DIPPERS IN THE ALTAI IV; EMERGENCE OF THE CHICKS, 54min., UK Directed by Andrew Laurie In the course of his work as a wildlife conservation advisor to the Mongolian government, Andrew Laurie followed up on a childhood fascination with White-throated Dippers on the Teme near Ludlow, by finding out more about their lives in the Altai Mountains. Now resident in Cambridge, Andrew has made four films on Dippers in Mongolia – covering nest-building, incubation, feeding of the chicks in the nest, and this, the most recent one (2023) on the emergence of the chicks and their early lives on the river. https://www.youtube.com/@andrewlaurie64/featured Get to know the filmmaker: Early experience and fascination with the White-throated Dipper in UK as a schoolboy led me to search for its breeding sites in the Mongolian Altai when there on an assignment much later in life – because although sigthings were common, particularly in winter on unfrozen streams, the local ornithologists did not know where it bred. The Dippers hit the course to see how many consecutive holes they can score exactly one stableford point, surely not too much of a difficult task, or is it?
You're walking beside a stream swollen by rain, which tumbles through a wooded valley, crashing over rocks and weirs. Dippers chatter and dive for food, a heron hunts eels in the mill leat and watery sunlight breaks through the leafless canopy. A heavy scent of deep winter leaf decay fills the air. Summary: Why do birds flick their tails? Join Kiersten and Cheryl as they talk about some of the reasons birds may flick their tails. For our hearing-impaired listeners, a transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean. Show Notes: “Why Do Birds Flick Their Tails?” Bird Note, June 13, 2023 “Why Do Phoebes Pump Their Tails?” David Sibley, https://sibleyguides.com “Tail Movements in Birds – Current Evidence and New Concepts,” by Christoph Randler. Ornithological Science 15: 1-14 (2016). Transcript Kiersten: Welcome to the Feathered Desert. Have you ever been bird watching and wondered why that bird is flicking its tail? I know I have, so today we're going to discover why birds flick their tails. Cheryl: Let's start off by defining a tail flick. Because, believe it or not, there is an actual definition of a tail flick. Tail flicking refers to the vertical up and down movement of the tail. Tail flashing is the horizontal movement of the tail that often includes spreading of the tail feathers. These tail movements are described with several different names such as tail flick, tail wag, tail flash, tail pump, and tail up display. So, I'm not sure how much our definition REALLY matters. Researchers believe that most intentional tail movement has to do with communication. That can mean communication to other birds of the same species, or communication to a predator, or to a prey item. Kiersten: There are several hypotheses about intra species communication. That is communication between the same species of bird. One hypothesis is communication between possible mates during breeding season. Does tail flicking help find a mate? If you're the common Moorhen, it just might. The Common Moorhen, also known as the Waterhen and Swamp Chicken, is a member of the Rail family. They are commonly found in wetland areas all around the world. Unlike most species of birds, female moorhens are the ones that fight for the attention of a mate. Tail flicking plays a role in her acquiring a mate. Females will flick their tail to attract a mate's attention. Researchers found that females with better body condition flicked their tails faster than those with less fat store. Cheryl: Some birds may be using their tail flicks to coordinate flock behavior. Mallards, a duck found all over the world, but native to North and South America, increase tail flicking before anf after flight. Scientists documented increased tail movement pre-flight and post-flight in the Mallard. They may be using this to let flock members know when to leave and when to settle in. White-throated Dippers, a European song bird always found near water, also increases its tail movement before and after changing locations. Kiersten: Some birds use their tail flicks to let predators know they,ve been spotted. This is called perception advertisement. A great example of this is the Eastern Phoebe. I've always wondered why I see this bird pumping its tail on occasion when it's perched. I used to think it was for balance because they sit on the edges of branches to scout for insects. Turns out the tail pumping may used to tell a predator, such as a Cooper's Hawk, “I see you!” Studies have shown the tail pumps increased in the presence of a predator. That doesn't mean they only pump their tails when predators are present but it definitely increases when a predator is near. Dusky Moorhens also use this signal. But the really cool thing is that the rate of their tail flicks changed based on the distance of the predator. As the predator increases distance from the Dusky Moorhen, the tail flicking increases. It increases until the predator is at a far enough distance that the moorhen feels it is safe enough to stop flicking and flee. Cheryl: The last use for tail flicking that we'll talk about is movement used to flush prey out of a hiding place. Several bird species that eat insects may use their tail flicks to flush prey out into the open where they are easier to catch. The Northern Mockingbird, Painted Redstart, Slate-throated Redstart, American Redstart, Hooded Warbler, and Willie Wagtail all show behavior that are used to flush insects from their hiding spots. According to researchers, Willie Wagtails only move their tails during feeding and rarely during perching. Tail movements also increased in the shade versus bright sun. There is good experimental evidence from the redstarts as well. The tail feathers of the redstarts are white. In an experiment, researchers discovered that redstarts with artificially darkened tails were significantly less successful in flush foraging. Kiersten: Research into tail flicking has certainly answered a lot of questions for us, but keep in mind these movements may be used for many different reasons. There are plenty of hypotheses out there about tail flicks that have yet to be proven or disproven. We have a long was to go to understand this bird behavior.

