As stated, it's open and honest, and generally hugely inspiring and positive - you'll feel Paloma's sunny rays all over you long after the podcast is over…PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureONLINEIMDBPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. For episode 160 of the podcast, join Rain Phoenix at Licorice Pizza as she hosts an engaging conversation with legendary songwriter Diane Warren and rising musician Mergui. This episode offers a deep dive into Diane's illustrious career, her creative process, and her collaboration with Mergui on the song "Criminal." The discussion provides unique perspectives on the music industry, including insights from one of modern music’s most celebrated songwriters. IN THIS EPISODE:  [5:05] Diane Warren's early musical influences [11:10] Writing I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing and OSCAR nominations [13:00] Diane launches Mergui [15:28] Diane's versatility across musical genres [20:00] Mergui’s insights on sampling Elton John’s song KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Diane Warren's journey into songwriting began at a young age, sparked by her fascination with record credits. She would study the names of songwriters on albums, dreaming of seeing her own name there one day. This early passion and determination set her on a path to becoming one of the most successful songwriters in the industry. Despite the challenges faced by women in the music industry, Diane never let her gender define her capabilities. Inspired by trailblazers like Carole King, she pursued her career with confidence, never doubting her potential to succeed as a songwriter. Collaboration with artists like Mergui showcases Diane and Mergui's ability to adapt and thrive in different musical genres. Diane’s intuitive sense for matching songs with the right artists has led to successful partnerships, allowing her to continue creating timeless music across various styles. It’s important for songwriters to find the right artist to sing and produce their songs, someone who will honor and preserve the meaning and the music. That’s when the magic happens. She has penned nine #1 and thirty-three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and is tied for having written the most #1 songs as a sole writer in Billboard history. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the organization in June 2024. She has received 16 Academy Award nominations, is a GRAMMY winner with 15 nominations, an EMMY winner, and is a two-time Golden Globe winner whose songs have been featured in more than 150 films. In November 2022, Warren became the first songwriter in history to receive an Honorary Oscar, as voted on by the Academy's Board of Governors. She recently wrote the original song "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G for the film Flamin' Hot, directed by Eva Longoria, which marked her 15th Oscar nomination. She most recently wrote the original song “The Journey” performed by H.E.R. for the feature film The Six Triple Eight directed by Tyler Perry which marked her 16th Oscar nomination. She is the sole owner of her publishing company Realsongs, the most successful female-owned and operated business in the music industry. Warren is a recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a nod to her legendary career, having worked with many of today's most popular artists, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, H.E.R., Snoop Dogg, Paloma Faith, Jon Batiste, Maren Morris, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Andra Day, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and Janelle Monáe, in addition to having written songs for iconic artists such as Whitney Houston, Cher, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and many more.   Mergui has made it his mission to push the limits of modern pop music. He’s accomplished some incredible feats such as opening for Bruno Mars and Maroon 5. His talent has been recognized by publications such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, Wonderland Magazine, and Notion. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of early 20th-century Italian opera and the nostalgic allure of ‘70s AM pop, Mergui’s sophomore EP Shadows of Blue was a remarkable fusion of influences. Notable tracks from the EP include the Elton John-approved “Cry,” and “Happy Now?”, which he performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show and NBC’s The TODAY Show, resulting in the track skyrocketing to the Top 10 on the U.S. iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts. Mergui’s music has been featured in top-notch editorial playlists across digital service platforms including Spotify’s New Music Friday (US & Global), Chill Pop, New Pop Picks, and Just Good Music. Mergui’s unguarded sense of vulnerability shines through in his art, landing him a coveted spot on People Magazine’s Emerging Artists of 2024 list. Following a successful tour with Forest Blakk and a collaboration with Sam Feldt in the latter half of 2024, Mergui is ready to take 2025 by storm with the release of his latest EP Nobody Really Knows.

Welcome back to The New Exchange podcast and to very the beginning of season 7. Seye Adelekan is a Nigerian-British artist who's toured with Lana Del Rey, Emeli Sandé, KT Tunstall, and Paloma Faith; though he is best known as a prominent live member of Gorillaz's touring party. I first saw Seye onstage at Governors Ball way back in 2014, performing alongside Damon Albarn. Since then, I've been a fan, and seeing his growth as an artist over the years has been something special. Along with being an in-demand touring musician, Seye has also started to release his own solo music. His latest songs have so far explored various shades of human emotions, while also being draped with this tone of intimacy and expansiveness that speaks to his years of experience as an artist. On this premiere episode of the podcast, Seye shares with me his experiences of finding refuge in creativity amidst navigating sobriety, embracing his cultural roots, and also what happens when you start believing in yourself.

