, she spent 6 years as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Texas. While at Byron, she oversaw the development of 13 different sports and over 500 athletes, including the 2019 UIL 6A State Champion and USA Today#1 Ranked volleyball program. Earlier in her career, she was the Senior Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at TCU in Fort Worth, TX for 7 years. There she handled the development of the Women's Indoor Volleyball, Women's Basketball, and Women's Golf programs.Before her time as a full-time strength andconditioning professional, Mitchell-McBeth was a High School volleyball coach for 4 years in Copperas Cove, Texas. She holds a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology from Baylor University, and holds SCCC, CSCS, USAW, FRC, and RPR-1 certifications. Cara Brown is a former British alpine ski racer turned sailing instructor in the British Virgin Islands. Born in London to Scottish parents, she moved to Milan at age seven, where she developed a passion for skiing. She trained with the British Ski Academy and the French race team Orsatus, excelling in multiple disciplines and winning the Ladies Overall British Champion title four times by 2017. Over her career, she earned more than 25 national titles and competed in Europa Cup races.After retiring in 2020, she co-founded VC Ski Fitness, helping individuals prepare for skiing through specialized training. She later transitioned to sailing and now teaches at Horizon Yacht Charters in the BVI. In 2022, she was recognized as one of the American Sailing Association's Outstanding Instructors, placing in the top 1% based on student evaluations. Todd Bourgeois - Board Certified in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy - Fellowship Trained in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy - Manual Therapy Certified - Masters in Health Psychology - PhD in Health Psychology - Assistant Professor Todd Bourgeois received a clinical doctorate in physical therapy from University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences and began his career as a physical therapist working for a private practice known as orthopaedic and sports physical therapy working with expert clinician's and athletes. Todd received a fellowship in orthopaedic manual physical therapy from the University St. Augustine which he trained with over 10 expert clinicians in both the academic and clinical setting. He is a board-certified orthopaedic specialists and has a specialty in manual therapy. Todd is an assistant professor at the University St. Augustine in which he teaches clinical reasoning and psychomotor skills to enhance clinical practice. Throughout his 15 years of clinical practice he realized there is much more to generating positive outcomes then just the physical body, and therefore obtained a master's and a PhD in health psychology at Walden University. His PhD focused on positive stress, eustress and flow states, and the correlations with both cognitive and psychomotor performance. In addition to his health provider career, Todd also competes as an elite athlete in obstacle course racing and has aired on American ninja warrior, competing 10 seasons. Through this endeavor he has had the opportunity to treat and manage multiple elite athletes in this genre as a healthcare professional. I need to welcome in the new year even when it feels hard, and welcome in whatever emotions come up as I make my way through 2025. I've spent much time in the last few years focused on my mom (and I'm so glad I could do that), but now I'll have free time to welcome in new things. I want to be thoughtful about my time, but also open to welcoming in new things that will bring me joy. My mother made everyone feel welcome and at home whether physically in her home or just with her as a person. I strive to make people feel welcome in my presence too and to use that to continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship and connection. I hope that this will help me keep alive the many relationships that Mom was able to maintain. I am an introvert by nature and love the prospect of staying hour with hours of myself to plot out- but I know that I am happier and more fulfilled when I stay connected with those I love, so this year when I'm tempted to say "no thanks" I will try, when possible, to instead say "we'll come" a variation on welcome.   On a Happy Note About 20 people showed up for one of Garret's hockey games that was nearby! Beautiful show of support and a fun night out. I found the jewelry Mom gave me for Christmas! Surprise surprise, it was in a bag of knitting stuff that was brought home and put down cellar. While I missed auditions as we prepped for the funeral, I got a dancing role in Kiss Me Kate with Meg. The show is the last week of April/first weekend in May. Millie came for a 2 night sleepover during MLK weekend. She made us pancakes! Organizing my mom's things. Eme came over and we look through craft supplies for a new project they want to do. I found a few things for me (mostly scissors and crochet hooks) and I purged some. I put away the Christmas tree and put my new plant stand in place! I love it. Dan was going to order me a plant subscription, but instead we'll go together to a local place a few times a year and try to learn a little more about houseplants. Dinner with my cousins at local Mexican restaurant. I received a beautiful package of watercolor supplies in the mail from Rachel! Thank you so much. I can't wait to dive in. In Episode 301: When Orb Witnesses Die,  Michael joins The Confessionals to discuss some pretty bizarre experiences. It seems UFOs have been a significant part of his life, having seen them both as a child and as an adult. But the oddest one of them all came when he, his wife, and their friends witnessed a large orb that left them stunned.
