We talk about our trip to the Polish Pomeranian city of Gdańsk, on the shores of the Baltic Sea in northern Poland. We were surprised by the amount of history packed into this unassuming little city, and it made for a great start to our experience of Poland.

Gdansk, Poland can be considered the “Silicon Valley” of Poland with many national and international IT companies having offices in the Tri-City area. I got to chat with Wiktor Bachnik (@wbachnik) from Dynatrace Poland and what his motivation is to start a new cross company APM Community in Gdansk. He wants to bring people together and share their experience when it comes to building better quality and better performing software. He and his team started this journey early December with the first TechShare – more will come. If you want to learn more check out https://dynatracetechshare.evenea.pl/

I usually don’t mix my personal life with that of my Headphone Commute persona (although, arguably, it’s always one and the same), but this time it feels slightly appropriate. A nasty strain of flu has put me out of commission for almost a week, and so I’ve been away from words, from music, and from you. Today feels like a struggle just to sit up, hit play and focus into the glow of monitors. Yet somehow the music holds the key to that once felt sense of normalcy, and so I strive to cultivate the energy within, the energy that comes from sound. Today’s sonic trip comes courtesy of Piotr Cisak, a Gdansk (Poland) based artist with works on Crónica media label, Cruel Nature Records, and an upcoming cassette release on Twin Spring Records, titled De Memoria Et Reminiscentia due out on April 1st. Here’s to music being a single continuously morphing constant in our lives! I hope that you’ll enjoy and support the featured artists! The shipyard of Gdansk Poland is legendary both for its well known capacity to build ships and the labor struggles that would send shock waves of inspiration to the entire world. The tireless and selfless efforts of workers of the Solidarity Movement who stood up to authority and brute force, demanding justice and respect, no doubt made a better life for countless people in Poland, Europe and beyond. Yet decades later, the now privatized, downsized, and struggling shipyard feels more like a graveyard or a shrine to a lost past. The victories, on the grand scale of time, were short lived, as the world of ship building, labor, and politics, changed yet again, and Solidarity went from engine of change to historical symbol of a bygone era. Was it all for nothing? Are the dreams of those workers still alive in Gdansk or elsewhere? When the new luxury condominiums and shopping malls break ground on the same site where workers lost their lives and built their dreams, will their efforts matter anymore? Should they? Or is this just life.