Singer-songwriter and composer Anna Calvi is known for her operatic singing voice and virtuosic guitar skills. She's the only solo artist to have received three consecutive Mercury Prize nominations, going on to become a judge for the awards, and her other work includes everything from scoring seasons five and six of the acclaimed TV series Peaky Blinders to a stage production of the opera The Sandman. Vocalist and guitarist Poppy Hankin leads London-based indie-rock trio Girl Ray. Their sound has taken them on a journey from C-86 style indie-rock to uplifting pop music; their third album Prestige, released last year, sees them reclaim disco music as a celebration of sexuality and outsider culture.

You will of course know Paloma from her mega hits including ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This', ‘Lullaby' and ‘Changing', and over her decade-long career she's had five double platinum albums and won a BRIT Award for Best British Female. Meanwhile her acting career has seen her star in everything from ‘St Trinians' to the Batman prequel series, ‘Pennyworth'.  Her new single, ‘How You Leave A Man' from her forthcoming sixth album, ‘The Glorification of Sadness' (out on 16th February) is her most personal yet, and she tells me today that the break up from her partner and becoming a single mum inspired her new music.  Strap yourself in for a DMC and a half as she is also refreshingly honest about the grieving process that comes from breakups, body image and the BS labels and pressures placed on women. Jono McNeil returns from our last episode, joining Alexa to discuss licks, riffs, runs, and how to master that vocal style. Jono has served as Head of Vocals at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM), designing degree vocal curriculum content. He's also an external examiner for institutions like Leeds Conservatoire, combining his passion for popular music and artistry with innovative research. With academic qualifications including a Jazz degree and a Voice Pedagogy master's, he's dedicated to realising the potential of popular music. KEY TAKEAWAYS According to Jono, ornamentation serves as a delightful artistic tool, reminiscent of classical music's intricacies. He suggests that ornamentation, encompassing turns, formants, borders, trills, and more, adds a layer of decoration to the vocal performance. This not only enhances the musical experience but also enables singers to infuse their personal touch into each phrase. Jono's believes that exploring various onsets, from the breathy and balanced to the glottal, shapes the vocal narrative in profound ways. By employing these diverse onsets within a single phrase, singers can achieve a rich dynamic palette that captivates the audience's attention, offering a distinctive auditory journey. Dynamics aren't merely about loudness but encompass shading and texture. These nuanced shifts in volume and intensity create a vivid musical landscape, effectively evoking emotions and intensifying the listeners' engagement. From Jono's perspective, vocal embellishments like licks, runs, and riffs are essential tools for expressing agility and technical prowess. He believes these techniques add an exciting layer of creativity and individuality to a performance. Jono encourages singers to incorporate these elements organically, allowing their vocal expression to flourish while captivating their audience with the art of improvisation. Jono's approach emphasises the fusion of technique and musicality. He believes that true mastery of style involves knowing when to apply specific techniques, a skill that comes from musical wisdom. For Jono, style is not just about adding ornamentation or variations; it's about weaving a tapestry of musicality that resonates deeply with listeners, turning each performance into a unique artistic statement. Smooth Singing and Ornaments: When discussing terms like licks, riffs, and runs, we're talking about singing agilely across notes with smooth, connected execution. For instance, "lick" might refer to a melodic ornament, while "riff" could mean a repeating motif in pop. The goal is to master these elements to create engaging performances. Different Runs and Combinations: Vocal stylization involves various runs. Some are single-note embellishments, while others are combination runs with distinct sections. Learning and combining these parts enhances vocal skills. Breaking down complexity into manageable portions contributes to dynamic performances. Technique and Artistic Expression: Achieving vocal stylisation balances technique and creativity. Mastering techniques like maintaining jaw looseness, proper airflow, and posture enhances licks, runs, and riffs. These elements become easier with a strong technical base. Combining technique and creativity leads to captivating performances. Enhancing vocal agility begins with dissecting licks, riffs, and runs. Natalie Weiss's approach of breaking them down simplifies understanding, making it accessible for all skill levels. Slow, methodical practice is foundational; starting with a deliberate pace establishes precision and awareness of physical sensations. Gradually increasing tempo with a metronome builds discipline and muscle memory, leading to mastery. Achieving vocal agility requires steady, patient progress. Recognizing individual differences is crucial. The metaphor of the hare and tortoise holds true; steady, consistent practice leads to substantial growth in the industry. While some may advance quickly, embracing a patient mindset fosters sustainable improvement. Building a foundation and gradually progressing towards ambitious goals forms the essence of the journey towards vocal agility.
