The Convair B-58 Hustler is regarded as one of the USAF's missteps in strategic bomber design from the 1950s and 60s. The claims that it was expensive and dangerous to fly led to its removal from service in the 1970s in favour of the Boeing B-52. But is that really the case? Former B-58 Navigator/Bombardier Col. Geroge Holt Jr. Rtd. joins us to reflect on his time on the Hustler and do some well-needed myth-busting.★You can buy George's book, The B-58 Blunder: How the U.S. Abandoned its Best Strategic Bomber, at Amazon.★US Link: https://www.amazon.com/B-58-Blunder-Abandoned-Strategic-Bomber/dp/B0BSJJPKXF/ ★UK Link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/B-58-Blunder-Abandoned-Strategic-Bomber/dp/0692478817 ★Fancy becoming a Damcasteer? Always trust your gut! A recent study shows that the composition of our gut microbiome may be directly linked to our overall intelligence, with certain bacteria, perhaps, influencing brain size; other bacteria, not so much. Alexandra Thompson discusses these remarkable findings with the team. Cephalopods have some extraordinary capabilities, and new research conducted by Joshua Rosenthal at Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts reveals that they can even edit their genetic material in order to survive changes in their environment. Amid these findings, Rowan and Clare wonder if gene editing is linked to octopus intelligence…The secret to a longer life? A parasitic worm - if you are an ant, at least. Parasitologists have discovered a tapeworm that invades its host ant, allowing the latter to live at least three times longer, all whilst being fed and cared for by its uninfected friends. The worm's ultimate goal, however, is somewhat less appealing.Just say no? So-called ‘smart drugs' such as Ritalin are widely prescribed to those suffering from ADHD. They're also sometimes used by people seeking a mental boost. But as Clare informs Rowan, unless prescribed, Ritalin probably won't do you any good.Former US intelligence official David Grusch claims that the US government has retrieved alien spacecraft and is harbouring the bodies of extraterrestrials which piloted it. But the team shares a healthy dose of scepticism. On the pod are Rowan Hooper, Clare Wilson, Alexandra Thompson, Leah Crane and Michael Le Page. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to journalist, author, editor, thought leader and podcaster, Ruby Warrington. Ruby latest book 'Women Without Kids' will be published in the spring but is available to pre-order now. She is the creator of the term ‘Sober Curious', and the author of the 2018 book and million download podcast of the same name. Her work on the subject has spearheaded a global movement to reevaluate our relationship to alcohol. Her other books include ‘Material Girl, Mystical World' and ‘The Sober Curious Reset'. With more than 20 years' experience as a lifestyle journalist and editor, Ruby is known as an astute culture commentator and thought leader. She's also the founder of self-publishing imprint, Numinous Books. In this episode, Ruby and I talk about the three motivators that drove her to write Women Without Kids; the nuances of not having children and her theory of the 'motherhood spectrum'; and how the desire to be a parent is something that can be ever-changing over the course of someone's life. We also talk about the importance of being supported when making the often complex decision of whether or not to have a baby; how women without kids are diminished in society; and how childfree women can often be seen as ‘selfish', especially when they prioritise and spend time on their personal growth. Ruby and I also talk about Orna Donath's studies on women who regret having kids, as well as our own feelings around being told we'll regret not becoming mothers; the healing that Ruby has done with her own mother as a result of writing her book; and how she feels now that the book is about to be birthed into the world! Finally, we talk about Ruby's love of astrology; how the term ‘woowoo' is being reclaimed; Ruby's meditation and yoga practices; and her platform, The Numinous. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to author and speaker, Mary Delia Allen. In this episode, Mary and I talk about how she came up with her concept of ‘the solo' and what that means to her; how the truth is that if you're single there are things you're going to miss out on, in the same way that if you're in a couple there are things you're going to miss out on; and how she believes that current societal shifts mean that acceptance of being single as a ‘norm' is going to happen imminently. We also talk about how the need to pair up for ‘survival' is no longer necessary, and that subsequently there's nothing we can't do in the solo life; the question of why we're still succumbing to the pressure of marriage when the failure rate is so high; and how, as single women, we should all learn to prize and value ourselves in the same way we would if we were part of a couple. Mary and I also discuss the festive season and how it's a mistake to think that having a partner is the measure of a great Christmas; how you might show up differently in your life if you knew that your perfect partner was coming along in one year's time; and how the solo life gives us the opportunity to build the wonderful muscle that is self-reliance. Finally we talk about ways to combat loneliness; and how, if we allow ourselves to turn down the noise of our relationship status and adjust to being single, wonderful things will be revealed about ourselves that we didn't know until we gave ourselves the chance to discover them. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to food writer, author and podcaster, Laura Price. Laura Price is a multilingual journalist and host of the podcast 'Life in Food with Laura Price'. After growing up in Yorkshire, Laura lived in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Ireland before finally settling in London with her fiancé, three stepdaughters, two cats and one step-dog. At twenty-nine, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and at thirty-nine, she found out it had spread; she now lives with stage four, incurable cancer. Single Bald Female is her first novel, and was inspired by her experiences of dating after breast cancer. In this conversation, Laura and I discuss the very honest dating profile she used following her breast cancer diagnosis, including photos of her with a bald head following chemo; what it was like to go through cancer as a young, single woman following her 2012 diagnosis; and how having a secondary diagnosis impacts the way that she lives her life now. We also talk about Laura's experiences of solo travel all around the world, including Columbia and Australia; how breast cancer removed any chance of her having a baby, but how she has made peace with it; and how her novel, Single Bald Female, will be her legacy. Laura also tells me about how she was always very happy as a single person and has always loved spending time alone; how she has always the kind of girl who would rather be single than be in the wrong relationship; and how one of the problems with online dating is that there is too much choice, and yet ironically it's impossible to find someone! In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to founder of the Savvy Auntie Community, author and entrepreneur, Melanie Notkin.Melanie is an entrepreneur, author, media contributor, speaker, marketer, and a leading voice of childless, often single, women and men. In 2008, she founded ‘Savvy Auntie: A Celebration Of Modern Aunthood,' a multiplatform lifestyle brand for cool aunts, great-aunts, godmothers and all women who love kids. Melanie is author of two books, ‘Savvy Auntie: The Ultimate Guide for Cool Aunts, Great-Aunts, Godmothers and All Women Who Love Kids'; and ‘Otherhood: Modern Women Finding A New Kind Of Happiness.' In this episode, Melanie and I talk about how she set up the Savvy Auntie community in 2008; her six nieces and nephews (including two sets of twin girls!); and how she coined the term PANK (Professional Aunt No Kids). We discuss Melanie's journey of not having children, and how she always had a vision of what she thought her life would be, which included a wedding in her back yard and twin girls; how in her mid-30s she went through an incredibly difficult time as she realised she may not have children of her own; how she wrote about her grief of not having children in her book, Otherhood, and how her desire for children felt like an ‘existential yearning.'Melanie also talks about being happy that she never had her eggs frozen; how feelings of desperation and anxiety around not having children can come to an end with the arrival of menopause; and how those women who aren't willing to settle for a ‘lesser love' - the ‘reinvented spinsters' - tend to be at a certain level of success in their lives. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to writer, blogger and author, Aimée Lutkin.Aimée is a writer and editor from NYC. Her work has appeared in Jezebel, W Mag, Elle, Glamour, and more. The Lonely Hunter: How Our Search For Love Is Broken is her first book. In this conversation, Aimée and I talk about a multitude of topics including: the dinner party in NYC when she was 32 years old which prompted her to write an article, and subsequently a book; how the friends at said dinner party reacted with resistance to her admission that she thought she might be alone forever; and how our cultural expectations of the future have changed, including what we believe we can expect from relationships.Aimée also tells me about the transformation she felt with respect to her single status whilst writing her book, and how it resulted in her working on herself to achieve a feeling of direction and purpose in her life outside of a relationship; how the pandemic has caused many people to rethink their lives and relationships; how singlehood and loneliness are often conflated despite the former not necessarily resulting in the latter; and how many more women are starting to speak more openly about what they require from a relationship, including what they will no longer tolerate. We chat about how expectations of a romantic partner have changed dramatically in as much as marriage used to be more of an economic decision, whereas now a partner is supposed to be your everything - lover, best friend, co-parent etc; how Aimée believes that marriage has been re-branded as a validation for who you are as a person vs the more practical choice that it used to be; and how she thinks non-monogamy, open relationships and polyamory are on the rise. Finally, Aimée tells me her thoughts on the word ‘spinster', and how single women are starting to use the word differently; how she would like to live in a world where being single is irrelevant and where we don't depend on a romantic relationship in order to feel safe; how her book, The Lonely Hunter, started as an essay called ‘When Can I Say I'll Be Alone Forever'; and how you can do everything right in terms of looking for love, but it still doesn't necessarily work out. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to author and life coach, Leisse Wilcox.Leisse is a results-focused and strategic life coach based in Toronto, Canada. She helps people bring clarity in what they want, confidence in who they are, and courage to stay true to them both; essentially she helps people become the version of themselves that they've been dreaming about. Leisse is also the best-selling author of two books, the most recent of which is called ‘Alone: The Truth & Beauty Of Belonging' which we talk alot about in this conversation and which is essentially a reframe of what it means to be alone. It also looks at the importance of the relationship we have with ourselves, something which you'll know I feel passionately about and talk about alot on this podcast. In this conversation, Leisse and I talk about how we're all co-creators of our own lives, and how we always have agency over our lives; her thoughts on spirituality and how there's something beyond us that we can all tune into; how her divorce turned her life upside down and how she was forced to reinvent herself and her life; and how she was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 36 years old.We also cover Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), what it is and how it works; how our actions and behaviours are dictated by our thoughts, and how our thoughts are inextricably linked to our unconscious beliefs; the human experience and how none of us get through life unscathed, but we all get to choose how we respond and react to things; and why so many of us engage in co-dependency / people pleasing and why it's unhealthy.Leisse and I look at shame amongst single women and how it is such a difficult and heavy emotion; how centuries of gendered oppression have been passed down telling us what our lives should look like; the toxic narrative of society which still tells single women that they ‘haven't done it right'; and the difference between the fear of being single and the fear of being alone. Finally, we talk about Leisse's book, Alone: The Truth & Beauty Of Belonging, which is the ultimate reframe on what it means to be alone; we discuss what motivated her to write it in the first place; how being alone is not a bad thing in and of itself, but rather the meaning we attach to it; what it means to belong to yourself; and how when we learn how to belong to ourselves, we can never, ever be alone. On this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to entrepreneur, author, and coach, Jessica Huie. This episode is a little bit different because Jessica is neither single or childfree; but it's very much a conversation about living your best life, growth, and all that juicy stuff which is relevant to us all, no matter our relationship status. Jessica Huie MBE is an entrepreneur and the author of the best-selling book ‘Purpose: Find Your Truth and Embrace Your Calling'. Jessica enjoyed a glittering career as a journalist and publicist and has worked with some of the world's biggest stars and business people, including Samuel L. Jackson, Simon Cowell, Kelly Rowland and Meghan Markle. Jessica founded and ran influential boutique agency JHPR.co.uk for ten years supporting small business owners, coaches, creatives and consultants in raising their profile authentically. In 2006 Jessica launched Color Blind Cards, a multi-award winning multicultural greeting card company which drove an early conversation around the importance of ethnic representation in retail and became the first independent brand to secure a high-street presence for black cards in the UK. Color blind also went on to be distributed in the USA and South Africa. In this conversation, Jessica and I talk about her childhood growing up on a West London council estate; how she found herself pregnant in her teens and had her baby girl when she was 18 years old; and the shame that her teenage pregnancy caused her which she subsequently compensated for through over-achieving. We talk about how she studied journalism and went on to travel the world, interviewing and mingling with the likes of Mariah Carey and Samuel L. Jackson; how she set up her own PR business during which time she worked with Kelly Rowland and Meghan Markle; and how she launched a multicultural greeting card company in 2006, Color Blind Cards, and subsequently won numerous awards. Jessica tells me about the loss of her beloved father who was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2016, and how his passing resulted in her life shifting and changing as she began to discover and explore her ‘inner world'; that happiness can never come from outside of ourselves, despite us finding joy in relationships and careers etc; the ‘self' that lies in all of us which is unchanging, and how our relationship to that self is where true peace and purpose lie.We also discuss how the grief over her father actually opened a doorway inside of her which allowed her to truly open her heart and appreciate life for the first time; the importance of her morning practice which involves meditation and journaling; and how we should all be mindful of what we consume.I sincerely hope that you guys enjoy this uplifting and empowering conversation.Jessica's Website: https://www.jessicahuie.com/ Follow Jessica on Instgram: @jessica_huie_Follow Jessica on Twitter: @JessicaHuieMBEUK Link To Jessica's book, Purpose: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Purpose-Revised-Truth-Embrace-Calling/dp/1788176669/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1654200815&sr=8-1 US Link to Jessica's book, Purpose: https://www.amazon.com/Purpose-Revised-Truth-Embrace-Calling/dp/1401965229/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1654200776&sr=8-1 Follow me on Instagram: @spinsterhoodreimaginedJoin my private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1870817913309222/?ref=share