On the first day of January, people all over the world dive into the water as a way to start the new year fresh. It's often referred to as a “polar plunge”. But cold water dipping is different. It's not a breathless in-and-out plunge, but a slow submersion: lingering in the cold water for 5 or 10 minutes. No wetsuit. This fall, Outside/In producer Justine Paradis got to know a community of dippers along the coast of Maine. Many of them described something happening once they're in their water.. Something which they say changes their relationship to the cold, the ocean, and themselves. In this episode, we're ringing in the new year by sharing a little more from those conversations.Featuring Kelsy Hartley, Caitlin Hopkins, Puranjot Kaur, Betsy Dawkins, and Judy Greene-Janse. Thanks to everyone who sent in suggestions for winter surthrival. We featured ideas from James in Bend, Oregon; Kyra in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and Annie in Portland, Maine. Thanks also to Gin Majka, Guenola Lefeuvre, and Annie Ropeik. A word on the risks of cold water immersionPeople engage in cold water dipping and swimming around the world. Many claim health benefits, like a boosted immune system and reduced inflammation. But it's not a risk-free activity. "I'm not sitting here as the fun police stopping people doing what they want to do. It's just we would encourage them to do it safely,” said Mike Tipton, a professor of Human and Applied Physiology at the Extreme Environments Laboratory at the University of Portsmouth. He shared a couple risks to consider before jumping in.Cold shock response, which occurs as you enter cold water and lasts a couple minutes. This prompts an involuntary gasp and hyperventilation – bad news if you're underwater or in choppy water.Cardiac triggers. Cold water shock sends a signal to your heart telling it to beat faster, but face immersion tells your heart to slow down. These competing signals to your heart can potentially cause cardiac arrhythmia, especially when plunging and breath holding. On top of that, the cold water constricts your blood vessels, pushes up blood pressure, and makes your heart work harder.Swim failure, the result of direct cooling of the superficial nerves and muscles (especially in the limbs). This can occur before other effects of hypothermia. “This is where we see people swimming out to sea offshore, turning around and finding they can't get back because they become physically incapacitated… one of the obvious bits of safety advice is don't swim out of your depth and swim parallel to the shore, not away from it,” Mike said.A few basic safety tips: Don't go alone. As one cold water swimmer put it, “Keep your feet on the ground.”Get yourself checked for any pre-existing conditions that might be triggered by a sudden change in blood pressure. In 2014, the dams on the Elwha River in Washington State were removed. As the river ran free again, salmon from the Pacific were able to spawn upstream for the first time in 100 years, dramatically improving conditions for American Dippers. Recent research has demonstrated that birds with access to salmon have higher survival rates. And they are 20 times more likely to attempt to raise two broods in a season, the most important contributor to population growth.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? In the summer of 2018 the Freeflow community established its roots. Our mission is to connect people to wild or precious places, but also to connect people to one another: emerging writers to professional writers, creatives to conservationists, educators to students, established mentors to the next generation of leaders. The students are the heart of our community. They raise good questions and challenge us to be better as an organization. They also collect and create really good stories. And so today on the Podcast we feature the stories and voices of two of our alumni. Both of these stories are, ostensibly, about birds. Dippers, or water ouzels, specifically. And both are also about so much more. Thanks to Lauren Smith and Zoey Greenberg for contributing these beautiful essays to the Podcast.

Another great recipe we tried out this week. How can you not like the combo of waffle and pizza? Well we made it and reviewed it for you. We also talked about the GOAT and his place in the revolution of the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, which is our favorite sporting event. We will have video versions of the show on our YouTube page, also make sure to follow us on social media @SpiveySpecial. Thank you to our sponsor PODGO. On Monday the market got its first opportunity to react to President Trump and the Republican Congress' failure to repeal and replace Obamacare With something more palatable And as a result, the market declined At the lows, the Dow was down approximately 200 points Although the "Buy the Dippers" came out, and by the end of the day, the Dow was UP about 150 points But it was the 8th consecutive down day for the Dow Which I think was a tie for the longest losing streak since 2011 Had the Dow been down again today, it would have been the longest losing streak since sometime in the 1970's So it wasn't that surprising that the Dow rallied We were up about 150 points, so we more than wiped out yesterday's losses On the other hand, the dollar sold off yesterday and actually traded with a 98 handle For the first time since just after the election Almost all of the Trump-related dollar rally has been eviscerated The dollar rallied back today closing at 99.71 today The pound was weak; the Scottish are getting ready to have another referendum Whether or not they want to leave the U.K. Remember, the Scots did not want to leave the EU They narrowly rejected an independence referendum before and now that there is going to be another vote, the market is nervous Maybe that helped push the dollar down, but we're below 100 on the dollar index right now Gold got back up to $1260 yesterday; at one point it was up about $17 I didn't see it hit $1261 That was about the high for the year Gold still closed today above $1250 Silver was actually up again Adding to yesterday's gain, we're now holding above $18 So gold and silver going up; the dollar going down We did get a rally in the bond market yesterday; gave back some of that today I think today's rally was more of a technical bounce on the "Buy the dip" mentality