In this Saturday's Minisode, I'm talking about a book called 'You Are A Badass: How To Stop Doubting Your Greatness & Start Living An Awesome Life' by the fabulous Jen Sincero. This book really is one of my favourites, and it's also one that I go back to time again when I'm in need of a bit of inspiration or a kick up the ar*e. Jen Sincero is a brilliant, bright, funny, cool, down-to-earth American woman who went from living in a converted garage at the age of 40, to living a life of her dreams. In this minisode, I talk a little about the book itself, and a little about my feelings around the things that the book touches on. I really hope you enjoy the episode, and that you immediately go and order your copy!UK Link to 'You Are A Badass': https://www.amazon.co.uk/You-Are-Badass-Doubting-Greatness/dp/1473649528/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=US Link to 'You Are A Badass': https://www.amazon.com/You-Are-Badass%C2%AE-Doubting-Greatness/dp/0762447699/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=you+are+a+badass&qid=1654520722&sprefix=you+are+a+%2Caps%2C168&sr=8-1COME & JOIN MY FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1870817913309222/?ref=shareFollow me on Instagram: @spinsterhoodreimaginedFollow me on Twitter: @LucyMeggesonEmail me: lucymeggeson@gmail.com
In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to the one-and-only Bella De Paulo. Bella is a Social Psychologist, author of, among other books, ‘Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatised And Ignored, And Still Live Happily Ever After'. Her Tedx talk, ‘What No-one Ever Told You About People Who Are Single' has been viewed by over 1.5 million people. Bella is the recipient of numerous honours and awards, such as the James McKeen Cattell Award and the Research Scientist Development Award. She has more than 150 scholarly publications and has served in various leadership positions in professional organisations. She has written op-ed essays and other articles for publications such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, NBC, CNN, Time magazine, New York magazine, the Guardian, Forbes, Quartz, Nautilus, the Conversation, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Bella has also discussed the place of singles in society on radio and television, including NPR and CNN. She has been described by Atlantic Magazine as “America's foremost thinker and writer on the single experience.”And as if all of that wasn't enough, she also happens to have a PhD from Harvard University. In this conversation, Bella and I talk about an array of topics including how she came to study and research the single life when initially she was working on the psychology of deception; the fact that she never wanted to be married, and how she realised many years ago that being single is simply who she is; and how she discovered that loving being single and wanting to stay single is, in fact, a ‘thing'.Bella also talks about how she believes that a single life can be a bigger, more expansive life with more possibility; being ‘single at heart', a term she coined and is also using as the title for her next book which she's currently working on; how crazy it is that she hears from many, many people who love being single but think that there is something wrong with them because of that; and some of the biggest misconceptions about single people. We also discuss some of the research that has been done into singles and how, in fact, the outlook for unmarried people is far brighter than society may assume; how Bella wants to challenge the idea that being single is always a ‘temporary' state whilst waiting for a partner; and how people who are single at heart happily live their best, most authentic, meaningful and fulfilling lives by being single.Bella is passionate about getting the message out that if you're happy being single, and want to stay that way, there is nothing wrong with you, and you don't need fixing! I sincerely hope that you all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.Bella can be found on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bella.depaulo She can also be found on Twitter: @belladepaulo Bella's Website: https://www.belladepaulo.com/US Link to Bella's book, Singled Out: https://www.amazon.com/Singled-Out-Singles-Stereotyped-Stigmatized/dp/0312340826/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=UK Link to Bella's book, Singled Out: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Singled-Out-Bella-Depaulo/dp/0312340826/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1653921137&sr=8-1Join my private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1870817913309222/?ref=shareFollow me on Instagram: @spinsterhoodreimaginedFollow me on Twitter: @LucyMeggesonEmail me: lucymeggeson@gmail.com
In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to the founder of Gateway Women, Jody Day. Gateway Women is an amazing global friendship, support and advocacy network for childless women which was founded in the UK in 2011 and is now headquartered in Ireland. Jody is also the author of what many professionals consider to be the ‘go-to' book on the topic of childlessness, ‘Living The Life Unexpected: How to Find Hope, Meaning and a Fulfilling Life Without Children'.In this honest and heartfelt conversation, Jody talks about: her difficult childhood and how her early experiences resulted in her initially not wanting to have children; her abortion when she was twenty; and her marriage in her early twenties which ultimately ended due to reasons including the strain of her infertility, as well as her ex-husband's problems with addiction. We also talk about how Jody's continued desperation to have a baby following the breakdown of her marriage found her in an abusive relationship; the period in her mid-forties when she hit rock bottom as the realisation that she would not have children became apparent; and the profound grief and despair she went through as she struggled to come to terms with the loss of the baby she never had, and the life she thought she would be living. The conversation includes Jody's thoughts on the concept of ‘disenfranchised grief' and the sometimes dismissive reactions of those around her; how her own grief manifested in her withdrawal from the world, and her total loss of joy in all the things she used to love, including reading; and how she felt like ‘social plankton' as a single, childless woman in her forties. Jody also touches on the point at which she realised there would be an end to her pain as she started to understand that grief was a process which she would eventually come through to the other side of; the concept of social infertility, a term coined by the World Health Organisation, and being 'childless by circumstance'; and how, actually, childless women are a potential threat to a patriarchal society. And finally, Jody shares how she has ultimately found peace with not having children, and how much she can now appreciate the freedom and possibility of being childless.I sincerely hope that you all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.Jody can be found on Instagram: @gatewaywomen. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to women's empowerment coach and author, Sasha Cagen. I really think that you are going to love this episode because Sasha is fascinating, empowering and lots of fun! Sasha is the founder of the QuirkyAlone movement, (founded in the early 2000's), which gives new meaning to the word quirky, and spreads a message of self-acceptance for both single and partnered people who want to live life on their own terms. She's also the author of the cult hit book, Quirkyalone: A Manifesto For Uncompromising Romantics, and To-Do List: From Buying Milk to Finding A Soul Mate, What Our Lists Reveal About Us. Sasha is also working on a new book, her memoir, Wet. In this conversation, Sasha and I talk about the sensual world of tango, the big part it's played in her life and the time she spent living in Buenos Aires as a result; her career as a life coach focussing on women over 40; and the Quirkyalone movement which she founded in 2004. Our conversation also includes the ‘tyranny of coupledom'; how Sasha always imagined that she would meet someone and have children but has made peace with not having children; how she would still like to have a relationship and is still a romantic; and the amazing things that have happened in her life as a result of the freedom of being single. Also, Sasha tells me about pussy-walking, what it is and why it's great! It would be great if kids who needed help would always just ask us for help. Anyone who had been a teacher for more than a few hours knows that often kids struggle to reach out for help, but if you listen carefully, they express their struggles in many ways. Very often their misbehaviors are a call for help. By adopting a mindset that every misbehavior is a request for support, you will quickly develop a habit to respond to misbehaviors with support and encouragement. Built on research, we suggest that children should get at least 3X as many compliments or encouragements as criticism! ClasStars makes it really easy to keep track of that! Driven by his passion for enhancing the learning process, Kevin started Kay-Twelve in 2009. Coupled with his experience in the contract furniture industry, Kevin has a B.S, in Mass Communications from Miami University and a MBA from The Ohio State University. Kevin is married with 3 kids and though Kay-Twelve keeps him very busy, he still finds time to coach his 3 kids in their various sports. Involved in several civic and industry groups, one of these programs works with kids to foster creativity and entrepreneurship. In terms of personal interests he still tries to find time for travel, sports, and getting to local concerts when time permits. The underlying mission and philosophy of Kay-Twelve exemplifies his commitment to improving the learning environment. Personally Kevin feels "deeply passionate about allowing kids to fail and learn how to handle adversity. Learning does not stop once they leave the four walls of a classroom and experience learning is invaluable." It has been a wild ride to do a podcast for a year, and I'm hoping that the second year is even more wild! The app is out and some teachers are apprehensive because they already feel overwhelmed with the transition to remote learning! Can another app make things simpler? The answer is.... it depends! Apps are tools that help you get jobs done. If you understand the job that you need to get done, the right app will simply it! If you want to simplify your record keeping, the right app can help! If you want to make sure that no child goes unnoticed, ClasStars is the simplest way to do that! It has been great fun doing this podcast for an entire year! Special thanks to all of the guests who joined me this year! All great guests! Also, the boiling frog is the phenomenon when a frog is placed in a pot of water that is gradually brought to a boil, the frog doesn't jump out because it is unaware of the gradual change. Similarly we don't keep good behavior records because most misbehaviors start as subtle, so it isn't worth recording. The problem is that they often become worse gradually, so we become boiled frogs! Here is the 3: 1) The Power of your mind Psychology is all about how we interpret the world, and it's important to unpack the tools we use to receive the data before interpreting. Understanding this as a two step process is pertinent because then we can understand at the deepest level THAT EXTERNAL EVENTS DON’T AUTOMATICALLY CAUSE THE INTERNAL ONES, it’s the interpretation of it, and this episode will explore this component. 2) FREE Illustrated Book offer - limited time. Some organizations are so interesting that we come back to them more than once. Among US regulatory agencies, the most fascinating may be the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Last July we ran a podcast conversation with the Commission’s Chairman, Christopher Giancarlo, which goes into greater depth about the role of the CFTC and it also contains Chairman Giancarlo’s thought-provoking statement that the top priority facing every regulatory body is to convert the rule book from analog to digital design. The CFTC is at the forefront of regulatory innovation in part because its leader is so passionate about the importance of it. In that spirit, they recruited the perfect person to lead the LabCFTC innovation project -- today’s guest, Daniel Gorfine. Luckily for us, the CFTC was able to attract Dan into government from the fintech sector – I first met him when he was at OnDeck – and he’s been bringing an innovator’s mindset and working models to this venerable government agency. This episode has three very meaty topics, each of which could have been a whole show. First, Dan talks about the vision and work of LabCFTC, sharing insights about how it’s organized that I know other regulators will find helpful. He talks about how they track and facilitate innovation in the financial markets, including a “primer” they issued on rules applying to cryptocurrency. He also explains how they explore new technology for use by the agency, itself -- they call that CFTC 2.0 -- as well as “Digital Reg,” an internal think tank for rapid learning and sharing of tech insight. Second, Dan talks with me about an exciting initiative they’ve just launched, issuing the first-ever CFTC Science Prize Competition Act challenge. They discovered this law empowering agencies to run competitions to solve regulatory problems in science and technology, and they decided to crowdsource ideas on both the problems to tackle and the process to use. Public comments are due July 24. In our conversation, Dan throws out some of the ideas he and his colleagues have thought of -- maybe regulatory data visualization tools, or machine-learning for market surveillance, or machine-readable and machine-executable regulation -- but they want to hear from you. Our listeners are among the most thoughtful people anywhere on regulation innovation, so please comment. You could even become CFTC Innovator of the Year! Our third topic is one that rarely surfaces in the innovation dialogue, and solely needs discussion: the legal and procedural obstacles to government agencies that want to embrace innovation. We could call the topic, government modernization. Think about it. If you were a federal agency wanting to keep up with technology innovation, you would want to be able to do a few things. You would want to be able to try out new technologies, hands-on. If the innovation was something you might adopt for your own agency, you would want to test it before you had to commit to a major procurement budget and procedure. You would also want to be able to brainstorm with a wide range of people, learning from them, thinking through ideas with them. All of this is stunted today by well-intentioned rules that were designed long ago -- for good reason -- to prevent inappropriate influence, backroom deals, and the like. Dan talks in particular about the Anti-Deficiency Act, which restricts procurement activities and prevents the CFTC from being able to try out new kinds of tools. Another issue is the procurement process itself. I met a few months ago with people from a different agency, showing them some innovative technology that could make their regulatory work easier, and one of them said, “If we decided today that we should adopt this, we would have it in seven years.” I’ve talked with other agencies that cite the Federal Advisory Committee Act, with its restrictions on meetings, and the Administrative Procedure Act, which structures the rule-making process and, at some stages, limits interactive dialogue. Agencies have raised concerns about various “government in the sunshine” rules, which again make it difficult to talk informally. Some can’t readily attend a breakfast or lunch event. They have to ask about the value of the meal being served and if it’s more than, I think it’s $15, they can’t eat it, or they have to go through paperwork to pay for it. And of course, there are complex approval processes for participating in various kinds of forums. More than any show we’ve done, this one puts you in the shoes of the regulatory agency and shows how their hands are tied by procedural prohibitions and requirements. I’d love to see someone do a study, maybe a graduate thesis, on how rules that were written in an older, slower era may now undermine the ability of regulators to keep up with exponential change in technology. We could use suggestions on updating them for the digital age. And remember, it’s an issue much broader than finance. I’ve been in and around Washington for decades and can remember the bad old days before some of these rules were created -- indeed, I remember some of the bad old practices that led to them. Still, we don’t need to straightjacket our regulators. Other countries have a much more fluid discussion between agencies and industry, and also have the ability to try things. One model is the Bank of England’s Fintech Accelerator, which explores new technology for the bank itself. And Dan and I both participated in London last month in the amazing AML Tech Sprint run by the UK Financial Conduct Authority -- which is a stunning model of innovative regulatory process. Its leaders were my guests on the last podcast we posted (which my friend Peter Renton of LendAcademy and LendIt called the “most fascinating discussion he’s ever heard on the future of financial regulation” -- if you missed it, check it out). Meanwhile, here’s some great news. Just a few days ago, Congressman Austin Scott (R-GA) introduced the CFTC Research and Development Modernization Act, H.R. 6121. Dan refers to it in our talk – it’s bipartisan legislation to address some of these hurdles at the CFTC. We’ll link to it in the show notes. The bill would permit the Commission to collaborate on projects with fintech developers. It would also allow it to receive “gifts” for R&D purposes, including software to try out, subject to common sense safeguards. The bill echoes work by Congressman Patrick McHenry (R-NC), who has sought to facilitate innovation by all the financial regulatory agencies. And the US agencies, themselves, are all moving ahead, too. The CFPB’s Acting Director, Mick Mulvaney, plans to launch a regulatory sandbox. The FDIC held a tremendously impressive technology forum. Five US agencies attended the UK tech sprint. Regulation innovation is coming, and no one is more thoughtful about it than Dan Gorfine. LabCFTC is dedicated to facilitating market-enhancing financial technology (FinTech) innovation, fair market competition, and proactive regulatory excellence and understanding of emerging technologies. Daniel is also an Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown University Law Center where he teaches a course on ‘FinTech Law & Policy.’ Daniel was most recently Vice President, External Affairs & Associate General Counsel at OnDeck, and previously served as director of financial markets policy and legal counsel at the Milken Institute think tank where he focused on technology-driven financial innovation, capital access, and financial market policy. Earlier in his career, Gorfine worked at the international law firm Covington & Burling LLP and served a clerkship with U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Blake in the District of Maryland. A graduate of Brown University (A.B.), Daniel holds a J.D. from George Washington University Law School and an M.A. from the Paul H. Nitze School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. More for our listeners We have many more great podcasts in the queue. We’ll talk with another community bank CEO, Mike Butler of Radius Bank. We’ll have two more episodes that we recorded this year at LendIt. One is a discussion of new research by LendUp and Experian, on credit reporting, and the other is with Greg Kidd, Founder of Global ID. We also recorded two episodes at last month’s Comply 2018 conference in New York, with two regtech firms -- Compliance.ai, which offers machine-readable regulatory compliance, and Alloy, which has high-tech solutions for meeting the Know-Your-Customer rules in AML. Speaking of LendIt, I was a guest last week on Lend Academy podcast, and Peter Renton will be on our show soon as well, so watch for those. I’m also excited we’ll have several leading members of Congress on the show in the coming weeks. So, stay tuned! The summer conference slowdown is nearly upon us, but I hope to see you at upcoming speeches and events including: American Bankers Association Regulatory Compliance Conference, June 26, Nashville, TN Money 2020, October in Las Vegas. Among other things, I’ll be speaking on the Revolution Stage about the regulation revolution Also, watch for upcoming information on my collaboration with Brett King on his new book on the future of finance -- we’ll have a show and events on that as well. If you listen to Barefoot Innovation on iTunes, please leave a five-star rating on the show to help us build it. Episode 2 of The Mormon Nutritionist goes to understanding how we define and determine what health is. We discuss the medical measures of health and how the media might influence our own beliefs on health. The activity for this episode is: 1.) Take an old magazine (you can usually pick up free copies of old magazines from your local library), 2.) Snap a photo of how many pages are in the magazine when it is set on the table 3.) Cut/rip out all of the pages with with advertisements on them 4.) Take a second photo showing how many pages were ads and how many pages were left in the magazine. 5.) This podcast started as, "The Mormon Nutritionist", hence the references. However, we now have the new name of "The Latter-day Saint Nutritionist"! The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was sometimes known as the "Mormon Church" due to believing God has continued to reveal scripture. We believe the Book of Mormon and the Bible both testify of Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world. We wanted to focus on the actual name of the church, rather than an old nickname, hence the name change. Thanks for your continued support!
